Another escape ■

One arrested in Lenyenye shutdown

Jeff Jackson

Shockingly, another incident of dangerous criminals escaping from lawful custody was reported on Monday evening. According to the official police statement the five awaiting trial prisoners escaped from holding cells in Witpoort outside Lephalale on Monday evening at around 22:00. It is alleged that the men escaped through a hole in one of the cell walls, though police were not willing to confirm. The five were arrested for serious crimes including murder, rape and business robbery with escape from lawful custody added to their charge sheets following the escape. The men are identified as Jappie Shiko (29) from Kitty village, Lesiba Frans Machaba (27) from Kauletse village, Paul Madira (19) from Botsalanong (Friendship) village, Bongani “Vusimusi” Sibanda (31) from Zimbabwe who is suffering from a gunshot wound he sustained during a business robbery incident and Sipho Mpofu (39) suspected to be from Zimbabwe. Once again the police are appealing to community members to assist them with any information that can lead to the re-arrest of these escapees. Community members are urged to urgently contact Detective Warrant Officer Ratlou Morudu at 082 468 8931, the Crime Stop number 0860010111 or the nearest police station.

A 12-year old boy will be tried for murder this week after he shot and killed his three year old brother at their home in Mankweng. The incident is reported to have occurred on Saturday morning while the boys were playing. The firearm used in the shooting incident belongs to the boys’ father, a 53-year old former security guard who had left the weapon in a bag which was hanging against the wall in his bedroom. The older boy somehow managed to get hold of the weapon which led to the shooting dea of his younger sibling. The father was not at home at the time but their mother was startled by the sound of the gunshot and rushed to the room where she discovered a very badly wounded young boy. The victim was rushed to the clinic where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The police were alerted to the incident and the firearm was confiscated. The Provincial SAPS Commissioner in Limpopo, Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba, condemned this incident and directed that, in addition to the investigations into the circumstances of the shooting, appropriate steps must be taken against the father for keeping the firearm in contravention of the Firearms Control Act. “I urge all lawful firearm owners to, at all times keep their weapons in locked safes to avoid unauthorized access,” the General reiterated. The 12 year old suspect will be dealt with in accordance with the processes governing children who are in conflict with the law. Probation officers have already been engaged to take the process forward. Police investigations into the circumstances of the shooting are already underway.

Stupid magic ■ Joe Dreyer South Africa’s wildlife is under continuous threat due to the irrational and absurd traditional beliefs regarding the magical healing properties of certain animals. One such animal is the endangered Pangolin which is being hunted down and slaughtered by barbarians and their misguided belief in the supernatural. These ignoramuses are of the belief that the scales of these defenceless creatures keep evil spirits at bay and offer protection against illnesses. Obviously none of these statements have ever been backed by science and need tobe dismissed for the absolute nonsense they are. Nevertheless between 10,000 and 200,000 of these harmless unobtrusive creatures are killed illegally each year – making the Pangolin the most trafficked animals in the world. There are eight Pangolin species, four African and four Asian. Two are listed as critically endangered. Four others are deemed vulnerable. Because other endangered animals like the tiger and the rhino are wildlife celebrities, they receive massive global backing and support through various media and wildlife organizations while the Pangolin is basically forgotten. It is time that these animals receive the attention they deserve before future generations read about them in the history books alongside the Kwagga and the Dodo. The three suspects arrested on Friday, 25th of October for possession of an endangered species, were apprehended by police in Mussina after a tip off from the public. The Police received information about a suspicious vehicle traveling from Alldays to Musina with three occupants searching for a possible buyer. A snap operation was then conducted and a vehicle matching the description given was spotted by the police parked along the N1 road in the Mussina CBD. The vehicle, with three occupants was searched and a Pangolin was found hidden in the vehicle. The three suspects were then arrested on the spot and appeared in the Mussina Magistrate’s court on Monday. At the time of going to print the outcome of the court hearing was unknown.

Business came to a standstill this Tuesday and Wednesday at the Maake Plaza precinct when residents of Lenyenye and members of the EFF closed the Lydenburg road with tree trunks, burning tyres and rubble. The group threatened bystanders who were taking pictures or resisting to follow orders as given by organisers of the March. Following the closure of the roads, shops owned foreigners had to close as they were afraid they could be attacked by striking mobs. In an unusual way workers from various government complexes had to close their offices and run for cover as they were afraid their vehicles could be damaged. Even street hawkers were not spared. Attempts by the police to quell the situation proved futile as rocks were hurled at their vehicles until the assistance of a helicopter was sought which also proved null as the closing of streets continued. Though rubber bullets were used to disperse the mob after some time they were back at the same spot burning tyres as if nothing happened. The protests follows a march a week ago to the satellite offices of the GTM municipality where residents demanded clean water from their councillor and the selection of local residents as labourers for government projects be conducted in full view of the community. A memorandum was handed to the GTM and though their demands were not immediately tended to, residents threatened to close the town if nothing concrete came of their demands. A striker on Wednesday told this reporter that the councillor in the area, Justice Ramodipa, addressed residents on their issues and said that by the close of business yesterday (Wednesday) water would have been restored. This did not happen. The striker said that residents had for some time been complaining about water but nobody ever took them seriously, hence their aggressive protests. By the time of going to print the impasse was still not mediated. Residents had to either go through Mokomotji, or Thabine villages and pass through Khujwana before they joined the main road at the R71.

Wolkberg hiker search ends in tragedy ■

Joe Dreyer

The discovery of his body on Saturday morning ended the search for missing Wolkberg Wilderness hiker, Devereaux Pienaar. He was 53 at the time of his death and leaves behind his wife, Veronica, daughter Clarissa, sons Stian and Armand and his brother Nico. A memorial will be held for Devereaux on Friday (tomorrow) in the NG Church Moreleta Park at 13:00. The two brothers entered the Wolkberg along the Serala Trail on the 15th of October for a planned two-day hike. After the first night however the pair ran into trouble with Devereaux not feeling too well and according to Nico, because they did not pack adequate supplies, they decided to cut their hike short and head back to the admin offices where they had left their vehicle. After what can only be attributed to a series of unfortunate calculation errors, the brothers found themselves lost in the dense and unforgiving wilderness. In their attempts to find their way out, they managed to not only lose their backpacks, but also became separated from one another. Nico, the younger of the two, wandered around in the wilderness for three days before finally making his way to the Ramodike dam wall where a taxi driver noticed him and came to his aid. Authorities were alerted of his missing brother and a search was immediately launched. Five days after the search began, new hope flared up when one of the search teams returned with the two missing backpacks and word of the discovery of what appeared to have been hiking boot prints in the sand. Two days after that however, Devereaux’s body was found roughly a kilometre from the point where the brothers had become separated in the dark. A source said that it appeared to the rescue team as though he may have fallen from an elevated point along the route. At the time of going to print

this had however not been confirmed. It is also not clear how long he had been deceased before the rescue teams found him. It is believed that the brothers separated in the dark while climbing out of a canyon up onto a ridge. Devereaux climbed out first and seemed to have veered to the right while Nico, who managed to make his way out of the canyon 45 minutes later, veered to the left. The family have expressed their gratitude to all members of the search teams who volunteered their time and energy during this mammoth operation. For the interview with Nico Pienaar, visit our website at www. bulletin.us.com or find the link on our Facebook page.

Opvolg: Nagklub-eienaar HEINZ WINCKLER bevraagteken bewerings LIVE AT ■

Joe Dreyer

Granny’s Grumbles - THE TWO PIECE

Short – sharp – and to the point. That was what our English teacher used to say as she gave us a writing assignment. However she would add that it must be at least two pages long but not full of waffle. Hopefully this is not full of waffle. The year was 1983. We were on our way to Durban and I had my first ever twopiece bathing suit. Not a bikini I hasten to add – a two piece costume was actually considered reasonably modest. I couldn’t wait to go to the beach and try some body surfing so the first day after we arrived we found a quiet section of beach and I was all set to catch the

waves. The day was not particularly sunny and it turned out that neither my husband nor my daughters had any intention of getting into the water because, according to my husband, the tide was going out and it was dangerous. What utter drivel – I had seen so many movies with surfing enthusiasts riding giant waves that I couldn’t see any problem at all. I walked down to the edge of the beach, waited until a wave appeared to have been sucked away and threw myself into what I thought would be the way up. I was picked up like a feather and found myself in what seemed to be a giant liquidizer. The old “frog in the blender” adage was probably made up by some guy who had done exactly what I had just done. I was swirled around and around then suddenly dumped - and then sand blasted along the bottom of a lot of grit. Do not ever think that the lovely soft sand on the beach is anything like the gritty stuff that you get dragged along when coming down out of a dumper. I felt the wave being sucked back and realised {in my very confused state} that I should get up and onto the real beach as soon as possible. When I heaved myself up I realised that the bottom part of my bathing costume was actually down by

my knees due to the fact that it must have acquired at least a kilogram of wet sand and grit whilst I was being torpedoed around. As I stumbled forward trying to remove the said contents of my costume and at the same time hoping against hope that I was not about to be taken up by another giant wave I saw my youngest daughter running towards me making wild gestures. It appeared that she was trying to indicate that my throat had been cut. Alas however, it turned out that the upper part of my bathing costume was actually wrapped around my neck and my two darling daughters were mortified by mother’s absolute stupidity. “There is an old man who actually stood up to get a better look at you” hissed my little darling. I didn’t even care – I was hurting all over and needed a bit of sympathy which was not forthcoming from my family members. My daughters were embarrassed and my ever-loving hubby was sitting staring down at the sand. Also embarrassed I thought but not at all – he was so convulsed with laughter that tears were pouring down his cheeks. I never wore my two-piece again and I decided to wait for smaller waves before impressing my family with my body-surfing ability. It also took two days for my badly beaten and grazed body to recover. An unforgettable holiday? Well - it appears that my family have never forgotten it – a memorable occasion that gets brought up with monotonous regularity at family gatherings.

Tuinbouklub vier nasionale Tuinboudag ■

Laurika Rauch voer 2019 Optog! ■

Merensky

‘n Ademlose verwondering.

Plasies “skivvies” honour tradition ■

Gr.12-span met Rifqah Moosa, Simran Brahmbhatt, Zenesia Nukeri en Danzi Ivy saam met die beoordelaars.

Merensky

It is an annual tradition for the Gr.8 learners from Merensky High School to plant a time capsule near the Plasie Museum. On the 18th of October the tradition was honoured again. This year’s skivvies (green horns) answered questions on interesting events that happened at the school during 2019. In 2023, when these Gr.8 learners are in matric, they will dig up the time capsule and recall how they experienced Plasieland five years before. The so called “Skivvies of the Year” handled the planting ceremony. This year it was the privilege of Simone and Tylor Nel and Nic de Beer and Siraaj Omar, who were named “Skivvies of the Year” at the school’s prize giving ceremony on the 10th of October.
