Danie Joubert May 2017 This article marks the 18th piece published by this newspaper, in as many months, on the illegal informal traders occupying every street corner and highway-shoulder of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s area of jurisdiction. Although the most contentious portion of the debate centres on the one kilometre stretch next to the R71 highway which is very blatantly misused in direct contravention of the national roads legislation, the GTM has on numerous occasions denied that this is in fact their responsibility. According to their spokesperson, Neville Ndlala, those traders need to be dealt with by SANRAL as the R71 falls under their jurisdiction and not the municipality’s. Every attempt to have the GTM remove these hawkers has failed in the past. Excuses were offered which ranged from the usual blame shifting to the equally clichéd argument that these people are trying to make an honest living - to accusations of racism. Eventually it took the voice of Nathi Sedibe, Ward 15 Local Economic Development (LED) chairperson, before action was taken. This past week, the illegal traders were dealt a soft(ish) blow to the coeliac plexus when their stalls were dismantled and removed by the municipality under the watchful eye of local law enforcement. On the 23rd of August at around 20:00 the evening, a group of municipal workers and members of the traffic department descended on the area of the CBD opposite the police station and proceeded to dismantle every last wooden makeshift stall and table erected illegally by the hawkers. A GTM electrical team seized the opportunity to conduct repairs on the traffic lights at this intersection during the operation. The clean-up crew also paid a visit to the sites along the R71 and removed all the stalls and tables along that stretch as well. The traders were all given notice to remove their goods before the clean-up took place. Tzaneen looked pristine an hour or two later. Sedibe himself was seen wielding a hammer and dismantling stalls
Danie Joubert Aug 2018 as the crew moved through the CBD. Sadly, the excitement was short-lived as the hawkers returned early the following morning and proceeded to re-erect their stalls. By 07:30 on Friday morning, a visitor to the area would not have noticed any change instituted the night before. Pavements were again crowded, traffic lights were obscured by sun-bleached umbrellas and the highway was again littered with illegal fruit sellers. “We conducted what we call a “chicken parade” which was supposed to be followed by a campaign the following day which was postponed due to some new developments,” explained Neville Ndlala, spokesperson for the GTM. “We only targeted illegal hawkers so anyone who is legal must produce a permit that must match with our list.” By this very statement, is the GTM admitting that all the hawkers lining the pavements in front of Super Spar opposite the Tzaneen police station are occupying the area illegally? Because every last one of the stands in this section was dismantled and removed. Ndlala also mentions a list with registered permit holders – when we asked him about registration and hawker permits in the past, we received no response. “We have 42 hawkers with legal permits to trade and it’s valid for a period of two years,” Ndlala said. He failed to answer us on the monetary value of each permit. So what happens now considering that the illegal traders have completely ignored the mass cleanup as if it never happened? “We are going to intensify the campaign until we get everything in order. The plan is to ensure that no illegal hawking continues and even though at the moment we have not yet identified a suitable safe place for the traders to conduct their business, we do not have any free trade zones where people can simply conduct their business for free. We have only 40 designated zones which are demarcated for rental.”
What about that time in 2012?
The last time a “chicken run” was conducted, was in 2012. That time, the clean-up had exactly the same outcome. In actual fact, this attempt seemed to have had the opposite effect as the hawkers rapidly grew in number up to present day where it is estimated that in the region 280 traders currently do business in the CBD. Then there is also the issue of the illegal permits sold by an unknown individual complete with an official municipal stamp – a fact which was exposed in August 2013 by the DA councillor René Pohl. Her findings were widely published that same year. In that article Ndlala told Louis Roux that they are not aware of any illegal hawkers. “Frequent visits are done to the allocated trading spots and hawkers without licences are fined. Goods are confiscated in the case of illegal hawkers occupying sections not allocated for street vending. All legal hawkers have municipal accounts for the payment of licence fees. Several hawkers operate on private premises such as taxi ranks and are not complicit to municipal trade licences,” he said.

**Editor’s note: The attempt to clean up the streets of the illegal informal traders which is suffocating the formal business sector in Tzaneen’s CBD specifically, is laudable. But it does leave me wondering why we have had to struggle, nay, beg the municipality for answers on the hawker crisis only to be either ignored, or simply brushed off with some open-ended response from their spokesperson? Why is it that suddenly, after 24 months, a register exists with traceable names and clearly demarcated areas for the traders – albeit we have not seen this list? Why could all of this not have been upheld and enforced throughout the last six years to prevent this anthill from becoming the mountain we now face? Will a workable solution now be implemented to answer the calls of the ratepayers in this municipality with as much vigour as they answered the call of the workers’ unions? Delegatus non potest delegare.

Farmer robbed five times in 45 days
His study was ransacked and his laptop stolen. Nothing else was taken here.
To say Ben Pretorius (58) is fed up, is to grossly understate the seriousness of the situation. The property upon which he has been living for 18 years, was burgled five times over the last 45 days. It would appear that his farm situated in the Deerpark area near the famous “cross on the hill” beacon, has become the focus of a housebreak-in syndicate in the area. “I believe that this is more than just a clean cut case of burglary,” said Pretorius. “There is something else going on here – it feels a little too personal.” The spate of burglaries have cost him a rental income recently, as one of his lessees vacated the home he rented from the Pretorius’ on the same property, at the start of August after suffering two burglaries in the space of ten days. The first burglary was on the 14th of July, a Saturday afternoon, while the tenants were in town running errands. When they returned home they found the door to their home asun-

der. It would appear as though it had been broken through with tremendous force. The robbers cleaned out the family of everything that they owned. Every piece of electronic equipment, clothing, and bedding and even down to their toothbrushes, had been stolen. They were absolutely shattered. “You feel violated, angry and helpless all in one mutated emotion,” the father of the burgled family said. “At that moment, when you have literally lost everything you own to the intentions of another, your first instinct is for the safety of your family. It is a terrible feeling knowing that you could not stop an intruder from violating your home. I am just so very thankful that we were not home when they came. We could have been a tragic statistic.” Barely had they recovered from the shock of the ordeal when the robbers struck again – just ten days later. Again, the family had been out at a school function and returned just after 20:00

the evening. What was left in the house, along with a few newly purchased replacement items, was gone. There was nothing left except the furniture. The following day the family relocated. A week after the last incident the group of suspects returned to the property. They cut the fence and attempted to enter the home of the elderly Pretorius couple. “I think I may have frightened them away when I returned home from town, because they never made it into the house.” That did not stop them as they returned a week later and tried again, but this time Pretorius was at home and so they were interrupted and fled the property. This past Monday however, they seem to have struck the jackpot. Pretorius was running errands in town and there was nobody else on the property at the time. “They took everything. My DSTV decoder, laptop, flat screen television, clothing from our cupboards, jerseys, linen and some of my power tools.”
According to him, the burglars attempted to grind their way into his safe using his own grinder which they found in the house. They failed and only managed to scratch the safe’s door. The suspects fled the scene with all they keys they could find in the house, and have not been seen or heard from since. “The police were here again to take my statements and conduct a bit of search of the property. I believe that these guys know our every move. They must have a vantage point somewhere nearby which would enable them to spy on us undetected.” Just two hundred metres from Pretorius’ gate, the steel cross which lights up over Tzaneen each evening, stands guard over the escarpment. Next to this monument of faith, is a watchtower, or a fire lookout tower constructed specifically for the lookout and early warning of runaway veld fires. Inside this tower lives two watchmen equipped with binoculars who keep constant vigil over the entire region including Pretorius and his neighbour’s farms next to it. “I believe that if you have a vantage point which enables you to see across the entire valley all the way down to the road, it would be very easy for you to warn anybody up at my house, of vehicles approaching from the main road,” Pretorius speculated. “Every time they burgled my home, it was when I had just left the property. Each time I arrived back, the suspects had just-just left.” It takes between five and eight minutes to drive up to the farm house from the Deerpark Road.

“Closed for lunch” causes Facebook stir A government employee and his sickly mother were left stranded outside locked doors at the CN Phatudi hospital situated 30 kilometres outside of Lenyenye. Being a resident of Lenyenye, the man was forced to travel with his mother to the Phatudi facility as the local clinic in their hometown was out of stock in the medication the elderly woman requires. “The buildings, yes, the entire hospital, was locked up while the employees had left to the market centre for their lunch break. There was nobody available to assist us,” he lamented. The distraught government employee then took to social media and criticised the management of the hospital. His post caught the attention of the hospital’s CEO who then resolved the matter with much urgency. In just a few hours after the incident the complainant said that the mattter was attended to by the CEO and it was put to rest. It is alleged he was called and rebuked for raising alarm bells. “The service at Dr CN Phatudi Hospital
stinks. A person decides to close the office and go to lunch. Now we are waiting here with sick people” said a Facebook post on the profile of another resident of Lenyenye – the CEO for the Community Development Workers in Mopani. The post raised many comments about the poor state of health in local clinics in and around Tzaneen. Simphiwe Mashasha said “the reception is so weak that when you complain about poor service in the area people are referred to the provincial office. One asks yourself if the head of the hospital is the MEC or the CEO. In one instance I was told to return back home because my hospital file was missing. When I raised the question how that is possible, I was told that they were understaffed and do not have overtime.” Though the matter experienced by the Lenyenye man was attended to after it was raised with the hospital CEO, residents are still complaining. They want to know how could
people get help only after they vented their anger publicly, or after having to receive calls from the management of the hospital and be chastised for going public with the matter before it was reported to the “comrades”. Another social media commentator, Rhuu Mothlape, said “the situation at the Dr CN Phatudi is seen as normal to the disadvantaged communities in many rural communities. Nepotism is the root cause of this kind of behaviour and the culprits know that there would be no consequences. It is the black nation hard at work in destroying itself. Those that are called by the CEO`s are the lucky ones and what about those who are not that well-known?” Nthabiseng Mothabe, another resident from Lenyenye said that she never liked the hospital. “The service is very poor and the nurses are arrogant and tend to insult the patients. It is the way they operate. It is now about time people stand up and do something about the situation. I want to even contact the office of the minis-
ter in the hope that something would be done about the state of public hospitals. Hospital manager, Dr MacDonald Sibuyi responded by saying “please help us to help you. Those who had bad experiences please come and make a formal complaint so that we can follow it up and correct ourselves. The contact number of the CEO is all over the hospital notice boards. Please call immediately if you are badly treated.” The matter received 30 comments and 40 likes on the complainant’s timeline, thus raising the brows of the hospital management. The CEO of the hospital, Hellen Phasha, said “we appreciate your honest comments. Nobody should leave the hospital without getting help. This is your hospital, you escalate your challenges to the management floor if you cannot be helped at the service station. We do have people who are willing to help.” Phasha, who is an ANC member, phoned some of the patients who had complained about poor service at the hospital.

Another heist in Mooketsi Witchcraft claims three more lions Another G4S cash truck was hit by a group of armed terrorists on Monday afternoon. This time the group struck in Mooketsi at around 18:00. It was reported that three vehicles with an unknown number of suspects, pulled the cash truck off the road. As is their usual modes operandi, the suspects then bombed the back of the truck to gain access to the money being transported before they fled the scene. The suspects fled in three SUV’s including a black Jeep, silver Mercedes and a white BMW. Moments after the incident, security and SAPS were activated and a search for the suspects ensued.
It is believed that the suspects fled towards Giyani. Roads were blocked off by various Farm Watch groups in the area through a well coordinated effort. It is believed that nobody was injured in the attack. Monday’s successful cash in transit heist comes less than a month after a group of suspects were stopped in their tracks in Tzaneen after a special forces unit acted on information and prevent a heist at a fuelling station. Though the search continued deep into the night, no suspects were apprehended and at the time of going to print we had received no new information to the contrary.
The absurd cultural beliefs regarding the supposed mystical powers of animal parts has once again led to the senseless and savage slaughter of three beautiful lions. The beasts, one of which is believed to be a cub previously rescued from France, were found decapitated with their paws and tails removed. Indigenous belief systems have led to a number of Africa’s animals being slaughtered into extinction and if nothing is done soon, South Africa will add the king of the beasts to that list. Not unusual is that no suspects were apprehended and the latest lip-service received from the provincial police spokesperson is that a “massive manhunt has been launched.” We have been asked not to release the name of the
farm or the identity of the farmer for fear that it may escalate the crime should the suspects be made aware of the existence of these animals on said property. It has also been widely reported that the very same farm has suffered at the hands of stock thieves recently and that it has become a problematic situation for stock owners in the Gravelotte and Ofcolaco areas. Limpopo police spokesperson, Lt col Moatshe Ngoepe, confirmed that the police are on the lookout for the suspects involved in the incident. He said the third carcass was found in the same spot with no missing parts. “The method used to kill these animals is the subject of the ongoing police investigations.” Anyone with information can contact Colonel Alpheaus Mokale at 082 565 6524.

The Message
Granny’s Grumbles - Merry Monday
One Monday morning I woke up feeling decidedly “down.” I’m sure you all know what I’m talking about. Sometimes we feel that way. Many people feel that way every Monday morning but I actually enjoyed my job so I figured it had something to do with biorhythms or something similar.
Off to work I went. By 8 o’clock the receptionist had still not arrived so that meant I would be running from my office to hers throughout the day seeing to visitors and answering her phone. After doing just that three times I was feeling decidedly peeved with running backwards and forwards. Eventually the fourth caller after hearing my normal good morning greeting said “How are you this morning my angel” Assuming it was one of the engineers being friendly I told him how I felt and was a bit shattered when He started telling me exactly how he could make me feel VERY MUCH BETTER!! I could tell by the switchboard that this was an internal call so asked him his name. To cut a long story short he obviously thought I was the receptionist (we were both from Rhodesia so presumably sounded similar). I got the feeling that hot and heavy conversations were obviously the order of the day between this man and the receptionist and as soon as he realised who I was he plonked the phone down. I had a quiet giggle to myself…... An hour later, whilst at my own desk, the phone rang and rather frantic domestic asked if she could speak to Mr Henshaw – my boss. I said that it was not possible since he was in a meeting but I could pass on a message when the meeting was over. She told me that his wife was stuck up a tree and needed somebody to come and get her down. Now Mr Henshaw was a rather serious man and
I had a feeling he would not be amused if I broke into his meeting with this message, so I phoned a friend who had a teenage son at home and asked if they could go to the house and rescue the wife. A short time later I received a call from Mrs Henshaw who greeted me with “Please tells me that you didn’t give my husband the message about me being up a tree.” I assured her I hadn’t and she thanked me profusely and made me promise that this would be a secret between us. I promised her that it would be but I was dying to know what on earth had possessed her to climb a tree and how was it that she couldn’t get down. It transpired that a new kitten had got itself stuck at the top of a tree and since there was nobody there to help she had climbed up to rescue it. I was impressed - not too shabby for a management wife!! However once she had the kitten in her hands it refused to unlatch itself and she realised that she couldn’t get herself and the kitten down. Eventually after everybody was rescued, the domestic told her that she had left a message for the hubby. Knowing that her husband did not have a great sense of humour she was relieved to discover that I had not passed the message on. My Monday turned out to be not so bad after all and for the remainder of my working life, Mrs Henshaw never forgot my birthday and a certain male employee spent his working days avoiding me.

Hoe lyk jou geestelike dors? Is jy ongelukkig? Dra jy ‘n geheim wat jy met niemand kan deel nie? Is jy bang?

Orange tree furniture made in Limpopo
Elize and Jaco van Zyl have run their successful business for four years.
Orange Tree Furniture opened its doors at Lifestyle Centre on Friday. Situated in its new position, next to Crazy Store, it showcases the beautifully made furniture that the company is well known for throughout the Limpopo province. Owners Elize and Jaco van Zyl bought the ongoing concern in 2014. Elize grew up in Tzaneen and went to Laerskool Tzaneen, then Merensky and matriculated at Ben Vorster. She moved to Pretoria and implemented financial systems for a consulting and software development company for 16 years. Jaco is a fitter and turner by trade and spent a number of years in Springs, Gauteng. The couple, both divorced, found each other, and have been together for 14 years. The sawmill and factory are situated in Nkowankowa with a core group of 33 artisans. The suppliers of their wood are the farmers around the Letsitele area. Citrus trees bear fruit for 30-60 years. Non-productive trees are uprooted. The van Zyls only take the part of the tree that they need and that is the portion between the roots and the first branches. Anything that can be used for firewood thereafter is taken by the farm labourers and the rest is burnt. At the Nkowankowa factory the wood is cut into blocks and from there into planks. The planks then go into a drying oven for two to three weeks. Once out of the oven the wood is laminated and made into longer planks and can then be turned into furniture. In total it’s a six week process. Elize says, “Citrus wood has a fine smooth grain. That’s why it’s a pleasure to work with this wood.” Orange Tree Furniture also has a branch at the Kamogelo Centre in Hoedspruit. Elize does the back office work and manages the two shops. Jaco manages the manufacturing side. Elize’s son, Dylan (23), is also part of Orange Tree Furniture. Elize says, “We have an exclusive range of furniture which complements all areas of your home, interior and exterior. Our range is popular amongst lodges and guest houses. “Our flagship product is the director’s chair, available in either leather or canvas. “Each piece is handcrafted and a truly South African product. Our furniture is one of a kind as we are, as far as we know, the only company manufacturing furniture for citrus wood worldwide”. Orange Tree Furniture is the main supplier of handcrafted gifts to “The Gift Partner”. The Gift Partner supplies handmade and handpicked gifts and décor items both instore and on line.

Fresh and healthy food available for babies Having two young sons, Adinda Tolmay (27) started making healthy food for them from the time they were babies. This led to a natural progression and three months ago she began her delicious and fresh range of baby foods called Yummy Tummies. Many mothers return to work shortly after giving birth and don’t have time to make healthy food for their babies, so head to the local supermarket and buy ready-made food. The Yummy Tummies range comes in three stages. Stage one is very fine, Stage two has a little bit of texture and Stage three has the most texture. Adinda doesn’t use preservatives, sugar or salt. Yummy Tummies products can be frozen for three months. Once defrosted the product must be used within two days. The range is for babies from six months or earlier up to 12 months.
Some of her mouth-watering products, depending on what’s in season, include sweet potato, beetroot with butternut and banana with kiwi. For a six month old baby she recommends only sweet potatoes. At seven months she’d introduce beetroot and butternut mixed with rooibos, honey and apple. From ten months onwards she’d recommend the texturised very fine baby beef stew. The baby fruit packs are extremely popular and Adinda only buys her ingredients from Woolworths as, in her opinion, Woolworths stocks the freshest produce. There’s a seven day waiting period as everything is freshly prepared. Adinda’s
kitchen at her home is as hygienic as it gets and she also wears a mop cap when preparing her Yummy Tummies range. She delivers to the Plaashuisie (formerly Corner House) on Boundary Street in Tzaneen. Weekly Yummy Tummies packs are popular but monthly orders are also starting to come in on order. Current clients are from Louis Trichardt, Ofcolaco, Letsitele, Mooketsi and Tzaneen. Menus are available at the Plaashuisie and also at the following internet sites. Adinda’s Facebook page is “Yummy Tummies – homemade baby food.” You can also email her at yummytummies.tzn@gmail.com.

Take back your weekend
Rubbish is a nuisance. Driving it to the rubbish dump yourself is an even bigger one and something that most of us really don’t list on the top of the weekend priority list. There is the paperwork and the money and the hard labour and all the rest of it that keeps you from starting that braai fire and watching the finals in peace. Wouldn’t it be nice if there were someone who could go through all that schlep for you?
Couldn’t you just pay someone to make that rubbish problem disappear? Well there is and you can. Enter Quick Skip. As a registered transporter of waste in command of a fleet of 27 skips and two trailers, Ruan Oosthuizen and his team can most certainly make weekends what they used to be in ‘the good old days’. Not only can they collect and remove your household waste for you, but because of their specially designed and highly
mobile skips, Quick Skip can also deliver building materials and gardening compost directly to your site. The skips are not the massive stinky kind either. They are smart looking bright green 2 Cube skips available on a daily, weekly or monthly lease. This means that unlike the unsightly bigger skips which stand outside on the pavement and inevitably run over with waste before they are collected, Quick Skip is availa-
ble when you need it, for how long you need it and for whatever purpose you need. The Quick Skip team take care of the paperwork at the landfill site and transport to and from site so that you don’t have to. This comes at a minimal price too and is available within a 50 kilometre radius around Tzaneen. For pricing and service related queries contact these guys right now on 060 974 9383 and find out how you can take back your weekends.

The influence of fuel increases on property prices Ongoing, escalating fuel costs – with yet another hike on the cards for September (2018) coupled with rising traffic congestion in South Africa’s cities, is playing an increasing role in the locations selected where consumers will buy or rent a home. Ultimately, this also impacts on housing demand and price. “The ongoing increase in the fuel price is contributing to the way we live and work,” says Dr Andrew Golding, chief executive of the Pam Golding Property group. “It’s also changing the way companies think in regard to office layouts and the time employees spend in the office, with many adopting far more flexible working hours including work-from-home scenarios for both entrepreneurs and staff, and co-work spaces which eliminate seldom-used space.
“All of this has a direct bearing not only on the built environment but also on where people can and choose to live, and there are three distinct trends which are apparent. Firstly, the advent and growing demand for ‘live, work, play’ hubs in various centres around the country, where people can walk to work and enjoy access to all amenities and leisure activities right on their doorstep. This is also an environment which buzzes with activity way beyond the ‘traditional’ 8 to 5 working hours, which is why the mixed-use development business model is proving so successful in prime commercial nodes or hubs. “Secondly, the rising popularity of properties on key transport corridors for easy commutes via rail, road and air, including those who live
within easy reach of airports for business travel as and when required. And then there is a third group of people who are opting out of the frenetic pace of city life to country environments where they can enjoy a slower paced lifestyle either in retirement or while still generating income.” So, in short, rising fuel prices is creeping into rising costs of not only our consumable living cost, but now also affecting our property costs. Bear this in mind when purchasing your next property.

New home for House of Interiors
House of Interiors has become a household name in Limpopo for good reason. Since 1998 Renthea Geyer has delivered top quality products for customers all around South Africa. Renthea Geyer, a well-known name in the interior decorating genre, started her successful business in 1998 from a mere 200m² rented showroom, but as she expanded her ranges and services for her unique, upmarket products, the growing demand allowed her to move to her own 1600m² premises situated in Louis Trichardt, which included her upholstery and headboard factory. Through the years and as the demand steadily grew, branches were opened in Tzaneen and Savannah Mall, Polokwane, although her services are offered in Gauteng and Limpopo. Ever increasing demand lead her to start a
development project in August 2017, for a new and bigger showroom in Tzaneen, which will be able to address her customers’ needs as well as offering a bigger variety of unique products to them. The completion and grand opening for this state-of-the –art showroom is earmarked for September 2018. Check the media and Bulletin’s Facebook page for more information on their opening date. For unmistakable unique and stylish interior decorating items, go visit House of Interiors during their grand opening during September at their new showroom on the corner of Boundary and Loop Street (opposite Welmart Electrical) for a wide selection of interior decorating items ranging from furniture, wall art, interior decorating items, soft furnishings and much more.

First ever three-day stage race held in the Kloof Charl Naudé, President of Haenertsburg Rotary and Marc Noné from Magoebaskloof Adventures, both avid cyclists, had a dream that came into fruition for the first time this past weekend. More than a year ago, the two organisations started planning the first ever Magoebaskloof MTB, Limpopo’s premier mountain bike three-day stage race. Cheerio Gardens, under Sarah Hillary, opened her farm as a meeting point. Colleen Venter and her staff from the village Red Plate restaurant fed the hungry cyclists at the Wedding Venue for three days, Charlton Pent manned the bar and Neil Geldenhuys served light meals and pizzas at the Cheerio Tea gardens. A tented village was erected above the Wedding Venue. Rotary brought in showers and toilets. There were tents housing a team of five physiotherapists who mainly massaged weary legs, a chill area with bean bags and Pieter le Roux with his coffee caravan serving a variety of coffees. There was a guarded and secure area for the mostly financed bikes that cost from R200, 000.00 upwards. At the start/finishing line was a team of four paramedics that had to deal with a broken collar bone on day two with no other injuries reported. Mr Bertus Prinsloo was the advanced life support paramedic, Frik Schoeman and Lee Vorster were the intermediate life support paramedics and JJ Bosch was the basic life support. There was a special SOS system in case of any problems. Deneys Barry from Rotary was project manager and besides doing an incredible amount of work before the event, he was on hand during the three days. Water problems surfaced on Day One and Deneys together with JJ Roestoff of Cheerio Gardens sorted out the hiccups with no-one any the wiser. It drizzled

on Friday, the first day, with mist, slippery conditions and mud. When the bikers came in after the race the water problem had just been sorted and the bike cleaners jumped with alacrity to hose down the bikes. There was also a bike workshop and one biker snapped his handle bars. Gerrit Pieterse from Timex was in charge of the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification System). Zander Middleton, a Limpopo cyclist, and Marc Noné spent countless weekends plotting the various single track routes through indigenous forests, up and down steep slopes, over rivulets, through the Woodbush and up to mountain tops. There were 240 two-man team entrants with 18 individuals. Cyclists took on either the Magoeba Race (some 70km/day) or the Magoeba Trail (some 40 km/day). The race format used a clover leaf layout that started and ended at Cheerio Gardens every day. Bikers said it was exhilarating to be shrouded in mist on Day One and they were seeded after Friday’s race. Day Two, a different route, went up to the Iron Crown Mountain. There was no view from this highest point in Limpopo as the mist prevented the view. Day Three was a

shorter route and also a sunny day to end off this challenging event. Nowhere is there an endurance race like this and it will now form an annual event. Quick and easy registration was handled by Anne Harman, Maria da Silva, Lana Quinn, Daria Gorbaszewicz and Robin Gardner from Haenertsburg Rotary. Chrisna Stander and Anne Harman were in charge of marshalling, a very challenging feat. Fences were erected to secure the bikes and a new dirt road was created for visitors’ parking. Letaba SPCA and Warriors were two of the more than ten sponsored water points. The rest of the Rotarians covered all other needed areas. Funds from the event will be allocated to Haenertsburg Rotary and Charl said that these will

A Protea shot! The South African National Archery Association (SANAA) recently announced that the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) Colours Board have awarded Protea colours to Canell Jackson, an archer from Merensky High. These colours are the highest awards that can be bestowed upon any competitor in any of the recognized sporting codes in the country. The tenth grader will represent South Africa as a member of the prestigious Protea team at the International Field Archery Association (IFAA) Championships on the 13th of October this year. These championships will be hosted in Potchefstroom and will see the local archer compete against Hawkeyes from all across the globe. “Merensky High School congratulates this star archer on her achievement and wish her all of the best in the competition,” said Magnus Steyn, Headmaster at Merensky High.

Team Red Ants (Stanford Lake College’s adventure team) is currently A1 Series leaders ahead of a few professional, full-time AR teams, with just two races left in the series. Series winners gain a free entry to the 2019 GODZone 500km race in New Zealand. The team was founded in Magoebaskloof by Alumnus Brian Gardner, who is still Team Co-Captain, and former staff member, Gary Townsend, and still serves as the Team’s traditional home-ground. Two of the SLC teams will travel to Cape St Francis this weekend for the 120km Kinetic Full Moon race.
