Limpopo Health MEC, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, has urged the youth who are members the ANC not to put politics before their education. The Minister said education is far more important than politics which is determined by the factions that win the conference. She added that in her department there is no space for factions, but rather skills which will help take the province into the future. Ramathuba, who is a member of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) of the South African Communist Party (SACP) was speaking at the Lenyenye community hall last weekend as part of her campaign to garner votes for the position of deputy secretary of the ANC. She is running for the position in the upcoming provincial conference to be held in two weeks’ time at a venue not yet announced. The event was attended by senior GTM officials which included the former municipal manager Mabakane Mangena, who is now the spokesperson for the Department

of Arts and Culture (DAC). Other dignitaries included the CEO`s of hospitals in Mopani, COSAS and SASCO office bearers in Mopani and members of the community from Lenyenye township. “The youth should work hard to fight the social ills in our communities such as inequality, poverty and unemployment through attending school. In places such as Nigeria the rural communities are empowered academically so they could take their country forward. The message I have for the young generation is that they should learn, learn and learn,” she said sternly. “In our department there is no space for political factions but for people with skills.” Ramathuba lashed out at those using money to contest the positions in the organisational structures and went as far as saying they are selling the revolution which was never for sale. “Young leaders should refrain from fighting for the positions of councillors and instead should arm themselves with education so they could be executives in their

chosen professions. That would help bring change in their communities.” -Jan Mafetsa

The Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) through the Mopani District Municipality (MDM) has allocated the sum of R90 million to solve the water crisis in Lenyenye. The taps in this township ran dry almost a decade ago. The announcement was made during the recent State of the Municipality Address (SOMA) at the showgrounds last month. Municipal mayor, Maripe Mangena, said the municipality had heard the complaints of the community about roads and water reticulation in the area. He said everything is in place for the implementation of the project, and that they are just waiting for a response from the community. “The community of Lenyenye were supposed to have received this information earlier, but they disrupted the IDP/ Budget meeting where the plans of the municipality

for this year were to be detailed,” Mangena said. He further asked the business community from the area to take a leaf from the book of the Jewish community who donated a borehole to the community of Bokgaga. Mangena further added that the problem with sewerage at the Lenyenye entrance would be a thing of the past. “Through the Mopani District Municipality we are going to make sure that the Lenyenye sewerage problem turns into a thing of the past. We are going to fence off the yard and thereafter continue with the construction of the plant which has already commenced.”

When the Bulletin visited the area on Monday afternoon, the place was found deserted except for two herdsmen who cautioned this reporter to beware of crocodiles which bask in the sun on hot days. They said that presence of the crocodiles at the open dams is a danger to the immediate residents as they crawl their way into the nearby houses at night, seeking chickens. The site is manned by three men who said they were representing the MDM. There was a huge structure to be used as the sewerage plant, nearby there are two more dams which are empty. Further east of the plant which has a dilapidated mashed wire fence, there are more than five dams which are filled with sewerage from the township of more 2 000 homes. -Jan Mafetsa Foto deur: Willie & Mariette Source: www.dwa.gov.za Information updated: 4/6/2018

The culture must change Thapelo Matlala, the newly appointed Municipal Manager at the White House has this week proven the difference a good leader can make to an ailing situation. On Monday morning the news broke of a strike action at the GTM’s Electrical Engineering Department. According to information at the time, the technicians and control room operators had downed tools. Matlala met with the disgruntled employees at 07:00 that following morning after having met with his legal team. They handed him a list of grievances to which he responded by assuring them that some of the issues could be sorted out immediately, whilst other would take some time. He then issued them with the ultimatum – work or be evicted off the GTM premises. The employees agreed and within the hour resumed their duties. They also opted to speak directly with Matlala in future rather than through their union representatives. “I am dealing here with a culture that needs to change. There are certain practices that have been allowed to continue in the workplace for far too long

and the people have become accustomed to that way of doing things. To change this culture will take some time, but they have to understand that the only way to operate effectively is to operate according to the law.” Similarly over the weekend, Matlala was personally at the site of a burst water main in Aqua park which caused the entire area to be without water for an entire day. From the site he contacted Bulletin regularly, as late as 22:00 on Saturday evening, to keep the residents informed on the progress of the situation. “I must agree that we have failed in adequately communicating with our people regarding the reparations on these aged water pipes. We will definitely focus on improving our communications to help our consumers plan ahead for these types of service disruptions.” By all accounts it would appear that as he enters his third month in the hot seat, Thapelo Matlala, has stuck by his word of driving that will transform Tzaneen into one of the most functional and beautiful municipalities in the country.

— Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

NEWS FLASH Tuesday evening saw the fourth cash in transit heist hit the Tzaneen area in little over a month. In this latest incident which occurred around 19:00 on the R71 between Tarentaalrand and Letsistele, a group of armed suspects forced a G4S vehicle off the road after shooting out the vehicle’s tyres. It is alleged they then bombed the vehicle and fled after a brief fire fight. During the exchange of gunfire between the suspects and security officers, three bystanders’ vehicles were hit by stray bullets.

Fourth heist rocks Tzaneen The suspects fled in the direction of Hoedspruit in two separate vehicles. Quick response by various security groups in the area resulted in the suspects being stopped near Swadini in the vicinity of Hoedspruit. There were five suspects in the vehicle and a shootout occurred during which one suspect was killed, one suspect fled and three were wounded. The deceased and three arrested suspects were all between the ages of 25 and 43 from Burgersfort, Burgersdorp, Hazyview and

Bushbuckridge areas respectively. At the same time, the second suspect vehicle was cornered near the Strijdom tunnel on the Abel Erasmus pass which leads from Hoedspruit towards Orighstad. Following a brief altercation between the suspects and the authorities, they fled on foot, leaving the vehicle behind. One suspect was arrested. The three who escaped were not yet arrested at the time of going to print. The police recovered a black Audi A4, a white Mercedes ML, two AK47 rifles, one

R4 assault rifle, one Baretta 9mm pistol, two SAPS standard issue bulletproof vests, two standard issue SANDF bulletproof vests, blue lights, a two-way radio and two bags of money. At the time of going to print no new information regarding the incident had been released to the media. We do not know if all of the money was retrieved, nor whether the remaining suspects were apprehended. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Sekuriteitsman ontslaan Babies still nameless James Reed (43) is verlede week uit Mediclinic Tzaneen ontslaan. Reed is drie keer raak geskiet.

There has still been no breakthrough in either of the cases involving the death of two infant boys in the Phalaborwa area. During the last two weeks of April, in two separate instances, the bodies of two new-born baby boys were discovered among the household rubbish at the Phalaborwa dumpsite. Both of the children were of African descent and were discovered by garbage collectors working at the Phalaborwa site. The bodies were allegedly transported to the site in plastic bags by a garbage collection truck originating from the Namakgale Township, 10 kilometres outside of Phalaborwa. The mothers of these babies have also not yet been traced and calls to the Maphuta Malatjie hospital where the autop-

sies were carried out, have been futile. Police have said that they are still investigating. Provincial police spokesperson Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe alluded to the fact that the police might be looking into the possibility of an illegal abortion clinic operating in the Namakgale area.

Letaba FPA welcomes fire eater to its stable The start of the winter fire season was announced in style last week with an open day hosted by the Letaba Fire Protection Association (LFPA) at the ZZ2 airfield in Mooketsi. The day was attended by a role players within the firefighting community and featured special guest speakers including Mike Moja from the Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, and the acting mayor of the Mopani District Municipality, Anna Sono. The open day was not only used as a means to communicate the importance of preventative measures in the fight against wildfires, or the advantages of having a proper working relationship amongst the members of the Association and their partners, but also to welcome a very special guest and new member to the firefighting family. The Air Tractor, a powerful fixed wing aircraft has joined the team in Tzaneen and will offer efficient air support in the event of runaway field fires. The Air Tractor is considered to be the top of its class with an 18m wingspan, a power to weight ratio of 800 pounds to 1400 horsepower and the capability to reach speeds in excess of 220 knots. The AT-802A is the world’s largest ag aircraft and its presence here will prove invaluable to the high production agricultural industry. For a more detailed report on the Air Tractor, its uses and who will pilot it, read this month’s AgriBulletin. In that feature we will also be speaking to the LFPA regarding their preparations for the coming fire season. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Granny’s Grumbles - Remittance Men

I only discovered what a “remittance man” was at the age of twenty-two when I moved to a small farming area in a rather remote area of Rhodesia. For anybody not sure of the meaning – in a nutshell he is normally the son of an aristocratic or rich British family who has caused embarrassment to the family due to unruly, eccentric or just downright criminal behaviour. He is given a ticket to one of the colonies with a promise of a monthly sum for as long as he never returns home. It appeared that most of these men – either by choice or a promise to their parents -always disappeared into relatively remote

areas. The area in which I lived had a tiny village comprising 200 inhabitants and many farmers and miners in the outlying areas. There were many of these displaced sons in this area and they all had one thing in common. They all wore khaki safari suits and the majority of them had double-barrelled names. The first one I met farmed just a few miles from the village and I was taken to his farm to see if he had a couple of pigs for sale. I had heard a lot about Jock from the lady who owned the local trading store. Evidently it was assumed that he came from an aristocratic Scottish family – he himself had never mentioned his family but it was obvious that he was Scottish and he had suddenly arrived, bought a small farm and the locals were a bit stunned on account of Jock deciding to do his farming with an old style plough with six oxen. A neighbour dropped into his place weekly to find out if there was anything he needed picked up from the shops since he did not have a car. Jock owned a horse and would ride to the local hotel every Friday night where he would indulge himself by drinking as much whisky as he could until the pub closed. The hotel had actually erected a couple of gum poles outside the entrance especially for the horse to be tethered and at the end of a drunken Friday night some of the regulars would assist Jock onto the animal which would then plod home. There was a lot of conjecture between the locals on how Jock actually got to bed

when he arrived home or did he just sleep on its back. The lady at the local trading store (which was also the post office) and who knew absolutely everything that happened in the village let us into the fact that Jock’s parents had recently died leaving everything to his sister. He and his sister had evidently always been close so she had decided to visit. The entire area was wondering how Jock was going to handle the situation. He lived in a pole and dagga hut, slept on an old camp bed and didn’t own a car. His sister was flying to Salisbury which was 150 kms from our area so he obviously had to find a way of getting there and bringing her back. He managed to get a lift to Salisbury with one of the local famers and made his way to the airport. From all accounts his sister was somewhat shattered to discover that her brother didn’t have any form of transport so she booked the two of them into a hotel for a couple of days while she looked for a car to buy for him. Four days after he left, Jock and his sister arrived at the local trading store to buy provisions – they had just arrived from Salisbury and were on their way to the farm in a bright yellow Anglia. We all knew about the arrival via the local telephone party line and everybody was wondering how the sister would handle the situation. We didn’t have to wait long – the next day Jock’s sister booked herself into the local hotel and a week later she returned to Scotland. Presumably his monthly allowance was not affected and he now had a car, so all was well.

Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church Wees gegroet in die naam van God. “ ‘n Mens is ‘n mens” of so lui die gesegde.

Unicorn hosted by Uplands Ulrich Faber: 3de span

Larries gee Suidskool opdraande

During the weekend of the 19th and 20th of May, Unicorn was invited to the annual netball tournament held at Uplands Preparatory in White River. This year, 50 teams played in the tournament from ages U/11 to U/13. The courts had to be swept clean from much welcome rain before the games could begin, but this certainly did not dampen the girls’ spirits. It has become an annual event and Up-

lands has again hosted all the Unicorn netball players with grace. This is a tradition that both schools hope to carry into the future for many years to come. Schools from the surrounding areas in Mpumalanga were invited as well and even further afield as Johannesburg. Exposure to other netball teams and their coaches all make for further improvement in all players.

Xander Perry: 3de span

Last supper in the Lane On Friday evening, the 1st of June, the historical Pine Tree Lane at Merensky High School was the guest of honour during an exquisite dinner party. It would be the last supper beneath the trees which have stood watch over the grounds of this high school over time immemorial. It was an air of melancholy that surrounded the evening as the many former Plasies reminisced about countless hours spent amid the shelter of these giants who guarded their childhood. The decision to fell the trees did not come easily to the members of the school governing body, but was a necessary evil as dictated by the three years of negotiations between the school and their insurance company. The trees had grown old and their

branches brittle. This caused a major hazard to not only the surrounding structures, but vehicles and people who passed through the lane. Gratifying news, though, is that new indigenous trees will be planted to form a brand new lane where memories, moments and magic will once again await future Plasies. The last dinner in the Lane initiative by the governing body served a duel purpose; to raise funds for the new gymnasium as well as providing a fitting farewell salute to these giants, who for many years have provided shelter and shade for generations of Plasies and visitors. For a more detailed look at the history of the Lane, be sure to read your June edition of the AgriBulletin at the end of the month.

— Joe Dreyer
