It was the fourth time that the Woodley’s had to endure the trauma of a home invasion on their property just off the R71 between Tzaneen and Letsitele. In fact it had occurred so often that they have made peace with terror-attacks being a “part of life and we deal with it as we go”. Not enough is being done to proactively prevent these attacks which are becoming more and more frequent. The Tzaneen police are making very little arrests in these matters and their investigations seem to yield even less results. A 56-year old man valiantly defended his elderly parents during a terrifying home invasion on Monday morning at their family home outside Tarentaalrand. Ian Woodley (56) and his mother, Suzanne (79) had been up late, lounging in the living room. At around 01:30 that morning they retired to their bedrooms. “I had just switched off my light and climbed into bed when I was startled by an immense crash coming from the living room side of the house. I heard glass shatter as it hit the floor and I knew that we were being attacked,” recalled Ian. “I grabbed my phone and dialled for help, I couldn’t get through and so I ran to the kitchen to arm myself and prepared for the worst.” In the meantime, Suzanne, who had also been startled by the loud bang had climbed out of bed to investigate. Initially she thought it may have been her son who had dropped something in the kitchen. “I took my phone and peered out of my bedroom door. That’s when Ian came up to me and said there is trouble, we had better get to the bathroom.” Ian woke his father, Sonny (89) and rushed the pair to the bathroom before approaching the lounge, armed with a kitchen knife and a machete from the pantry. As he entered the narrow passageway leading to the front of the house he heard a window in one of the bedrooms shattering. Then another window on the opposite end of the house and still a third window was smashed in one of the guest bedrooms - intruders were entering the house from all sides simultaneously. “Chaos rained down around us as windows started shattering all around the house. I could hear the rocks hit the floor inside the rooms and I heard the guys running outside the house. The first guy who broke the window in the lounge was busy removing the smaller bits of glass from the frame in order to climb through, when I ran at him and screamed for him to get out. He was armed with a machete and knobkerrie but he backed off briefly. I could see he was surprised.” At the same time a second intruder was climbing through the window in one of the rooms closest to the bathroom where his parents were hiding. Ian turned and ran to the room and chased the second assailant back through the window. The first intruder seized the opportunity and climbed through the window into the lounge. He started towards the bathroom but was confronted by a knife wielding Ian in the passage way. “The guy looked at me for a few seconds and then grabbed one of our bookshelves and tried to ram me with it. It was too heavy for him to move, but I thought to myself this was a clever idea and so I toppled the bookshelf over. It wedged in between the walls of the narrow passage and acted as a barrier separating him from me.” The bookshelf was too broad for the intruder to jump over and the

backing board too slippery from him to climb onto and risk receiving a blow from Ian. “Suddenly he started hurtling ornaments and ashtrays and basically anything he could find at me. He grabbed the bricks from one of our other makeshift bookshelves in the lounge and threw those at my head. When he ran out of ammo, he started breaking chairs and coffee tables and throwing the pieces at me. The guy went berserk!” By this time Ian had been running between the passage and the two bedrooms fending off attacks coming at him from three sides simultaneously. Between dodging missiles from the front and assailants at his flanks, Ian sustained a number of cuts to his arms, hands and face. Suzanne had managed to contact the Letsitele Neighbourhood watch and a number of friends who all sounded the alarm. “We shouted at the guys that the police on their way, but they seemed little phased

by this and the attacks persisted. It was only when they saw the lights of the neighbourhood watch vehicles that they immediately jumped out through the windows and ran off.” According to the Woodley’s, the entire attack lasted no more than 20 minutes. Suzanne recalled that the neighbourhood watch men arrived at their home in less than 13 minutes after she made the call. The three intruders fled into the bushes and a search was immediately conducted ,but they managed to escape. Ian was treated in hospital for his wounds but was back home that same evening. The motive for the attack is not clear and though one can only speculate, it would appear, as in the case of Ben Pretorius at Mapietskop, that these attacks could more likely be acts of intimidation rather than house robbery. The intruders in the last attack were young men which the Woodley’s guess to be in their twenties judg-
ing by their voices. Their faces were covered by balaclavas or masks and were rather brazen in their actions. This was the fourth time in the last 28 years that this family suffered an attack on their home. They recalled the first attack having occurred roughly four or five years after they moved into the house. July 2017 was the second attack. This time the intruders entered the farmstead in broad daylight at 09:45 and tied up both Ian and Sonny before dragging Suzanne into the house where they assaulted and bound her. In this instance a shotgun and three cell phones were stolen before they fled. The third attack on the Woodley’s occurred at the start of this year when a group of intruders invaded their home in January. In this instance Ian was assaulted as he tried to defend his parents. Nothing was stolen. What is shocking is that in all the cases above, no arrests have yet been made and no feedback has been giv-

en to the victims on the progress of the investigations. The Woodley’s were attacked four times and Ben Pretorius’ farm at Mapietskop suffered eight robberies in the space of just six months and yet there are no arrests and no further information. In contrast, three doctors were assaulted and wounded at their residences on the grounds of the Letaba Hospital and the very next day a high-powered delegation which included the Minister of Police and the Minister of Health accompanied by an SABC camera crew travel to the hospital to investigate the scene. A reward is offered for information which could lead to the arrest of the suspects and the crime is labelled an atrocity. What about the Woodley’s and others like the Pretorius’ or the Westley’s or the Wilson’s and the Nel’s? What about the countless others Minister Bheke Cele?

“Those are not our Guard trampled by elephant lions” – SANParks ■ Joe Dreyer
■ Joe Dreyer The lions that were spotted around the premises of the Foskor mine in Phalaborwa did not escape from the Kruger National Park. National and some local media outlets sensationalised a pride of around 14 lions that were spotted in the vicinity of the mining community as having escaped from the Kruger. SANParks have denied this statement saying that the 14 lions formed part of a roaming pride which has not escaped from either the Kruger National Park, or any of the adjacent private reserves. It is believed that this pride has been residing in the Phalaborwa area for a number of years and that they seem to move along the Selati River system which is most likely why they have always been spotted near the premises of Foskor or Palabora mining companies. It is because of this fact that SANParks have cautioned it would be unwise to introduce these lions into the existing lion population as prides are extremely territorial. The disease status of these lions are also not known and the risk should therefore be avoided. “Those lions originate from the Grietjie-area which now forms part of the Kruger’s property,” said one long-time resident of Phalaborwa. “There have always been lions and other wild animals in the Phalaborwa area which is part of what makes our town so unique. Those of us who have lived here our entire lives know and love this aspect of living here.”
Elephants, hippos and even the occasional leopard are regular sights in Phalaborwa. There have been a number of incidents related to wild animal and human confrontation in the past too. In October of 1998, a German tourist, Rita Hahn, was killed instantly by an elephant bull while playing golf with her daughter at the Hans Merensky Country Club. In March 2005 a security guard was mauled by lions near the Kruger National Park gate in Phalaborwa, and his remains discovered near the Kruger Park Spar complex the following morning. During the last three decades there have been many reports of pets disappearing from residential properties near the Hendrik van Eck (now Kruger Park) airfield. In fact, it was finally discovered in the late nineties that a leopard had made his home in the area and the pets were easy prey.
The family of the security guard trampled to death by an elephant bull on the premises of Foskor mine in Phalaborwa last week are allegedly claiming financial compensation from the mine. According to reports, they were not satisfied with the security on the mine and therefor want to be compensated as the deceased was the only breadwinner in his household. He had four children, the last of which his wife had only just given birth to a few weeks prior to his death. Eric Kgatla (45), a security guard employed by private contractor Samson and Reuben Security to guard the Zirconia plant on the mine, was found dead at around 04:00 on Saturday morning. It is believed that he was patrolling the grounds at the time and that he was found a distance away from his guard
house. International news agencies, in an effort to attract visitors to their websites, have in the meantime romanticized the incident by claiming that Kgatla was “protecting the miners from a pride of lions that had escaped from the Kruger National Park”. In reality this is most likely not the case as one of the surviving family members stated in an interview that he most likely left his guard house to go to the toilet when the surprise encounter with the animal occurred. A colleague that was also on shift with Kgatla said that he heard the sound of an elephant outside the guard house and he ran for safety. This is allegedly when he realized that his partner was not in the guard room. The deceased’s body was recovered behind the guard house. He will be buried this coming Saturday. At the time of going to print it was not clear whether the elephant in ques-
tion had escaped from the Kruger, or whether it was one of the many wild animals which often roam the premise. In a similar story, a father is mourning the death of his toddler after the two year old boy was mauled by a leopard on that same Friday evening. It is reported that 2-year old Courtney Ntimane and his mother Cebile Nuku had travelled from their home in Bushbukridge to the Kruger Park to visit father and husband, Isaiah Ntimane (35) who is employed by the park. They were visiting him at his cottage in the staff quarters when a leopard attacked the child while they were enjoying a braai that evening. The animal scaled the fence and disappeared but was allegedly later tracked down and killed in order to prevent it from harming other people. The incident was confirmed by the KNP spokesperson, Ike Paahla.
Learner crashes into learners ■ Roelof de Jonge A Grade 12 pupil from Mohlatlego Machaba High School in Ga-Motupa near Tzaneen, who was allegedly late for a Sepedi exam, ran over a group of fellow learners on Wednesday the 5th of June. The 18-year old grade 12 learner, who is also the president of the school’s Student Representative Committee, apparently borrowed the vehicle from his father. The speeding vehicle injured nine of the pupils whilst Koketjo Raholane died upon arrival at the hospital. They were
all waiting to write exam later that day. According to the school’s principal, Emanuel Motshinye, teachers from the school rushed to the scene to assist the injured grade 8 pupils. He said the teachers then took the learners to various hospitals in the area. Motshinye further stated that the pupils were all gathered together just outside the school’s premises when the incident occurred. They were waiting for the school to start as they were also going to write exams later that day. According to Col Moatshe Ngoepe, provincial spokesperson for the SAPS in Lim-
popo, a case of culpable homicide was opened against the driver of the vehicle and a police investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident. The MEC for the Limpopo Department of Education, Ms Polly Boshielo, extended her condolences to the families of the learners. “This is no easy matter for the families and the school community. No amount of words can ever soothe the pain as a result of this accident. Our department has accordingly dispatched the psycho social unit team to conduct the necessary counselling of this tragic incident.”

Mandela Park pleads for running water ■ Roelof de Jonge

‘Residents of Mandela Park in Kgapane, received two water tanks on Human Rights Day on Saturday the 21st of March this year. There is no running water for households in the area and these residents have to collect water from a nearby stream for their daily needs. These water tanks were organized by Desireé van der Walt, DA Member of Parliament for Public Service and Administration, and handed over by DA provincial leader for Limpopo, Jacques Smalle. According to Van der Walt, when the two tanks of 5 000 litres each were handed over, it was filled up by the DA. The village falls under ANC governance and since then these tanks have never been refilled since. This allegedly is because the ANC refuses to refill the tanks as they were donated by the DA and therefore considered to be this party’s responsibility. “The irony of the matter is that the village is named after Nelson Mandela who was in many ways the bastion of freedom and equality for all in this country,” said Van der Walt. “But despite this, the very party meant to ensure Madiba’s goals are brought to fruition has neglected these residents, yet the residents still view the ANC as their liberators.” She further stated that the DA will once again ensure that these tanks are filled with water, but she is however determined to lay a case of negligence at the Human Rights Commission and report the matter to Parliament. Lawrence Lebea, a DA member and resident at Mandela Park, alleged that the ANC councilor, Stephen Kgatla, is never to be seen when needed and negligence to fill the water tanks is just one of the many incidents hampering this community. Van der Walt and Lebea both agreed

bushes surrounding the stream, but it is also not healthy to use this water. We cook the water to kill the germs, even if we are afraid of diseases like cholera, and hope by cooking the water will help to sanitize it. We have no choice to use the water from the stream”, she said. Spokesperson for the Greater Letaba Municipality (GLM), Lovers Maenetje said that the request from the residents has been noted and a commitment has been made and will be fulfilled. “It has nothing to do with politics, we are just experiencing a bit of a delay. Our water tankers programme is very long and we have very little resources to attend to all the requests. We assure the residents of Mandela Park that those tanks will be filled and we sincerely apologize for the delay in this matter’, Maenetje said.”

Granny’s Grumbles - THE WEDDING
A few months after the “no milk for the coffee´episode” we were invited to Johannesburg for a wedding. The daughter of some very good friends was marrying the second son of a Scottish lord. Anybody with a British background will tell you, the second son is not about to inherit anything of consequence but nevertheless all and sundry from all over the world was flying in to attend the wedding. Obviously one must put ones best foot forward for an occasion like this so I hauled out the outfit which had been especially made for me when I attended my son’s wedding Not only was it the first outfit that had been made especially for me but it was also the most expensive outfit that I had ever had. Two piece dark turquoise brocade
outfit fashionably loose and with a built in petticoat/lining. After my son’s wedding it was sent off to the drycleaners and had been sitting in my wardrobe swathed in plastic since then. We arrived in Johannesburg on the Friday and bearing in mind that we are from the country and regularly get lost in cities – this was before the advent of the GPS – I decided that we should start getting ready early on the Saturday as the wedding was taking place at three o’clock and quite a long way out of the city. Just after one o’clock I removed my outfit from the plastic – it was fairly obvious that something peculiar had happened since it was last worn. The bright pink lining was hanging about two inches lower than the skirt. Horror of horrors!! What on earth had happened? I yelled for my spouse who assured me that it was the way it was placed on the wire hanger. Two minutes later it was realised that the outfit had obviously shrunk at the dry cleaners – everything except the lining which was bright pink. Since the outfit itself had been fashionably loose and fairly long it was not a disaster except for the lining. “Not a problem” said my spouse “It can be stitched up – we have loads of time”. Guess what? My darling daughter did not have a needle or thread. I couldn’t believe it – AND said so. She was quick to point out that at the end of twenty years of marriage all I had in the way of a sewing box was a rusty biscuit tin with a couple of needles and numerous buttons that had fallen off clothes throughout the years. Hubby stepped in – what about some
safety pins? None in the house. Stapler?? Of course not. I had nothing else to wear and was feeling more than a little distraught. My visions of hob-nobbing with the aristocracy that afternoon were ruined and when my ever-tactful husband told me I should have examined the outfit when it was picked up from the dry cleaners I nearly threw a tantrum. Helpful hubby then suggested maybe a pair of scissors – just cut the lining – nobody’s going to see it. My daughter agreed – only problem being that the only scissors she had were curved nail scissors. I disappeared to sort out my hair while father and daughter attempted to cut the lining shorter than the skirt – the end result was pretty awful – don’t know what sort of material it was but it frayed very easily. Eventually we got to the wedding which was a very nice affair and I felt fairly good about my outfit. However when we got to the reception and I crossed my legs a vast amount of brilliant pink frayed lining appeared which I fortunately did not notice but my husband made frantic signals which I eventually understood. Off to the “ladies” and attempted to pull the offending frayed ends off. I did not realise that certain types of material just go on and on frayinhg. To be honest I felt distinctly uncomfortable – every time I danced, crossed my legs or moved my body more frayed ends appeared. Fortunately the champagne was flowing and I imbibed enough to enjoy the last couple of hours which was a relief. Since then I have never owned any clothing that needs dry cleaning – one can never be too careful. Also never criticize your children for being just like you!

Thursday was Ascension Day in the past it was a public holiday and many would go to church to celebrate this day, as it is no longer a public holiday many have forgotten that this day exists. We fail to remember the significance of this day, Christ had risen from the dead and He ascended into heaven to be re-united with His Father, to take His rightful place at the right hand of God. He was fulfilling the scriptures. The Old Testament prophets told of His coming and that He would die, rise again and ascend to the Father. Have we perhaps become too worldly, a fallen nation? We see statues being erected in honour of human beings and we often pay homage to these, are we not falling into idolatry? We get upset when these statues are removed for political reasons, to please those who offer reasons for their removal. Yet we fail hopelessly to acknowledge the existence of Jesus and what He did for us. I am not suggesting that we erect statues for Him, He never wanted to be humanized, but to be believed in. We remember what people did for the good of the nation sometimes elevating them to heights that seem above God. I believe often people do good as directed by God and therefore we should give God the glory as He raised these people to do His work here on earth. Yet we often forget this and think that it is by their own power that these works are done. 1 John 2v15 “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” The wonderful fact is that Christ did amazing things while He was here on earth and we acknowledge this. He is still doing these things today but we fail to see what He is doing, rather, we believe that it is the world that is giving us all. God is merciful and forgives us for our failing, does the world do the same? We need to truly get down on our knees once again and give God the glory. Acknowledgement for things we have done will be our ultimate aim when we come before Him once again and He says “My good and faithful servant”

The Letaba Tzaneen Lions Club held its annual induction dinner for its newly elected president on Saturday the 8th of June. Rodney Sabatier, current president of Letaba Tzaneen Lions Club, was re-elected as president for another consecutive term. The event was a cowboy themed affair with Lion members and guests dressing in Western style outfits. A number of Lions club members also received awards for 100 percent attendance and certificates

Master Maths Tutor Centre in Tzaneen celebrated its third anniversary recently. This centre moved a month ago, to 8 Morgan Street, into an all new tutor studio. According to Enid Steyn, centre manager and a mathematics tutor at Master Maths, the pupils enjoy the professional set-up of the new premises. Steyn added that the centre also has its own parking area which makes it more convenient and accessible to the parents and their children. Professional Extra Maths Lessons Master Maths offers professional extra math lessons and employs a progressive method of teaching mathematics. The unique method of integrating personal contact from tutors with interactive computer lessons sets them apart from other math tuition services. The lessons are authored by highly competent mathematics teachers who interpret the South African curriculum and convert it into a user-friendly and easy to understand format. Lesson content is regularly updated according to changes in the curriculum and the national CAPS (Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement) document. This National Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement is a single, comprehensive, and concise policy document, which has replaced the Subject and Learning Area Statements, Learning Programme Guidelines and Subject Assessment Guidelines for all the subjects listed in the National Curriculum Statement Grades from grade 4 to grade 12. Master Maths is for pupils from grade 4 to 12 and is fully bilingual. It provides pupils with the opportunity to work through the curriculum at their own pace, and according to their individual ability. Learning is reinforced and evaluated both on
the computer and through worksheets, which are completed in writing and assessed by the tutors. With better understanding comes improved marks and improved confidence. The end result is a positive, motivated, independent learner who has the opportunity to choose the future he or she wants. Steyn said some of the pupils’ progress is so remarkable that some shows an improvement from 40 to 80 percent on all levels in just one term. “This is indeed the case. Some pupils have shown a huge improvement and confidence boost not only in math, but also their other subjects at school. It depends on each individual child though, but the norm is a vast improvement”, she said. Master Maths also offers tuition services for science from Grade 4 to 12. Grade 12 pupils who would like to improve their math points can also rewrite their exams. Steyn said that even adults could apply for these tuition courses and that there is even a 32-year old lady who is currently doing her math and science training through the Department of Education. Steyn said Master Maths presents the classes to this lady. She added that the holiday programmes are especially ideal for pupils who struggle with certain aspects of math like geometry. Plasie voorlopers onvang intensiewe opleiding ■ Merensky Magoebaskloof Ruskamp het die naweek die Hoërskool Merensky se nuwe Uitvoerende Kommitee vir 2019/2020 gehuisves. Die groep leerlinge het, soos gebruiklik, ‘n intensiewe opleidingskamp, vanaf die 6de tot die 9de Junie bygewoon. Die 32 leerders is ondersteun deur die leiervoogde, Ada Venter en Seph Oosthuizen, terwyl die skool se bestuurspan ook hul insette gelewer het. Spanbousessies, logistieke beplanning en ander uitdagings het gesorg dat die geesdriftige leierskorps min geslaap, hard gewerk en baie pret beleef het. Projekbeplanning vir hul termyn het ook aandag geniet. Nadat die groep hul vergewis het van elkeen se sterk- en swakpunte, kon ‘n visie en leierskapsleuse, waarin elkeen deel, die lig sien. Hierdie dinamiese groep het besluit op die Latynse Ducere Exemplo, “Lei deur jou voorbeeld”. Die hoogtepunt van die kamp was onomwonde Sondag se hoendervleisseremonie waartydens die vorige hoofleiers die groep besoek het om hul te bemoedig. Uitsonderlik is die feit dat die groep, na al die saamstoei tot sukses, dan self hoofleiers aangewys het. Die Plasies se voorlopers vir 2019/2020 is Gerhardus Fourie en Jamie Robertson. Die onderhoofleiers is Duan Gubitz, Jason Janse van Rensburg, Suandrie Corbett en Dominique Blandin de Chalain. Duan Gubitz en Suandrie Corbett is ook as koshuis hoofleiers verkies. Hiér is Tiaan Tönsing en Meggan Cloete as adjunkte aangewys. Die groep se formele inhuldigingseremonie het op Woensdag, 12 Junie, in die skoolsaal plaasgevind.

Larries wys talent op verhoog ■ Roelof de Jonge Maandagaand die 10de Junie was weer tyd vir die jaarlikse talentaand by Laerskool Tzaneen. Hierdie geleentheid is volgens die skool se onderwyser en media skakelpersoon, Beaulah Pretorius, een van dié skool se grootse geleenthede jaarliks waar leerders die geleentheid kry om hul talent ten toon te stel. ‘n Verskeidenheid van items word aangebied deur hierdie talentvolle leerders. Riétte Rossouw, onderwyser en organiseerder van die talentaand, is volgens Pretorius al soveel jaar betrokke by hierdie aand. Rossouw het vertel oor haar betrokkendheid as organiseerder die afgelope paar jaar. “Die eerste wat ek met die talentaand te doen gekry het was 2001. Die leiers het toe portefeuljes gehad en dit is die kultuurleiers wie ‘n oop talentaand gehou het. Enige leerder wie gedink het hulle het talent kon hul gawe ten toonstel”, sê Me Rossouw. “Dit was nie so georganiseerd soos nou nie en bonop het almal dit nie baie ernstig opgeneem nie. Die aand het drie ure aangehou en daar was geen struktuur nie. Ek het gevoel dit moet meer georden geskied en ek organiseer hierdie geleentheid nou al vir die afgelope 15 jaar.” Sy sê leerders moet ‘n inskrywingsvorm voltooi en ‘n klein fooi betaal. Die leerders moet self tuis voorberei en geen afrig-
ting word by die skool gehou nie. “Ons probeer om die leerders te beperk tot een item, sodat soveel moontlik leerders die geleentheid kry en ook om ‘n groter verskeidenheid van items op te voer. Sonder om ‘n uitgerekte program aan te bied”, sê Rossouw. Sy vertel hoe oudisies eers gehou word om die leerders leiding en raad te gee en te verseker die leerders is goed voorberei om hul beste te kan gee. “Daar was ‘n tydperk waar dit slegs tweejaarliks gehou is, maar dan het daardie jaar se graad 7 leerders uitgemis op die geleentheid. Daarvandaan dat die talentaand nou jaarliks aangebied word. Die leerders is altyd baie opgewonde oor die geleentheid en ‘n program van hoë gehalte word gehou”, sê Rossouw. “Dis vir my heerlik om in die leerders se opgewondenheid te kan deel en hierdie platform vir hul te bied. Kultuur vloei deur my are, dus is my wens dat hierdie geleentheid vir altyd mag voortleef”, sê Rossouw.

Op Dinsdag die 4de Junie het rugbyspanne van Laerskool Tzaneen aan die Limpopo kampioenskap by die Forever Oord in Warmbad meegeding. Larries rugby spog na afloop van hierdie kampioenskapstoernooi met twee Limpopo kampioene en drie naaswenners. Die derdespan wen die halfeindstryd teen Laerskool Krugerpark met 24-0.
In die eindstryd teen Laerskool Pietersburg-Oos wen hul gemaklik met 47-0 om as Limpopo kampioene gekroon te word. Die tweedespan wen in hul halfeindstryd teen Laerskool Krugerpark met 5-0. In die eindstryd kom die Larries teen Pietersburg-Oos te staan en verloor met 17-12. Die O/11-span wen hul halfeindstryd nouliks teen Laerskool Thabazimbi met 12-10. Dié span speel egter gelykop in die
eindstryd teen Laerskool Pietersburg-Oos met die telling op 17 punte elk. Hierdie twee spanne deel dus die titel as Limpopo kampioene. Die O/10-span wen hul halfeindstryd gemaklik teen Laerskool Bosveld met 34-7. Die Larries het in die eindstryd teen Laerskool Pietersburg-Oos te staan gekom en moes die knie buig met ‘n rugbyles van 42-0.

■ Roelof de Jonge Pelo Makoti, a learner from Tzaneen Primary School, participated in the KFC Kiddies Kremetart Cycle Challenge in Louis Trichardt on Saturday the 8th of June. He competed in the category for boys U/10 and achieved a third place. This fun race for children took place over a distance of about two kilometres.

Bernard conquers Comrades

Bernard van den Dool from the Ofcolaco Harriers Club qualified and competed in six Comrades Ultra Marathons. His first race in this world famous marathon was in 2013. Bernard finally managed to finish his first Comrades in 2016 on the downhill run. The 2019 Comrades must surely rate as his finest outing yet when he finished the gruelling uphill race from Durban on Sunday. Still recovering from broken ribs and a bruised kidney he obtained unfortunately, Bernard showed some relentless determination to run in this year’s Comrades Ultra Marathon uphill version from Durban. He managed to cross the finish line in a time of 10 hours, 55 minutes and 19 seconds, earning him a well-deserved bronze medal. Here is his story on this amazing feat and of all the other great encounters of the previous Comrades he competed in. “I spend three nights in hospital and the vision of my Comrades up-run dream gone in tatters. But after five weeks of no training in the Comrades peak training period, I started training again. Although I was still sore and slow in practice. I thought that there was no way that after such a lay off, a general anaesthetic (painkiller) and plenty of medications that I would be able to take on the Comrades from Durban to Pietermaritzburg under 12 hours”, he said. “But an amazing coach Paul persuaded me to give it a go. Once I arrived in Durban, I was committed and would do my best regardless of the outcome. But I would not give up. I hardly heard the Comrade’s rituals like the Anthem, Shoshaloza and The Chariots of Fire. I was just praying.” “I have to put this down to hard work, my biggest supporter and wife Tracey, Proffesor Tim Noakes, Dr Charles Lubbe, Paul and his Dou Trappers and many other supporters and friends. But especially to the Big Guy up there and his band of Angels”, said Bernard proudly. “I believe that the good things in life don’t come easy. I started long distance road running when I was 34. I always battled with my feet until Run/Walk for Life was established in Tzaneen”, he said. “I joined up and this is where I learnt how to overcome some of my over-pronation (also referred as flat feet) challenges. I felt in love with running and found it to be one of the best de-stressing treatments ever. I needed to stay fit and healthy. My late dad, Hugo, was not this fortunate and died of lung cancer when he was just 57 years old. I was not going to let this happen to me if I could help it”, said Bernard. He said that running for him is a form of exercise where he gets the most return on quality time spent. For many years Bernard ran short distances of about 30 kilometres a week and competed in many half marathons. “I have never even considered running in a marathon or God forbid, the Comrades Ultra Marathon. That was for purely for athletes and I never regarded myself an athlete.” Then during a very difficult time in my life,
this changed completely. “I needed some serious time out. Many times I heard fellow runners said that every runner should run the Comrades. So I took up the challenge at the age of 54. With the support of my partner, Tracey, I ran my first marathon in 2013 in Mokopane and barely managed to qualify for the Comrades that year”, said Bernard. He said that a huge number of athletes from Tzaneen then attempted this enormous challenge. Bernard recalled that conditions on the day were the worst ever and he was simply not prepared enough to take on the huge challenge of the Comrades up-run. “I did not make a cutoff time, nearly 60km from the finish. I had to get on a ‘bailers’ bus which is terrible for any runner to happen. Just to put things into perspective, the first 42km of the Comrades up-run is countless up hills after another. I would rate the Comrades, especially the up-run, as one of the toughest marathons to compete in”, he said. In the 2014 Comrades down run Bernard did not start due to injury. In the 2015 up run race, he cramped badly about 70km into the race and again did not manage to make the cut-off time. In 2016 was the down run race from Pietermaritzburg and recorded his first finish in a time of 11 hours and 45 minutes. “This was the best feeling ever”, he recalled from the 2016 Comrades. I planned to propose to my beautiful partner, Tracey. Again the uphill race was a mere 30 seconds out of my reach. I had the infamous position of being the first runner to not make the end of Comrades. I spent about two hours in the medical tent, looking like a wreck”, said Bernard. He proposed nevertheless and Tracey said yes. Not being able to finish the Comrades was devastating for Bernard, but to propose to his sweetheart made up for the disappointment. They got married that December of 2017. “In 2018 I started training with Paul Zaayman and the ‘Dou Trappers’. Paul and other fellow athletes helped pushing me to new levels I have never imagined possible. This was a downhill run and I finished in 10 hours and 35 minutes claiming a bronze medal”, said Bernard.
Plaaslike atlete stuit nie vir strawwe Comrades ■ Roelof de Jonge Lang asems oftewel marathon atlete van dié dorp en omgewing het Sondag die 9de Junie aan die mergelende Comrades Ultra Marathon deelgeneem. Die voorste atleet is van Tzaneen Marathonklub. Evans Lefophane het dié Comrades in ‘n tyd van agt uur, 38 minute en 43 sekondes voltooi. Sodoende is hy ook met ‘n Bill Rowan medalje vir sy prestasie beloon. Atlete van Tzaneen Marathonklub, Le’Club Tzaneen en Ocolaco Harriers Klub het ondermeer hierdie wedloop voltooi. Vanjaar se wedloop, die opdraende weergawe, is vanaf Durban se stadsaal tot by die Scottsville Wedrenbaan op Pietermaritzburg beslis. Hierdie wedloop is oor ‘n afstand van 86,83 kilometer gehou.
