MDM pumps sewerage directly into river ■ Joe Dreyer It is estimated that approximately 100 litres of raw sewerage is currently being pumped into the Letsitele River every second. This very serious statement made by an anonymous source was backed up with photographic evidence of pump stations literally covered in human faeces. According to our source, one of the pump stations at Section C in Nkowankowa has not been in operation for more than four months after Eskom disconnected the station from the grid after it was found that the linkage to the station was illegal. The Mopani District Municipality was informed of this, but has allegedly made no effort to rectify the situation with Eskom in order to setup a legal connection and have station operational again. A little way further from this pump station lies Pentanenge pump station which has also been disconnected more than four months ago. This is resulting in nearly 40 litres of raw sewerage being pumped into the Letsitele River per second. Every day. Our source revealed that during peak times this figure can rise to as high as 100 litres per second. The Letsitele River feeds into the Letaba River which is utilized by the Tzaneen and Letsitele communities especially for irrigation purposes. With these two pump stations on either side of the main station not functional, the sewerage is pumped straight into the river. In addition to this absolutely horrific revelation, Petranenge Junior and Secondary School is situated right next to the sewerage works. Earlier this year the DA Constituency Head, Desiree van der Walt field criminal charges against the Municipal Manager of the MDM for gross violations of the constitutional rights of its citizens to have access to fresh water. Bulletin would have been able to provide comment from the office of the MDM, but at the time of going to print the newly appointed spokesperson for the MDM could not be reached for clarity. We have forwarded our inquiry to the Minister of water and sanitation and have sent a copy to Van der Walt. The sheer lack of this municipality to manage and maintain the systems that were self-sustainable two decades ago is appalling and has long since crossed the line to the criminal.

A man was murdered during an attack on a farm outside Gravelotte on Thursday evening last week and for the most part the incident seems to have been swept under the rug. The inexplicable silence surrounding the murder of Paul Ndlovu (61) has bred conspiracies among the local farm working communities of that area who now place doubt in the police and are left questioning whether the murderers will be sought and brought to book. According to the very vague police report, the victim and his partner, Nurse Makgate (48) were in their room on the Cottondale Game Ranch which borders Kilima Private Game Reserve and Spa, when four unknown African males armed with what is believed to have been machetes, forced entry into the room. They allegedly spoke Zulu. The men demanded money and when informed that there was none, attacked the couple. Ndlovu fought back but was overpowered, killed and his body dragged out of the room. Makgate was wounded in the attack and was tied to a bed. Later, after the assailants had left, she managed to free herself and alerted the other farm workers on the property. It was discovered that the men had ransacked the conference hall and office on the premises before fleeing. The police state that no arrests have been made and say that investigations are underway.

Beide is teen druktyd gister stabiel.

HEINZ WINCKLER LIVE AT

Another murder on Cottondale farm ■

Joe Dreyer

Unlike other incidents of farm attacks, this particular murder was not spread over social media or security groups. The farm watch was not informed and the police have not launched their customary “massive manhunt” for the killers. It has been a week after this man was brutally slain in his bedroom defending his partner during an attack by four criminals and his surviving family and friends must accept that no arrests have been made. Cottondale is the same farm where, in April 2000, John Cross (77) and his wife Bina (76) were brutally tortured and murdered by Ephraim Mokwena and Michael Malemela as they returned home from church. John was tied up by his neck in the bathroom and boiling hot water from the shower faucet was poured down his throat before he was shot in the head with a .303 hunting rifle. His wife was shot three times. First in the knees. While she was on her knees, the savage pair poured boiling water from a kettle over her head before finally shooting her with the same hunting rifle. She finally succumbed from blood loss. The murderers fled the scene with weapons and valuables from the house in the couple’s vehicle, but were arrested the very next day and finally sentenced to 50 years for the double murder and received a deserving sentence of 50 years imprisonment. They are confined in the Thohoyandou prison. In 2017 both the criminals applied for parole. It is not clear whether their parole was granted.

Clerks arrested

Jeff Jackson

Police in Thohoyandou are investigating the drowning of two children who died when they fell off of a makeshift bridge in the Muledane location in the Vhembe district. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon. According to the information received, four siblings were walking from one section of the Muledane township in Thohoyandou to the other when one of them, an 8-year old girl, suddenly fell from the bridge and plunged into a water-filled ditch below. Her brother also jumped into the ditch, apparently trying to rescue his sister, but they both perished. The other two siblings ran home to call for help. The two deceased siblings were identified as Adivhaho Mathikhi and her 10-year old brother Ntakadzeni Mathikhi from Muledane in the Thohoyandou area. It is not clear at this stage if the deceased drowned or died as a result of the falling. This will be determined by the unfolding police investigations. The ditch was apparently filled with water after the recent rains that fell in the area. The “wooden makeshift bridge” was made for pedestrians as the streets in the area are being tarred. Shockingly the police statement uses the term “bridge” when in fact photographs of the scene show it to be a single 114x38 roof rafter placed over a ditch. At parts, the piece of wood actually touches the water in the ditch.

Three Phalala Vehicle Testing Station officials aged between 23 and 62 were rearrested at the testing station in Lephalale for continuing to issue fraudulent vehicle roadworthy certificates. The artrests were executed on Monday, 14th of October. The trio was rearrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team in collaboration with Road Traffic Management Corporation and the Special Investigations Unit in a continuous operation to fight fraud and corruption at Vehicle Testing Stations. The suspects were arrested previously, on the 9th of April 2019, by the same team for allegedly using the identity particulars of unsuspecting victims to authorise roadworthy certificates for vehicles that were never physically subjected to mandatory tests. On the 12th of April they were granted R1 000 bail each by the Lephalale Magistrate’s Court with strict conditions and warned not to commit similar offenses. The investigation revealed that, despite being out on bail and warned against committing similar offenses, the suspects continued using the identity particulars of the same victims they have used before, to issue more fraudulent vehicle roadworthy certificates. The suspects appeared in the Lephalale Magistrate’s Court this week Tuesday along with their other colleague who was also arrested by the same team for similar offenses at the testing station. Khumalo Zwelihle (37) examiner, Lebogang Rapetsoa (24) admin clerk (second arrest), Peter Schutte (62) examiner (second arrest) and Makwena Silas Mashala (28) examiner (second arrest) were remanded in custody until the 18th of October by the Lephalale Magistrate’s Court. www.issuu.com

The Police in Hlogotlou outside Groblersdal, arrested a 28-year old woman for killing her 11-year old son and burying his body in a shallow grave in the yard of her rented house at Hlalanikahle village next to Monsterlus. The incident allegedly took place on Monday the 7th of October. The mother had to be rescued by the police when the villagers attacked her after suspecting her for being responsible for the disappearance of her son. Police investigations led them to the spot in the yard where the lifeless body of the child was found buried in a shallow grave. At the time of going to print we had received no further information on the possible motive for the killing. The suspect will appear in Hlogotlou magistrate court soon. The Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba condemns in the strongest possible terms, this brutal incident in which the most vulnerable are killed by those that are expected to protect them.

Cele changes strategy ■

Seven caught

Jeff Jackson

Police Minister, Bheki Cele has urged rural community members to work “hand in glove” with law enforcement to improve the safety within their communities. The Minister was speaking at the launch of the renewed National Rural Safety Strategy hosted in Makhado, Limpopo. Some commentators and critics of Cele have labelled this move as yet another attempt by the minister to use the community involvement card as a way to compensate for the inability of his own police force to adequately fulfil its serve and protect mandate. According to statement by the provincial SAPS communications department, the reviewed launch is aimed at enhancing community-police partnerships by augmenting the work of Rural Safety Priority Committees at national, provincial and district level. Under the theme “Zizojika Izinto” the police claim that the renewed strategy will turn the tide against rural crime by increased police capacity and resources. Minister Cele told crowds gathered at the launch in Makhado that police will continue to enforce the law. “Whether it be on foot or by air, in vehicles, motorcycles, quad-bikes or on horses, this strategy will see crime prevention measures go where they have never gone before by focusing on hotspots in rural areas to turn the tide against crime,” Cele valiantly claimed. This despite the latest crime statistics highlighting the contrary. Police Commissioner General Khehla Sitole said there will be a shift of resources to identified areas. “It will mean that the detective and tracking arm of the SAPS will also be strengthened in these areas, especially in areas experiencing high cases of stock theft.” The areas were however not clarified and remain as vague as the actual strategy. The Rural Safety Priority Committees are expected to meet quarterly to monitor incidents of violent crime and together with police plan interventions.

The SAPS in Tubatse outside Burgersfort have managed to arrest seven suspects aged between 29 and 40 on Monday morning on suspicion of being involved in a business robbery that took place on Sunday. In a statement to the media the police said that some of their members were conducting routine patrols as part of their visible policing strategy, when they noticed a suspicious looking Toyota Quantum traveling along the R37 in the Mashamothane area. When these police officers attempted to stop the vehicle, it sped off and car chase ensued. The suspects were cornered at Mashamothane Moshate cross and arrested. One of the suspects managed to evade arrest when he ran into the darkness. During the arrests a 9mm firearm, a blue 3HP 200lt compressor, four excavator teeth, four cell phones and the Toyota Quantum were recovered. Police believe that the seven arrested suspects may be linked to serious crimes in the Burgersfort area although the origins of the recovered items have yet to be determined. The suspects will appear in the Praktiseer magistrate’s court soon on charges of possession of unlicensed firearm and possession of suspected stolen properties and in the Mencklenburg magistrate’s court on a charge of business robbery. According to the police, more suspects might be involved in this matter and a “Police manhunt” is underway. Anyone with information that can lead their arrest should contact Colonel Mahlathini Ngele on 082 573 3645 or the crime stop number 0860010111 or the nearest police station.

TRE trainees graduate with flying colours ■ Susannah Cole-Hamilton and Dr Erika Coertzen

Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE) is a method to help release tension stored in the body due to stress, anxiety and trauma. TRE can be used in crises and even after accidents as emergency interventions, but it is mainly taught as a self-help tool with the aim of bringing the body and mind back into balance, thereby improving overall health. A pilot training course was developed by Dr Erika Coertzen, a doctor for integrative medicine and a TRE Trainer from Tzaneen, to introduce TRE to persons situated in rural areas. The first group of 16 people mostly from Hlokomela, Anova and Choice Trust graduated in Hoedspruit in September 2018 after a six-month training period. This was such a resounding success that this year another course was held and a total of 23 participants proudly graduated on the 27th of September. There were 14 participants from Hlokomela, one from Choice Trust, three from iNkwazi Partnership, two from Hlayisani Drop-In Center and three Caregivers. Dr Erika Coertzen and the team would like to

Badgers bow to Oaks ■ Jeff Jackson

With cricket fever matching the record high temperatures of the recent weeks, it was Stanford Lake College who took on the mighty Oaks in another T20 match on Saturday afternoon atop their mountain nest outside Tzaneen. This would be the second match of the day for the brave Badgers who won the toss and sent the visitors

in to bat. Taking their hosts by surprise, the Oaks paced themselves to a slow momentum-building start forcing the 24 extras off stray balls from the Badgers bowling arsenal. The deadly Stanfordian strike-bomber, Connor Veldsman, stood out from the rest of the bowling squadron after claiming a beautiful wicket in two overs for just eight runs. Concluding their allotted 20 overs, the visitors left the scorecard on 124 for three. Katlego Mohlala proved devastating between the sticks smash-

ing 56 runs from 42 deliveries for the Oaks. The Stanfordians took to the crease to face a fierce attack from openers Makwale Sekgobela and Mabine Nkogo who kept the hosts confined to their boxes for most of the innings. Lance Trueman stepped up to the plate for his team and managed four boundaries and one sixer before being caught in the midfield by Segafi Sekgobela on 40 off just 30 deliveries. The Oaks took advantage after this and overpowered their hosts to a 28 run victory.
