The acting chief of the Vhavenda kingdom in Limpopo and the former chairperson of the now defunct Venda Building Society (VBS), Tony Mphephu Ramabulana, will be deposed as the acting chief of the kingdom. This after the Supreme Court of Appeal last Friday ruled that his appointment by former state president Jacob Zuma was unlawful, unconstitutional and invalid. The matter follows the challenge by Ramabulana`s niece, Princess Tshimangadzo Masindi Dimbanyika Mphephu, shortly after Ramabulana was appointed by Jacob Zuma in 2010. The princess appealed to challenge the High Court decision which recognised Tony Mphephu Ramabulana as the rightful Vhavenda king. Following the move, the Limpopo government postponed the coronation. The latest revelation is likely to boost the claim by a certain family in Bolobedu that the reigning Queen Modjadji VI’s position might also be disputed because she was appointed by Zuma. VBS is the bank which loaned Jacob Zuma R7.8 Million to pay for his renovations at his Nkandla homestead following the recommendations by the former public protector, Thuli Madonsela, that he repay all the money spent during the construction. Ramabulana was not a wellknown figure in Tzaneen circles until last year during a visit to Bolobedu by President Cyril Ramaphosa where he claimed that the Balobedu were his relatives. During this visit, the Ramabulana alongside the Balobedu asked the president to
give them all the land from Westfalia going north all the way to Thohoyandou because according to him, it belonged to them. The President responded by declaring that land that would be returned to the community would be used to develop agriculture. Ramabulana raised his eyebrows and argued that because land was taken from his ancestors, it should be returned back to traditional leaders. Shortly after these dramatic events at Mokwakwaila Stadium, news broke that VBS, of which the King was the chairperson at the time, was facing collapse after executives looted funds to maintain their wealthy lifestyles. Ramabulana was mentioned in the report released by advocate Terry Motau titled the “Great BankHeist” in which he allegedly benefitted from the loot. Media reports detailed that the King was living off the loot. Various national media agencies reported that he owned a house in Dainfern in Sandton, that was seen shopping at exclusive boutiques in Johannesburg and that at his house, guests would be lavishly entertained by his butler who also served as his spokesperson. “It is declared that the decision of the eighth respondent (Jacob Zuma) of 14 August 2010 to identify the first respondent (Ramabulana) as a suitable person to be appointed as the king of Vhavenda traditional authority is unlawful, unconstitutional, and is renewed as set aside. It is declared that the eighth respondent and the second respondent (Premier Stan Mathabatha) to recognise the first respondent as king of the Vhavenda tribe are based on the criteria that promotes
gender discrimination are reviewed and set aside in that the discrimination impedes compliance with the provisions of section 2A of the Traditional Leadership and Government Framework Amendment Act of 2009 to progressively promote gender representation in the succession to the position of the King or Queen of Vhavenda,” stated the ruling. Following the court order, Vhavenda, like the Balobedu, who are related will be ruled by a Queen. Tshimangadzo Masindi Mphephu is the daughter of Vhavenda paramount chief Dimbanyika Mphephu. He reigned between 1994 until he died in a car accident in 1997. From then his brother Tony was installed as the acting chief of the tribe until he was recognised by the Jacob Zuma presidency in 2010. The King has since promised to return money donated to him by the bank executives as gifts. Because he has not honoured this promise, his assets are subject to be auctioned off to defray the losses the bank experienced.

AZAPO pays visit to Mamphela ■ Jan Mafetsa Residents of Mamphela section (named after a former struggle hero) of Lenyenye township where surprised last week Tuesday to see politicians and an SABC News camera crew rocking their homes pleading for votes from members of the community. It was during a visit to the township by the Azanian People’s Organisation (AZAPO) president, Strike Thokoane, as part of electioneering for the May 8th elections. The programme of the day started in the CBD where the party leader accompanied by volunteers of the organisation, gathered before they addressing the hawkers - many of whom were happy to be beamed over the television cameras. Thereafter the entourage started entering the homesteads which were mostly occupied by pensioners. Addressing the media after the home visits, Thokoane said that AZAPO cared for the people and that the party stood for hope and change. “We had realised that many people
had lost hope and our organisation stands for that.” Mamphele Ramphele, after whom the area is named, is the former leader of the party and wife of the founder of the Black Consciousness Movement (BCM), Steve Biko. During the Apartheid regime, she was exiled to Lenyenye. Though Mamphela formed her own organisation, Agang, she had left a house in the township which was donated to the community to eradicate poverty and unemployment in the area. The house and the Community Based Centre has now been turned into a crèche. Last year during the Mandela Day celebrations, the SPCA in Tzaneen visited the area and donated goodies to the kids. Other than the big political players such as the DA, the EFF and the ANC, other smaller parties such as the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and the Congress of the People had joined the fray in urging community members to lend their hand during the upcoming elections.

How does your municipality rank nationally? ■ Joe Dreyer Greater Tzaneen Municipality ranked 153rd out of 213 municipalities in the country. Shockingly the GTM was outperformed by the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality (BPM) who ranked in 145th overall but as a consolation prize did slightly better than Modjadjiskloof (GLM) who made the list at 187th. These figures were released by Good Governance Africa (GGA), a non-profit organization that publishes a Government Performance Index annually which analyses the service delivery achievements and failures of municipalities across the country. These figures are sourced from publicly available sources namely Stats SA, Gaffney Local Government Year Book, National Treasury, Municipalities of South Africa and the Auditor General’s reports. They released this latest index this week. A clearer understanding of the absolute decay in governance and the complete failure of local municipalities to provide services to their residents, is nowhere more blatantly apparent than when viewing the statistics from a national level. Limpopo province ranks lowest on every service delivery and financial audit scale when compared to other provinces. In this province, which is almost entirely ANC-run and considered as the stronghold of the EFF, only 23.5% of households have access to flushing toilets compared to 88.2% in the Western Cape. Ashamedly only 13.7% of households have access to piped water - which should be considered a travesty when one compares this to 77.4% in the Western Cape. Surprisingly, Limpopo has the third highest percentage of households with access to electricity at 91.9% (which is remarkable considering the amount of unprosecuted cable theft and transformer destruction especially in the Letsitele
area). It should also be noted here that having access to electricity does not automatically equate to actually having electricity. Limpopo’s overall average score and rank is (not-surprisingly) right at the bottom of the scale. Notably, 15 of the Top 20 performing municipalities in the country are DA-led, with the ANC controlling four and the IFP heading one. The best performing municipality in the country is Mossel Bay in the Western Cape with Senqu in the Eastern Cape (controlled by the ANC) occupying second place. There is not one DA-led municipality in the Bottom 20 on the list of 213 municipalities. In fact, of the 20 worst run municipalities in the country, the ANC controls 17 with the other three led by the IFP. The administrative capacity of municipalities was also evaluated. Only 28 of the 213 municipalities had fully complied with the Auditor General’s requirements of meeting all necessary financial criteria and given an unqualified audit. Of the 28 municipalities, 19 were from the Western Cape, six were from KZN, two from the Eastern Cape and only one from Gauteng. With regards to compliance, all 213 municipalities fully and partially adhered to the National Treasury’s reporting guidelines, with only four out of 213 attaining partial compliance. Editor’s Note: The complete GGA report can be obtained online or you can request a copy from this office by sending an email to this effect to joe@bulletin.us.com. It is truly frightening to note the decline of governance in Limpopo province and this begs the question as to how long this current trend is sustainable before a complete collapse of all infrastructure drives those who currently sustain this economy financially, towards greener pastures elsewhere.
Crash aftermath reverberates through Village ■ Bulletin A cloud of sorrow hangs over the village of Haenertsburg as residents come to terms with the losses of five of their own. The tragic head-on collision, that took all six lives near Silver Mist outside Haenertsburg on the R71 on Friday 12th April, has deeply affected the locals. The five people in the one vehicle were all on their way to work in and around the village when the accident occurred at 07:00. Driver Maria Modipane (42) worked at the local SAPS in an administrative capacity. She also sold Avon products and often bought take-aways from Colleen Venter at the Red Plate restaurant. Colleen and her staff are deeply saddened at the loss not just of a customer but a friend. Elizabeth Maponya (50) was housekeeper and confidante to several families including Stanford
Lake College English teacher Amy Taylor, Errol and Sally Nienaber and the Jack family. Colleen had trained Elizabeth a few years ago, so this was a double shock for the Red Plate owner and her staff. The other three were gardeners. Samuel Makwela (49), Thomas Selomo (56) and Johannes Phekgwana (33) were efficient, hard working, loyal, polite and long-time gardeners, working for several villagers. Samuel and his family had been employed by the Turner family for four generations. Owner of FoodZone, James Turner, who also heads up the local CPF, went to the scene of the accident in his capacity as head of the CPF. “To see Samuel dead, and in the state he was, has broken my heart,” said James as his hands trembled. Maria would have been slowing down to drop off Johannes as he worked for Michelle Britten on
a farm near Silver Mist when the head-on collision occurred. Maria was known as a careful driver and was especially careful when transporting passengers. It took some two hours to cut the deceased out of the completely mangled vehicle with the jaws of life. In the white bakkie was Zelda van der Westhuizen (56) from Tzaneen, a widow and mother of three adult children. Zelda was travelling towards Polokwane and her vehicle was found over the solid white lines on the wrong side of the R71 facing oncoming traffic. Zelda was also known as a careful driver. Although it was misty on Friday morning, that stretch of road is known to be clear of mist. Zelda was pulled out of her vehicle and rushed to MediClinic Hospital, Tzaneen, in a critical state. She
was operated on immediately but passed away at 12:45 that same day. Vicci Bodenstein from the Dog Hound Hotel near Silver Mist, who was good friends with Zelda, is devastated at the loss of her friend. The Forensics High Profile Fatalities Units from Pretoria and Polokwane have launched an investigation. When the families came together at the Polokwane mortuary on Monday 14th April, Warrant Officer Andrew Ngamuni from Haenertsburg SAPS was tasked with asking them whether they wished to have a memorial service. More than 100 people, family, friends and employers have been affected by this tragedy. A memorial service for all who lost their lives in the accident will be held at the Haenertsburg Village Hall at 10:00 on Saturday 4th May.

Two teenagers aged 17 and 18 years, were arrested for the murder of a 17-year old girl in Mokopane. They appeared in the Mokopane Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of murder after the body of presumably a schoolmate, was found at a dumpsite outside the Mokopane CBD last week. Police reports state that the victim left her home at 06:40 to go to school but never returned. Her body was later found by passers-by, still dressed in her school uniform. The police were notified and emergency services arrived on the scene. She was declared dead. The two suspects were tracked down by police and arrested. They both appeared in the Mokopane Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder and were denied bail. The case was postponed to the 23rd of April for a formal bail application pending further investigations. The deceased was later identified by her family as Tebatjo Nkoana. The Police investigations are still continuing. This latest murder again raises the issues of teenagers and children involved in violent crime. Two months prior to the murder of Tebtjo, a group of teenagers were arrested in Polokwane for the brutal attack on a foreign resident.
Baby abducted ■
Jeff Jackson
A young couple were arrested in Polokwane over the weekend after they stole a six week old baby from a young unsuspecting mother in that area. According to the mother (24), she was at a local supermarket with her baby when she was befriended by a strange woman who accompanied her through the aisles. At one point the stranger offered to hold the woman’s baby so that she could have her lunch. After lunch the mother and the stranger walked to another supermarket – the stranger still carrying the baby. At some point during the shopping expedition the stranger disappeared along with the infant. The frantic mother then alerted the police and a task team was set up led by the Deputy Provincial Commissioner responsible for the Crime Detection, Major General Samuel Manala. Following intensive investigation and a well planned sting operation in the area, the suspects were caught. The baby was found in their possession unharmed. The suspect, a 17-year old woman was aided by her 23-year old boyfriend and they both appeared in the Mokopane Magistrate’s Court this week. The woman was denied bail and her case postponed until the 23rd of April. The case against the boyfriend was dropped pending further investigations. The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has commended this Team of SAPS members who worked tirelessly around the clock to ensure that these suspects are brought to book and for safely recovering the baby.
Grab ‘n Burn ■

Looting was at the order of the day during a devastating fire which completely gutted two retail outlets in Burgersfort on Thursday. Locals were seen helping themselves to groceries amid the raging flames. By the time the local Fire Department arrived on the scene, the two shops were completely destroyed. The two stores were Save More Supermarket and Sharp Sharp Fashion Centre which are both thought to be owned by foreign nationals, although this has not yet been confirmed. The cause of the fires were not determined at the time of going to print, but police investigations are still continuing. The damage is currently being calculated by the investigators. The Saps Provincial Head of Corporate Communication and Liaison Services Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo accompanied by the Saps Burgersfort Cluster Commander Brigadier Ria Mkhabela, the Station Commander of Burgersfort Brigadier Risimati Maluleke and the Burgersfort Detective Section Commander Colonel Elias Zwane visited the scene as part of the intervention in the ongoing Police investigations.
Raped in prayer ■
Jeff Jackson
A woman from Letsitele was attacked by an assailant inside a church on Sunday morning whilst in mid-prayer. SAPS from the Tzaneen Cluster reported that the woman was assaulted by a masked man while she was praying and then dragged off into a nearby area where she was tied up and raped. Following the vicious attack, the man fled the scene with the woman’s cell phone. In Bolobedu two women, aged 18 and 21 were raped by two armed suspects in the Shawela Cross area. The suspects allegedly fired a shot at the two women and threatened to shoot them dead if they did not cooperate. They dragged the victims into nearby bushes where they raped them before fleeing the scene. When their assailants had gone, the two women ran for help at a nearby village. The villagers responded in large numbers and managed to track down the two rapists a short while later. Both the suspects are young men aged 21 and 23 and on their person was found a firearm, ammunition and two cell phones. They were arrested and will appear in the Bolobedu Magistrate’s court this week.

A fourteen month old baby boy was found dead in a crèche yard by police in Levubu outside Thohoyandou on Tuesday morning. The baby was staying over at his father’s home when he disappeared and was later discovered, presumably murdered. According to the police the parents of the child had been separated for some time and the baby was staying over at the father’s home in Lhwekhe village. The father stated that he and his son were asleep in the same bed when he awoke at around 20:00 to go to the bathroom. Upon his return he found that his son was not in the bed anymore. The father contacted the police and a search for the child was immediately launched. The lifeless body of the toddler was found the following morning at the schoolyard a few metres away from the house. The body showed signs of multiple injuries. The cause of death had not yet been determined but police have launched a manhunt for suspects which could have been involved in the death of this child. This leads us to believe that the cause of death was indeed murder. Anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspect(s) involved in this matter, may contact Colonel Chabiseka Micheal Baloyi at 082 565 7345 or the crime stop number 0860010111 or the crime Line SMS 32211 or the nearest Police Station. The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has strongly condemned this heinous crime perpetrated against children.
Unwelcome guest ■
Jeff Jackson
A women was startled by the presence of a shirtless, shoeless young African male in her home near Sugarloaf on Friday evening. According to a neighbour who was startled by the woman’s screams at around 19:30, the family were entertaining guests earlier that evening. When the guests had left and the woman returned to her home she was startled by the sight of an intruder in her house. She let out a scream and the intruder fled. Members of the local security company patrolling the area and neighbourhood watch in the Arbor Park were notified and response teams searched the neighbourhood. During the search they reported hearing shots fired in the Park Street area. Many more volunteers joined the search which led them to Park Street and King Edward Street. After approximately two hours searching every yard in the area, the search was called off and the suspect escaped. It is reported that the suspect is a notorious character who has been connected to numerous house robberies in the area for a number of months. His modus operandi is to enter homes and steal electronics before the occupants are aware of his presence. He is described as always being shirtless and never wearing shoes. Residents in the Arbor Park area are warned to ensure that all windows and doors are securely locked before retiring for the evening.

A 70-year old traditional healer (Sangoma) was brutally slaughtered by the community of Mopye village on Monday evening. This after she was accused of protecting her 24-year old grandson with witchcraft and muthi to enable him to continue terrorising the community. The grandson is reportedly linked to a number of rapes including that of a child in the area. The community and the police have allegedly been looking for the suspect for a number of months. The tipping point was when a member of the community heard the old woman boasting that her grandson could never be arrested as she had empowered him with magic muthi. Armed with pangas and other melee weapons, the community formed a mob and headed to the old woman’s house. At around 20:00 on Monday evening the angry mob forcefully entered the home of , Annah Mkhwanazi, dragged her out of the structure and viciously beat and stabbed her to death in the street. Her throat was slit from end to end. A witness told Bulletin that when they noticed the angry mob entering the medicine woman’s home, they were afraid to confront them for fear of being assaulted themselves. They contacted the police instead. The witnesses further stated that eight hours after the killing, the first police vehicles arrived on the scene. The woman’s body lay naked in the middle of the street. She had been decapitated. “The police told us that they could not respond to the call at the time of the incident as they were afraid that the community would overpower them as they did not have enough officers on duty at the station.” Limpopo police spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe confirmed the incident on Wednesday morning and said that the suspects involved in this matter were still unknown, and that no arrests have yet been made. Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects is requested to contact the police. He said police investigations are underway to determine how many cases the grandson of the victim was facing.
Desiree skryf Parliament’s Committee
Select Committees:
Parliamentary committees are established as instruments of the two Houses in terms of the Constitution to facilitate oversight and monitor the government. These committees are often referred to as the “engine rooms” of Parliament’s oversight and legislative work. Members serve on committees according to their Party’s proportional presentation in Parliament.
The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) appoints from its permanent members a number of Select Committees to shadow the work of the various national government departments and to deal with Bills. Because only 54 of the 90 NCOP Members are permanent delegates compared to the 400 of the NA, the Select Committees oversee the work of more than one national government department.
Public Accounts Committees:
Portfolio Committees:
The National Assembly Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) acts as Parliament’s watchdog over the way taxpayers’ money is spent by the Executive. Every year the Auditor-General tables reports on the accounts and financial management of all government departments and State Institutions. Heads of departments and institutions are regularly called by this committee to report and account for expenditure. SCOPA can recommend that the National Assembly takes corrective actions if necessary.
The National Assembly (NA) appoints from among its members a number of Portfolio Committees to shadow the work of the various national government departments. There is a Portfolio Committee for each national Ministry and its associated government department/s.
Roles:
-consider Bills; -deal with department budget votes; -oversee the work of the department they are responsible for, and enquire and make recommendations about any aspect of the department, including its structure, functioning and policy.
The work of Committees is not restricted to government. They may investigate any matter of public interest that falls within their area of responsibility.

Mopani TVET College investigates hostels ■
Joe Dreyer
The reign of the informal student accommodation monopoly bosses in Phalaborwa will shortly come to an abrupt end following last week’s exposé on the matter by this publication. In response to our article highlighting the unhealthy living conditions of students attending the Mopani SE TVET College in this town, the management of the college has embarked on physical inspections of these dwellings. In an official response, the media liaison officer for the Mopani TVET College Given Sebashe, said that though the college is not allowed to pay landlords directly for student accommodation, there exists an agreement between the college and identified private service providers. To this extent the private service providers are required to ensure that the students are housed in a safe and secured environment. “In an endeavour to find suitable and acceptable health and safety standards regarding registered students at Mopani SE TVET College, management approached one of the privately owned lodgings during the course of 2018 in preparation for the 2019 Academic Year,” Sebashe stated. “The intention was to ensure that all the enrolled students are housed in safe and secured accommodation. The identified private service provider committed to house students interested as per the agreement. Unfortunately, the students who applied to stay at the above mentioned residence only stayed for two months (January and February) of this current year and thereafter opted for their own preferred private accommodation.” Mopani SE TVET College stated for the record that although they hold the best interest of their students at heart, accommodation contracts cannot be entered into by the college on behalf of the students. “As much as the College has interest in the well-being of the students, the Department of
Higher Education and Training (DHET)’s National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) guidelines are crystal clear with regard to the contract for accommodation that it should be between the students and the private landlords. Hence this College can only play a minimal role.” Paragraph 59 of the NSFAS guidelines emphasise that “under no circumstances may Colleges pay accommodation providers directly. The contracts must be between the students and the providers, and not between the TVET Colleges and providers.” Sebashe continued by saying, “in line with the relevant NSFAS guidelines, as from Monday, the 8th of April this college’s Student Support Services section commenced with its physical verification of privately owned students’ accommodation in an attempt to accurately verify the conditions of these committed itself to locate the accommodations as properties mentioned in the well as ensuring that report and verify the condithe physical/residences tions of the students residing provided are correct as there. per the contract between A student accommodation “As such, Mopani SE TVET College students and NSFAS.” in Appelblaar street. would like to thank the Bulletin for Mopani SE TVET College also bringing this matter to its attention. Granny’s Grumbles - WHITE SHEETS
We were brought up with white sheets and towels. In fact I am pretty certain there were no coloured sheets of any description when I was young. I believe that sheets actually became known in the 16th century but white was the only colour used. During the fifties candy striped sheets arrived in Rhodesia – my mother was horrified – not only her but all her friends as well. According to my mother this type of sheet was only used in houses of ill-repute. Anyway, it appeared that my friends and I had all been sufficiently brainwashed to stick with white sheets (and towels). Upon arriving in Phalaborwa and actually getting a home (albeit a mobile one) all our furniture (including linen) was in storage in Springs. After talking to three shop assistants at three different shops in Phalaborwa I realised that white sheets were obviously not popular in South Africa. At the fourth shop I asked desperately if there was no place where one could find white sheets and I was told to try ……….(this shop was on a corner – where Loods Butchery now operates) who actually ordered white sheets for the local hotel? Off I went and lo and behold yes they did have
a few white sheets which I bought Certainly wasn’t going to let anyone think I had been brought up in a house of ill-repute! The towels were a different thing – even the hotel was using coloured towels so I had to put my prudish thoughts of lowclass ladies aside and join the hoi polloi who were using coloured towels. Apart from the white sheets episode which obviously a lot of my new-found accquaintances found odd, there were many things that “whenwes” thought and did that did not sit well with South Africans and certain things actually appalled them. Those of us who lived in the mobile homes would spend a good few hours over a weekend at the local dump. Why?? Because we couldn’t believe what South Africans were throwing away! Our dump in Salisbury had practically been the same depth for about ten years – very little actually arrived at the dump. Schools were collecting paper, cardboard and plastic. Africans on bicycles with enormous baskets on the front would arrive each month at ones home to buy (for cash) any bottles at all. These were then resold to vendors who bought cooking oil in drums and needed bottles. Also many enterprising ladies were making home-made jams, home-made sauces and juices that needed bottles. Tyres were retreaded until they were down to the wire and then dumped – within a short space of time they were collected and rolled to the nearest shack where they were made into recycled tyre slops. These were very popular with tourists and they came with a lifetime guarantee. Nobody ever heard of a pair of these slops wearing out. The owner of a clothing factory that churned out clothes made of local materials said that when he arrived at the site to dump off-cuts of material he was nearly killed in the rush. Large pieces of hessian were made into various animals – stuffed with anything that had been dumped – legs made out of wire and covered in raffia.
Smaller pieces were made into rag-type dolls – these were all incredibly popular with tourists. The dump was a popular place. The Phalaborwa dump was gold-mine – our first excursion there we sent each member of the family to a different section. My eldest daughter suddenly let out a shriek that could have been heard in Gravelottle. Somebody had dumped at least 200 plastic plant pots – not only was mom an avid gardener but they were made of plastic. All they needed was a wash! That was a really good find, but was nothing to what we were to find a few weeks later. Russells Furniture Store had gone up in flames and it turned out that they had dumped everything that was fire-damaged. That weekend saw most of the “whenwes” at the dump – it was like a social occasion. My husband found a vacuum cleaner with a burnt cable and I found a slightly scorched kettle – with a little attention both in perfect working order. Our compatriots had found all sorts of things that just needed a clean-up and were ready to go. Who needed America? We had found our land of milk (albeit watered-down) and honey. Some things were more than a little strange. A large percentage of the Rhodesians came from Afrikaans-speaking families and suddenly discovered that the locals were laughing at many of their words. Possibly due to the fact that we had virtually been cut off from the world for fifteen years we had not “progressed”. Afrikaans speaking Rhodesians were speaking the original language that the settlers had taken with them and they discovered that their Afrikaans was classified as positively archaic when they arrived here. It became worse when the commandant’s wife was sent to give us all English classes and the Afrikaans ladies argued about the correct words. Fortunately – being a soutie I didn’t have to get involved in any spats regarding who was right and who was wrong! Note: Rhodesians were only allowed to take one thousand Rhodesian dollars per family when they emigrated, so arrived with very little.

SHALOM. On Sunday we celebrated Palm Sunday, for many it was just be another Sunday, but for the true Christian it is a time when we celebrate Jesus’ triumphal ride into Jerusalem. In Jesus many believed He was a Saviour who had come to overthrow the suppressive Roman Empire, in other words a King who would build up an army to wipe out the Romans. So they welcomed Him into Jerusalem as a conqueror, hailing Him by strewing branches and greenery along His path and hailing Him as king in songs of praises and shouts of joy. But alas that was not His mission, His ultimate mission was to turn the people back to God. To restore the relationship between God and the people. He never claimed to be a king, but the Son of God and this irritated the leaders of the Church, His own people, people professing to be godly. He knew what was going to happen to Him and how these very same people would in a short period of time call for Him to be crucified, the leaders in the church would influence them so much that they would believe Christ was evil and had blasphemed, even elevated Himself above the priests. We too can be easily influenced by those with hidden agendas, history has proved this over and over yet we often have learnt little. We need to look to Christ for answers and not to waiver from the truth. God is still in control. Some churches hand out Palm crosses on Sunday as a symbol of remembrance and to be used to remind us of what Christ did for us. We use these crosses when we pray on our own and keep them until Ash Wednesday the following year when we burn them to form the ashes for this ceremony. So this is why we celebrate Palm Sunday in our church. This weekend we will celebrate the most dramatic time in history, the crucification of Christ. Will we ever know exactly what a price He paid for the sins of the world? This is what Christianity is all about, what He did for others He will do for us. Blessings

Lim Uni top the logs after Sunday games ■
Joe Dreyer
The Limpopo Club Hockey League kicked off this weekend on the sand-based astro at Ben Vorster. For some of the more mature players it was a welcome return to the pitch after a lengthy break, but the blistering hot conditions made it difficult for even the local favourites, Tzaneen Club, to manage any really noteworthy performances. After Sunday’s games it was the University of Limpopo who topped the log standings in the Men’s division on three points after winning their first away game by 2 goals to 0 which added the bonus point. Second on the log is Polokwane on 1 point with Tzaneen in third place after these two teams played to a 2-2 draw. Polokwane received the extra point for playing away which separated them from Tzaneen on the log through goal difference. The Badger, Limpopo Development, U/18 IPT and Phalaborwa teams completed the standings on zero points each after having a dismal start to the new season. The Phalaborwa Hyenas are
notoriously strong attackers and with the season only just beginning, it would be foolish to write them off just yet. In the Women’s Division the University of Limpopo again tops the log standings on three points with Tzaneen in second spot also on three and only behind the Uni-girls by way of goal difference. Levubu lies securely in third place also on three points while the Duchess, Masters, Phalaborwa and Bosveld fill out the bottom of the log. Phalaborwa having suffered a 4-1 defeat to Tzaneen in the closing match of the day after their star keeper, the notoriously impenetrable Alana Troger, suffered from what is commonly referred to in the sport as “a very bad day.” The next round of the Club League will be played on the 28th of April on the water-based astro at Stanford Lake College which is sure to test the fitness levels of every player in the field. Not

only is the water-based pitch faster than the sand-based, but the altitude upon which it is situated at Stanford Lake College will play a deciding role.

Record Dirt Dash for Tzaneen Care Group ■
Joe Dreyer
The annual Dirt Dash was huge this year. Held at its usual spot, Magoebaskloof Adventures on the Georges Valley route, a record total of 71 teams entered for the event which brought the total number of participants to a staggering 426 brave mudslingers. This is the Tzaneen Care Group’s biggest fundraiser event and helps generate the necessary proceeds that will be used for the improvement and expansion of the Tzaneen Cancer Care Centre. The centre aims to effectively offer respite and palliative care for cancer patients through the purchase of medical equipment as well as implementation of programmes beneficial to cancer awareness. Unlike the previous two, this year’s event was held amid a bright and sunny sky with the slightest of chill in the air to offer some relief to the not-so well prepared athletes on the course. The main sponsor of the 2019 Dirt Dash was Smit & Kie who also had a team competing this year – the aptly named Mind over Mudder. Dave Protter was on site to ensure that any and all medical assistance was on hand if needed while DA Councillor Pierre Cronje egged on the participants as the MC for the day. Teams from as far as Phalabor-
wa and Louis Trichardt made the trek to take on the infamous obstacle course which most use as training for events such as the Iron Man. “This year we also decided to give other charities the opportunity to some funds,” explained Melissa Strydom of Tzaneen Care Group. “Vendors were SPCA, SAVF, Lions Club and Rotary Tzaneen Club who almost all sold out! Red Plate and Heinricht Drewes also formed part of the vendors with Panarotti’s who donated R400 with their spinning wheel. All in all it was a fantastic day for the needy members of this community!” Each obstacle on the course was sponsored by a local individual or business. This year the obstacles were sponsored by Fabric & Décor, Rodney Cooper Estates, Maxim’s, Forest View Cabins, Alesia Boerdery, Paint Pot Tzaneen, Build It, Mahlahla, Allegraine, Manordrift Farm, BF Distributors, Ben Vorster Gym and Panarotti’s. “From the bottom of our hearts the Tzaneen Care Group would like to thank every business who opened their hearts and supported us to organize this amazing event and who contributed directly to the success! Also to each person, team entrant and supporter, you all went out of your way to attend this very special day.”
