■ Joe Dreyer The term once in a Blue Moon suggests something happens very rarely. So, how often do Blue Moons occur? There are two ways of calculating the date of a Blue Moon namely a Seasonal Blue Moon which is the third Full Moon in an astronomical season with four Full Moons (versus the usual three) and the Monthly Blue Moon which is the second Full Moon in a month with two Full Moons. In the 1 100 years between 1550 and 2650, there are 408 seasonal Blue Moons and 456 monthly Blue Moons. This means that either Blue Moon occurs roughly every two or three years, although the monthly ones are a little more frequent than the seasonal ones.

Once in an Orange moon?
FAR NORTH
F A R
N O R T H
In many Northern Hemisphere cultures, each month’s Full Moon is named after a specific seasonal or natural phenomena, for example, Harvest Moon. When there are two Full Moons in a month, the second one doesn’t have a proper name. The term Blue Moon has over time become a placeholder name for the extra Full Moon. This way, the other 12 Full Moons keep their rightful place in relation to the solstices and equinoxes. This was the Blue Moon rising over Tzaneen on Saturday evening as captured by Joe Dreyer.
Claude Trenchly “Street” ■ Joe Dreyer The horrid route around the back of Tzaneng Mall along Claude Wheatley Street has now become even more treacherous. Not only have calls by the Tzaneen community been ignored by the Greater Tzaneen Municipality concerning the illegal parking of the taxis at this taxi rank, but calls to have the road resurfaced have also fallen on ears deafened by political appointments and greed. A contractor dug a trench from one side of the road to the other in an effort to improve drainage to the storm water drain. This was a few
months ago. The result was absolute traffic chaos. Eventually the project was completed – or so it seemed until the entire section was up earthed again a week ago. No notice, no warning. So now, between the sanctimonious taxi drivers on one side and the Mariana Trench on the other, motorists have only three-quarters of a lane through which to navigate the gauntlet of daily commute. “I have not seen the construction which you are referring to, but I would imagine that it is to improve storm water drainage at that section of the road?” said Neville
Ndlala, spokesperson for the GTM. “I will check with our team and revert back to you.” We also asked him for more information on the reason why the taxi rank has not yet been moved to a more suitable area as he explained eight months ago. He simply answered with “there is still no progress”. Perhaps the GTM could break down what is left of their R1 million waste of money (the concrete palisade fencing which has been removed and repurposed by the hawkers and the homeless) to provide adequate parking for the taxi rank on the opposite side of the current site?

This photograph was taken by one of our readers while out and about town earlier this week. It highlights a number of things including poor quality control measures by whichever contractor was awarded the tender to brand state vehicles. It also points rather shockingly to the fact that the police officers were oblivious to the error even after it was pointed out to them. Does this, however, have any bearing on the investigative prowess of the SAPS detectives? If you spot any discrepancies as in this photograph above, please send them to joe@bulletin.us.com or via WhatsApp to 072 930 1462.

Start with a cup of Joe ■ Joe Dreyer A very big man welcomed a small crowd gathered in the foyer at Mediclinic Tzaneen on Tuesday evening to officially launch the Dulcé coffee shop at the hospital. In attendance was hospital manager, Zane Fanie, Dr Ig van Rensburg and of course the owner of the Dulcé chain and former Springbok rugby legend, Kobus Wiese. The Dulcé café is the very first in Limpopo and is owned and managed by franchisee Brenda Alberts, who is herself well-known in the local business community. In his very brief address to the attendees, Wiese remarked that one need not be ill or in need of medical attention in order to enjoy a cup of the finest coffee in South Africa. Marketing and PR Manager for the group, Brigid Jaucot said that Dulcé Café is elated at the prospects of this new venture. “We are very excited to have gone into this partnership with our franchisee,
Cop arrested after tavern shooting ■ Jan Mafetsa The police have launched investigations after a police officer shot two brothers at his tavern at Makoxa village outside Giyani. Following the incident the police officer was arrested along with ten members of the community who, after the incident burnt the tavern to the ground. Other businesses belonging to the police officer and four vehicles which were parked in those properties were also set alight and destroyed. Limpopo police spokesperson, Moatshe Ngoepe said that as the police, they are warning members of the force to desist from being involved in such businesses.
“It is against the law for members of the police force to run businesses they know they are not allowed to be involved in. Nine suspects were arrested in connection with the burning of properties and were due to appear in court on Tuesday at the Giyani magistrate court. The victims were brothers residing in the village.” Ngoepe added that the police had launched investigations into the matter. The father of the victims said that as the family they were still traumatised by what had happened and appealed to police to guard against people who are involved in the running of such businesses while in their service. Further details were not available by the time of going to print.

The Mopani District Municipality seems to be shaking off the drowsiness of the elections and will finally look at solving the water crisis in the outlying areas of their jurisdiction. A sum of R14 million has apparently been allocated to the elucidating the water calamity in the latest draft budget which was presented to the public for scrutiny. During the meetings at Relela and Lesedi clusters on Friday, residents heard that the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) had been allocated the sum of R14 million through the Water and Sanitation Infrastructure

The GTM had been allocated the sum of R179 616 for the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) projects in Tzaneen and it is to be used as follows; R35 million goes to Lenyenye and Thabina bulk Water Supply, Ritavi Water Supply will receive R22 million, Nkowankowa Sewage Plant has been allocated R3 379 million, Lephepane Bulk Water will receive R15 million, R83 029 goes to Thapane Water Reticulation and Rehabilitation while Tours Bulk Water gets R20 408. The total amount for the MIG for the district stands at R454 million and it is said to be adopted soon.

the ANC were still visible in some areas, in most areas in Tzaneen streets had been cleared of posters. “The other reason for the posters to be removed earlier was that they should be restored so they could be used in other elections such as the local government elections set for 2021. The problem is that if they are not removed in time, the other organisations could remove them and use them for themselves. Since it is no longer illegal to remove these posters, other parties could save money and take the boards down and reuse them.” By Tuesday contractors were working on ridding the billboards of the advertisements of political parties such as the ANC and the EFF which could be seen along some of the major roads in the region.

The posters of many political parties which were hanged almost everywhere along the streets of Tzaneen and its townships, were removed shortly after the celebrations for the elections ended. The reason behind this move is due to parties wanting to avoid penalties for not removing their posters. It is said the duration posters on the lamp post is determined by the municipalities. They differ according to by-laws. A resident of Lenyenye who was involved in the hanging of the posters pre-election time, said they were instructed to remove them by party seniors. Failing to remove the posters on time would result in the municipalities removing the boards and the parties losing out on the deposits. Though in Lenyenye posters of

Welgevonden murder update ■
A helping hand for Mona
Jeff Jackson
A 3-year old toddler was killed by an unknown number of dogs in the backyard of a tavern in Zone 1 Mahwelereng outside Mokopane over the weekend. The police said that the 36-year old mother of the toddler had taken her child along with her to a local liquor tavern on Saturday evening. It is reported that she had laid her toddler to sleep in a room adjacent to the tavern and that sometime during the evening, the child awoke and went outside in search of the mother. It is believed that while the toddler was walking in the yard, the dogs attacked the child. Patrons from the tavern who heard the screams of the child, ran to the rescue. The child sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital. The child was declared dead on arrival. SAPS Provincial Commissioner in Limpopo, Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba has condemned the killing of the toddler by the dogs and urged members of the community, especially mothers and guardians are advised to put child safety first. “Taking a child to the liquor outlet, is totally uncalled for and a practice that should cease immediately in order to avoid these types of incidents from occurring,” concluded Ledwaba.

A 40-year old suspect has been arrested in the Louis Trichardt area in connection with the murder of Annette Kennealy (51) on the farm Welgevonden on Monday evening. The police stated on Wednesday morning that a manhunt was launched for the suspects who brutally stabbed to death the 51year old and this led to the arrest of one man 48 hours later. It is alleged that Kennealy, who was staying with her employee, was attacked by unknown suspects at this farm. Her family members were concerned after numerous attempts to contact her on her cell phone failed. One of her family members went to the farm to investigate and upon arrival found Kennealy lying on the floor of the home in a pool of her own blood. She appeared to have been bludgeoned to death with a hammer. The whereabouts of her employee, Kenny Ramatshimbila, was not known at the time of going to print and the motive behind the attack has still to be established. The police have appealed to Ramatshimbila to contact the Makhado police station or his nearest police station to assist in the investigations into this horrific crime. Though Police investigations are still continuing, the arrested suspect will appear in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s court soon.

Being diagnosed with one of the dreaded diseases and having no medical aid is a catastrophe given the abysmal functioning of state hospitals in Limpopo. Mona Runkel (69) from Haenertsburg was diagnosed with lymph cancer almost a year ago. Mona was shunted for months from the Van Velden state hospital in Tzaneen to the Mankweng state hospital with little to no results. The Haenertsburg community as well as the local Care Association got involved. A benefit dinner was held to raise funds for treatment. This resulted in an appointment with Polokwane oncologist, Dr Malan, where Mona underwent various tests. From there she was referred to specialist surgeon Dr Wreyford. He decided to operate but Mona was first referred to specialist physician Dr Burger to ascertain whether her heart and lungs would cope with a major operation. Dr Burger gave her the all clear and Mona had the operation. The benefit dinner, although successful, only covered part of the R93, 000.00 bills.
When Dr Wreyford removed the stitches 10 days after the operation, he suggested a mammogram and radiation which would have cost a further R142, 000.00 if conducted privately. From the time Mona was diagnosed, a member of the community had been keeping Melissa Strydom from the Tzaneen Care Group informed. A discussion at The Red Plate restaurant between owner Colleen Venter and her family resulted in the Tzaneen Care Group being approached for help. Melissa together with Yasmeen Moosa and the rest of the angels within the TCG moved with the speed of lightning. Mona left for Johannesburg on Monday this week for treatment at the state-run oncology department of the Helen Joseph Hospital (formerly JG Strijdom) in Auckland Park. Meanwhile another fund raiser in the form of raffle tickets with prizes was organised by a member of the community who wishes to remain anonymous. R15, 000.00 was raised. The lucky winners were drawn on Tuesday evening - accommodation at SanWild tented camp to Adrian Lucas; accommodation at Stanford Lake Lodge to Tammy van Emmenis; accommodation at Viewpoint Guest House to Amy Selfe; accommodation at Mountain Fly Fishing to Kim Hughes; accommodation at Pennefather to Yke Osmer; a R500 food voucher from the Red Plate restaurant to Tanya Coetze.
Missing teen sought ■
Jeff Jackson
A search is currently underway for a missing teen in the Giyani area. The 17-year old Fumani Kevin Chabalala from Siyandhani village was out with a group of friends over the weekend at a tavern in the village. His friends told police that they left him at the tavern when they returned home and they have not yet seen or heard from him. Kevin never returned home and cannot be located at his friends and relatives. He was last seen wearing a pair of black trousers with a maroon, T-shirt and black All Stars. Anyone with information that can assist to reunite Kevin with his family should urgently contact Captain Mabunda on 0827290343 or or crime stop number 0860010111 or crime line sms 32211 or should contact the nearest police station.
Job seller caught ■
Jeff Jackson
Tinyiko Dister Mathye (48), was convicted for selling Urban Security Company jobs by the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court this past Friday. During May 2017, the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit received information about an Urban Security Company supervisor who was selling jobs to aspiring jobseekers. An undercover operation was conducted and Mathye was arrested soon after she had accepted a R300 bribe. Many victims who also paid money to Mathye in order to secure employment came forward with information after hearing of her arrest in the media. Mathye was out on R1 000 bail until she was convicted on 31 counts of corruption and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment wholly suspended for five years on condition that she is not convicted for similar offence during the suspension period. Furthermore, she was ordered to pay back the victims money amounting to R18 100 in monthly instalments until the 31st of December 2019.
Pupil kills pupil ■
Jeff Jackson
In a shocking sign of the times, a 15-year old pupil stabbed to death a 16-year classmate at a school in Mankweng outside Polokwane. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at Robert Macbaka Secondary school in the Ga-Mamabolo area. The name of the deceased is David Metlape who was completing his eighth grade and the name of the perpetrator has not been released. It is alleged that the two pupils had a fight while playing within the school premises and subsequently, the suspect produced a sharp instrument and stabbed the victim before fleeing from the scene. The victim was taken to the hospital for medical treatment but was certified dead on arrival. The Police were notified, responded immediately and a manhunt for the suspect ensued until he was arrested at his hideout in the area. The preliminary investigations led the Police to a spot where the murder weapon was hidden on top of a small hill outside the village. The suspect will appear in the Mankweng Magistrate court soon on a charge of murder. SAPS Provincial Commissioner in Limpopo Lt Gnl Nneke Ledwaba has condemned in the strongest terms, the acts of violence which are still prevalent at some schools in the Province. The Police investigations are still continuing.

Art meets gin in Modjadjiskloof ■ Bulletin The Old Packhouse Distillery is five kms outside Modjadjiskloof. Once a pack house for fruit, it was turned into a distillery some two years ago. Mark Dando, in charge of marketing and sales, conducted eight months of research and development before venturing into this craft market. Mark works together with his brother-in-law, Günther Obojkovits who is his master distiller, and three staffers. Mark took his first batch of gin to the Blueberry Festival in Haenertsburg two years ago and sold out within two hours. They are Blueberry, Valencia, Crystal and Moringa clear. The two new additions are Mandarin and Moringa Pink. There were 30 South African craft gin makers when the Old Packhouse started. Now there are 180 and it’s a lot more competitive. Mark says, “If you’re not established, you won’t survive.” There are now also more craft gin makers in Limpopo notably in Phalaborwa and Polokwane. Granny’s Grumbles - FEET OF CLAY
“Feet of clay” is used to describe an unexpected flaw or vulnerable point in the character of a hero or any admired person. This phrase originates from the bible (Daniel 2.31.32) and has become common over the years. I heard the phrase used on the radio a short while ago and got to thinking about how many of our heroes or icons fall flat and ruin our dreams. Take Elvis Presley – how many of us as teenagers were smitten by his songs and good looks. He was only 42 years of age when he died– grossly overweight and addicted to prescription pills. What a let-down for all of his ardent fans – including me!
And what about everybody’s darling – Marilyn Monroe – supposedly she committed suicide at the age of thirty-six due to an overdose of barbiturates -although to be honest there has always been speculation about the actual cause of her death. Unfortunately the list of famous people with feet of clay is an enormous one. I always found Michael Jackson a little weird but I am only one of few – he was a hit throughout the rest of the world and had only recently celebrated his 50th birthday when he died of an overdose of prescription drugs. Whitney Houston only made 48 when she expired due to an overdose of cocaine and of course Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin – both liked and admired by the somewhat younger crowd both died from an overdose of drugs at the tender age of 25. The list is endless but I shall not bore you with more facts – you are possibly wondering why on earth I am rambling on about stars of yesteryear. For two reasons actually -….and in both case I was so smitten by the persons concerned that I could hardly believe what they did to practically break my heart.. The first one was Guy Mitchell - only persons over 70 will know who I’m talking about – that includes all the ladies at Macadamia. He brought out hits like “Heartaches by the Number” and “Singing the Blues” during the middle and late fifties. At the age of sixteen I was besotted by him and had managed to acquire every song he had ever recorded, Some eighteen years later I had returned to Salisbury after spending years
in various little dorpies and one morning happened to hear on the radio that my hero was actually going to appear at a nightclub/restaurant within the next couple of weeks. I could hardly wait to contact an old friend of mine who had shared my enthusiasm for good old Guy. Since our respective husbands were both on a six-week call-up we decided to make up a gang of ladies who shared our passion for the singer. By the time we got ourselves together it turned out that the opening night was already sold out but we managed to get tickets for the following evening. In retrospect I’m glad that we missed the first evening – the following day the front page of our daily newspaper trumpeted the fact that “world famous Guy Mitchell got booed off stage and his contract cancelled after appearing too inebriated to climb the steps to the stage” My family had a field day teasing me about my erstwhile idol. The second man with feet of clay who practically broke my heart (and many others) was Hansie Cronje. I am an avid cricket enthusiast and he was my hero. He could do no wrong. When the news first broke I refused to believe it and remember saying something like “I’d put my head on a block before I would believe that – some reporter trying to make a name for himself”. Lucky nobody took me up on that. Judging by the amount of divorces in recent times (in spite of the fact that marriage is no longer considered a necessity for starting a family) I believe that they got it right in the bible. People with “feet of clay” are alive and well in every aspect of our society.
“When you’re young, you’re shocked by the amount of people who have feet of clay. Older, you’re surprised by the number of people who don’t” - Malcolm Forbes
Social
Hoe kan ‘n dominee so iets doen? Mag die Here julle seen. Blessings.

Introducing the new Kuga ST ■
Bulletin Motoring
In light of the recent Kuga fire-scare saga which placed the world’s oldest motor manufacturer in the media spotlight for all the wrong reasons, Ford have in an attempt to save face, launched a newer, slicker Kuga ST line. We took a look at some of the online reviews and were very pleasantly surprised. The petrolheads from Cars.co.za took one of the new Ford babies out for a bit of trip around the block. Here is what they had to say of the experience. While ST versions of the Focus and Fiesta have made Ford’s performance badge a household name and inspired legions of fans in the petrolhead community, this is NOT an ST version of the Kuga. Instead, the ST Line badge denotes aesthetic upgrades only, even if the 2.0T AWD’s suspension has received a light ST treatment. The ST-Line spec is designed to appeal to those looking for something that looks like a high-performance vehicle. It’s a rather bold move to apply it to a rather large SUV – some may even regard it as counter-intuitive – but it’s a tactic the German brands have been using successfully for decades. Audi offers the S-Line trim, MercedesBenz the AMG Line, and a number of BMW derivatives bear M badges. Size-wise, the Kuga sits roughly in the middle of the family car market, which, given the relative age of Ford’s platform (7 years), is quite to be expected. However, it is still large enough to provide generous cabin space for passengers (it can comfortably seat 4 adults, while 3 kids will happily fit side-by-side on the rear bench), plus significant load space for luggage, bicycles and groceries, without feeling cumbersome to manoeuvre. An electric tailgate is now standard on all Kuga derivatives and includes a leg-swing opening function, a feature that allows for hands-free operation of the tailgate (even if the car is locked), as long as the key is in your pocket. The function is activated by swinging your foot under the rear of the car to open the tailgate. Two engines are available for the ST-Line derivatives. We tested the 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbopetrol, while a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbodiesel is also available. With power and torque figures of 177 kW and 340 Nm, the Kuga feels well motivated and eager. It’s not a particularly fast car, but in-gear acceleration is strong and there’s more than enough oomph to ensure the experience is never boring. The peak torque figure is available nice and low down in the rev range (from 2 000 rpm to 4 500 rpm), making it a particularly easy to get the best out of the motor. The car cruises comfortably on the motorway and the 6-speed transmission ensures the engine speed remains low at highway speeds. However, the average fuel consumption is potentially the Achilles heel of the package. Ford claims an average figure of 8.6 L/100km, but we saw a worst indicated figure of about 12 L/100km. After a 200 km drive on open roads, the readout dropped to 8.7 L/100 km, but neither of those figures is particularly impressive, as the car was never driven with more than 2 adults and light luggage, or 4 adults with no luggage. Perhaps the diesel might be the better option to reduce running costs. With 132 kW and 400 Nm, it won’t be boring to drive, and that extra torque will prove handy when towing or fully loaded. And importantly, on paper at least, fuel consumption is claimed to be 40% better than the petrol motor. If you would like to read the full reviews on the new Kuga ST line, head over to www.cars.co.za or better yet, why not pop in to BB Motors Ford and take one of these babies out for a spin?
Fit more into life.
Now with a longer wheelbase and 7 seats, there’s little more you’ll long for in a car. A 3rd row of seats comes standard across the range and with this much room, trips to destinations near and far will be extremely comfortable. So, wherever life takes you, you’re guaranteed a great journey in this one. To find out more about New Tiguan Allspace, visit Lannie Motors Tzaneen.

Three Unicorns at Provincials ■ Joe Dreyer Three young Unicorns excelled in their various sporting disciplines over past week to be awarded their provincial colours for biathlon and gymnastics. Dario Wasley competed in the boys U/10-11 category despite him only being nine years old. Earlier this year he participated in his very first Levels gala at the South African Nationals and despite his rivals being up to two years his senior, Wasley managed to place 12th in the 100m breaststroke and 10th in the 50m breast stroke in the finals. Two siblings, Retha and Marius Mostert, showed off their skills in Polokwane at the Zani’s Gymnastics Academy Limpopo qualifying rounds which took place on the 17th of May. Retha specialises in rhythmic and she performed well in two disciplines at the qualifiers, namely free dance and dance with an apparatus. She will be traveling to Thabazimbi tomorrow (Friday) to participate in the Limpopo championships. Marius is taking part in the Men’s Artistic gymnastics (MAG) Level one. Here they must do four routines which each counts out of 10 points (Floor routine, Vault, P-bars and High bar). Marius has now qualified during the club competition at the Zanis Gymnastics Academy club in Polokwane. He will be taking part in the Limpopo Provincial competition in Thabazimbi.
Mopani in sig ■ Joe Dreyer

We’re all squared - for now ■
Joe Dreyer
On Monday afternoon Stanford Lake College hosted the Red Army from Tzaneen for three rounds of exciting hockey action. Ben Vorster have long since been one of the Badgers’ closest rivals and with these two schools being the first in the region to sport an astro pitch each, these were sure to be tough encounters which would serve as the runup for Stanford heading into this weekend’s games against the revered Beaulieu College. The First team Girls took to the turf at around 16:00 that afternoon. The game was off to a somewhat rocky start as both teams seemed to struggle to find their footing. Ben Vorster was hungry for a win, but the Badgers were unwilling to satiate that appetite and so for the first half of the four-chukka match, there were no goals or noteworthy attempts to score. At the start of the third chukka this changed as both teams shifted gear. The Reds were the first to up the pace and there were some amazing runs down the side lines by the Ben Vorster wings which should have amounted to points on the scoreboard, had it not been for the impeccable Badger defensive line-up. Ben Vorster’s centre forward fired off a rocket of a shot at the net which was miraculously warded off by the lightning
quick Melike Naude in the keeper’s padding. The three short corners conceded by Stanford’s girls in blue - which should have seen the Reds lead by at least two goals - seemed to be the wakeup call needed for the Badgers to choose “make” instead of break. Kate Wood was well positioned in the top D to pick up on a wayward shot at goal and Babe Ruth it into the net to place the hosts in the lead. Laurencia Van Dyk, the Vossie-keeper was caught completely off-guard and even managed a grin at Wood’s very impressive shot. The Reds fired back in the form of their centre forward, the extreme ly nippy Milane

Smit who let loose at the Badger keeper a number of times but could not kink the armour. One of Smit’s goal attempts was perceived to have hit the back of the board, but it was denied. Time was running out and with just two minutes left in the fourth chukka, it would be the local hurdles

star, Lia Revelas who nailed the final goal in the Vossie coffin and secure a 2-0 Badger home-win. The boys braved the icy cold mountain air just after 17:00 that afternoon for the First team showdown and the blanket-clad spectators were not disappointed. The first two chukkas saw neither side scoring any goals despite some good breaks and some remarkable shots at goal from impossible angles by the strikers. The Boys’ game went much the same way as the fairer ones’ before them with the two teams so evenly matched it took 45 minutes for the goal-tally to open with a big hit from Vossie Heinrich Ackerman which sped past keeper Owen Venter in the dying moments of the third chukka. Artwell Mokgoloboto would add another to the board to hand Ben Vorster a hard-fought 2-0 victory. Both teams will now go back to the drawing board and revaluate their finishes ahead of their next encounters. From the side-lines it appeared as though despite the obvious skills of the individual players and some brilliantly executed set-pieces, much is needed to be done to ensure that short-corners are converted into goals.
