Thousands of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) members from all regions of Limpopo converged at the Tzaneen Showgrounds on Tuesday morning. Moments later the massive wave of placard-brandishing, struggle song-singing workers painted the streets of Tzaneen red on their way to the offices of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality where a letter of demand was to be handed to the Mayor, Maripe Mangena. The event was attended by, among others, the leadership of all the unions affiliated to COSATU which included the South African Democratic Teacher Union, National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU), South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU) and hundreds of contract workers who were demanding to be reinstated by the municipality. Their primary demand was the abolition of tenders and the outsourcing of government services as well as the reinstatement of 74 contract workers who were laid off after the appoint-

ment of a new contractor to clean the streets of Tzaneen’s CBD. The new contractor decided to hire new people with reduced salaries equal to the money paid to workers contracted to the Empowered Public Works programme (EPWP). The programme for the day began just after ten with the procession leaving the show grounds to the Civic Centre through the CBD along Agatha Street. Police kept a watchful eye on the proceedings and traffic officials ensured that traffic flow was not too badly affected. The speaker of the day was COSATU Deputy President, Solly Phetoe. The ANC was represented by its secretary, Soviet Lekganyane, who hit hard at municipal bosses who had seen nothing wrong with investing municipal funds with the now defunct Venda Building Society (VBS). SAMWU provincial and regional secretaries Sello Aphane and Silllo Mononela were also in attendance while Mayor Maripe Mangena received the memorandum. According to SAMWU provincial secretary, Gerald Thwala, the event coincided with the tenth anniversary of the World Day for Decent

Venda king to pay back VBS money The paramount chief of the Vavhenda tribe and the former chairperson of the now defunct Venda Building Society (VBS), King Tony Ramabulana, has offered to return the money that was forwarded to him as gifts by the bank. This at the time the top six and the national committee ordered the Limpopo PEC that those implicated in the VBS matter should have action taken against them. This latest revelation follows the release and the publication of the report compiled by Advocate Terry Motau on behalf of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) detailing how

about R1,8 million disappeared from the bank after it was allegedly looted, by its own executives. The report recommended that 53 individuals, of which two members of the Provincial Executive Committee, Florence Radzilani and Treasurer, Danny Msiza, be criminally charged. Spokesperson for the king, Makondo Mathivha, said that the king would sit down with the affected parties to ascertain how much he might be liable to pay and there after pay the money. “What is at issue now is that there was corrup-

The report implicated Limpopo deputy chairperson and Mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM), Florence Radzilana, whose municipality had invested the sum of R300 million with VBS. Provincial ANC Treasurer, Danny Msiza, was labelled the “influencer and fixer” after he allegedly bribed senior municipal officials to invest with the bank. The municipalities which, against the advice of the Treasury, invested with the bank are Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) - R300m, Fetakgomo Local- R230, Giyani Local - R153, Lepelle Nkumpi- R150m, Collins Chabane - R120, Elias Motswaledi - R100, Polokwane R80m, Makhado - R60m, and Makhuduthamaga - R30m. Work (WDDW) which is celebrated every October throughout the world. Thwala, said according to the World Labour Organisation (WLO), decent work involves productive job opportunities, fair income, job security, and the protection of families. He added that ‘decent work’ means the social protection of families, better prospects for personal development and social integration, as well as freedom of speech in the work place in order to express their concerns and the right to organise and participate in the decisions that affect their lives. According to him, COSATU believes that decent work entails bringing back the economy that put the people first including women and children. -Jan Mafetsa

vested because of the nature of the loan. Last week about a 100 workers employed by the bank were ordered to sign retrenchment letters which they refused to sign allegedly because the packages offered to them was too little. However COSATU resolved that they are going to hold protests in front of the bank to ensure that the jobs that are to be shed are saved. The organisation is organising protests in municipalities which had invested money with the bank The report further alleged that the brother of EFF Deputy, Floyd Shivambu, a Mr Brian Shivambu, received about R16 million from the bank which was channelled to the EFF through his brother and the ordinary members. Further media reports revealed that Floyd Shivambu received R10 million while the fighters were given R1, 3 million. These are allegations which were denied. -Jan Mafetsa

Danish woman investigated for fraud Phalaborwa has made the news again this week, but this time on an international platform. According to various Danish news outlets, a 64-year old employee of the Danish Ministry of Social Affairs, Anna Britta Troelsgaard Nielsen, is sought by Interpol for allegedly scamming the Danish government agency of more than 111 Danish kroner (R244 424 073). Danish authorities believe that Nielsen managed this by making more than 274 payments between 2002 and 2018 into her own bank accounts. The money was earmarked for vulnerable citizens according to the Danish media outlet, BT. According to investigations conducted by Ekstra Bladet (a Danish news outlet), Nielsen owns property worth millions in South Africa. The television news agency TV2 paid a visit to Phalaborwa this week where the fraud-suspect owns several properties. They spoke to Manie Kriel, a property agent from that town who

recalled having met with Nielsen in his office. In an interview with TV2, Kriel explained that he could clearly remember the day in 2010, when he first met the Danish woman. He said that he remembered that she had a lot of money. When he asked her where the money came from, she explained that she had inherited the money after the death of her husband who had apparently owned a number of oil platforms. According to Kriel, Nielsen was interested in purchasing two large properties in the area of Selonqwe on the outskirts of Phalaborwa, which she would eventually develop into a wildlife estate with a sanctuary and a resort. The development would be known as Thula Bush Estate. The first property she purchased from Kriel was at a cost of R1.6 million which she immediately paid for by going to the bank and transferring the funds. A year later she purchased the Thula Lodge in the same area for R1.32 million, and again made an immediate payment. The fact that Nielsen was so eager to make payment and not interested in reading through the documentation aroused Kriel’s suspicions. Nevertheless, the Dane proceeded with the purchases and subsequent marketing of the planned estate and soon had roped in around six buyers who all purchased stands in the estate. To date however, no development as per her extensive advertisements had been started nor are

there any wildlife roaming the grounds, barring a few crocodiles in a fenced off encampment. In the sales material for Thula Bush Estate, Anna Britta Troelsgaard Nielsen’s affiliates promised that it was an exclusive area in the South African bushveld which featured luxurious homes and even boasted that the estate housed a restaurant serving upmarket food in scenic surroundings. There is however, no restaurant, and no wildlife sanctuary and by the looks of it no plans for either. At the time of going to print this week, it was not certain where Anna Britta Troelsgaard Nielsen currently resides after she allegedly fled back to Europe a short while ago. At the start of October she was declared bankrupt following the allegations, and authorities have seized property in both Denmark and Sweden and a small sum of money has reportedly been recovered too. This has been described as the biggest fraud case in Denmark’s history and has received even more public interest after it became known that the alleged fraudster had worked at the welfare ministry for more than 40 years. She was awarded a medal for her service from Queen Margrethe II. At the time opf going to print no further information had been made available and the investigations continue globally. — Joe Dreyer, joe@bulletin.us.com

The Letaba River which dissects Letsitele is still overgrown with the invasive Hyacinth free floating aquatic plant. Despite many attempts in the past to rid the river of this pest it would appear that the plants are not going anywhere soon. In September last year, local crop sprayers Sandriver Crop Protection acted upon instruction by the Department of Water Affairs and sent one of their pilots, JD Heyns in his specially adapted Bell 206 Long Ranger, to spray the plants over the river with the chemical Seismic Glutaphosphate. The attempt seemed to have worked as some of the plants appeared to perish two weeks after the aerial assault, but soon they blossomed again and even appears to have multiplied. This week, quite coincidentally while visiting the management team of the Junction on the banks of the Letaba, Bulletin noticed a helicopter flying low over the river’s surface. Sure enough, the pilot was spraying a chemical which resembled Seismic Glutaphosphate in odour, over the Hyacinth infested waters. It was not Sandriver Crop this time however, and upon investigation it was discovered that the pilot was Fritz Lightner, a well-known pilot often employed by the Department of Water Affairs to conduct exactly these types of runs. We tried in vain to contact the pilot before going to print in order to find out more on this latest attempt, but he could not be reached. Similarly too, the departmental spokesperson. We did however receive commentary on the issue from Frederick Pohl, the DA councillor from the area, who is of the opinion that the approach to the matter is at fault. According to him it has been proven that spraying the plants will not be a long term solution. He referenced

the Nahoon River project which he is currently involved in. “To spray the hyacinth is a temporary solution that actually has a negative impact on the water quality. There is a biological solution that is actually working in the Nahoon River. There is a weevil available that feeds on the hyacinth.

It is a long term solution that requires constant monitoring and breeding of the insects,” Pohl explained. “This needs a commitment from water users to make it a success. Rhodes University bred the weevil and is monitoring the Nahoon River. Spraying is bad because the plants die and

Duke of the Kloof now ANC: ‘Heads will roll’ Finance Minister The self-proclaimed “Duke of Magoebaskloof” Tito Mboweni, has been appointed the new Minister of Finance last week after the resignation of the Hlanhla Nene who was implicated in the controversial state capture saga. Mboweni was by then on pension in the wilderness of the Makgoebaskloof hills after been in government for many years where he served as the Reserve Bank governor. Mboweni who was born at Bodweni village at Julesburg, about fifty kilometers South East of Tzaneen, served as the first black governor of the reserve bank from 1998 to 2002. Mboweni once addressed the fund raising dinner of the Tzaneen Business Chamber and is a well-known figure in Tzaneen business community. Since retirement he is known for his Twitter and Facebook photo posting of meals, wild landscapes of the Kloof, and the livestock he dearly loves. He once posted “The farmer in the Duchy of Makgoebaskloof! The Duke himself” He posted photos of sweat dripping down his face. In March he tweeted “the deed is done! Cleaned out. Nice. And by the way, the Lucky star zero rated. Thank you National Treasury for thinking about us pensioners.” He was referring the Pilchards canned fish he so dearly loves. One of the more spicy social media moments was in May 2015 when he bemoaned the fact that he had not been allowed to skip a line at OR Tambo international airport

where he was to board a flight. “Today I was booted out of the VIP security checkpoint. No longer allowed. Reason. Unapproved person. Wow. Been using this since 1994 and when you retire from public service you become an unapproved person. So much for dedication for so many years to country and the people. Thanks.” In April this year he tweeted something that left members of the ruling party accusing him of supporting the policies of the EFF. “Dear God open the eyes and ears of our leaders. Let them do four things. The state must own 40 percent of the mining companies. Start a state bank. Implement appropriate land use planning programmes and create a sovereign wealth fund.” Mboweni, obtained a Bachelor of Arts (honours equivalent) degree in Economics and political Science from the National University of Lesotho in 1985. In 1987 he obtained a Master of Arts degree in Development Economics from the University of East Anglia in England. Mr. Mboweni was Minister of Labour from May 1994 to July 1998 in President Nelson Mandela’s cabinet. Prior to his appointment as Minister of Labour, Mr. Mboweni was Deputy Head of the Department of Economic Policy in the ANC. He also represented the ANC on several domestic and international platforms. Prior to 1999, he paid a visit to the ZZ2 tomato giant to solve work related issues which resulted in proper houses for the workers at the farm. After his appointment, the Rand improved from a slump and the credit rating agencies postponed the ratings of South Africa until after the elections. He will be in parliament next week for budget matters -Jan Mafetsa

The Top Six and the National Working Committee of the ANC in Lithuli House ordered Limpopo Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) to take action against its members implicated in the report on the Venda Building Society saga. This call came after the Alliance partners called for action to be taken against the provincial deputy chairperson, Florence Radzilana, and the Treasurer, Danny Msiza after being implicated in the report. Prior to the meeting which took place on Monday, Limpopo premier Stan Mathabatha said that they were going to meet during the weekend as the PEC and deliberate on the way forward before they could meet the top leadership of the ANC. The comment was supplanted by an address by President Cyril Ramaphosa in Kwazulu Natal wherein he stated that “the

crooks who looted VBS should be sent to jail to face the music.” This follows an explosive report issued by Advocate Terry Motau, detailing that 53 individuals and companies should be charged after the bank was looted to the tune of R 2 billion. The report also recommended that the assets of the implicated people be seized and sold to recover the money that was stolen. Limpopo Mkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association chairperson, Joshua Marhule, was the first to appeal to the ANC in the province to take action against one of their own. He said they will report the matter to the Lithuli House for action to be taken, and if that is not the case they will open criminal charges against the implicated members. -Jan Mafetsa

SADU wishes matrics well The largest teacher trade union, the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) has wished the 796 542 candidates who are writing the National Senior Certificate examinations the best of luck. The exams started this week Monday when 37 340 candidates were writing their practical examinations in Computer Technology. The union also commended its teachers and members for preparing children well for the examinations. In a statement released on Monday the union said SADTU commends the teachers in general for performing their revolutionary tasks in prepar-

ing learners for the examinations and, at times sacrificing their weekends and holidays. These sacrifices should be commended.” It further said that the National Senior Certificate (NSC) is the most crucial in any learner`s life and it is an indicator of success of the primary and secondary school system and a gateway to further studying. “The quality of the marks open more avenues for better tertiary qualifications one can study for. And teachers should be commended for caring for the learners and to help them realise their maximum potential.”

This comes in the wake of visit by the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga to Ga- Kgapane in the Greater Letaba Municipality (GLM) to motivate the learners prior to their sitting for the exams. In Lenyenye two circuits Bokgaga and Khujwana converged at the community hall for matric motivational talks last week. Addressing matriculants for Bokgaga circuit, Mopani former municipal manager, Timothy Maake said learners should know what they are going to study at university while it is still time so they are not confused when the time would be ripe.

reliable service provider and approached KSB Pumps and Valves to procure three KSB ETA20040 pumps to meet and exceed the requirements of the tender. These not only perform brilliantly as pumps, but in turbine mode have a better than 80% efficiency even considering hydraulic and electrical losses. This speaks volumes for the overall efficiency and design of the pumps,” says Kiewiet.

A technical team serving the requirements of the Drakenstein Municipality in the Western Cape has designed one of the country’s largest pump and turbine stations to be used for water reticulation to the nearby town of Paarl in dry periods, and as turbines to generate electricity for the city during the remainder of the year. The City’s engineer for water operations, Hein Henning, says the city was faced with the dilemma of having to pump water to its neighbour for just one month a year. For the rest of the year the pump station would be dormant and need hundreds of thousands of Rands maintenance due to possible corrosion, perishing, lubrication and bearing damage to the idle infrastructure. Instead, the progressive municipality chose to innovate and rather generate an income while simultaneously reducing the requirement for maintenance by effectively allowing the pumps to run backwards against the pressure of water from its elevated Leliefontein reservoir and generate electricity for the region’s electrical grid.

Technology integration Electrical systems integrator, Brian Cooper, of Hidro-Tech systems PTY (LTD), says despite the relative simplicity of the mechanical design, it does require complex integration of controls to deal with the hydraulic force and convert the electricity generated into a useable form. This required pump speeds to be controlled via a variable speed drive to prevent overspeed as well as convert the KSB Pumps and Valves’ branches and dealer manager for South Africa, Francois Naude with regional sales manager (Sub-Sahara Africa), David Jones wave produced to a pure 50hz wave form that is compatible with the city’s power grid. ture with a 40-year lifespan. “Thereafter the system is designed with full PLC “With this long lifespan in mind, we decided to make use of control which can be managed on site via Human Machine InKSB pumps as we already have a number of these installed terface (HMI) or can be accessed remotely via computer or a moGenerating power throughout our municipality and are aware of their reliability, bile device to give users infinite control and monitoring of the The commissioning of the pump and turbine station (PaT) efas well as long track record of support to our municipality, as site wherever and whenever required. For one month of the year during the driest month the pumps need to be switched on to pump 400 litres per second upstream to Paarl where after the pumps would usually be switched off. “However, the higher elevation of the reservoir allows us to rotate the pumps backwards to act as small turbines for the rest of the year which is able to generate electricity at more than an 80% efficiency. Unlike turbines however, the pumps are standard stock items from the supplier, KSB Pumps and Valves and does not require specialised support and servicing. What’s more, the pumps are durable enough to allow us to design the infrastruc-

out its requirement to replace its existing 96 litre-per-second pump station with a new one and discussed the ability to generate electricity in the off season with consulting engineers, Aurecon. Having designed and planned a solution, the main contract was awarded to Hidro -Tech systems (PTY) Ltd for mechanical and electrical work. Kiewiet Viljoen, projects director for Hidro-Tech systems (PTY) Ltd, said the primary role of the project was to develop an efficient and reliable booster pump station to ensure uninterrupted water supply to nearby Wellington. Only once that need had been fully met could the project managers consider its secondary role to generate power in off-peak season. “We therefore knew we needed a technologically savvy and

Project success Following the commissioning of the pump station and turbines the system has begun operating at full capacity and the Drakenstein municipality has started reaping the rewards of its forward-looking water management systems. “We are pleased with the outcome and commend everybody involved in the project for their innovation and dedication to building a system that can be used as a blueprint by other municipalities around the country and across the globe. It has been a brilliant project with lots of challenges and innovation and the end result being the delivery of a successful project. We will definitely do similar projects with this team in future,” concludes Hein.

The Message

Granny’s Grumbles - First Love

My eldest son had only just started school and was midway through his first term when my husband announced we were moving to Chirundu. The nearest school was in Karoi which was 100 miles away and since Carl was only five years of age he was too young to be considered as a boarder. The only alternative was home schooling with the assistance of “School on the Air” which was a radio programme that was broadcast daily for a couple of hours. Just remember – no computers or TV programmes for this kind of thing. I was sent school lessons via post and the only assistance I got was also via post. Sounds

almost archaic doesn’t it? It only took a week to realise this was not going to be a happy situation for either Carl or myself. It hardly mattered what I did – I was told that his REAL school teacher had not done it that way. Also his brother (who was just 12 months younger) wandered in and out with younger sister in tow. They both thought they were missing out on something interesting and wanted to be part of it. Little did they know that Carl spent his time looking longingly out of the window wishing he could be with them? In a nutshell I was not a good teacher – possibly if I had started at the beginning of the year things would have been different but I obviously came a very poor second to a REAL teacher. At the end of the year we left Chirundu and relocated to Karoi. I couldn’t wait to book both of my boys into the primary school and suggested to the principal they go into the same class since Carl’s first year of schooling had been anything but successful. The principal disagreed – he did not believe that brothers of differing ages should be in the same class. And so Carl went into what was in those days KG2 and I soon realised that it wasn’t only me that had been the problem – Carl disliked his new teacher and hated school. By the end of the year I felt pretty despondent and once again suggested that Carl be held back a year. The principal still disagreed and pointed out that Carl had not actually come last in class – only third last. On the first day of school I was introduced to

his new teacher – straight out of training college – mini-skirted and beautiful. My heart sank – did she know what she was in for? Had she had any experience with a young boy who just hated school? I explained the whole saga to her and she insisted that she and Carl would sort it out. To be honest I doubted it, but by the end of a fortnight it was patently obvious that Carl was desperately in love with Miss Derby (for that was her name). Each night at dinner we heard exactly what she had worn that day and what colour ribbon she had worn in her hair. She had written in the margin of his exercise book “This is much better Carl - I knew you could do it” A couple of kisses at the bottom of the message had him floating on air. This exercise book was actually read and re-read like a love-letter. A few months into the term he took part in an amateur boxing tournament and won a trophy which he insisted upon taking to school to show Miss Derby. She waited until mid-morning then made an announcement to the class that there was a champion in their midst and held up the trophy. My son was already besotted by his teacher but I think that was the cherry on the top, and I was awestruck that a girl (she was only 19) could get such a reaction from him. During the first school holidays in her class he arrived home with three reading books – he announced that he was going to be able to read these books by the time he returned to school because that was what Miss Derby wanted from him. By the end of the year he was up to speed with the rest of the class and I realised that Miss Derby was a very smart young lady.

Net Jesus was sonder foute.

Local guitarist invited to Kenya Earlier this year, Haenertsburg heavy metallist, Tamla Kahn McMahon (23), played at a music festival in Angola. There she and Robyn Ferguson, who are members of the Sistas of Metal band, met

a Kenyan rock band called Rish. The band extended an invitation to Robyn to attend the Nairobi guitar festival at the Conservatoire of Music. Robyn wanted Tamla to accompany her and the pair flew for a lightning weekend earlier this month to Nairobi on SAA. The hall is a small and intimate venue that seated about 150 people. It was attended by a lot of guitarists and people who were keen to learn how to play the guitar. The all female lead guitar workshop was called Art of Guitar and was the first of its kind in Africa.

Tamla, with her Ibanez Destroyer, gave a 40 minute talk. She spoke about the village where she grew up, starting to play the guitar at the age of ten and her influences which included Celtic folk music. Robyn, with her Ibanez, also gave a talk as an endorsee of Ibanez. There were questions and answers at the end. There were a few people looking at starting to play and asked questions like which chords to start learning. They were asked about their practice regimes. Tamla approaches music by feeling so she practices when the feeling takes her. All told Tamla practices three to four times a week. Robyn, on the other hand, has a strict practice regime. She plays two hours in the morning before work and late into the night after work every single day. The Director of the Kenyan Conservatoire of Music, Wandiri Karimi, who also plays guitar, gave a demonstration. The other female guitarists were all from Kenya and one of the demonstrations was done by the Rish vocalist.

Tamla and Robyn stayed at the Nairobi plush, high rise hotel Ibis Styles. Tamla said it was an incredible unity of people in Africa and this is what constitutes music. The guitarists all wore the most colourful clothes and the Kenyan nation is a very kind nation. A walk through central Nairobi was a wonderful experience as the ladies came across kindness wherever they went. She was lucky enough to see a rhino, with an egret sitting on its bum, through the fence of the National Park just outside Nairobi and got to feed giraffes at one of the wildlife centres. Watching Tamla play is one of life’s pleasures. This tall, slight, soft spoken beautiful woman sure plays a mean guitar and is heading for bigger things. PLAIN AND SIMPLE

The ultimate small off-road vehicle SUZUKI is bucking all trends with this new Jimny. In a world where new cars are getting bigger, heavier and more boring to look at than their predecessors, this new Jimny is smaller and lighter than its already diminutive forerunner. Suzuki Jimny 2019 Not only that but it is also more capable offroad and - paradoxically - for the most part bigger inside too. Suzuki has stuck to the Jimny’s roots when it comes to whom the car is aimed at. This new version, which is due to arrive in showrooms in January, is still first and foremost an off-road vehicle. Yes it is small - tiny even - but that means it can often get to places other 4x4s cannot because of its size. As a result, buyers will be people that need this go-anywhere capability, such as those in rural communities, off-road enthusiasts and businesses that require getting engineers to remote locations. However, this time around Suzuki can also expect a broader audience simply because of how the car looks. Available at BB Suzuki Tzaneen soon.

Plasies wen Tzaneen Eisteddfod loshande

Pretorius verwerf ‘n medalje as mees veelsydige graad 8.

‘n Veer in die hoed vir Merensky MDDK se musiektutor, me.

Me. Me.

— Joe Dreyer, joe@bulletin.us.com

100 pyle vir opwarming + 476 pyle tydens kompetisie x 25kg (boog se spanning) = 14.4 ton. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
