In an effort to alleviate some of the effects of a lack of proper financial management and a historically blasé approach to general maintenance by the municipality, AfriForum Tzaneen have taken it upon themselves to donate five brand new stop signs to the GTM Traffic Department. The handover was initiated on Monday morning by AfriForum Tzaneen Head, Pieter Venter. “It may appear to be a small gesture, but it is our way of addressing the bigger issues which lie dormant beneath the service delivery crisis,” Venter said. “There are good people that work at the municipality in every department. The trouble is that these good people do not have the right support in terms of financial backing. Often times they want to do the job, but they cannot because there simply is not enough funding made available to them.” The problem with the stop signs in town for example, is a simple albeit rather comical one indeed. Each time a stop sign is run over by a truck or a drunk driver or for whatever other reason things like that happen, the GTM team replants the sign. This results in the gradual “shrinking” of the sign as the pole is straightened and replanted.
With the new signs, five intersections will now once again become a little safer. The only problem left for officials to concentrate on now, will be to actually enforce the law and fine those motorists who ignore these stop signs as if they were cooking instructions. In the meantime, Afriforum Tzaneen has once
again started clearing the powerlines as they did two years ago. Through the help of local tree feller and volunteer firefighter, Jaco Rautenbach and his team from Kingsland Farming, Afriforum is lending a hand to bring an end to the electrical woes of the Greater Tzaneen area. — Jeff Jackson jeff@bulletin.us.com

Monday morning we received a call from a concerned motorist off the R528 Georges Valley road. The caller explained that “it would be the funniest photograph we would take in our lives.” It was. But the heavily overloaded, and now capsizing, truck (Chill Boy) being held up by gum poles while around ten passengers clamber over one another to offload a lounge suite stacked atop small appliances and bags of food, was not the comical bit. Just off camera, three traffic officers were facing a very real dilemma. They had arrived on scene and were readying to secure the area with bright orange traffic cones. One of them took up position on the centre line to direct traffic, while his two compatriots proceeded to offload the cones from their official vehicle. The cones were stacked atop one another – an ingenious transportation solution that would very soon prove the cause of a very real struggle. Two of these cones were stuck securely to each other and the traffic officials needed them separated. One grabbed hold of the bot-
tom cone, and his partner took up a firm grasp over the nose of the top cone. In unison the two began their tarmac tango. Back and forth they danced across the tarmac to the cacophony of car hooters, and onlooker snickers. As if upon instruction by some karmic conductor, the two cones divorced. The separation of their previously assumed eternal bond sent both officers flailing awkwardly to either side of the carriage way. One of the officers managed to avoid a head on collision with Chill Boy, while his partner regained his balance mere moments in time to avoid landing flat on his behind in oncoming traffic. There was a bit of underhanded laughter from the third official on the centre line and a giggle or two from Chill Boy’s passengers before everyone settled back into the problem at hand. And although it was a comical scene, it highlighted some very serious truths – many a true word said in jest after all. There are many issues captured in this image. The most serious of all is the overloading that
somehow went undetected right through route this truck took presumably from Louis Trichardt during the hours of Sunday evening. It is believed that they travelled at night to avoid law enforcement. With the already alarming death toll on the R528 through Georges Valley – which currently stands on 18 deaths just this year – it is extremely worrying that vehicles like the one in the image, was able to make it down 80 percent of the way undetected and without incident. It begs the question what would have happened had they made it all the way down the mountain and into Tzaneen? Law enforcement needs to step up their game and start focusing on the real issues such as the overloading of vehicles, people transporting their workers on the back of bakkies along Agatha Road and taxi drivers who continuously endanger the lives of road users and their passengers by not obeying the rules of the road. This could have had a gruesome alternate ending. Perhaps that is what it will take before duties are taken seriously. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

‘We have reached a point beyond Gatvol’ On Friday, the 5th of October one man took a stand against a broken system. Phalaborwa resident and Chair of the Rate Payers Association, George Hepburn is “gatvol”. For close on a month the town that he lives in has been without water during one of the hottest months of the year. Frequent power outages frame the crisis in darkness as students allegedly struggle to complete their homework assignments and primary school kids say they go to bed hungry. Last year Hepburn was joined by Manie Kriel, the president of the Phalaborwa Home Owners Association and together they garnered the support of the community and staged a march to the offices of the Mayor, Pule Shayi. There they handed over a memorandum with demands which included an end to the debilitating water crisis and frequent power cuts that is bringing the town to its knees. During this march, Mayor Shayi made promises to the community which included an effort to bring to an end the service delivery failures of his municipality. A year later and the situation repeats itself as once again Lepelle Northern Water Board throttles water supply to the resident as it awaits payment to be made by the Mopani District Municipality. Bulletin is in possession of a document that states that Mopani have made a payment to Lepelle to the amount of R20 million on the 5th of October in an effort to force the upliftment of the water restrictions. In this letter dated 9th of October, Lepelle responded by saying that it would not lift the water restrictions as the payment did not reflect the R40 million agreed upon in a meeting between the two parties.
FOLLOW UP
“Lepelle Northern Water will only consider your request to uplift the water supply restriction upon receipt of an additional payment of R10 million,” the letter signed by the Lepelle CFO, S.P Valoyi, stated. According to Hepburn the time for being patient is long gone. “We were patient last year when they said we should give them time to get rid of the debt and resolve the matter. We were patient even after that when they did not honour their agreements with us. This community has been patient since 2014 and we are now at a point where talking is not what we need.” He says that it is high time the municipal officials realize that they work for the ratepayers and the broader community and that those are the people who now demand answers. “They have ignored almost weekly letters and enquiries. The municipality ignored our pleads and our cries and so it seems that the only thing they actually understand is when a community takes action. So that is exactly what we are going to do come Saturday the 20th of October.”
Hepburn has gathered an even larger following of the residents across the entire Ba-Phalaborwa region and has now planned a protest march to the buildings of the municipality to demand immediate action. He has also written a scathing letter to the Municipal Manager of the BPM, Maite Moakamela, wherein he demanded that she be in attendance along with every other

George Hepburn has dedicated his time to collecting complaints from the residents which he will use to take on the municipality. These are 330 letters he received from primary school children describing how they suffer without water and electricity.
Water crisis update: BPM owes Mopani R180m
Phalaborwa was been without adequate water supply for more than three weeks. Lepelle Northern Water Board who supplies water to the town, has throttled the supply by 70 percent because the Mopani District Municipality (MDM) owes them millions in unpaid debt. The real culprits are, by all accounts however, the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality who currently owe the MDM R180 million for profits this municipality made off the income generated by the supply of water to ratepayers. This in turn has led to the MDM not being able to pay Lepelle. The situation can be better understood through an understanding of the system. Mopani District Municipality manages five local municipalities which include Ba-Phalaborwa, Greater Tzaneen, Greater Giyani, Greater Letaba and Maruleng. The District Municipality is the appointed Water Service Administrator for the region. Through agreements with its five local municipalities, the District appointed each of them to act as water service providers on its behalf. Lepelle Northern Water board provides the water to these municipalities. In laymen’s terms, Mopani District pays the accounts of the municipalities who then receive water from Lepelle Northern Water. The municipalities then invoice their ratepayers according
to their water usage (which is meant to be obtained from meter readings). These earnings are then tallied up and any profit made through the sale of the water has to be paid back to the district. In return, any losses made by the municipalities are compensated for by the district who then pay the municipalities. According to the MDM, who responded to an urgent enquiry by the DA Member of Parliament, Desiree van der Walt, the problem lies with the Ba-Phalaborwa municipality who have not honoured the agreement. This municipality allegedly has not paid over the R180 million it owes to Mopani for the profits it made off the sale of water to its ratepayers. Shockingly, the MDM admits that the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality has not honoured the agreement it signed with them. It also states that because of this municipality not honouring its debt, the MDM has not been able to fully honour its own debt to the other four municipalities who have been operating their water service at a loss. Currently the Mopani District Municipality owes Greater Tzaneen R179 million. It owes Greater Letaba Municipality R55 million, Greater Giyani R27.6 million and Maruleng a total of R23.4 million.
“The reported figures on outstanding debt are as at June 2017 and are reflected on the audited Annual Financial Statements of 2016/17 financial year. According to the municipality, the current and latest available debt amounts that are reported on the MFMA Section 71 reports are mostly disputed, incorrect, and unreliable and regarded as not a true reflection of the arrear debt,” according to the MDM’s written response. Even more shocking is the MDM’s admittance that the root causes of non- payment of debt was as a result of the various shortfalls in the Service Level Agreement (SLA) between the district and its locals, and the lack of implementation thereof. The District Municipality said that it is in the process of amending the SLA to improve the identified gaps. “Ba-Phalaborwa has signed and is honouring a payment agreement of R1.7 million with the District Municipality. The District uses the payment from the Local Municipality to repay its debt owed to the Water Board. The District is facilitating a process to write-off some of the outstanding debt of its local municipalities,” the statement said. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
Editor’s note: It is unbelievable, nay unfathomable, to think that the entire District can be held hostage by the actions of one small municipality. It should be considered a criminal act to allow, and then admit that one of your municipalities have not, and are still not honouring their written agreement. The fact that the MDM have not made mention of this rather blatant mismanagement of funds and have remained mum contrary to their mandate of transparency and good governance, shows that the system is a dismal failure. It shows that the rights and basic needs of communities fall far short on the political priority scale trumped by greed. We as a community demand an audited report into the financials of the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality and that those guilty of looting the coffers be prosecuted accordingly, or publically. This situation has been ongoing since it was first uncovered in 2014. Where has all that money gone when it is obviously not being used for the maintenance and providing of services in and around that municipality? Residents have to organize their own cleaning crews to keep their living areas clean because their municipality are too lax to care. Enough with the talking, ons is gatvol!

Illegal water connections disconnected A convoy of water trucks provided residents of Lenyenye with water over the weekend as a large contingent of Mopani District technicians accompanied by councillors from Lesedi descended into the township. Their goal was to remove illegal water connections which have been negatively affecting the supply of water to the township over the course of the last few months. The move followed complaints by community members of a lack in water pressure. It was later discovered that illegal connections to the mainline delivering water from the Thabine Water Treatment Works was at the heart of the problem. Mopani District Municipality had just completed the Thabine Bulk Water Reticulation plant at a cost of R28 million, but could not supply residents with water due to illegal connections. The Thabine Water Reticulation Project commenced three years ago and was completed in 2017 but water was supplied to the affected residents for only a few weeks. The recent attempt by the authorities is expected to bring relief to the local residents who were threatening to protest about the shortage of water in the area. In a statement, spokesperson for Mo-
pani, Witness Tiva, said that the district municipality`s technical services were continuing with its massive operation of patching water leaks on the main line which is abstracting water from Thabina to Lenyenye township. The effort is aimed at ensuring that the local reservoir is filled to capacity and supplies the whole township with water. — Jan Mafetsa Editor’s note: It is shocking that so many residents are forced to live without a basic need such as water. The ANC promised all these people water and electricity and the masses believed them and voted them into power. It has been 24 years and still most of these people have not yet seen a better tomorrow. But the politicians will continue to blame their own failures on the previous regime. Will giving these people land magically make water appear in their faucets? And where is the Democratic Alliance and the EFF in this mess? Do they honestly believe that we as their potential voters are blind enough not to notice that all their noise comes only at election time? These problems did not start a week ago, it started a decade ago. Where was the opposition then?
ANC to protest Lenyenye water crisis The divisions within the ANC, born out of lobbying for the recent Nasrec National Conference, have not yet healed and the Bornfire Maponya Branch Executive Committee (BEC) now plots to stage a protest at the offices of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) to force the hand of the mayor, Maripe Mangena, to intervene in the historical Lenyenye water crisis. This emerged on Sunday when the Mopani District Municipality (MDM) dispatched technicians to the township to solve the water crisis which has plagued the community for more than five years. The technicians were instructed to find and close all illegal connections off the main water pipeline from the Thabine purification plant to Lenyenye. The villages to be targeted were Mokomotji, Mosorong, Mapolankeng and Moime. In a statement, branch spokesperson, Maro-
peng Mohale, said that as a branch of the ANC, they feel aggrieved and disappointed and have lost patience with the failure of the municipality to resolve the water supply crisis affecting their community. Several discussion forums to resolve the matter were arranged with previous political heads and previous technical staff but to date no solution had been provided. “We recently held meetings with politicians and their technical staff and it was agreed that we should meet on a weekly basis to monitor the improvements and to identify and fix illegal water connections. These illegal connections are the main source of water shortages in the area. It was also agreed that there be the provision of water through water tankers while a permanent solution would be sought and always alert the community about the developments.” Mohale added that the fact that there was the
establishment of the task team, does not mean that they were happy with the status quo. To display their absolute disdain and to show that they have reached the end of their tether, the BEC are planning a “Mass Action” in the form of a disciplined march to the offices of the GTM. They will inform their members and the community on the logistics for the protest to take place “as soon as possible.” The move by the ruling party in the area has left some in the community unhappy with the development saying it displays how divisions and in fighting has managed to keep the communities from uniting as one. It is seen in some quarters as attempts by would-be councillors for 2021 to pave their way to greener pastures despite being a part of the problems they want to protest over. The noise by the ANC is regarded as an at-
tempt to show the community that they are a part of the water crisis resolutions in the townships, despite these problems having been ongoing for many years. It all began in January when the meeting for the Integrated Development Programme (IDP) was disrupted by the community demanding the presence of the Mayor. Since then, community meetings were hard to hold. In Lenyenye and the other areas the municipality could not hold the workshops to discuss the IDP due to disruptions caused by ANC members who acted as opposition parties so that fingers could be pointed to the wrong people. However the GTM approved R90 million to provide residents with water and another R90 million for the sewer project which is in its construction phase. — Jan Mafetsa
Love Life help uplift community Hundreds of youth of school going age converged at the Mamphela precinct in Lenyenye to attend the annual Miss and Mr Love Life Beauty Pageant last Friday as part of getting the youths off the streets through entertainment and recreational activities. day on Saturday at the centre. It all began with the boys strutting their stuff so to speak, upon a makeshift stage which was followed by girls doing their turns on the catwalk. Thereafter the boys hit the stage again, this time to tell the audience about themselves in front of the judges. The contestants were recruited from the high schools in the Thabina circuit and the youngest was a twelve year old from Thabeng Primary School. The event was spiced up with entertainment from the dancers from the township. Ambassador for Love Life in Mopani, Fumayo Mabitsela said that judges were fished from the area to alleviate complaints which may emerge after the announcements of the results. He added that the event was followed with graduations where students who were taught for free at the
centre were awarded certificates. Mabitsela, who is a youth community builder in the township, said the activities for this third school break started with debates by various schools on Heritage day on various topics ranging from, education, culture, technology and the winners were given awards for their performances. Among the schools whose children participated included Matimu, Thabeng, Phusela, Pherehla Maake, Mathlarhi, Seboye, Sekaba and many others. — Jan Mafetsa

837 days that forced the change You can tell a lot about a man by the look in his eyes. Wynand du Toit looks right through you in a deceptively gentle manner. You would never suspect that the ‘oom’ sitting across from you at the dinner table, quietly sipping his drink, was the most famous prisoner of war in South African military history. He was captured by FAPLA forces in Angola during a special operations mission in 1985. Du Toit commanded a team of six Recce operators who were tasked to enter enemy territory at night in order to blow up a strategic oil reserve. At daybreak however, his team hit contact with 120 FAPLA soldiers. A skirmish ensued which
lasted for 45 minutes and saw Du Toit wounded and captured. His team managed to regroup and made their way to safety. Two of the Recce’s were wounded in the fight. Du Toit was subsequently interrogated before being placed into solitary confinement for 837 days as Cuban soldiers guarded the entrance to his cell. On Saturday evening guests filled the tables in the function hall of Hotel@Tzaneen to hang on every word of the former Recce commander as he indulged his audience with titbits of the tale that has produced five novels since his release in 1987. The Message
Granny’s Grumbles - Men are from Mars...
Most people have either read or heard of the book “Men are from Mars, Women from Venus”. The author John Grey grew up as one of five brothers, but in spite of that (or maybe because of it) he soon worked out the vast differences in the way that men and women think (and act)! One of the most interesting lines from his book is “women need to be loved and cherished and men want to feel needed”. It is a sad fact of life that since the advent of the sixties and Germaine Greer writing “The Female Eunuch” many women appear to have lost the plot. Some twenty years ago, women suddenly became managers in various aspects of the mining world and although many of them had all the qualifications necessary for the job, many had obviously never read the book. As a lowly secretary watching them in action I got the sinking feeling that my own sex was letting me down badly. As a manager you are supposed to manage people not necessarily get down on your hands and knees
to show them you are better at their job. Without exception nearly all of these newly qualified female engineers were trying to outdo their male counterparts, some of whom were nearly twice their age and in doing so they were doing little to endear themselves to their male counterparts. During this period, my boss received notification that a female drill and blast engineer would be arriving from Australia and spending a week at the mine to see how things were done in our drill and blast section. I was asked to organise a programme that would give her a couple of hours with each man involved in that particular section starting with the General Foreman of the Drill and Blast Section. He had been at the mine for 35 years and did not suffer any engineers gladly. When I asked him to make himself available on Monday morning and spend two hours showing her around, he merely grunted and walked out. Most of us have preconceived ideas of certain things (or people). Obviously every male in the division already had visions of an Australian drill and blast female engineer and I was having a hard time trying to get any form of programme sorted out. It turned out that my boss was feeling the same way about her arrival and I suddenly discovered that not only was I expected to pick her up from the airport on the Sunday afternoon but I was also having her stay with me. When the plane arrived I stood waiting for what I anticipated would be a hefty, tough-looking female possibly sporting a couple of large tattoos. Only one female emerged – a tiny little blonde with a ponytail. The only large thing about her was the rucksack she was lugging around! After spending the evening with her I realised that not only did she look delightful, she really was. However, I knew the crunch would be old Jan – the general foreman – he was grumpy at the best of times. Monday morning – after two cups of coffee
in my office – Jan had still not arrived to pick Kim up. I was running out of excuses for his non- arrival and eventually went down to the operations centre and asked somebody to get him on the radio. When he was given the message I heard him saying that he had better things to do on a Monday morning than ”baby-sit a bloody female from Australia”. When he eventually arrived at the office (more than an hour late) looking like thunder I anticipated the worst, but this young lady had obviously read THE BOOK. Before I could even make the introduction, she walked up to him, put out her hand, apologised for messing up his morning and told him that she had heard so much about him – he was a legend within the drill and blast community. Jan was slightly mollified and off they went together. At lunch-time they still weren’t back and I was getting distinctly uneasy. When Jan eventually brought her back – four hours late – it transpired that not only had he given her the grand tour but had taken her to lunch and then off to do some game viewing. Nobody could believe it – she had Jan eating out of her hand and sharing all his blasting secrets with her. Not only that – most of the men she came into contact with were taken by her – it didn’t matter how low down the ladder they were, she took notes and always looked interested. What a woman! Only 23 years of age and I should think that by now she is probably managing a mine and having the men fighting to work for her. She made every man feel like she really needed him. So…. all you young ladies who think that you should be as good or better than a man, you are messing it up for the rest of us who actually like a man to do the dirty work. Yes, I can change a tyre, change a light bulb, clean the pool and a myriad of other jobs that are usually done by men and I do them when my husband is away or not well. However, I am not so desperate to do them that I want to be landed with them forever. Apart from anything else who wants to ruin a man’s self-esteem??

Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church Being your own person in today’s world is not always easy, people tend to expect you to be perfect in whatever you do. Unfortunately, you can only be as good as they allow you to be. It does not matter in what profession you are in or what type of work you do, perfection is sought. You may be the most learned person, knowing the finer details of your chosen profession, but you also need practical training. Hands on training before you can actually say you know what you are capable of. This is also what is needed as far as religion is concerned. It is no good just reading the Scriptures or religious books, although this is one of the steps to gaining insight to religion. God gave us the freedom of choice, therefore, we can choose which ever religious group we think will suit us. It maybe the religion our parents follow or perhaps some other religion. But, we need to be careful not to get involved in something we do not fully understand by being influenced by the world or some preacher. Remember, not one preacher has all the answers. We need to be fully trained by questioning if the truth is what is being preached. The Bible is the source we can go to if we are following the Christian faith, referring to the Scriptures we can seek the truth. However, if you are true Christian you too will be expected to excel and often be criticized for your beliefs, being your own person is often not expected of you, you are expected to be some sort of angel or the other. People judge you for your actions and often say “there goes the so called Christian” especially if you have been observed when you let your hair down. Being human is often not seen to be Christian. Jesus suffered the same treatment, but He rose above it all and never judged others. He knew the truth about all of them and He forgave them, even on the cross. We need to be our own person, to believe in the truth and to try not to judge others, this is what is expected of a true Christian. Are you a true Christian? Blessings

Counteracting stress and trauma in communities Sixteen ‘Nompilos’ (community health workers), peer educators, home-based carers and community workers from the Hoedspruit, Phalaborwa and Tzaneen areas were trained as TRE Community facilitators. TRE (Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises) is a method to help release tension stored in the body due to stress, anxiety, trauma. TRE can be used in crises and after accidents as emergency interventions but is mainly taught as a self-help tool with the aim of bringing the body and mind back into balance, thereby improving overall health. Over a period of 6 months Dr. Erika Coertzen, a doctor of integrative medicine from Tzaneen, trained participants, culminating in a graduation celebration on 4 October 2018 at Hlokomela. It has long been Dr. Erika Coertzen’s dream to spread TRE to the rural communities where people have little access to mental health facilities. In a pilot project, Hlokomela in Hoedspruit hosted 8 training days where participants, selected by three NGO’s, learnt how the body re-
sponds to stress and trauma and how to alleviate the symptoms. These 3 NGO’s, Hlokomela, CHoiCe Trust and Anova Health Institute, have been working with TRE for a number of years and have seen such positive results that they decided to support this project. Funding was, as always, a difficulty and the costs the NGO’s could not cover were raised through private and corporate sponsoring. The participants soon felt the benefits of TRE on their own bodies and thoroughly enjoyed the course days. There was a wonderful sense of connection in the group and attendance was almost perfect. The feedback has been astonishing as most participants reported improvements in sleep, anxiety, irritability, digestion, aches and pains and energy levels after 6 months of practicing TRE. Equipped with donated yoga mats and blankets these new TRE Community Facilitators will go out and facilitate TRE with people who’ve experienced some form of trauma and teach it to as many people as possible as a self-help tool
to support them in coping with their life circumstances. The pilot was a resounding success and the course will be repeated next year, spreading TRE further in our communities to counteract the effects of trauma and stress, improving the mental and physical health of the population. Steampunk hits the Mall John Knott (35) from Haenertsburg opened his new restaurant/bowling alley after six months hard work in March this year. Situated at Entrance Three of the Savannah Mall in Polokwane, the restaurant called Tenpin on Grimm, is the most fascinating Steampunk theme ever created. The eye catching Steampunk items were fashioned by John and all parts were garnered from unused bits and
pieces from the family farm in Munnik. John is known for his exceptional woodwork and his products grace both Viewpoint and The Eatery in Haenertsburg, Steampunk, a mixture of Victorian and fantasy, before it became the fullblown sub-culture it is today, started out as a science-fiction sub-genre in the 1970’s. Its fundamental inspirations go all the way back to 19th century Victori-
an writers, such as Jules Verne (author of 20,000 Leagues under the Sea) and H.G. Wells (author of The Time Machine). The term Steampunk was first coined in 1987 by K. W. Jeter, the author of the novel ‘Morlock Night’. He used the term to describe a genre of speculative fiction in which steam, not electricity, drove technological advancements. Since then it has been used to describe an artistic and cultural movement. John went to Capricorn High in Polokwane and then studied Information Technology at the University of Pretoria. He moved to Cape Town for several years where he honed his wood skills as a designer in a wood working factory. John Knott hops onto a counter to pose with Jeffrey. John made all the furniture and Steampunk decorations himself. There’s Jeffrey the Octopus made out of old Mercedes Benz parts. There are large wheels, steel borehole pipes form the legs for the tables, and the ladies toilet doors, both outside and inside, follow the Steampunk theme. Tenpin on Grimm has a staff of 20. Carl Lechner, who John met during his Farmyard The ladies toilet door days outside Polokwane, Some of the delicious food dishes at Tenpin on Grimm. viewed from the inside.

developed the menu and hired the kitchen staff. The food follows the theme and there’s a Grim Reaper range of dishes. There’s the 1.4kg steak, the pizza with extra chillies, the double sized burger. John supports local in that he serves the Zwakala range of beers and the Zwakala gin from Luca Tooley’s family farm outside Haenertsburg. The coffee is from Truth Coffee in Cape Town. The bowling alley has league bowling on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 18:00 to 21:00. There are four players in a team. John’s tried to get a Haenertsburg team together but
the excuses are many and varied. His events coordinator, Lydia Marais, has a background of restaurant events and previously worked for franchises. So far she’s organised teambuilding for the end of the year, two fashion shows and bowls for Pathways School, a Polokwane based school for handicapped children. Work is ongoing and the outside verandah is being turned into a Zeppelin. The childrens’ area is also being tackled. Should you wish to see this fantasy world and eat the more than generous food portions, take yourself off to Tenpin on Grimm. Trading hours are daily from 08:00 to 21:00.

GTM Mayor takes his first swing The fifth annual Agricultural Expo hosted by the Greater Tzaneen Municipality came to another exciting heads with the Mayoral Charity Golf Day held on Friday. The event is hosted by the GTM Mayor, Cllr Maripe Mangena and is seen as a way to increase networking among the various stakeholders within the agricultural community and a fitting way to round of the expo. The Agri Expo was born out of the Land Reform and Forestry Summit which the municipality hosted in 2013. In 2014 GTM staged its inaugural Agricultural Expo which recorded 1 000 attendees and 52 exhibitors over a three day period. The Agri Expo was initially coordinated through an events management com-
pany in 2014 but in 2015 the municipality coordinated the event internally through an Events Coordinating committee. This year’s event saw an increase in the attendees as reported in our AgriBulletin last week where we focused on the Agri Expo Gala dinner held at Sima Silver Lodge as a precursor to the Golf Day. The format for this charity event was a Betterball and pitted teams from across the region against one another under the blistering sun. Mayor Maripe Mangena graced the event with a tee shot in front of the clubhouse to officially open the tournament. “I was a little nervous for the tee shot, but had some good coaching and encouragement beforehand,” he chuckled,
“and it would appear that by all accounts my drive was straight and true!” It was the first time Mangena had swung a golf club and a moment that seemed to have urged him on into signing up for some regular golf lessons with the regular pro at Fairview Hotel. Although the day was a charity event, there had to be winners when the dust had finally settled. It was the duo of Matsobane and Makena that took top spot on 50 points with Rasebotsa and Mokoena hot on their trail in second place with 49 points. Nathi “U-Nys” Sedibe and his partner Mafa, took third spot after a troublesome
time on the fifth with 48 points. — Joe Dreyer

Don’t fear the water, tread it
Local swimming club, Shamu, under the guidance of their coaching staff and through the help of some of their senior swimmers, hosted a water safety awareness clinic in Gravelotte
on the 28th of September. The clinic was hosted in the pool at the Gravelotte Primary School and saw a great number of the local students attend. A large number of
these young children had never been near a large body of water and were thus pertrified of the pool. Through the encouragement of the senior swimmers, they overcame their
fears and by the end of the session had learnt the basics of surviving in the water. Nanki Hoaeane and Johan Grobbelaar, head coaches of Shamu have pledged to continue the assis-

— Jeff Jackson

Seen here with Springbok Rugby Coach, Rassie Erasmus are Neil Haarhoff, Steve Willson and Thyron Pietersen. The 2018 Stanford Lake College Head Boy, Christian Schmidt, who also captained the team, was awarded the Best Sportsmanship Award for the second year running.
