Tzaneen will spend R757 617 this month to send 126 of its employees to Swaziland. This is in order for them to participate in the annual Southern Africa Inter-Municipal Sports Association (SAIMSA) games to be held from the 22nd to the 29th of September in Manzini. The teams will be staying at the Esibayini Lodge. Of the 121 employees, 115 of them are members of the various sporting teams who will represent the GTM in the 11 different sporting codes which include angling, chess, darts, pool, netball, volleyball, soccer, marathon running, tennis, table tennis and golf. Six councillors for sport, the town’s mayor,

Maripe Mangena, the municipal manager, Thapelo Matlala, the director for Community Services, Alex Nkuna and an Operational Health and Safety officer will be accompanying the teams. All athletes will be transported to the venue in Swaziland by bus and two Quantum mini-busses. The councillors will travel there separately with their own transport. According to Neville Ndlala, spokesperson for the GTM, the R757 617 paid forward by the municipality is in addition to the R200 monthly contributions by the various team members to cover the costs of their participation in the games. This logically excludes full paid leave

which the employees will be receiving while out of the country. “This trip is part of a team building exercise and employee wellbeing as well as networking,” he said. “We have participated for over ten years, we have won gold, silver and bronze and other lower positions in the past.” SAIMSA launched the games in 2003 with the inaugural event hosted in Namibia. Initially, only municipalities in Botswana, Namibia, Swaziland, Mozambique and South Africa participated, but currently more than 60 municipalities from across SADC participate. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Binne in asook direk langs hierdie brandbane.

— Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

More water interruptions for Ba-Phalaborwa Residents of Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality should gear themselves for water interruptions this weekend as the Lepelle Northern Water (LNW) a water services agency in Mopani will be doing technical repairs at the main water pump station. This comes at the time residents of Namakgale were complaining that water supply in the township was interrupted with some areas going without water for weeks. Though some residents were thankful to authorities that the matter had been attended to and water finally restored two weeks ago, others lamented the lack of water for some weeks with the councillors not calling meetings to attend to the matter. Given Sekedi from Namakgale, said he just wanted to know why some parts of the community had been going without water and why none of this was communicated through to the residents.

Mopani District Municipality (MDM), spokesperson Witness Tiva, said the reason there was no water at Namakgale was due to the to the interruptions that happened. He said that that on Friday the reservoirs were still being filled and thereafter there would be water in the township. Tiva added that in order to repair the main water pump machine, water supply in the area would be interrupted on Wednesday, the 5th of September. Tiva released a statement to this effect last week which had certain residents hot under the collar. A source in the BPM told Bulletin that the reason for the water shortage was due to an outstanding amount owed to Lepelle by the Mopani District. We have also been told that Phalaborwa currently owes Mopani roughly R180 million. For what they owe this amount is unclear. The DA is investigating the matter. “Residents of the Ba-Phalaborwa municipality

will experience water supply interruptions as the Lepelle Northern Water will be doing technical repairs at the main water station. There will be low water pressure from 18:00 (yesterday, 5th of September) to 06:00 am the following day (today, 6th of September). Though the impact may be minimal, residents are advised to use water sparingly,” said Tiva. He went on to say that some reservoirs will not be receiving water from the main water pump station during the days in question. “The high lying areas of Phalaborwa, Namakgale, Lulekane, Makhushwane, Selwane, and Mashishimale would be affected. The repairs are done in order to avert future water cuts in the area. The community is assured that they will never experience total shut down of water hence there are technical repairs in place.” — Jan Mafetsa Foto deur: Willie & Mariette Source: www.dwa.gov.za Information updated: 03/09/2018

Couple’s home wrecked after Agatha inferno Arson is believed to have been the cause of a devastating fire that claimed a home in the Agatha area over the weekend. “Witnesses at a compound on the Agatha ABQ road said that they saw an African man light fires in the bush and then run away,” said Pepe Limantour, the owner of a home in the area that suffered extensive damages in the fire. “And what would they have done had anybody caught the guy in case?” The fire was reported at around 10:30 on Sunday morning and by midday it had reached the point where the Letaba Fire Protection Association (LFPA) called in their air wing to prevent the fire from becoming uncontrollable. Two helicopters and a spotter plane soon arrived and started fighting the flames from the skies. It was a sight to witness and soon a number of locals had taken up vantage points along the Agatha Road to experience the teams in action. On the other side of the road, however, Marie and Pepe were helping neighbours fight the fire which had spread into the residential plots in the vicinity. Marie and two of her neighbours were beating the fires in the field near a Eucalyptus grove about 50 metres from their property. Pepe had taken their tractor out and was a far way off into the bush on their neighbour’s property. “At one stage I remembered saying to the boys who were helping me that we need to watch for embers that could easily drift off in the wind and land on our thatched roof. I looked up and watched in horror as a tiny ember came off one of the tall blue gums and drifted almost in slow motion over our yard and onto our roof!” explained a still shocked Marie moments after the inferno. “It was surreal and at that moment I tried to dial our neighbour closest to the house on my phone but my mind hit a complete blank. That’s when I just shouted a voice note over onto our neighbourhood watch WhatsApp group and started running back to the house.” Pepe was unaware of the blaze at his home as he was too far away to notice the commotion. Within minutes, hordes of bakkies from neighbouring properties stormed onto the Limantour property and started dousing the roof with hoses from their vehicles. Groups of young men rushed into the house and started evacuating as much of the furniture and other household items as they could. The Mopani District Fire Department were alerted, but arrived long after the roof had been extinguished.

EXCLUSIVE!

“It was prayer that saved our home, I am certain of it,” said Marie. “I asked everyone on my social groups to pray for us and they did. Normally a thatched roof would ignite within seconds and ours did not. Thank God for our neighbours!” Though only the roof was destroyed, the couple have suffered great losses because of the water and smoke damage as is the usual case with house fires. When we walked through the house the water was at ankle height in some places. Persian carpets,

couches and exotic wooden furniture collected from their international travels have all sustained serious damage. “If we had water in our canal, we could have prevented this catastrophe,” explained Pepe. “I installed four big water guns on our property precisely in anticipation of something like this. But due to the debacle with the Phusela Canal, all of us residents in this area only have water four days a week. Today was not one of those days and so the guns were rendered inoperable.” As for the fire itself, it was brought under control by 17:30 Sunday afternoon and the choppers and spotter were called off. No other homes in the area were reportedly damaged or destroyed by the fire.

Death Valley claims two lives a month

The R71 between Polokwane and Tzaneen is ranked as the tenth most dangerous road to travel in the country. This is according to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) who released their list of the top 20 most dangerous routes in South Africa, in March this year. Realistically though, if one takes into account that the top seven spots are occupied by various sections of the N1 and N2 highways, Magoebaskloof pass could be seen as the third most dangerous route. There have been 91 accidents on the Magoebaskloof pass and 18 on the R528 Georges Valley road since the start of January 2018 to last week Friday alone. In total 18 people have died in these accidents – the majority of which were caused by heavy transport trucks. This means that on average there are 11 accidents and two deaths a month on these two routes only. Friday’s accident claimed the life of a driver when the interlink he was steering along the R528 capsized and spread his load of approximately 38 tonnes of bricks across the tarmac. Emergency services had to use the Jaws of Life to extract the body from the completely demolished cab. It took them more than an hour and a half. According to the Limpopo Department of

WIN!

Transport however, these roads are open for use by transport trucks despite the very obvious dangers they pose to general traffic commuters. We managed to speak to Matome Moremi Taueatsoala, the spokesperson for the department, after we were unable to reach him on any of his cell phone numbers and finally managed to pry a response out of him over WhatsApp. He confirmed the statistics above, and shockingly stated that the department’s view on the possible reasons for these extremely shocking numbers were due to the skills of the drivers. “Heavy motor vehicles are forcing to use Makgobaskloof road even if their vehicles are not in the status of handling the road environment,” he said [we quoted him verbatim]. “In some instances drivers themselves lack skills to can control their vehicles in that road environment. The department urge heavy motorists drivers to avoid using Makgobaskloof road and use R528.” He then stated that the roads are open for use by “all types of vehicles”. We found this strange as there are large cautionary signs along the R71 (one in Haenertsburg and one in Polokwane) which clearly state that heavy vehicles should not travel on these routes. “All the routes are correct, it depend on the strength of the vehicle and the driver,” he

added [again quoted verbatim]. “Currently accidents are investigated by RTMC, the department does not have capacity to investigate.

Mopani makes new promises for Bali One of the biggest failures on the Mopani District Municipality’s long list of shortcomings has to be the forgotten R2.9 million Moshupatsela (locally known as Bali) farm situated 9 kilometres outside Tzaneen. A once flourishing 158 hectare farm boasting 40 000 mango trees and creating hundreds of jobs to needy families in the area was purchased by the MDM in 2007 from the Land Bank. A decade has passed and the farm lies fallow to this day. The only marked achievement being the pit in which to make funds disappear as is evident by looking at the history books. There were a lot of shiny plans unveiled by Humphrey Mokgobi, the MDM’s mayor at the time, who boldly stated that they planned to grow orchards, produce vegetables and dried fruit, juice and mango atchar on this prime agricultural land. Apparently the farm was bought from the Land Bank in order to drive the empowerment of youth agricultural cooperatives. This never happened. Through the municipality’s initial orchard management project a total of 16 people were employed including six farm workers and the promise of “hundreds more jobs” to come. R800 000 was received from the European Union towards the expansion of the project which was to include a fresh produce market in Nkowankowa that would create further employment. This project failed miserably and the money disappeared. The municipality sat with another, bigger, problem. The 81 families who lived and worked on the farm for the previous owners, Clifford Steyn, before it was handed to the Land Bank after he died. These people who were employed on this farm when it was still a valuable asset to the local agricultural market, were now unem-

ployed and refusing to leave the premises. The municipality attempted to evict the squatters by tearing down their shacks, but they remained and soon started stripping the farm buildings for materials to erect new dwellings. The local office of the DA even sponsored the squatters with tents. They are still living there to this day. Local media reported that a palisade fence was erected around the property at an alleged cost of R18 million sometime during 2008/2009 in order to prevent trespassing. There is very little left of this fence as portions of it has been stripped and sold for scrap metal – allegedly by the squatters who are still living there – and the remainder has been left to rust away. A man, Essau Remaketse Nzutha (33), was eventually arrested in November 2014 for stealing fence material worth R224 050 from Bali. Much was reported on this matter in the ten years leading up to last week when residents noticed a very large billboard being erected at the entrance to this derelict farm. It read “Mosupatshela Agri-Hub” in large green lettering. The shoddily constructed frame of the billboard itself seems very rickety in its assembly and it is feared that the first strong winds will relocate the sign somewhere closer to Modjadjiskloof. Nevertheless, something seems to be stirring again at the infamous site and we asked the

newly appointed spokesperson for the MDM, Witness Tiva, for clarity. Tiva denied the claims that R18 million had been spent on the erection of the palisade fencing and insisted that the fence had been erected in February this year (2018) at a cost of R2.1 million. Bulletin was at the farm on Monday

afternoon and we could not see a new fence of any sorts. About the new “Agri-Hub” he explained in a press statement that an agreement between the Mopani District Municipality and the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform will soon see the Mashupatsela farm outside Tzaneen starting to be operational again. “Guided by our vision to be a food basket of Southern Africa and a tourism destination of choice, the Mopani District Municipality partnered with the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform in response to a call by our national government to ensure that 44 AgriHubs are established across the country. A portion of this farm will be used to house such a hub,” said Tiva. “The hub will have facilities such as a storage/warehouse facility, cold stor-

age, Agri-processing facility and a packaging facility for local and international market purposes, just to mention a few. The local market will also be easily accessible to hawkers who are currently traveling long distances to buy the fruits, vegetables and other basic amenities that they are selling in villages and towns found within our five local municipalities.” He further said that the Local Economic Development (LED) office of the district municipality will soon start negotiations with farmer’s organisations, small scale and commercial farmers to ensure that the facility is used to its maximum capacity. According to Tiva, This will go a long way in creating job opportunities for locals and also deal with food security. “Other agricultural and economic opportunities are being explored in order for the remaining hectors on the farm are used effectively to benefit the local economic sector. A palisade fence has since been erected on a portion of the farm to ensure that there is controlled access to the farm,” he concluded. “Security personnel have been deployed on a 24-hour basis to ensure that the existing property, including the fence is not vandalised.” At the time of going to print we had received no word on the estimated costs which the MDM will inevitably incur in order to save this farm. The costs will be astronomical and it is not certain who will be asked to fit the bill. Judging by the number of people employed and the flourishing production of this farm throughout the last 11 years, the pipedream does seem promising indeed. We will continue to monitor the progress of Moshupatsela and report to our readers on any new developments, should there in fact be any. Historia magister est optimus.

Water tank donated to local primary school Haenertsburg Primary School has a special place in the hearts of many locals as their children went to that school. It’s more than 130 years old. A dedicated staff educate and care for the many little children, most of them in hostel. One of the concerns for years has been insufficient water. There is enough to run the school but not enough to water the garden as well. Local essential oil farmer and a member of the governing body, Julie McMahon, approached Haenertsburg Rotary for help. The Rotarians of Haenertsburg are a formidable mix of insightful, innovative, dedicated and community minded people. Rotary thus donated a water tank to the Haenertsburg Primary School. The tank holds 2500 litres of water. Julie’s son, Toban, oversaw and

installed the tank with the water supply coming from a lengthy gutter. The tank filled up overnight when it rained shortly after installation. Then plants were obtained with donations from Cheerio Gardens, Wegraakbosch and Applegrange. Efforts culminated in a ceremony where water was led through a hose pipe for the first time to the newly planted flowerbed. The children, with the help of adults, planted the small and large azalea bushes, fuchsias, bromeliads and dietes. The aim is not just to beautify the gardens but to teach the children the value

of water, how to plant and then how to maintain by watering the plants regularly from the new water tank. This project will be ongoing as the intention is to create more flower beds for the school. The children returned to class and staffers entertained guests with tea, coffee and snacks. During the informal chat mention was made that Miss Bets Cross, one of the teachers of yes-

teryear, was the tallest teacher ever seen. This prompted the Secretary, Sonia Liebenberg, to bring out old photos of the school. A black and white photo of the staff in 1958 certainly shows a very tall Miss Cross. Principal Roseline Sebata thanked everyone for their support. Roseline has been principal of Haenertsburg Primary School since 2013 and gave her full support to this gardening project.

Children proudly gather around the new water tank. R3.5 million for graves The cemetery situated on the Agatha road will soon get a facelift after a project to upgrade and make provision for more graves commenced. It is expected to be completed in November this year. The R3,5 million project was initiated by the GTM Mayor, Maripe Mangena, who said of it as being a means to address some of the complains raised by community members. Municipal spokesperson, Neville Ndlala, said “the project incorporates the construction of the drainage system to control soil erosion as well as grading and clearing to make provision for new graves. A river stream exists between the area currently used for the graveyard, and the area where the new graves are to constructed. This makes access to the new site impossible.” Incidentally this “river stream” happens to be a branch of the Great Letaba River. Sections of this river were exposed by Bulletin as being deathly polluted (pun intended). Ndlala added that as part of the upgrade a 2,4m x 1,8 low level bridge will be constructed across the stream to allow mourners access to the new site which will cover 1,7 hectors. Ndlala further

said some of the complaints they received from the community was that the cemetery was full and needed to be extended. The 3,5 million mini tender was allocated to Moepeng trading CC. In another development upgrades at the Nkowankowa and Lenyenye cemeteries, according to the municipal spin doctor, are also included in the new developments from the community services department. Ndlala in statement said that the cemetery at Nkowankowa has reached capacity and the matter is still pending in the courts over the land the cemetery is to be extended into. He said that when the cemetery at Lenyenye reached its capacity, a new cemetery was established between Khujwana village and Moime. This is situated on the land which was allocated by the Bathlabine Traditional Authority. During the State of the Municipality Address (SOMA) in May, mayor Maripe Mangena said that “the municipality will construct a tarred road between Moime and Khujwana passing through the cemetery.” — Jan Mafetsa

The VBS Saga continues The South African Communist Party in Limpopo has vowed to press charges against the former directors of the now defunct Venda Building Society (VBS), Government senior officials and members of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) of the ruling ANC for their role in the collapse of the bank. SACP Limpopo spokesperson, Machike Thobejane, said they want the bank to be rescued and instead the directors of the bank who allegedly looted about R1.5 billion from the bank, be prosecuted. He said that with elections around the corner, lack of action on the defunct bank will send a wrong message to the electorates that it is right to defraud the poor. “It is worrying that the only bank which was black owned and in which millions were invested in by the poor, could just be looted and it be treated as if nothing happened. We want action be taken against the directors of the bank

who shared the R1.5 billion. We want them to be arrested together with the members of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) who are implicated in the crisis,” said Thobejane. “We are busy conducting our investigation into the matter and when it was completed we will approach the law enforcement agencies with concrete evidence. Thereafter the matter will be taken up with the ruling party. Though some of the names are known to the public, we will when they are officially charged, ensure that disciplinary action is taken within the organisation.” The call comes at a stage when there is currently efforts launched within the Limpopo PEC to convince the national office of the ANC to rescue the bank by converting it into a provincial bank. The aim is then to have this bank managed by the struggling Limpopo Economic Development Agency (LEDA). — Jan Mafetsa

Granny’s Grumbles - The Chinese Restaurant

Some fifty years ago in Salisbury a rather strange event took place. Before I proceed I must tell you that this is not a good read for anybody with a queasy stomach. A young lady by the name of Rhoda was called to the reception area at her place of work just after tea. Two policemen asked if she would mind

going to police headquarters with them. As soon as she arrived she was taken into a room and an interrogation started. Had she sent a winter coat to a well-known drycleaners earlier that morning? She agreed that she had indeed sent a coat to the drycleaners via the office messenger that morning. Did she remember what was in the pockets? She said she was sure there was nothing in the pockets. They insisted that there was something in the pockets and she should think very carefully about what it was. Poor Rhoda couldn’t remember putting anything into the pockets of the coat and said so. The policeman then asked if she remembered the last time she had worn the coat. Rhoda gave them the name of a well-known Chinese restaurant and the interrogator then asked her once again to think carefully about the contents of the coat pocket. After a long think – Rhoda said that she remembered that whilst eating her chop-suey there was a very grisly piece of meat which she couldn’t bite into pieces so eventually had taken a paper napkin to her mouth and spat the offending piece of meat into it and stuck it into her pocket. Aha! The Eureka moment. Both cops looked happy with the answer and returned her to her place of work. Poor Rhoda didn’t understand what on earth was going on until a couple of days later when one of the cops returned her coat complete with the paperwork

indicating that it had been dry-cleaned and told her that the problem had been sorted. He explained to her that upon receiving the coat they lady in charge of the dry-cleaning establishment had gone through the pockets which was the norm. Upon unravelling the paper napkins she found the tip of a human thumb which had obviously been gnawed upon, so she phoned the police. The police obviously thought some dirty work was afoot – possibly the thumb was kept as a memento of some grisly crime. After the original chat with Rhoda the police had proceeded to the Chinese restaurant to interview the employees, but didn’t have to do much investigating since the chef himself had an enormous bandage swathed around the remains of his thumb. It transpired that the chef had inadvertently sliced half of his thumb into an enormous pot of chop suey and, not wanting to waste an entire pot of the delicious dish had not mentioned it to anybody. He thought it would obviously be swallowed by some unsuspecting diner or dumped on to a side plate. Little did he know that he would end up being interrogated for hours? Rhoda – who suffered from a weak stomach, only just made it to the bathroom in time to throw up. She felt ill for days, but the cops were happy that the case had been solved and I think the restaurant was exceedingly lucky that this happened in the days when there was no chance of the story “going viral”.

Adriaan van Tonder Knielende geloof. Lees Johannes 11:28-37 Dis ’n aangrypende gedeelte in Johannes.

Add the top layers of bread and drip or spread olive oil on them. Place in a hinged grid (toeklaprooster) and braai over medium-low heat coals. Ingredients 4 ounces cream cheese, softened 2 1/2 tablespoons chives, thinly sliced 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 24 pickled Peppadew peppers, drained and patted dry 1 cup all purpose flour 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1 cup panko breadcrumbs vegetable oil for frying salt and pepper to taste

each pepper and fill with the cream cheese mixture.

Method Preheat oil (in a fryer or medium pot filled about 3 inches) to 350°.

Place flour in a shallow bowl and repeat with the eggs and panko. Dredge the peppers into the flour followed by the eggs and finally the panko. Repeat the breading process on the cut side of each pepper so it has a double layer of breading. (this will help keep the cream cheese mixture from bursting through the breading while frying).

Place cream cheese, chives and black pepper in a small mixing bowl and mix together until completely combined. Scoop mixture into a Ziploc bag and snip one corner off. Place the cut end into the center of

Cover the potjie pot with the lid and simmer gently over low heat coals for 20 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the pasta heated though.

Fry about 6 peppers at a time, for 3 to 5 minutes or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and lightly season with salt and pepper. Serve immediately.

Sprinkle over the biltong powder, if using, and serve hot. Cooking Tip: Use wet biltong which can soften easily in the potjie. This dish can be made on a stove–top and finished in the oven if preferred.

A Cat’s Tale by Unicorns We all have to learn to be brave in life at some point in time. In this year’s Intersen concert the grade 4 to 7 children of Unicorn Preparatory, portrayed the story of Johnny Smith (Nohah Jones) who learned to be brave by rescuing the alley cats in his neighbourhood. The evil and wicked Mrs Catalina de Feline (Cayleigh Preece) caught the cats with the magic catnip perfume and wanted to use their tails as handbag slings for her new fashion designer handbags commissioned by the French fashionistas. Her special helpers Lazy and Lozer (played by Leyla Human and Klara Pretorius) lost their jobs as they did not support this venture. Johnny was faced with difficulties getting his very busy parents’ (Asia Falleyn & Siraaj Omar) attention and was often bullied until he learned how to embrace his own inner strength. It took a bunch of alley cats namely Macavity, Terry, Jenny Dots, Kitty, Coco and Kiki (played by

Leo Peters, Zila Kruger, Keira Booth, Wanga Chauke, Yvonne Botha and Ntalo Mashimbye) to teach him how to embrace braveness and to stand up for what is right. The police (Grade 6 boys) had to interfere and arrested the culprit (Mrs de Feline) and in the end Johnny received his heart’s desire to own his very own cat. Daniel Larson is the puppeteer who presents Johnny in the end with his life-like cat. The wise owls (Grade 4 girls) are there to guide Johnny all along his journey on this exciting path. On Tuesday 4 September, a special matinee show was performed for all the grandparents in the school and on Thursday 6 September a gala evening was hosted. In the end everything worked out for the good for the cats, the boy and his parents. The stage play was produced by Alida du Preez and Annriette van Wyk.

hard-working runners won 20 overall LLSV medals, 9 of them gold, and had 48 athletes placed in the LLSV top-10, with top athletes in every age category. Their strongest age category was the boys’ un-

der-9, where six out of the top 10 were boys from Pfunanane. The best 11 athletes from the team will now continue on to the South African Championships held on the 8th of September in Port Elizabeth.

The VIVA 7’s rugby day was held at Frans du Toit High School in Phalaborwa on Saturday, 1 September. 10 Senior and 10 junior teams from Limpopo rocked up to enjoy a fast and furious day of high energy rugby. Merensky High School’s junior team had an excellent start against Piet Potgieter (26-0), Ellisras (12-10) and Louis Trichardt (58-0), but was bogged down by the hosts (7-10). With this they ended first in their pool. Hoërskool Pietersburg won the cup semi final against the Plasie team, but all was not lost as the youngsters reigned victorious in the plate final

against Ellisras, 22-17. In a roller-coaster-day, Merensky’s senior team kicked off with a 21-12 win against Ellisras, wherafter Ben Viljoen from Groblersdal trumped them 22-17. Ben Vorster managed a 36-0 win, but the Plasies regrouped and won Tom Naudé convincingly 36-12. In the bowl semi final the Plasies beat Heuwelkruin 24-12, resulting in a final match against Tom Naudé to determine the bowl winner. Sadly, this game proved to be their Waterloo as they could only score 19 points compared to the Tommies’ 40.

Gentleman’s chivalry in rivalry It’s called the gentleman’s game. But when it comes to any sporting event which forces ages old rivalries out of the ditches, Christopher Hitchens said it best, “a gentleman is someone who is never rude by accident.” So when the Plasies met the Vossies in a league match last week, both teams knew that either one would have to hat-tip the other before the evening’s supper. Because you see, Merensky High School’s first team knew that Ben Vorster High School’s first team knew that the Plasies could beat them. And they did. After winning the toss in this league

match, Ben Vorster decided to bat first and were all out for 63 runs in the 19th over. Kieran Albertus, Merensky’s best bowler, took four wickets in just six overs, conceding only 25 runs. Louis Botha also did excellent work and took three wickets in six overs, conceding 22 runs. When the Plasies went out to bat, Ben Vorster seemed confident in the 31st over when Merensky had only a single wicket standing, but alas, Ruan van der Schyff hit a boundary, resulting in a gloriously celebrated win for the Plasies. Ben Vorster has surely chalked up the loss and will definitely be look-

ing for retribution. That reprisal came sooner than expected when during the u/15 match at Ben Vorster, the Vossies won convincingly. On the Merensky side, Christian Barnard took two wickets in seven overs, conceding 29 runs. Batting buddies, Phillip Ludick and Ockert Schoeman, contributed 19 and 16 runs respectively. The Plasie boys have similarly noted the Vossie-victory and offered a hat-tip in acknowledgement of future redemption when the two neighbours again meet later in the season.

Premier League seasons ends well The last matches of the Limpopo Premier League hockey for primary schools took place on Friday, 31st of August and Saturday, the 1st of September. The Laerskool Tzaneen Primary boys’ teams played in the semi-final match against their neighbours, Unicorn Preparatory School. In a really well contested match, Unicorn managed to win by one goal. Later in the evening it was time to face Laerskool Pietersburg-Oos. Although the visitors had beaten the Larries 1/0, the Larries never stopped fighting and showed great sportsmanship throughout the game. The boys ended the hockey season in 4th place. Early on Saturday morning the girls won their semi-final match against Unicorn by 8 goals. Then it was time to face Laerskool Pietersburg-Oos in the final where they seemed to have met their match and stepped off the pitch in a 0-2 defeat. The girls ended their season as runners-up in the LPL league for 2018. Dineo Letsoalo of the Open-A girls’ team was crowned the top goal scorer throughout the league with 8 goals. Tzaneen’s mini hockey players travelled to Polokwane and they enjoyed playing matches at Laerskool Pietersburg-Oos. In total, 59 matches were played on the day, 42 were won, 9 matches ended in a draw and 8 were lost. Some of the other Tzaneen teams travelled to Dr Annecke to play matches against Mariepskop Primary. The Tzaneen teams won three of their matches, drew one and lost one on the day.

Larries claim redemption On Wednesday, the 29th of August, St. George’s College revisited their Laerskool Tzaneen Primary opponents for the second round of matches in a two part series between the schools. Larries were looking for retribution following their defeat the first time round and sure enough, they seemed to have learned from their past mistakes. It was a different team that faced the St George’s boys last week and through their efforts saw the U/11 teams end their matches “Even Stevens” with a one-all draw. The U/12 hosts did not manage enough oomph however, and fell short of victory to a highly motivated St George’s team by two goals to nil. In redemption however, the First team manned up to the task and set the records straight by scalping the visitors in a one-nil victory despite the blistering bushveld sun.
