Election madness defaces town The disgraceful manner in which the EFF have once again elected to ignore the IEC code of conduct and the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s (GTM)’s bylaws last week, has caused some heated debates over social media. Many staunch EFF supporters resorting to their usual racial slurs and underlying threats of taking land from Tzaneen’s land owners after the 8th of May, made their voice heard over this publication’s Facebook page. In a blatant act of insubordination which has by now come to be expected of the red overhauls, hundreds of campaign posters were glued to the sides of walls, concrete dustbins and municipal structures during the evening of the 13th of March. Chairperson of the Local Economic Development Ward Committee for Ward 14, Nathi Sedibe contacted the municipality that following morning to demand that action be taken and the posters removed. Shortly after his call, the DA Constituency Head for Limpopo, Desiree van der Walt, also contacted the municipal management and demanded that the illegal posters be removed immediately. This never happened and throughout the following day groups of EFF sup-
porters were spotted nailing the posters to trees and pasting them to the sides of the bridges at the entrance to town. When Van der Walt stopped at one of the sites and reprimanded the group, she was met with insults and threats of assault. Finally on Sunday morning news reached our office that the GTM’s Traffic Department had started removing the posters. During their clean-up process they also removed a number of ANC campaign posters which were also flighted illegally in the same manner as the EFF had done. Not surprisingly, that afternoon the posters were back up again and this time the defecators had taken to covering boulders, traffic signs and even sections of municipality’s palisade fencing in red. According to the law, posters must be printed onto hardboard or corex board backing and be fastened only onto municipal lamp posts by means which would allow easy removal after the elections. There is a very small fee per poster payable to the municipality upon the successful application and obtaining of a permit. A shockingly small fine of R2 000 for transgression of this law is payable by the political party who refuses to play by the rules.

Motshekga to end pit toilets President at ZCC The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has promised to bring to an end the nearly 4 000 pit latrines currently in use at schools within the next three years. This comes at the time schools are in recess and while Minister Angie Motshekga might be ending her term as the political head of the Department. Announcing the project last week, Motshekga, said that they had long been working on the programme to do away with pit latrines at schools and to date they are left with about 3 898 schools while about 787 schools were provided with proper sanitation facilities. The minister said that at some of the province’s schools, the project is already in either the planning, design or the building phase. “It should be remembered that the eradication of pit toilets at schools did not start with the launch of the Sanitation Appropriate for Education (SAFE) programme by President Cyril Ramaphosa in June last year. We started with sanitation programmes at schools in 2000 and since
then 10 621 schools have been provided with advanced sanitation facilities,” she said. “Many of the schools that remain are those with particular requirements, for example no water borne sewage systems and those that require sanitation alternative technology. We are working with other Departments to find solutions for these schools.” Last year in June, President Cyril Ramaphosa launched the SAFE programme with an injection of R3,4 billion to eradicate pit toilets at schools. However, In Tzaneen though the problem of pit toilets still persists, several schools in the Khujwana circuit had the problem done away with after the construction of several multimillion schools with state-of-the-art sanitation technology. The new schools renovated from scratch so far are Thabeng, Khujwana Combined, and the Graighead Estate Primary School, while another is under construction at Xihoko village. — Jan Mafetsa
More drownings Residents of Muhlava Village, east of Tzaneen, were shocked on Tuesday when two children drowned in the Letsitele River passing near the Village. The Mopani District Municipality (MDM) has appealed to communities and parents in particular to take care of their children as the schools are still in recess. Again, residents expressed the need for the fencing off of open dams within communities in order to minimise the dangers of people drowning or being murdered and their bodies dumped into open
waters. This follows the discovery of a man at Khopo Village near Lephepane who allegedly was found floating in the dam by people who were there to fetch water. According to reports, the man appeared to have been murdered and his body dumped in the river, but this had not been verified at the time of going to print. Last week, Bulletin reported on the sad case of another drowning victim at Khujwana Dam. In this instance the man had been found by fellow fishermen. — Jan Mafetsa
President Cyril Ramaphosa was, at the time of going print yesterday, visiting Boyne near Haenerstburg. The President was to deliver a key note address at the Zion Christian Church (ZCC)`s handover ceremony of their refurbished and extended facilities at the Morabathota High School and Evelyne Lekganyane Clinic at Zion City Moria. The ceremony to be attended by Minister Angie Motshekga and Limpopo Premier, Stanley Mathabatha, was due to take place at 14:00. According to presidency spokesperson, Khusela Diko, the initiation
is the demonstration of active collaboration between government and social partners to realise the five urgent tasks as stated by the President during the State of the Nation address this year. The urgent tasks were named as improvement of the education system, developing required skills, as well improving the conditions of life for all South Africans. The event took place at the school grounds. The school was founded by the Church to supplement the other schools that were built inside the Moria Church premises. — Jan Mafetsa
Clinic project delayed over jobs The much anticipated construction of the new clinic at Khopo Village near Lephepane is going to be delayed after the community and the contractor could not agree on the number of people that should be hired from the community. Community members told Bulletin that they were surprised to see the contractor arriving with his own people to work on the project instead hiring locals. This came in wake of allegations that the contractor could not start with the construction of the clinic after business people in community said they want to be part of the project. The clinic is being constructed after a visit to the village by Limpopo Health MEC, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, who promised to build a new clinic. Community leader in the area, Medupi Phalane said that it was not true that
the work on the construction of the clinic had been halted because of intervention by business people. Phalane said that matters came to a head when the contractor employed only a handful of local villagers. He further said the community held a meeting during the weekend where all the problems were put into perspective. “It is important for members of the community to get the other side of the story before rushing to the media. We had worked so hard for the project to be where it is today. We could not stop the project because of the worries of the business community,” he explained. “The contractor wanted to bring about 25 skilled workers while from the community he was going to hire only six people. He told us that his
staff are skilled and in real sense it meant the 25 workers were going to supervise the six community members. Other members of the community had appealed to leaders to stop making issues where there is nothing and let the people have service delivery.” When this reporter had visited the construction site on Monday afternoon, no work had yet commenced. The entrance of the clinic was covered in posters asking that the government to build a new clinic for the community. In another development, work on the construction of the Leseka and Mathlogwe Clinics had not yet started due also to residents wanting the contractor to hire people from the community instead of bringing his own people. — Jan Mafetsa

Niemand is gevang of inhegtenis geneem nie. Granny’s Grumbles - INCIDENTS AND ACCIDENTS
Anyone who has been involved in the mining world will be only too aware of incidents and accidents, especially the latter. An incident is something that can disrupt your work or delay your work – an accident is a serious matter which can result in serious injury or death. The investigations and paperwork involved in either of the above are frightening and since it affected our mine as a whole (safety statistics indicated exactly how safe or unsafe the mine was were displayed for the whole world to see) nobody wanted to be accused of even minor infractions. It became so bad that even accidents that took place in the home environment were expected to be aired at safety meetings and discussed. This resulted in many incidents/accidents being swept under the carpet so to speak. One that springs to mind was a divisional manager who inadvertently left one of the drawers of his steel desk open – he rushed around the corner of the desk to answer his telephone and ripped open his shin which started bleeding profusely. His secretary was dispatched
to the ladies cloakroom to grab a towel and then his car was brought to the front of the office. He then shot into town and had his leg stitched up. Since this event took place early in the morning, the only person aware of the incident was his secretary (who had been sworn to secrecy). Since it was a home accident it did not affect the mine’s safety record although he had to think up a story for the next divisional safety meeting. Now I was expected to take the minutes of our divisional safety meetings and to be honest I found the meetings extremely dull. However, one meeting springs to mind as being hilariously funny and was as follows. After all the incident/accident statistics for the division and the mine as a whole had been discussed the divisional manager was expected to speak about some safety issue. Somebody had mentioned to him that some of the signs dotted around the mine were not easily understood by some of the less educated members of the division so the manager had brought along a few safety/health signs and he intended finding out if they were understood by everybody. The first sign was a stick man in a crouching position (obviously running) towards the clinic which was indicated by a red cross. Gilbert (the messenger) immediately had his hand up when the room was asked if they knew what this indicated. To him this was a man who had been in a serious accident – both hands had been cut off, both feet had been cut off and he was running towards a hospital. A couple more signs were shown and it appeared that most people had the general idea. There was a picture of safety boots and the question was – had anybody been involved in an incident when the safety boots had really helped. The irrepressible Gilbert leapt to his feet. Some weeks previously he had suspected that his wife had been cheating on him so decided to let her think that he had gone to work but he had a couple of hours later sneaked back. Indeed he had
caught his wife in a compromising situation with her lover whereupon Gilbert had hit him so hard that he fell to floor – Gilbert had then kicked him with his safety boots – and then again with his safety boots and then again with his safety boots. At this stage the manager felt obliged to stop the narrative since it appeared that the company safety boots were being used for more than safety on the job. The problem was that Gilbert’s compatriots were all nodding in agreement and I fully expected there to be a round of applause. The boss indicated that I was NOT to minute this. Another interesting incident took place at a different Safety meeting. The head of Safety would regularly attend divisional meetings to keep everybody informed of new safety products that were intended to keep everybody safe and happy. He was discussing the merits of new safety gloves which were on order. Practically indestructible, they were also snug fitting and comfortable. To prove his point he had on a pair of the gloves and asked if anybody present had a pen-knife. A shift foreman handed over his biltong knife whereupon the superintendent held out his left hand and brought the knife (which was in his right hand) down in a slashing movement. Presumably a knife that is used for cutting biltong is a bit sharper than a butter knife as there was dead silence as the glove split open and blood oozed out. The glove order was cancelled. The same superintendent was involved in another incident which was amusing for those of us who were not involved but which was embarrassing for the said gentleman and also the mine. Some Very Important People were being taken on a tour of the mine in a company Mercedes – the superintendent was passing beneath a conveyor whilst extolling the mine’s safety record when a fistsized rock dislodged from the conveyor and dropped onto the rear window of the vehicle. The paperwork involved in that investigation was incredible.

‘n Mens is ‘n ingewikkelde wese!

Maluma – the Commander in Chief A total of 515 registered guests attended the annual Maluma Symposium which was successfully hosted on the grounds of Merensky High School on Wednesday and Thursday last week. This year there were 24 per cent more attendees than the previous instalment in 2018 and a combined 160 per cent more than the 2015 symposium which reflected the growth in popularity of the beloved Maluma avocado. Of those in attendance at this year’s symposium (which has come a long way from its humble beginnings nine years ago around a boardroom table), 254 were Maluma farmers which translated into 70 per cent of the avocado industry’s producers gathered together in one hall. A more remarkable platform for networking one would indeed be hard tasked to find. As is customary, the Maluma Symposium attracts guests and speakers from across the globe and this year was no different. In total, 54 international guests representing 11 countries were seated in the Merensky School hall with notepads and pens at the ready. These guests included 17 from Israel, 9 from Australia, 6 from Zimbabwe, 5 from Mozam-
bique, 4 from Peru, 4 from Mexico, 3 from Spain, 3 from the United States of America and one each from Chile, New Zealand and China. The international guest total grew by 55.5% from 2018. What made this year’s symposium a little different was the clever play on the national elections. In his welcoming address to the representatives, Donovan Lewis of Allesbeste announced the arrival of the AFF; the Avocado Freedom Fighters who would be tending to the beck and call of the attendees to ensure the success of the event. Another special announcement was the Maluma’s rebranding which featured a stunning new look Toyota Rush wrapped in black by local designer, Erik de Jager. Perhaps one of the most exciting announcements on the day was the promising new developments in the field of artificial intelligence. Allesbeste has, through their own research and development, launched an AI programme capable of identifying Maluma avocadoes off footage taken by drones scouting the blocks in the plantations. This technology will greatly aid in the accurate weighing and marking of picker bins and will eventually lead the way into autonomous picking and packing systems of the future. For more on the exciting news at the symposium please be sure and pick up your copy of the AgriBulletin next week. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Altona reigns in the goals The first instalment of the Bulletin Sevens Stick League field hockey tournament reached a climatic finale on Thursday evening as the four top teams in the three divisions played off for the honour of hoisting their respective trophies. The top teams in each of the divisions; Men’s, Women’s and Junior’s, waited with baited breath to learn who they would face in the final. The stands were packed with excited spectators, the braai fires tempted the taste buds and some of the top hockey stick brands in the world were on sale through their local ambassadors at discounted prices. In the Men’s division Bulletin Snipers faced off against the Letaba Wireless team whom they beat in their previous encounter by 4 goals to 3 and were aiming to repeat their performance. The Letaba Wireless boys however, had other plans and were hungry for retribution and a chance at the trophy. By the end of the 30-minute game it was Letaba who bulldozed their way into the final by beating the Snipers 4-0. The danger men in the Letaba camp were Matt Oosthuyse and Bradley Altona who scored the majority of the team’s goals throughout the five weeks leading up to the finals. In the finals Letaba were pitted against the Jackson 7’s in what was described as the battle between the two halves of the Tzaneen Club
League’s A-team. It was a fast-paced, skillfuelled encounter which saw both sides make turns to visit the others’ net as both teams boasted some of the best players in the area in their arsenal. In the end however, it came down to a shoot-out which was ultimately won by Letaba Wireless after flick at-
tempt by Louis van Dyk of the Jackson 7’s failed to find it’s equalizing mark. Letaba Wireless were rewarded with gold medals and a trophy for their exceptional efforts and will now look towards the second tournament at the end of April to defend their title. Jackson 7’s had to settle for second place while Bulletin Snipers took third position and Jaguars fourth. In the Women’s Division it was the mighty Pitches that waited eagerly in the finals to meet their rivals for the top honours. The Pitches is a phenomenal team comprised mostly of the provincial IPT team who made it to the national inter-provincial finals last year. Their star keeper Alana Troger, is well-respected as the epitome of solid defence and the person to beat should one entertain notions of victory. Stepping up to the plate to take on the seemingly unbeatable keeper were the youthful Lunachicks comprised mostly of the first team players from the Stanford Lake College camp. Despite their ambitious attacking play and the advantage of a home astro (Stanford have a newly installed water-based astro which they unveiled late last year), they were unable to match the experience of the more mature Jayden Mobahay and Bradley Altona Pitches. In the end, Trog-
er’s lightning quick reactions proved impenetrable and the Chicks had to bow to a 3-0 defeat. The Junior division champs were the delightful all-girls school team, Snickerdoodles who battled through the semi’s against the Peacemakers (a match that ended in favour of the Snickerdoodles 7-2) to face the Carbon Fibres in the final. Though a heavily contested match, the Snickerdoodles proved a tad out of their opponents’ league and managed to pummel through to a 7-0 victory. An awards ceremony was held after the matches where medals were handed over to the winning teams and floating trophies to the captains. Jayden Mobahay, one of the local hockey coaches and an international player, handed over a world class Ritual 75 Specialist stick (valued at R3 500) to Bradley Altona who scored the most goals across all three divisions (16) during the tournament. The Bulletin Sevens Stick League was made possible through the support of a number of sponsors and organizers which include Elmarie and Tarek Jansen, Jayden Mobahay, Louis van Dyk, Astro@BenVorster, Ben Vorster High School, Far North Bulletin and Safari Pub and Grill who supplied the medals and trophies. The next tournament starts in little over a month and everyone is invited to enter a team for the league. So far there are already 18 teams in total with more registering every week so don’t miss out. Contact Elmarie on 072 767 7330 for information. — Joe Dreyer

Golf days such as this one is a fantastic way for us to generate some form of a financial injection. We are extremely thankful to Jon Hyde and Trophy Toyota for coming on board in this regard and helping us put this day together.” Trophy Toyota has been a longstanding friend of the Letaba SPCA and Jon Hyde has always been available to assist in their most dire times. Trophy Toyota was the main sponsor for the golf day which helped raise significant funds for the organization. Other local businesses also chipped in and showed their support through the sponsoring of various tee’s and some fantastic prizes which were handed to the winners. “This was a great first run for us and we have learnt a lot from the — Joe Dreyer experienced guys, esjoe@bulletin.us.com pecially how a golf day

— Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
