In order to eradicate the problem of homelessness in the Tzaneen town, the municipality has resolved to utilize a farm on the southern side of town and convert it into a new township. The move which is a decade overdue, will see houses being constructed alongside Agatha Road from Tzaneen up to Agatha. The farm Lt 555 is also called ga Mmachidi and is situated behind High Grove Restaurant towards the SPCA and GTM Landfill Site. The houses are going to be built for the low income earners and the poor which will be given free. The move is seen as an attempt to provide houses for people who sleep on the streets and those who had erected informal houses along the banks of the Letaba River. But not everybody is happy with the developments. While some think the move will turn Tzaneen even more on its side, others feel it is good news. A resident who requested an-

onymity, said the developments will not help with the eradication of the mess experienced within the CBD. According to him, the hawkers will now multiply and spread into other areas of town as they will now be living right in town. There are those who feel the move is nothing but a move by the ANC to regain traction among their voters in Ward 15 which is controlled by the DA. In a notice to the public the municipality said “The GTM gives notice in terms of section 51 of the Greater Tzaneen Spuma Bylaws 2016, that an application to establish a township referred to in the annexure had been received. Particulars of the application will lie for inspection during normal office hours in the offices of the municipal manager for a period of 30 days as from the 27th of July 2018. Objections or representations should be made within 30 days.” GTM spokesperson, Neville Ndlala, when

contacted said he would come back to us. He was then attending to the media after his colleagues brought service delivery in town to a halt. It is not the first time that the municipality built houses to accommodate people who resided in rivers. The houses built at Mokgolobotoo were given to people who were from Nkowankowa. No information has been made available as to which contractor(s) would be receiving the tender to construct the houses or at what price to the rate payers. It is also not clear at this stage whether the current rates for water and electricity would be increased in order to accommodate the (presumably free) electricity and water supply to these low-income homes nor has any mention been made of plans to increase the capacity of the waste treatment plant to accommodate the increase in residents. — Jan Mafetsa

They are sponsored with cigarettes and bread from the local shops as they even guard shops belonging to Somalians in the village. Their presence has been a major deterrent to night crawling thugs, who have now seemingly disappeared from the streets. A member of the Makhongoloso said that the community is tired of reporting criminals to the police and nothing being done afterwards. “All was right up until it was reported that there is a vehicle and taxis from other villages which transport criminals with weapons to rob people randomly here in our village.” One of the ring leaders of the group told

Hot beans finally went nowhere

Residents of Segabeng village in Thabine area are happy after attempts to sell their only soccer sports ground failed. This after the traditional authority gave an order that the grounds not be sold to anyone .The sports grounds, which are used by the community for mass gatherings such as the reception of initiates from the mountain schools, and also serve as the playground for the local high school children, was to be sold to a church pastor from Lenyenye. The matter raised protests from soccer-lovers and the general community three

months ago after a big marquee tent was pinned in the centre of the grounds. The community was told that the sports facility would be moved to the government farm nearby. Soccer promoter in the village and former player in the village Patrick Pilusa, told Bulletin that the community is now happy now that finally the local traditional committee came to their senses and abandoned their decision to sell the facility. “Truth be told, we feel relieved that at last the sports facility would go nowhere. According to the spokesperson of the GTM, Neville Ndlala, the concerns of the residents and Tzaneen motorists have finally been heard by the newly appointed municipal manager, Thapelo Matlala. In a statement to Bulletin, Ndlala said that a new parking area has been identified as suitable for the operation of the taxi rank which has been a very serious problem for some time now. “The portfolio committee on public transport has met and discussed this critical issue and an alternative parking has been identified. On 10 August 2018 there will be a transport forum

meeting where this development will be communicated to the taxi association,” he explained. “There will be a physical inspection conducted on the day (tomorrow) and afterwards an agreement between GTM and the taxi association will in all likelihood be reached in terms of timeframes of the relocation of the waiting taxis. After the relocation, our law enforcement officers will employ zero tolerance on any unlawful parking of vehicles is the Claude Wheatley street.” It would appear as though the municipal manager who has come under fire by the

The relentless spate of criminal activities in the Khujwana settlements have forced the community to take matters into their own hands. The residents have formed street committees to guard their homes and patrol the streets. In a meeting held at Mateu precinct it was resolved that each house should have a whistle with which to call for help when they are under attack. This follows the attack on a man at Khujwana North when he was returning home from the initiation school’s welcoming ceremony. In another incident shortly thereafter, a man was attacked in his sleep after criminals gained access to his home using a firearm to break through the security gate at his front door. Since a fortnight ago, a group of young

workers for his heavy handed approach to uprooting the rot he has inherited, has managed to bring about positive change to many serious matters within his municipality. Whether the talks will actually happen as promised, or whether this is another attempt at pacification, remains to be seen. Judging by the impact Matlala has had in just four months, the odds point in favour of the former. If SAMWU fail in their efforts to remove him from office, and rather adopt the new culture he drives, Tzaneen should be transformed into the Utopia he promised to work towards Foto deur: Willie & Mariette Source: www.dwa.gov.za Information updated: 06/08/2018

SAMWU wants “bossy” Matlala gone Service delivery in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) came to a halt on Monday and Tuesday after employees affiliated to the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) demonstrated in front of the civic centre. They demanded that the municipality rescind the employment contract of the recently appointed accounting officer, Thapelo Matlala, and be replaced with a new manager. An employee who could not be mentioned as he was not authorised to address the media, said when they arrived at work on Monday they received an e-mail calling for a meeting of all the unions just after 10:00 a.m. Work took a back seat and was replaced with preparations for the meeting which was set for the lunch hour but continued until it was knock off time. Contacted for comment, Tzaneen SAMWU secretary, Patrick Maake told Bulletin that workers want the municipal manager, Thapelo Matlala, to vacate the offices of the GTM with immediate effect. “His behaviour is unbearable to the workers. He is bossy, arrogant and he unilaterally go against the decision of the collective agreement taken at the Local Labour Forum (LLF). For example it was agreed that in Limpopo workers should once a year be allowed to encash eight of their leave days, but he wrote a circular instructing that the encashment of leave days be scrapped,” Maake alleged. “As per law, he should together with all the directors and at least three councillors attend

the LLF but since he arrived into the institution, that has not happening. He even sent junior employees to the LLF and that is not acceptable as they do not have the powers to take executive decisions. Also, he took the advantage that he was an employee of SALGA to unilaterally decide on his own about workers.” He went on to claim that Matlala first gave himself a car allowance and thereafter said the other junior workers were not entitled to them, thus deviating from the normal policy of the municipality. He also claimed that the response by Neville Ndlala that the workers are fighting for overtime, is malicious and too far from the truth. “It is mostly done by those who are acting and anticipating to be rewarded for siding with the oppressors.” Maake added that overtime payments are just a privilege and workers will not take to

the streets because of it. “Today we want the mayor, Maripe Mangena, to rescind the contract Matlala has signed with the council because the people he would oversee and account for, do not want him. The spin doctor is buying the face of management.” Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the municipality Neville Ndlala said that the municipality is streamlining the services to the community. He said that Matlala has reduced the overtime payments monthly from the sum of R3,2 million to R1,7 million which angers the workers. He said the new measures were explained to the workers during a meeting at the swimming pool recently. That was not accepted by workers as it favoured GTM. There are concerns in Tzaneen that since the appointment of premier Stan Mathabatha, municipal managers are “imported” to the municipalities in Mopani while there are many people in the area fit for the position. They cited the appointment of Republic Monakedi who was moved from Tzaneen to Mopani District Municipality, and the appointment of Matala who was brought in from Polokwane, as examples. — Jan Mafetsa and Joe Dreyer

*Editor’s comments – The appointment of Thapelo Matlala in April this year marked the first time in ten years that Tzaneen municipality had a permanently appointed Municipal manager. It also marked the start of visible changes to the municipality which included the remarking of roads, fixing of potholes and sinkholes along the major routes and a R90 million plan of action implemented to save the sinking electrical ship. Matlala has been hard on the workers, the proof of this can be noticed by the sudden stop in weekend-long power outages which became the norm during the past year, the cutting of grass by the GTM cleaning crews and the marked improvement in roads infrastructure. One SAMWU-member told me during the protest action at the GTM this week, that he and a number of other employees were upset about the cutting of their overtime and the fact that they could no longer work on Sundays. “If we don’t work on Sundays, how will the municipality look?” The issue here seems to be a political struggle for the control of the ANC regional Headquarters in Second Avenue. Matlala is not of the Ramaphosa faction and should SAMWU succeed in removing him, he is likely to be replaced by the former municipal manager of the Maruleng municipality. This could well see Tzaneen’s service delivery return back to what it was – virtually non-existent.

joe@bulletin. us.com

Sello Mononela, Mopani SAMWU regional secretary, addressing the SAMWU members.

Tzaneen ratepayers’ needs held hostage Following the disruptions caused to the service delivery sector by the striking SAMWU members at the GTM on Monday and Tuesday, the mayor, Maripe Mangena addressed the gathering. He was called out of an important SALGA meeting in Thohoyandou to rush back and arbitrate. Mangena told the group of SAMWU affiliates that the municipal manager, Thapelo Matlala, had apologised for the inconvenience the workers “suffered” under his stewardship and that their problems will be attended to. This after he had met with Matlala behind closed doors. “After the deliberations held with your union leaders we found that the main problem was lack of communication between workers and the employer and the matters would only be settled through talks about talks. We had agreed with the union leaders that the

circulars which are the source of problems in the institution be withdrawn until it was deliberated upon. The MM is busy typing the communique in his office.” It was resolved that all the parties will return to the Local Labour Forum (LLF) where all the matters will be addressed. “We cannot promise that it will be a win-win situation as the other parties should not be left out. In politics we say the Aluta continua (struggle goes on) which means some of the problems would be resolved with time as they could not be addressed at once,” Mangena added. Among the circulars to be withdrawn by the municipality include the issuing of car allowances to workers, non-payment of the encashment of leave days (this despite Section 21 of the Employment Act which states that remuneration for leave days can only be exchanged upon termination of contract),

non-allocation of overtime to workers, and the latest - released on Monday and Tuesday - that money be deducted from workers for their time spent in the parking lot instead of at their respective posts. However, Mopani SAMWU regional secretary, Sello Mononela, told the workers that he will be part of the deliberations to bring an end to the problems affecting the municipality. He said they could not at the moment announce the steps to be taken to remove the municipal manager, but that they will engage their lawyers to pilfer the employment contract of the municipality to check for discrepancies. “We will go down to the day the decision to hire the municipal manager was taken, checking if he posesses all the requirements for the position, and whether appropriate procedures were followed when he was

hired. Since not all are on our side, it will be premature to reveal all the details at this stage as some would use the information for their own personal good,” Mononela stated.

“I survived a hammer attack”

Brian Westley (64) says the Lord was standing next to him and that is why he survived a hammer attack. Almost 18 months after the horrific attack which left him in a coma for three days, Brian retold his ordeal and offered a look at life after a farm attack. On the 10th of February 2017 Brian was awoken by a noise on his veranda at Plot 42 California, just outside Letsitele. It was a smidgen before 07:00 that morning. He went to investigate and opened the door. Three days later he found himself in a bed with a drip and a ventilator, dressed in nothing but a hospital gown. A nurse told him to relax as the doctor would come and see him shortly to move him off to the general ward. “I was dumbstruck. What ward? What doctor and what were all these pipes coming out of me for? Was I still asleep and dreaming” Brian had no recollection of where he was or how he had arrived there. What he did know, was that he was in pain and disorientated. The front pages read that week that he had been assaulted and robbed by suspects who had gained access to his home through the front door. They had hit him over the head with a hammer as he opened the door, tied him up with his own clothes which they took from his cupboard, ransacked the property and left him in a pool of his own blood on the floor of his lounge. The suspects took keys to the main house on the property, removed a safe from the house and cracked it open outside in the yard. They fled with its contents which included a shotgun, a .303 hunting rifle, a revolver and jewellery worth an undisclosed value. A worker later found the unconscious Westley and called emergency services. He was rushed to Letaba Hospital where he remained in a coma for three days. After he was stabilized he was moved to the general men’s ward where he remained for five more days before returning home. “I was staying on Giel van der Schyff’s property. He had left for Pretoria on business and entrusted me with the keys to his home and the rest of the property. I was

wall as per legislation at the time of the robbery. Information was made available then, that the safe was removed from the wall during construction on the premises at the time. “I’m not sure of any of that information other than what Giel told me. What I do know is that no police officer has ever contacted me about the incident again,” said Brian. “I would also like to tell people that the stories about me being mistreated in hospital are absolutely not true at all. I was treated with respect by the nurses and the doctors. The food was hardly edible, but the staff were great.” Brian said that he doesn’t suddenly feel any different towards society after the attack either. “It’s not like I’m walking around hating black people now. In fact I don’t hate anybody, we have become so desensitized to crime in our country that we take it as a part of life really. It has nothing to do with a specific race to me. You get your bad bunch in every ethnic group and let me tell you, among my own people I have seen the same, if not worse behaviour.”

looking after the place for him, you know, the general stuff like sorting out the milk containers and just keeping an eye on things until he returned. Only the staff knew that Giel was away and that I had the keys. This does raise some suspicion for me, because my attackers knew exactly where I was and where everything else was.” According to Brian, the police did come and take his statement, but he has since heard nothing from them again. At the time of the incident the police investigative unit fine combed the scene and launched a search for three suspects. The SAPS confirmed the incident and a case of Negligent Handling of Firearm against the owner of the property was being investigated. This was allegedly because the safe containing the firearms was not fixed to the

According to him, the only major change that occurred is that he is now a lot less lax when it comes to security and being aware of his surroundings. For the first three months after the attack he would wake up at the slightest noise outside his window and he admits that he still experiences a little bit of paranoia at times. “But I feel that people should understand that these things can happen to anyone at any time and that when it does, life does not end for you right there. If you are lucky to have survived an attack like mine, you have a lot more to be thankful for than most people. You should embrace that and use it as a motivator to carry on and make the best of the rest of your life. You should know that it was not your time to go, and there has to be a reason for that.” Five months after the attack at California 42, neighbours of Brian’s were also attacked. The Woodleys suffered a similar fate on the 18th of July that year. Mr and Mrs Woodley and their son, Ian, were in the house at the time. All three of them survived. During the attack the suspects stole their cellphones and a shotgun and fled. “I know the Woodley’s personally, they are close friends of mine. I wonder whether these suspects were not the same guys who attacked me. We will probably not find out soon, all I can say is that we are all very grateful to be alive.” Bulletin will endeavour to make contact with the Woodley’s for a follow up on their horrific encounter for a next edition. At the time of going to print we could not reach the police for comment. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Thula Thamela Karin Adèle Phillipa Iuel-Carst born in Johannesburg on 1 May 1932 has died in Tzaneen on the 5th of August 2018. Karin moved to the Haenertsburg area as a young married woman and threw herself into projects that still benefit Haenertsburg today. Known to many, including her family, as Thamela (the one who shouts), she was involved in fundraising

for village projects. She started the village library and a school for 150 children on her farm. She was also heavily involved in raising funds for Thusanang and raised money for the ceiling in the Village Hall as well as its renovation and modernisation. Karin leaves her two children Marietta and Peer and four grandchildren.

Ilne Stander (56,) Magistrate for Lenyenye and Hoedspruit, was found deceased in her Haenertsburg bed on Monday morning. The community is in absolute shock and mourn the loss of such a great legal mind who was also a wonderful and caring human being. She leaves behind her husband, Johan and her two daughters Celeste and Martinette. A memorial service for Ilne will be held on Tuesday, the 14th of August in Haenertsburg at the village church in the main road. Bulletin extends our sincerest condolences to Johan and his girls during this time. You are in our thoughts.

Granny’s Grumbles - THE GOVERNESS

Life was never dull in our small dorp and one could always rely upon either the trading store owner or the switchboard operator to keep you informed of all the latest gossip. Now there were many rich tobacco farmers in our area and one of the richest was Guy Hamilton-Bailey. As the name might suggest he was frightfully British and was never seen without a cravat. Guy was a widower with two small children aged about eight and ten and had evidently decided to hire a governess from Britain to come and “live-in” so that his children could be exposed to the finer aspects of polite society. Everybody knew about the arrival – Guy had evidently gone through to Salisbury to pick up the young lady from the airport and he took her directly to his farm which was miles from anywhere.

Now what exactly happened the first evening at the farm was a matter of conjecture – suffice to say that within 24 hours the young lady had managed to work out the intricacies of the party-line system and had contacted the switchboard operator asking for her help – could she arrange for the police to come to the farm to pick her up as quickly as possible. It appeared that Guy’s motives were not exactly those of a well-bred Englishman and he had omitted mentioning in his advertisement that he was a widower. The police did go to the farm and effected a “rescue” but since Marcy had no money and no relatives the police were actually at a bit of a loss as to what to do with her. Fortunately for all concerned the circuit judge was on his fortnightly visit and he suggested that temporary accommodation be found for her and he would contact the British Embassy. The same judge – who was booked into the local hotel, suggested that the manager put her up as he was sure the British Embassy would reimburse him which did in fact happen. The entire area was agog with what happened and naturally this was the topic of conversation with the regulars at the pub. Nobody had really seen Marcy but according to the cops and the hotel manager she was nice but very shy. “Such a pity that Guy had given her such a bad impression of Rhodesians.” The manager hastened to tell them that it appeared that she thought the people she had met (with the exception of her short-lived employer) were very nice and she LOVED the climate. HE thought somebody should give her a job. The bachelors in the bar all thought it a good idea but nobody knew of any jobs

available. One of the wags suggested that Mario give her a job – Mario was an Italian who had opened a workshop a couple of years previously – he was well-known for two reasons – he could fix almost anything but he either could not, or would not, learn to speak English. Notwithstanding the excellence of his work, his workshop and office were an absolute mess and nobody could read an invoice made out by him. However, by the end of a festive evening Mario had been conned into believing that not only would he be saving a damsel in distress but it would do wonders for his business generally. The evening ended with the hotel manager promising to bring her to Mario’s workshop the next morning for an interview. The interview – according to what the hotel manager told the regulars – was most unlike any other. Mario (in broken English) pointed out the mess and said it needed to be sorted out and he needed help with the invoices. Then he asked her how much she wanted. The poor girl had been in Rhodesia for less than five days – she knew nothing about salaries or working conditions so told the hotel manager that she would accept whatever he offered if he could find her some accommodation. This was all sorted out and within a month Mario’s place was so changed that people were visiting just to listen to his dramatically improved English and the new improved workshop. Four months later Mario and Marcy were married by the circuit judge. Now I know what you are thinking... a marriage of convenience!! Because that is what virtually the entire dorp thought, but ten years and two children later they were still together and appeared very happy. God works in mysterious ways!

The Message Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church Shalom! “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” Genesis 1:1 these are the first words in the Bible, a book that is regarded by non-believers as just another book full of stories, even another history book. For the believer, however, it is a book of wonderful stories, a God inspired way of life. It gives us a manual of how to live. One could say it is a history lesson as well, one can learn where we went wrong, where our ancestors disobeyed and the consequences of this behaviour, it is definitely a learning curve. It gives us an insight to the amazing grace and the love of our Father, who created us, but not only this, He created us in His image. He readily forgave those who went against His wishes. It all started with Adam and Eve who had it all, a perfect life, but due to temptation disobeyed God. One can argue that God got mad, but I think it was rather that He was disappointed in them. Yes, He banished them from the garden and they were sent into a world that was far from perfect, a world full of temptation and sin. He did not abandon them however and still loved them completely. He is the same God that we as believers should know, sinners though we all are. We too disobey His wishes, His perfect plan for us, yet He does not abandon us. When Jeremiah felt that God had seemed to have abandoned him, he pleads with God and God replies to him, verse 19 of chapter 15 “Therefore this is what the Lord says: If you REPENT, I will restore you that you may serve Me…..” Here the crux of the matter is two-fold, one repentance and the ability to serve God. God was compassionate towards Jeremiah. In the New Testament we learn of Jesus’ compassion, it is mentioned 21 times. So how can we have any doubt that this same, unchangeable God will not have compassion on us. Do we have compassion for others? What is compassion, but love in action? Are you being Christ-like in your compassion, or are you just paying lip-service to this? May all God’s grace fall upon you and guided by the Holy Spirit may you do God’s will. Blessings

The Numbers 100 000

After an Islamic cleric blamed women who dress provocatively for earthquakes in 2010, 100 000 women joined for a “Boobquake” to test the theory. Nothing happened.

Mind-blowing Fact #84 Mary Anderson invented the windshield wiper in 1903. In addition, women over the years have patented: disposable diapers, paper bags, nonreflective glass, the foot-pedal trash can, the dishwasher, and many other innovations.

The mystery of the Agatha Road bags A shroud of secrecy hangs over the mysterious discovery of three large plastic bags along Agatha Road near AB5. The bags were see-through plastic bags, not unlike those used in hunting excursions to transport meat, and contained large quantities of blood. The gruesome discovery was made by members of the public who were travelling home on Sunday evening from Tzaneen up the Agatha Road. They noticed a very suspicious vehicle in the road and decided to stop and observe its movements. The concerned

citizens took photos of the vehicle and sent the information to the Agatha SAS members who mobilized to the scene. Noticing that they were being watched, the occupants of the suspicious vehicle made their getaway before the SAS units could arrive on the scene. In their wake they left behind the three plastic bags. Two jackets and a pair of shoes were also reportedly found at the scene but it is not certain whether these items are linked to the bags. “When we arrived on the scene we reported our findings to the Tzaneen SAPS who

ordered us to leave the crime scene untouched, which we understandably did. A short while later a large number of police vehicles showed including the forensic unit who bagged and tagged everything they considered to be evidence and left the scene. We were told that forensics will have to determine whether the blood in the bags were human or animal and that could take four days, explained one of the Agatha SAS members. “We have not yet heard any word from them.” Around two months prior to Sunday

evening’s findings, the Agatha SAS in cooperation with the SAPS responded to an attempted farm attack along the AB5 road. This has led to the community in that area speculating as to whether the bags were left by would be attackers, or whether they were meant as intimidation. Currently however, the dominant theory suggests that it could have been bags that were dumped by lazy hunters on their way home from an excursion. What do you think of the matter? Let us know. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

“Don’t you dare change names” Tzaneen residents have shot down attempts by the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM), Mayor Maripe Mangena, to rename some of the community assets such as rivers, dams, main streets, tar roads and the community halls after the dead heroes of the ruling party. The move was announced at the ‘White House’ during the State of the Municipality (SOMA) recently. Among the projects to be named are the Lenyenye community hall, the Nkowankowa community hall, Lephepane- Khujwana access road, the Marumofase-Nabane access road and the two roads to be constructed between Khujwana and Moime villages and the Leseka -Mathlogwe access roads. The move according to authorities is aimed to rewrite the history of the African people by

themselves. Mangena, who had recently been re-elected the chairperson of the Mark Shoppe region of the ANC, said in future the projects which would be implemented will be named after the struggle heroes of the communities they hail from. Residents expressed concern that not enough was done to consult the affected communities through meetings. Mothlatlego Mashaba from Khujwana, told Far North Bulletin that the authorities had not yet raised the matter with the affected communities to get their input on the subject. He said the feeling in the community is that people be provided with water rather than money spent on the renaming of places which the people had already named them themselves. He said communities in the area

were experiencing the worst water shortage in living memory. The EFF leader in the area, and also a resident from the Khopo settlement, Fannie Malatji, said that though he attended the event in which the renaming was announced, he does not support the move as the community were left out of the picture. His submission is that there is nothing in the area that will be given a name without the community being consulted first. Lisborn Ramoshaba, from Khujwana village said the leaders should be told that they had now pressed the wrong buttons, in case they forgot what happened when they wanted to rename the town of Tzaneen after Mark Shoppe. “They should fix the potholes in the roads as the renaming will not in any way

benefit the community,” Ramoshaba added. Another resident from Segabeng still in the area, Mogale Mojela, said though he is not against the renaming of the road, he is concerned that there is still more to be done on the road such as the construction of extended streets to Khujwana, Shikhati, Serurubele and the roads leading to the cemeteries. Further investigation by this reporter revealed the name of the leader of the ANC which the road will be renamed after is none other than Joseph Makolobe Nkgapele, who was residing at Khopo village. The comrade who died last year, was buried on the same day that the results of the August 2017 local government elections were announced signalling the loss of metros by the ANC to the Democratic Alliance.

Cyclists were up for a challenge

Pelo Makoti

The 7th annual Miami Magoebaskloof MTB Challenge took place on Saturday, the 4th of August at Merensky High School. Laerskool Tzaneen Primary’s star cyclist, Pelo Makoti took first place in the Sub-Nipper Boys 15km event. The Miami Magoebaskloof MTB race is hosted by Tzaneen Cycling Club and started and finished on the Merensky High School grounds. Nine of their cyclists also participated in the race which offered spectacular scenery and a glimpse of the u/14 quarter final rugby match played on the grounds near the finish line. Over a distance of 15km, the sub-junior boys were led by Merensky’s Hennie de Wet (1st) and Matthew van der Merwe (2nd). The more challenging 35km track was attacked by the Sub Junior, Youth and Junior Boys, as well as the Sub Junior and Youth Girls.

Armand Cronjé had an excellent race. Not only was he crowned the “King of the Mountain”, but he was the 1st Junior boy and overall winner out of a pool of 140 cyclists. Sheldon Muller was the 5th Junior boy to finish. The 1st Sub Junior girl to cross the finish line was Janke Joubert, while Jodi Spaumer took 3rd place in the Youth Girls category. Youth boys, Gunter Katzke (3rd) and John-Robert Honiball (5th), also held the cycling club’s name high. Jurgens Spaumer (Sub Junior Boys) took a 7th place.

Big Match Decisions cost game On Saturday, the junior Merensky rugby boys faced the toughest match of their season as they clashed with the Piet Retief u/14’s at Plasiepark for a place in the Virseker Beker semi-finals. They could not have anticipated that it would be their final game for the season when they stepped onto the damp pitch that morning. From the start, it was clear that the visiting Piet Retief did not make the long trip up North to lose, and they quickly opened their account with three beautifully converted tries in the opening stages of the first half. The Plasies seemed flustered at the sheer pace of the Retief backline, but soon gathered themselves and started clawing back into the game. At halftime it was feared that the hosts may be dishing up a little too late when they entered the locker rooms 5-17 down. The performance of the Merensky Blues as they entered the second half was testament to the impact of a coach talk at the break. The team that took to the field were almost unrecognizable as they launched one counter attack after the other. Being witness to such a high level of decent running rugby was an honour for this journalist who at times found it hard to contain his joy as try after try sent the Plasies into the eventual lead. One of the fastest, Tony Watson inspired, runs down the side line seen in a recent local matches resulted in two beautiful tries by the former Laerskool Tzaneen conscript, Janco Grobler. It was art, and the spectators lapped up every moment of it. With 15 minutes on the clock the Plasies were leading by 24-17 and Piet Retief were rattled. Their backline seemed fatigued from the relentless defending it had to endure. But it appeared to be a ruse as soon they managed to send a converted try to the scoreboard leaving both teams tied on 24 points as the game headed into its final minute.

The Piet Retief fly half missed an insanely straight forward attempt at goal just metres from the goal posts and the game seemed lost for them. But fate had another agenda. With literally seconds on the clock, the Piet Retief fullback sent a wayward kick into the Plasie backline. It was returned with an up-and-under which was meant to reach the grass on the outside of the farthest boundary line but instead found the hands of a visiting wing who eagerly crashed over the try line to clinch a 2429 victory for Piet Retief in the dying seconds. Though dismayed at their narrow defeat, this reporter feels that it should be remembered that the boys who faced off on that pitch that morning, were still very young and inexperienced. The pressures of big games and the euphoria of the moment are both known nerve slayers. The merciless duo will eventually be conquered by the player’s experience as the mature into their positions and their careers. Be that as it may, the Merensky boys had a cracker of a season and one that acts as the harbinger to a very promising u/15 team when they next take to the pitch in 2019. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Cream of hockey crop The weekend of the 1st to the 4th of August was one for the history books, as no less than four teams qualified for the Noordvaal tournament for medium schools, hosted by schools all over the old Transvaal. This proved that Plasie hockey is on a roll, as only the U/14 team qualified for this prestigious tournament in 2017. The Plasie 1st team played their matches at Hoërskool Noordheuwel in Krugersdorp. They kicked off with a tremendous 6-3 win against Hoërskool Erasmus, just to be reigned in by Hoërskool Dr Malan with 5 goals against our 2. The see-saw continued with a 3-0 victory over Curro Castle Klerksdorp. Unfortunately, after a tough quarter final, the Plasie girls met their match against Frikkie Meyer High School, with a score of 0-1.

The U/16 team played at Penryn College in Nelspruit. These determined girls were on a winning streak and won their first game against Hoërskool Hoogenhout with a super score of 6-1. The next two games also had the hockey sticks flicking with a 3-0 win against Hoërskool Overkruin, and 3-2 against Delmas High School. In the quarter final game, the team from Hoërskool Ben Viljoen proved too strong and the Plasie girls bowed out with a 0-1 score. The U/15’s copied the one up, one down set by the 1st team. They laughed, and cried, on the fields of Hatfield Christian Academy in Pretoria. The first game against Hoërskool Overkruin left the Plasies smiling with a 2-1 victory. Hoërskool Driehoek set a challenge in the second game, which the Plasie girls lost 1-3. Things were looking up when they managed to defeat Hoërskool Klerksdorp 1-0. This team also

bowed the knee to Hoërskool Delmas in the quarter final with a score of 2-4. The excellent U/14-team however, deserved the lion share of the praise they received. They showed true determination and sportsmanship during their six games at Cornwall Hill College in Pretoria. This team ruled the field by beating their first five opposing schools: Volksrust (2-0), Dr Malan (3-0), Randburg (4-2), Dinamika (4-3 in the quarter final) and Ben Vorster (3-2 in the semi’s). The final game against Randburg High School was nerve-racking. After a 0-1 halftime score, the Plasies gave their all with goals scored by Nikita Fouché (2) and Chantell Meyer (2), setting the score at a 4-4 draw at the end of play. In the following 8-seconds shootout, Desi de Jager managed to score a goal, but the opponents wrapped up the game with three thunderous goals in reply. Merensky occupied second place, returning home with silver medals. This brings the Plasie hockey season to an end. One can only anticipate an even better 2019.

Nkowa bow to mighty Blues

Gerhardus Fourie

In the third Limpopo league cricket game of the season, the Plasie 1st eleven met a team from Nkowankowa on Saturday, 4 August. The Merensky boys decided to bat first, and were all out for 81 runs. Louis Botha and Ruan van der Schyff each contributed 16 runs.

The team from Nkowankowa did not fare much better, as they were all out for 63 runs. Gerhardus Fourie took 4 wickets for only 22 runs. Kieran Albertus also did well, taking 3 wickets for only 15 runs. The Plasie team won the game with 18 runs.

Halfeindstryd Saterdag vir Vossies

Ben Vorster Eerstes

So dit lyk goed vir Tzaneen.

— Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
