The residents and shop owners of Phalaborwa town have reached a point beyond fed up with regards to the increasing informal traders who occupy their sidewalks. Literally every metre of pavement within the CBD is littered with shanty stalls selling knock off Chinese products or fruit and vegetables. Some retailers have complained that the entrances to their stores – which they pay very hefty monthly rental for - have been completely blocked off by these traders. It is costing them valuable walk-in customers who are too afraid to traverse the pavements for fear of being accosted by these hawkers. On Tuesday evening the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality decided to take action. With the help of members of the CPF and Phalaborwa SAPS officers, a team started clearing the pavements. A truck was donated to
New 13km tarred road for township The thirteen kilometre dirt road linking the communities of Moime, Lenyenye, Shikwambana, Ntwanano and the Khujwana villages has been closed for the public after construction to tar the road commenced. However local residents and those on emergency operations were allowed to pass through this stretch of road. According to a member of the ward committee who asked not to be named, work on the construction of the tar road began last week on Monday. He said residents from all the affected communities were not left out with the appointment of community members as labourers on the project as it is in line with the government’s job intensive programme. From each village, two people were appointed to work on the project. The construction of the road had been well received by the community. The road is also used by the community of Lenyenye when they go to

the cemeteries to bury their loved ones. When this reporter visited the scene of the construction on Monday, work was stopped after the weekend’s heavy rain. The road by then was a no go area because it was filled with water which made it impossible for even cyclists to reach the township. Non-residents were advised to use the alternative routes which is either the Moime or the Bridgeway road. The work is expected to be concluded in three years. By the time of going to print, attempts to obtain comment from the contractor were not successful. Still in the Lenyenye area, work has commenced on the implementation of the project to supply the residents of Lenyenye with a steel pipe line, aimed at alleviating illegal water connections by residents from the adjacent communities. — Jan Mafetsa

the cause by one of the local business owners and every rickety stall was broken down and loaded onto the back of the vehicle to be transported away. The town clean-up operation was initiated by the municipality with the aim of restoring the face of the once beautiful town. At least twice a year these stalls are removed from the street corners and pavements only to be re-erected the very next morning by the hawkers. Though the removal of their stalls is by no means a permanent solution, it does highlight a number of societal factors, most notably poverty and the selfishness of local politicians who enrich themselves and forget about their voters. By early this morning the hawkers had returned and the stalls were again being erected. Further raids have been planned and will soon be carried out. — Jeff Jackson jeff@bulletin.us.com

The irksome Morgan Street hounds The volunteer parking attendants in the busiest parking bays in town have once again caught the attention of the driving public. The attendants are seen all over Tzaneen’s CBD with their bright yellow vests directing traffic into and out of parking bays and demanding a fee for their efforts. They are apparently employed by Tzaneen Street Parking. This follows after one resident refused to be intimidated by the rushing attendants any longer, and demanded a receipt for the money he had to pay for his parking bay. “I always wondered where the money goes that you pay the parking attendants in Tzaneen, the ones from Tzaneen Street Parking. There is no way that their superiors know how much money they collected for the day, because no receipts are given,” the man said over social media. “I made a point of it to ask for a receipt, firstly for Tzaneen Street Parking to have an idea of what was collected during the day and secondly, I claim these expenses back in the nature of my work.” The man photographed his receipts and presented them over social media. Though the receipts were dated a month apart, both had the same invoice number and there were no carbon copies, they were photocopies. In fact, the original had been copied so many times that the attendant had used a ballpoint pen to rewrite the numbers which had long since faded. There is no telling whether the parking meters on the pavements are actually operational either. If they are, when and by whom are they maintained and how often are they emptied of their coin loads? Five years ago, in May of 2014, the Greater Tzaneen Municipality reportedly signed a deal with a company called BCIT (Pty) Ltd to install parking meters in the CBD after the contract with Diversified Parking Systems expired. The meters were installed in October that same year and was hailed as a “pilot project” even after the tender was awarded to the contractor. Since their inception these parking meters have been the cause of great trepidation as motorists were forced to use smartcards to pay for parking. Only 25 meters were installed during the project’s infancy and the GTM’s traffic department appointed traffic wardens to ensure that the
Motorists traversing the CBD in their quest to find parking will inevitably be accosted by a yellow jacket claiming a fee for allowing you to park your vehicle. Some reports have been received of these parking wardens, or bay hounds, becoming aggressive and verbally abusive should one opt not to depart with your R5 coin.
meters were fed their due. The “wardens” were also empowered by the municipality to issue fines to motorists who failed to adhere to the rules. It is most likely due to the confusion and impracticality of these smartcards that the system failed and was eventually abandoned which most likely left these wardens stranded without employment. It is very likely that those wardens are now the parking attendants hounding motorists for a R5 coin. Bulletin did a search on BCIT and we found a very amateur-looking IT solutions website with no real detail as to what exactly their involvement could be in the implementation and
management of a parking system for a municipality in Limpopo. The business address is listed as a street in Rivonia, Gauteng and the only mention of this contractor on the GTM’s website is a press release dated 30 September 2014, announcing the installation of the new parking meters. A search through the GTM awarded tenders roll yielded very little information and we were unable to ascertain the duration of the BCIT contract. We also did a search on the previous contractors, Diversified Parking Systems, and discovered that this company was involved in a highly publicised tender scandal in Cape Town in 2005. Apparently Diversified Parking Systems won the tender
to manage Cape Town’s inner city parking system. There were alleged irregularities in the manner in which the company secured the tender. Given that the spokesperson for the GTM, Neville Ndlala was still on leave at the time of going to print,
we have not been able to attain any new information on this highly contentious matter, but we will issue a formal media inquiry to his office to gain more clarity. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

EFF has “nothing against whites” The Deputy Commander in chief of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Floyd Shivambu had vehemently denied that he, or his party benefitted from the Limpopo Venda Building Society (VBS) bank looting and went as far as labelling the allegations as utter nonsense. This came just a few hours before his party was set to launch it manifesto for the upcoming elections this Saturday. Addressing the media, Shivambu said they are targeting the almost 40 percent of the electoral poll in order to change the constitution of the country so the mandate of the reserve bank could be altered. He said in the past elections they won only six percent of the electoral toll because they did not go out to the people, and this time it would be different. “We have targeted all the people who registered over the past weekend and those who had in the past been voting for the ruling party. We are targeting to get the 40 percent of the votes so that we can change the constitution to bring to an end the problem of landlessness and poverty. We are also going to canvass the votes of the minority parties,” said Shivambu. “The EFF is not against white people, but the supremacy of the white people born out of the privilege of the past regime. The minority parties are not the whites only. There is, in the country the tendency of the Indian community to treat the black people with disdain despite
they having benefitted from the projects designed by the Apartheid regime. We want this to come to an end.” Shivambu said that his party had no vendetta against individuals but were seeking the truth. He further stated that they are prepared to work hand-in-hand with the current presidential incumbent as long he would be coming to parliament and did not tell lies like was the case during the Zuma era. According to him, Zuma would come to parliament and lie and expect members of his party to protect him because of their majority numbers in parliament. Early last year the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), launched investigations after claims that billions were looted at the Venda building Society by its executives. As the investigations unfolded, it emerged that many political leaders had benefited from the mess in one way or the other. The scandal even resulted in the ANC in the province recalling its mayors as well as some PEC members. “Though we acknowledge that my younger brother was involved in the VBS scandal, to claim that the party benefited from the theft is utter nonsense. The people who were involved in the VBS Saga had action taken against them to recover the monies. We even went to parliament to talk about the matter and so far nothing came up to prove that we are wrong.” — Jan Mafetsa
Too rich for a toilet Five killed by pylon Scores of residents in the Khujwana and Lephepane areas decided not to register to vote in this coming elections because they claim they are tired of being lied to by politicians more so when elections are just around the corner. They claim that some of the promises made during the door to door campaigns tend to fall on deaf ears immediately after election time passed. Wellington Monyela, from the Ntwanano section of Khujwana village, said that the manner in which the community of Khujwana is run does not motivate him to go and register. He said his main problem is when service delivery is supposed to reach him, it is diverted to other areas. He cited an example in which he saw his name among those to receive free toilets but it could not be built for him. He said he was told he was rich. “When I approached the councillor, who called me to a meeting in which names of beneficiaries for the toilet project were to be checked, he said it was the responsibility of members of the ward committee to see to it that we get the toilets. When I approached members of the ward committee, I was sent from pillar to post. Finally I was told that the reason I could not receive my toilet was because I was not poor enough,” said Monyela. “I was so upset by this statement. When services are supposed to be delivered, some sectors of the public seem to be favoured above others, but when we are supposed to register and vote, that is not seen. From that day I told
the councillors and his members of his ward committee that when they want to get the votes, my home should not be entered because we do not deserve to get free government services. Should I go to toilet in a makeshift structure so councillors could see me?” Another resident from Lephepane, not far fom Khujwana, Sonti Nthoke, told Bulletin in an interview that the reason it was not possible for her to register for the elections is that she had lost all hope in the government of the day. She said she had been roaming the streets collecting scrap for many years in the hope that one day a job will come her way, but to no avail. “That there are no jobs is understandable, but that jobs are given to members of one church in the ward only, left me with the notion that I no longer see any reason why I should go to vote. It is unfair that I struggle while those who are related to leaders of the ruling party are looked after and have their things run smoothly for them. In some instances you would hear the nephews and nieces of councillors picking the jobs they want, while these are advertised as an eye-blind.” However, registering in the Khujwana area was reported to have gone smoothly despite reports that members of the ruling African National Congress were canvassing in front of the gates of the voting station while the other parties were seen nowhere. Though the police were present in large numbers, acts of political intolerance were not reported. — Jan Mafetsa
An Eskom pylon is reported to have caused the death of at least five animals, including a white rhino, near Skukuza in the Kruger National Park over the weekend. The pylon collapsed during a heavy storm that hit the area on Friday evening. The animals were electrocuted when a live wire was exposed as the pylon hit the ground. Rangers from that section were activated to keep the lions away so that the live powerline, which was lying on the ground, could be repaired. Upon closer inspection of the site, the
rangers discovered a dead giraffe on scene. Two hyenas and a lion were also found dead near the carcass and it is suspected that the pylon killed the giraffe first and that the predator and scavengers were electrocuted while trying to feed on the carcass. As a precautionary measure, the rhino’s horns were removed and taken for safe keeping secret storage facility in Skukuza where all other horns are kept. At the time of going to print, the spokesperson for the KNP, Ike Phaahla, could not be reached for comment.

Granny’s Grumbles - Incidents and accidents
Anyone who has been involved in the mining world will be only too aware of incidents and accidents, especially the latter. An incident is something that can disrupt your work or delay your work – an accident is a serious matter which can result in serious injury or death. The investigations and paperwork involved in either of the above is frightening and since it affected our mine as a whole (safety statistics indicated exactly how safe or unsafe the mine was were displayed for the whole world to see) nobody wanted to be accused of even minor infractions. It became so bad that even accidents that took place in the home environment were expected to be aired at safety meetings and discussed. This resulted in many incidents/accidents being swept under the carpet so to speak. One that springs to mind was a divisional manager who inadvertently left one of the drawers of his steel desk open – he rushed around the corner of the desk to answer his telephone and ripped open his shin which started bleeding profusely. His secretary was despatched to the
ladies cloakroom to grab a towel and then his car was brought to the front of the office. He then shot into town and had his leg stitched up. Since this event took place early in the morning, the only person aware of the incident was his secretary (who had been sworn to secrecy). Since it was a home accident it did not affect the mine’s safety record although he had to think up a story for the next divisional safety meeting. Now I was expected to take the minutes of our divisional safety meetings and to be honest I found the meetings extremely dull. However, one meeting springs to mind as being hilariously funny and was as follows. After all the incident/accident statistics for the division and the mine as a whole had been discussed the divisional manager was expected to speak about some safety issue. Somebody had mentioned to him that some of the signs dotted around the mine were not easily understood by some of the less educated members of the division so the manager had brought along a few safety/health signs and he intended finding out if they were understood by everybody. The first sign was a stick man in a crouching position (obviously running) towards the clinic which was indicated by a red cross. Gilbert (the messenger) immediately had his hand up when the room was asked if they knew what this indicated. To him this was a man who had been in a serious accident – both hands had been cut off, both feet had been cut off and he was running towards a hospital. A couple more signs were shown and it appeared that most people had the general idea. There was a picture of safety boots and the question was – had anybody been involved in an incident when the safety boots had really helped. The irrepressible Gilbert leapt to his feet. Some weeks previously he had suspected that his wife had been cheating on him so decided to let her think that he had gone to work but he had a couple of hours later sneaked back. Indeed he had caught
his wife in a compromising situation with her lover whereupon Gilbert had hit him so hard that he fell to floor – Gilbert had then kicked him with his safety boots – and then again with his safety boots and then again with his safety boots. At this stage the manager felt obliged to stop the narrative since it appeared that the company safety boots were being used for more than safety on the job. The problem was that Gilbert’s compatriots were all nodding in agreement and I fully expected there to be a round of applause. The boss indicated that I was NOT to minute this. Another interesting incident took place at a different Safety meeting. The head of Safety would regularly attend divisional meetings to keep everybody informed of new safety products that were intended to keep everybody safe and happy. He was discussing the merits of new safety gloves which were on order. Practically indestructible, they were also snug fitting and comfortable. To prove his point he had on a pair of the gloves and asked if anybody present had a pen-knife. A shift foreman handed over his biltong knife whereupon the superintendent held out his left hand and brought the knife (which was in his right hand) down in a slashing movement. Presumably a knife that is used for cutting biltong is a bit sharper than a butter knife as there was a dead silence as the glove split open and blood oozed out. The glove order was cancelled. The same superintendent was involved in another incident which was amusing for those of us who were not involved but which was embarrassing for the said gentleman and also the mine. Some Very Important People were being taken on a tour of the mine in a company Mercedes – the superintendent was passing beneath a conveyor whilst extolling the mine’s safety record when a fistsized rock dislodged from the conveyor and dropped onto the rear window of the vehicle. The paperwork involved in that investigation was incredible.

The Message Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church SHALOM. Unity. What is it all about? As I see it, it is coming together in everything I thought, word and deed. It is no use saying we are a united country if prejudices still exist. We are all guilt of this irrespective of who or what we are. We judge other because of what happens, blaming all of the same ethnic group as a whole and not just the perpetrator, the individual or specific group. It only takes one maverick to incite many. People need to be educated to have a paradigm shift, one in which we accept that we are all created equal. We need to put the past behind us, yet not forget it and stop blaming others for what happened years ago. In Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, he states in Chapter 12 versus 12 and 13. 12 “Just as the body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.” 13 “For we were all baptized by the one Spirit so as to form one body- whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free- and we were all given the one Spirit to drink” We need to believe this to grow in our relationships with others. We need to look at others as individuals who can, by the grace of God, unify and grow together in peace and harmony. By accepting that we might differ in the way we were brought up. By re-examining our way of life and truly correct what we find wrong. By the power of the Holy Spirit and His guidance this will be possible, however difficult we may find it. For it is in forgiving that we are forgiving and in giving that we receive. It is not easy to forgive others if we do not first forgive ourselves. We are all one nation under God, reach out to others, we all have the same blood flowing in our bodies, it is our minds that need feeding, it may be extremely difficult to change, but if we do not try we will never know if we can. Xyza Savanna accessories storm the market She’s brainy, beautiful with a bubbly personality, and three months into launching her own business, she’s making a roaring success of it. Xyza Bothma (26), originally from Haenertsburg, is described by a former Stanford Lake College teacher, “Xyza was a hard worker and a pleasure to teach.” After school, Xyza excelled at university. She obtained her Economics Degree at University of Johannesburg with distinction and went on to get her Post Graduate Degree with distinction at the University of Pretoria. Xyza says, “I had to work really hard to get those marks.” As a qualified econometrician, she joined Allan Gray in Cape Town as an asset manager. Xyza says, “I loved working at Allan Gray but, throughout my five years of study, not once did I say that I was going to become an economist. I did the degree because I liked the business side of it but I always yearned to do something creative.” With a keen sense of fashion, Xyza began formulating her dream while at Allan Gray to manufacture her own range of accessories, exclusive yet practical handbags. With her then boyfriend, Duncan, whom she married at Cheerio Gardens in September last year, they travelled Europe for three months in September 2017. She went window shopping looking at the latest handbag designs. She visited factories in the countryside of Portugal and Spain and visited a world-renowned hardware manufacturer, an hour out of Milan in Italy. She’d already registered a business in July 2017. A homemaker’s expo in Johannesburg cemented Xyza’s dream to start her own range. She came across a couple selling Nguni skins and their own leather handbags. She bought both. Realising the leather handbag wasn’t well made she turned to Duncan and said, “I’m going to design my own handbags.” Xyza bought a book from an online fashion school. She’d found it difficult to put her ideas on paper but the book taught her so much from fashion lingo to the difference between A and C grade skins to putting her ideas and designs on paper. Family friends were prepared to invest in Xyza’s business and she took three months to formulate a business plan. She revised the plan to reduce costs and in May 2018 the funds were deposited into her ac-
count. With the extensive research and groundwork done, Xyza launched her exclusive brand of handbags, Xyza Savanna, at the end of October 2018. She sat with her manufacturers in Cape Town, showed them her designs, sourced pure white Nguni and white springbok and imported the up market hardware from Italy. All Xyza Savanna bags have tobacco-coloured suede lining. It’s light enough to see into the bags but dark enough not to look grubby. Xyza Savanna comes in two different ranges, casual and exotic. The exotic bags are for corporate ladies who won’t jam pack their bags with too many items. The casual range is for a modern day woman who needs to put in as much as possible. The casual Xyza Savanna bags start at three-and-a-half-thousand rand and the exotics are from R17, 950.00 to R26, 950.00. The top exclusive ostrich skin bag sells at over R30, 000.00. Xyza says, “I’m able to customise and realise personal requests.” Her target market is from age 35 upwards. Ostrich is very popular with a wide variety of colours available. She also uses cow leathers, Nguni skins, Burmese python and springbok for the straps. She’s signed up ex-Miss South Africa, Melinda Bam as her brand ambassador to endorse her handbags and is looking at a few more fashion icons to endorse her product. Her entrepreneurial skills come from her successful parents whose businesses are Inspired by Moya, based in Politsi and Victorious Carpets

and Blinds in Polokwane. Her bags are named after people she loves – the Moya top-handle exotic, a signature bag, after her mother; Cindy shopper, also a signature bag, after her cousin; Izzy hobo bag named after another cousin Israel; Shirley tote after her godmother Shirley Stumbles. Xyza will extend her range to include purses and belts and eventually footwear. She says that Ethiopia and Kenya have some wonderful manufacturers and she wants to keep her business on the African continent as much as possible. Viewing of her handbags is by appointment only at her Tzaneen home. Contact Xyza on 083 271 7793.

— Jeff Jackson jeff@bulletin.us.com

Hulle almal was “dier”baar!

Convincing ISA win for Badgers The Independent Schools Athletics competition took place on Friday, the 25th of January at the Peter Mokaba Athletics Stadium in Polokwane. Five schools took part in the meeting and there was fierce competition between Stanford Lake College, Curro Heuwelkruin and PEPPS on the track as well as in the field events. The Stanford athletes excelled in the long hurdles, 800m and 1 500m events which put them ahead on the points table. There were some great performances from a number Stanford’s athletes, with three Stanfordians taking top titles. Lia Revelas was Senior Girls Victrix Ludorum, Rofhiwa Nevhutalu was Senior Boys Victor Ludorum and Isabella Drewett was Junior Girls Victrix Ludorum. The combined efforts of all of SLC’s athletes secured a convincing win for the school, with 739 points - a staggering 52 points ahead of the second placed school, Curro Heuwelkruin. This is the first time in the history of Stanford to have two anglers representing the country overseas and SLC wishes them the best of luck when they do. Freestone was selected for the youth SASACC team which
will compete in the Czech Youth Championship in the Czech Republic in May later this year. Maritz was selected for the Youth Protea team which will compete in the Youth World Championships in the Czech Republic in August this year. Drawing inspiration from world champions is the secret recipe employed by the athletes at Laerskool Tzaneen Primary in order to cultivate future champions. Two of these shining stars recently acted out on the word of encouragement uttered by legend of the court, Rafael Nadal to be included in the provincial tennis squad.
JP Botha and Megan-Lee Mans will participate in the South African national schools championship to be held in Bloemfontein between the 15th and 19th of March this year. They were selected based upon their outstanding performances during the last season which saw both these rock-
ing racketeurs outplaying opponents from as far afield as Gauteng and Mpumalanga. “I play each point like my life depends on it.”
