ANC wants to take over EFF march
■ Jeff Jackson
The African National Congress’ Youth League (ANCYL) in Limpopo has urged its members in Lenyenye to join the water protests set for next week, Tuesday, and lead the march instead of allowing the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) - who are the instigators - to lead. These were the words of ANCYL secretary, Che Selane, during the memorial service of Easy Seokgo, at the community hall. The memorial service, which attracted the who’swho in ANC circles, was graced by the attendance of the deputy minister of the Safety and Security, Cassel Mathale, who delegated Che Selane to speak on behalf of the ANC. “I was supposed to speak on behalf of the ANCYL only, but Comrade Cassel Mathale, who is among us today delegated me to even speak for the ANC,” Selane said in his address.
“We hear that there is a community protest planned for next week over water shortages in the township. The ANC is part of the community therefore its members should not work with opposition parties like the EFF, instead, we should come forward and lead the march and show that the problems of the community are also of the organisation.” Selane said that if members of ANC do not join the strike because their organisation is ruling, the party is likely to be affected as the opposition would seize the opportunity to popularise themselves which will affect the organisation during the local government elections set to be held next year. Easy Seokgo was a community youth leader who was employed by the department of health in the Capricorn district by the time of his demise. The strike which is organised by the EFF, is
planned for the second week of January and will see main streets and roads closed and the community become inaccessible. This will not be the first community protest in the township as three months ago the same roads were closed by angry township residents due to a shortage of water and the GTM’s failure to provide water in the form of water trucks. Following the strike action, the trucks started delivering the precious cargo once again. However, in December when the trucks belonging to contractors were stopped, the water crisis in the township re-emerged. The few trucks which were redeployed to Tzaneen by the district municipality were not enough to cover the many villages around Tzaneen. A community member said that shortages of water in the township is triggered by the fact there is not enough water per household allocated.

■ Jeff Jackson Several major projects to construct roads in various villages within the Lesedi Cluster of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) will resume once again next week Tuesday after a long festive season recess. This comes at the time opposition parties are questioning how the contractors were hired after concerns emerged that only a select few benefit from these contracts. Prior to the festive recess some of the contract workers complained that they were not going to be reimbursed for the wages they lost out on due no payments on the days they did not work because of the rains. The doubts about the future of the contracted services came to the fore during a government Lekgotla in which it emerged that almost all the government departments had exhausted their budget just four months before new budgets could be tabled.
Among the projects which are expected to restart are the Moime-Khujwana access road, the Leseka access road, the Nabane access road and the Ditenteng electrification project. Work on the construction of the Lenyenye taxi rank has already recommenced this week. However, in the Khujwana area, there will be a new project to construct houses and toilets which is expected to commence soon. The infamous Mulati and Codesa projects are still on hold following the battle between the GTM and the Tshiamiso contractors. Though the Moime-Khujwana access road project seemed nearing completion, it was interrupted by inner-conflict among the contractors on the project over the appointment of sub-contractors which nearly brought matters to a complete standstill as community members staged protests at the gates of the project for many days. Committee members told Bulletin the matter has since been settled.
The suspension, or termination, of contracts by various municipalities and some provincial departments in Limpopo has left many service providers disappointed. It is said that these contractors are planning for an action to retain their contracts. This followed a revelation by Limpopo Premier Stanley Mathabatha, that misrepresentation by service providers contributed to the Limpopo coffers being exhausted. Following the move, a directive was issued that contracting for service delivery be reviewed but without the consequences. In Tzaneen, contracts for delivering water to residents and digging trenches were put on hold. At a meeting attended by service providers at Nkowankowa during the festive season it was resolved that those groups who are intentionally preventing the completion of work on these projects should be forced to leave. A source revealed that the meeting was attended by various service providers who discussed a way forward following the termination of contracts. In December the trucks which were delivering water to various communities, were replaced by Mopani District Municipal trucks which were leased
Inspections to prevent immature avocado sales ■ Joe Dreyer The sale of immature avocados (which will not ripen properly) is prohibited in terms of the Agricultural Product Standards Act. Inspectors will be testing maturity levels of early season avocados offered for sale. If avocados are found to be immature, the sale of this fruit will be prohibited. According to Derek Donkin, CEO of the South African Subtropical Growers’ Association, the fruit will be inspected by fresh produce inspection company, Prokon, which has been contracted by the South African Avocado Growers’ Association (SAAGA). He said that these inspectors are currently checking National Fresh Produce Markets daily. Avocado growers are advised to ensure that their fruit meets the required maturity standard before picking. For the cultivar Fuerte, fruit moisture content must be 80% or less. Reputable avocado packhouses are all able to carry out the necessary maturity testing. Inspectors will be checking avocado maturity on the National Fresh Produce Markets. Growers should be sure that their avocados are properly
mature before harvesting so that they do not run the risk of their fruit being rejected. The grower will be responsible for the cost of removing immature fruit from the market. For further information on maturity testing, contact Andries Bester the Subtropical Growers Association (Subtrop), tel. 015 307 3677. “Immature fruit does not ripen properly, so the problem is not with consumers ingesting immature fruit; the problem is that they will buy fruit that that they will not be able to eat and enjoy.” Explained Donkin. “Immature fruit refers to fruit that will not ripen properly to acceptable eating quality. This is related to fruit moisture content. If the moisture content is above 80% the fruit will not ripen acceptably. Fruit that is picked too early, has a moisture content above 80% but unfortunately, the public would not be able to easily identify immature avocados. Should they purchase

from a company in Gauteng called Bret Brite. A reliable source alluded that the reason the contracts were suspended was allegedly due to financial losses and unhappiness by workers who were being paid minimal wages. “There is a plan in place which includes the possibility of Tzaneen purchasing the machinery and hiring people to work on them instead of service providers with questionable credentials being appointed on tenders and contracts.” It proved impossible to reach either the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) or the Mopani District Municipality (MDM) for a response by the time of going to print giving the time of year. Therefore these allegations will be properly investigated and their response on the matter will be published accordingly in due course. A resident of Nkowankowa told Bulletin that the township cleaning contractors and garbage removers were still working. This comes at the time during which several political parties are raising concerns with regards to the awarding of tenders throughout the province. This has resulted in two contractors having their appointments terminated in Tzaneen and Phalaborwa municipalities respectively.
avocadoes that do not ripen to an acceptable standard within two weeks, they should return the fruit to the retailer.” ** Editor’s comment: This is something of a problem for the motorists and visitors to our area who, despite this newspaper’s campaign to warn them of the dangers, continue to stop and support the illegal street hawkers along the R71 highway. Most of the fruit sold by these illegal traders are picked too early and in the case of the avocadoes especially, it has become a very well known and accepted fact that the fruit is likely stolen. This means that should you buy this fruit; you will not be able to eat and enjoy them as they will never ripen. If you are a visitor from Gauteng, you will not be able to return the fruit either and even if you could, you would have little to no recourse as these hawkers operate under a set of rules which supersede the law of the country and the bylaws of the municipality. Phalaborwa municipality’s seat-warmers ■
Joe Dreyer
What is left of Phalaborwa, once the jewel of Limpopo, is fast deteriorating at the hands of its inept ANC-led municipality. The town’s municipal manager, Maite Moakamela, and mayor, Merriam Malatji, have failed their communities (Phalaborwa town, Namakgale and Lulekani) dismally, by turning a blind eye to the service delivery failures which have now left their citizens with frequent electricity outages, frequent water shortages and with sewerage filling their parks and running through their streets. Moakamela, who kept the seat warm in the corporate services manager’s office before she chased a better payday and joined the Mopani District in 2007, re-joined the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality as the manager for corporate services in 2013 until, inexplicably, she was appointed as the town’s municipal manager in 2017. Since then, the town has changed mayors in the uniquely ANC trademark fashion. Pule Shayi who failed to make any significant impact in the municipality’s alleged campaign to alleviate the dire state of the Ba-Phalaborwa region, received a promotion to the Mopani District Municipality (MDM) last year, where he now plays chief. He was replaced by Malatji who has done a fantastic job of filling his shoes in the ignoring of public needs department. In November 2019, two years after her appointment, Moakamela was implicated along with Malatji, in what appears to have been tender fraud related to the awarding of tenders to a contractor allegedly without following the prescribed competitive bidding process. That case is currently being investigated and both the DA and the EFF have
called for the heads of these two women. The investigation into the two tenders, one for the refurbishment of the Namakgale stadium for R499 000, and the other for the installation of storm water culverts in various areas for R930 000 seems to indicate that the contractor who won the bid for the Namakgale stadium project, invoiced the BPM for R500 000 worth of work only two days after starting on the project. The invoice was paid the next day. The R930 000 storm water culverts invoice was paid within 11 days. This is even though in the 2017/18 financial year Ba-Phalaborwa only had enough cash on hand to pay for six days of operations (the norm is 3 months). These payments were made in June and July of 2019. Despite evidence of these payments which has now been circulated by the Democratic Alliance, there is no evidence that tenders were formally awarded either for the refurbishment of the Namakgale Stadium or the installation of storm water culverts in the period January to June 2019. “Only in October 2019, months after they had received payment, were the companies contracted to serve on municipality’s panels of civil and electrical engineers,” explained the DA’s Shadow Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Cilliers Brink. “For a panellist to receive work before the panel in question has even been constituted is a logical and legal impossibility, and suggests that Ba-Phalaborwa’s competitive bidding processes, designed to secure the best expertise and value for money, were deliberately by-passed.” The Democratic Alliance (DA) is now driving the call for urgent action by provincial and national government to prevent what appears to be a cover-up of rigged tenders and unlawful payments in the Ba-Phalaborwa municipality. Sources inside the municipality claim that mayor Malatji was given the same documents now in the DA’s possession. But she allegedly has not made a full disclosure to the municipal council, and neither has the council appointed an independent investigator as required by disciplinary regulations for senior managers of the Municipal Systems Act. The matter has instead, at the
Mayor’s apparent behest, been fobbed off to a committee of councillors that has no legal authority to investigate the allegations, according to Brink. A national newspaper has in the meantime reported that the suspicious payments and appointments were first discovered by Ba-Phalaborwa’s legal manager, Tshiritshiri Mashale who allegedly stalled the drafting of the agreements while attempting to alert the municipality about the irregularities. The Citizen reported that this apparently made him “unpopular” among his principals who later attempted to use him as their scapegoat. According to a report in the Citizen, Mashale wrote a letter to the municipal manager and the other directors stating his displeasure and refusal to be a part of concealing a crime. It is believed that it is this letter that was leaked to the DA and the EFF and which led to the current situation. The EFF has publicly called for the immediate resignation of Moakamela. “She must go straight to jail. She is the accounting officer and should know better,” said EFF councillor in the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality, Pontsho Mashumu. The DA has also written to Limpopo MEC for local government, Mr Basikopo Makhumo, asking him to use his power in terms of section 106 of the Municipal Systems Act to order an independent investigation and take steps to prevent implicated officials from undermining the investigation. “But accountability of ordinary officials is not enough. Mayor Malatji herself must clarify what she knew about these transactions, and when she knew it,” said Brink. “In the run-up to the 2021 local government elections voters deserve to be able to put faces and names to stories of financial mismanagement and the breakdown of services, especially in small, rural towns.” Shockingly, this municipality received a qualified audit opinion from the auditor general of South Africa for the 2017-2018 financial year after a decade of managing only disclaimers. The usual self-congratulatory ceremony took place with Moakamela and the chief financial officer, Tshepo Mogano, receiving praise for the “hard work” they dedicated to achieving what their media liaison termed “a milestone achievement”. This was in December 2018. Bulletin has tried in vain to reach the illusive spokesperson for the BPM, Jonas Mahesu, who has in the past dismissed our inquiries and investigations as bias and unwarranted. Mahesu has become notorious for not responding to phone calls, messages or emails. We have accidentally learnt that there might be another spokesperson for this municipality, but we have not been able to establish this for certain, at the time of going to print.

Phala’s street mechanics remain a huge problem ■ Joe Dreyer The illegal street mechanics operating in the parking area between Autozone Phalaborwa and Hi-Q, have continued their environmental transgressions unabated. This despite a public outcry to have them removed which has been continuously met with inaction by the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality’s apologetic response “they are only trying to make a living.” This newspaper has, on numerous occasions, highlighted the impact of their activities on the immediate environment which includes their aggressive attitudes and the pollution of the natural resources by the dumping of used motor oil and other spare parts into the town’s storm water drainage system. The shop owners and management in that area have tried to find solutions to the problem in recent years. Roughly seven years ago, residents lodged a complaint with the department of environmental affairs. According to one business owner, the correspondence with the department resulted in a visit to the site by the Green Scorpions. “They told us that they have inspected the site and they found nothing wrong with the situation.” The manager of one of the retailers bordering this parking area said that they have tried to chase the mechanics away in the past, but were met with aggression, insults and racial slurs which has now resulted in them trying to find a way to work around them being there. The Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality have remained mum on the sit-
uation and by all accounts seem to have adopted an apathetic attitude towards the mechanics. Residents have offered solutions such as fencing off the parking area, but this has been shot down by the municipality due to an apparent lack of funds for such an endeavour. In the meantime, it has come to light that even SAPS police vehicles are now being serviced by these mechanics. Bulletin is in possession of a video clip which shows what appears to be an unmarked police van being serviced under a tree in the middle of the parking area. A photograph was circulated over social media showing private vehicles being serviced on the paved walkway bordering the parking area. The situation has spiralled so out of control that residents no longer approach the parking area, and some have even gone as far as accusing the businesses in that vicinity of cooperating with these street vehicle service technicians. Bulletin contacted the management of one of the retailers receiving the most criticism on the matter given their proximity to the area in which these men operate. We were told that the Phalaborwa branch of the organization was not permitted to comment on the matter and that we should contact their legal department at their head of-
fice in Johannesburg. Which we duly did. We were assured that the regional manager of the group was made aware of the situation and so too, the general manager of the retail arm of the national franchise. Suggestions by the public have been welcomed in order to find an amicable solution to end the current impasse which could tie into current suggestions of providing the mechanics with a more suitable space in which can operate and safely dispose of the used motor oil and parts. We were assured that a response from the group would be received in time for next week’s edition and we will publish such upon receipt.
Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality will face 106 charges ■ Joe Dreyer Residents of the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality are being totally ignored by not only some of their Ward Councillors, but by the entire municipal hierarchy. Just last year the residents, led by George Hepburn, Manie Kriel and Sybrant de Beer, staged two major protests in an attempt to be heard by the office-occupiers at the municipal buildings. The “#Gatvol” movement garnered national attention, but despite the best efforts by the ratepayers (many of whom own businesses and properties in the municipality) nothing came of it. Not even a poster by the mayor’s own daughter pleading her father for water and electricity, was enough to have any effect on the state of affairs, other than her father, Pule Shayi, vacating his position and moving to the District office. This week that struggle continued as more than 106 residents submitted their concerns in the form of charge sheets which will be handed to the Public Prosecutor within the next week by Hepburn. The charges are all related to the continuously declining infrastructure, the daily power outages, daily water shortages and most recently the lingering stench of raw human waste which is literally running down the streets in many of the residential areas. “We, as tax paying residents of Phalaborwa,
have reached a stage where we can no longer accept the fact that our council just does not care about us at all. We have begged and pleaded, even resorted to threats and nothing has helped,” said Hepburn. “You cannot go anywhere in our town without the smell of poop hanging in the air. There are constant sewerage leaks and daily we see hundreds of litres of raw sewerage flooding into our storm water drains and ultimately into the water systems around town, which lead directly to the KNP.” According to many of the business owners around Phalaborwa town specifically, the potholes, power outages, water shortages and sewerage pollution has had a negative effect on tourism – the life blood of the town. “International tourists visit the Kruger Park and instead of spending a day in our beautiful town and supporting the local restaurants and businesses, they venture as far as the Kruger Spar and maybe Total Masorini across the street. They buy a bit of groceries and fill up their tanks and head right back into the Park. And honestly, who the hell can blame them?” Hepburn explained that the 106 charges to be handed in at the public prosecutor this week, are lodged against the Ba-Phalaborwa council for the constant sewerage problems and their part in the degradation of the local
environment thereby putting the health of the residents directly at risk. All the charges refer directly to the constitution (section 24), the National Environmental Act (Act 107 of 1998), National Environmental management: Waste Act (act 59 of 2008) and read in conjunction with The Criminal Procedures Act (act 51 0f 1997). “I would like to extend an open invitation to the mayor, the MM and all the persons working in “that” building to join me for a nice lunch on the corner of Spekboom and Grey Streets in Phalaborwa,” Hepburn added. “I would love to see how they would enjoy a meal when one has to contend with flies and a stench so strong that it makes you want to vomit, and then maybe they could go and explain to the residents in that area what they are going to do about it? The water system running through town, past Gholovans, is a solid stream of sewerage and nothing has been done to get it cleaned.” As motivation for his decision to lay charges against the management of the municipality, Hepburn sited a court case in which a local businessperson was found guilty on the exact same charges. “If everyone is equal under the law, then the politicians will face the same punishment for the same transgressions. We simply cannot do this anymore.”

Insurance drones are coming ■
Daniel Mminele
Absa’s new CEO ■ Roelof de Jonge South Africa’s third-largest bank Absa on Monday announced that former Reserve Bank governor Daniel Mminele would become the bank’s first black chief executive officer. Mminele was first mentioned as a possible replacement for Maria Ramos in February last year when she announced she’d be retiring after a decade as CEO. At the time, Ramos was replaced by René van Wyk as interim CEO, a former colleague of Mminele’s at the Reserve Bank. Mminele, 54, retired from the Reserve Bank in June 2019, when his second five-year term as deputy governor came to an end. He was born in 1965 in Phalaborwa, but went to school in Germany and received a German banking qualification, and a degree from the London Guildhall University. After working in the banking sector in the UK and Germany, he returned to South Africa in 1995 to join Commerzbank in Johannesburg. He then briefly worked at African Merchant Bank, before joining the Reserve Bank in September 1999. He served in the bank’s financial markets and international banking departments, before being appointed as deputy governor responsible for financial markets and international economic relations. Mminele was, among others, a member of the Reserve Bank’s monetary policy and financial stability committee. He is married with two children. In January 2018, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier bestowed the Great Order of Merit to Mminele for his work in furthering the German-South African relations. The Great Order of Merit is the highest honour Germany can pay to an individual for services to the country. Absa said its interim CEO René van Wyk would step down on January the 14th, but will remain with the Group as an executive director for handover purposes until January the 31st.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), 2.85 million small drones could fill the sky by 2022 and 450 000 of them will be used for commercial purposes. “Drones are shaping the way business is done across a variety of sectors,” explains Vera Nagtegaal, executive head of online comparison website Hippo.co.za. “The insurance industry is no exception to this, with some insurance companies having already started to use drones to assess damages and claims.” Nagtegaal points out that insurers have already been experimenting with drones – or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) – for about five years. “In the United States, for example, the FAA loosened regulations on drones used commercially and, as a result, many insurers started using them as a way to assist in building risk profiles and assessing
claims.” In South Africa, Old Mutual iWYZE passed the operational audit and demonstration flights required by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) and is now in the process of obtaining its remotely piloted aircraft licence. Once complete, the drones will be used in the assessment of car accidents. “Drones are also extremely helpful for property insurance assessments in hardto-reach places like roofs, as well as large structures like warehouses, office buildings or commercial boilers, which can be several stories high,” says Nagtegaal. “They can also assist with inspections of damage in the wake of disasters like earthquakes or flooding.” She adds that, previously, these types of inspections or assessments required scaffolding to be built, risky constructions to be scaled, or larger aircraft to be chartered. “Drones, however, do away with all of these requirements.” Drones are cheaper to use, they can travel faster and they are able to access unsafe areas unlike insurance assessors, who for instance are unable to visit hazardous sites after a disaster has occurred.
“Drones cut costs and time spent on inspections, allowing insurers to utilise resources more effectively. This ultimately has a benefit to the end consumer with their claims being processed more efficiently,” says Nagtegaal. Insurance fraud can also be limited if drones are employed effectively. Insurers will be able to capture aerial images of properties when policies are taken out, and these can be compared to drone camera images after any damage has occurred. In doing so, this ensures that policyholders do not claim for existing damage to property. “As with any advancement in insurance, the introduction of drones will serve to reduce false claims and expedite claims processes, which will contribute to the long-term efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the industry,” says Nagtegaal. “While the costs of establishing a functional drone service will be borne by insurance companies, this is the price of progress,” she says. “I do believe that this benefit everyone in the insurance value chain, including the employees who no longer have to place themselves in dangerous situations to assess damages.”

Granny’s Grumbles - ROYAL VISITS
The Rhodes Centenary Exhibition was held in 1953. I think the entire population went to Bulawayo for this show. Fifty acres filled with stands from eighteen different countries and an entire city of asbestos chalets to accommodate the thousands who flocked to Bulawayo for the event. The Queen Mother was due to arrive for the official opening. I shall never forget that five day holiday. It was the first (as a family) that we had experienced. Indeed, the longest journey from Salisbury to Bulawayo in our small Citroen – there were six of us – was a cause for excitement. We arrived three days before the official royal opening and our first day at the exhibition was amazing. The flowers and plants that dotted the entire area were spectacular, but unfortunately not for long. That evening there was a black frost – during the night we practically froze in our little chalet. Early the next morning my mother insisted that go into town and buy hot water bottles and a heater. We then returned
to the exhibition to see acres of black and dying plants. How on earth the organisers managed it I will never know but trucks of plants actually arrived from South Africa in the early hours of the next morning. There was no time to replant flowers and shrubs so they were left in their containers and inserted into the holes left by the dead plants and surrounded by moss and bark. The labour alone was astronomical and that night the plants were all covered just in case of more black frost. When the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret arrived everything looked tickety-boo and from then on everything ran without a hitch. Fast forward to 1980. Robert Mugabe had just become President of Zimbabwe and Prince Charles was arriving to join in the celebrations. The primary school that my youngest daughter attended was situated on the main road leading from the airport to the capital so the school was hyped up for the passing (on the road) of Prince Charles. Cindy (our youngest) was eight years old and for at least three weeks before the royal arrival the children had been briefed on what was going to happen. The school itself had been repainted and trees trimmed and the few shops on the opposite side of the road had been perked up. Now the nearest house to the school had years previously been owned by a fairly wealthy family and there was a tennis court, a swimming pool and a Roman summer house in the front garden. After the original tenants left the property it had fallen into disrepair and it appeared that directly after the elections either a chief or some parliamentary fellow had moved
his four wives onto the property. The tennis court became a goat pen and the swimming pool a giant wash area. Clothes hung over the sagging front fence. I saw the residence each day when I picked my daughter up from school and wondered if the owner had also been given instructions on a cleanup as I suddenly realised that the fence had been repaired, the goats removed, the swimming pool cleaned up and it also appeared that the house had been painted. However, it transpired that there was nobody at the hose and the municipality had moved in and sorted things out. On closer inspection it was patently obvious that only the front fence had been repaired and only the front wall of the house has been repainted. Presumably since Prince Charles, plus numerous heads of state were due to arrive the municipality was attempting to put its best foot forward. Came the great day – my youngest was beside herself with excitement – all the pupils were being given miniature Union Jacks to wave as His Royal Highness went by and also instructions on when to shout “Hoorah”. When I picked up my daughter at lunchtime I expected non-stop chatter as she was a great talker. Nothing like it – as far as Cindy was concerned there was no prince – the man that was SUPPOSED to be Prince Charles didn’t arrive on a horse, wore no crown and was even travelling in an old car. The “old car” was a Rolls Royce but our little darling thought that Mustangs and other American cars were obviously new. A week later the prince and his entourage left and so did most of the other dignitaries. A few days later the four wives moved back to their home and life returned to normal. Stanford Lake College is known as an institution of high academic repute and this year two of their matriculants maintained the narrative by each earning eight A’s in the last final examination. David Pullinger and Helene Werhahn merit this special mention. Pullinger placed in the top 5% in six or more subjects and achieved a rating of 7 in Life Orientation which earned him a position on the prestigious IEB Outstanding Achievements list. Furthermore, he was placed in the Top 1% in the country for Computer Applications Technology, Information Technology and Math – an extraordinary set of results and worthy of the highest praise. Anneri Thom was placed in the Top 1% for Afrikaans First Additional Language and Geography and Luka Spies placed in the Top 1% for Business Studies – also an outstanding achievement. In a press statement earlier this week, Stanford Lake College expressed their satisfaction at the results obtained by their pupils. “The wait is finally over and it has been well worth it. It is with immense pride that we congratulate the class of 2019; we are delighted by what they have achieved. Every candidate has worked to the best of their ability and has contributed to maintaining Stanford Lake College’s history of a 100% pass rate with 97.5 % of our pupils gaining a Bachelor Degree pass which qualifies them to study at Universities this year. Our pupils attained an average of 1.95 A’s per candidate. Sincere congratulations to our dedicated teachers from the reception classes in various junior schools where the foundation was laid, to the highly committed Stanford staff, who have put so much into facilitating these wonderful results. Whilst recognizing our top achievers, we are equally as proud of all our pupils who have achieved results of which we can all be proud. Well done to all involved, we look forward to following

The new Jaguar F-TYPE now more gorgeous ■ Jaguar Land Rover South Africa Purposeful, beautiful and timeless, the new Jaguar F-TYPE looks more dramatic than ever and embodies Jaguar’s design DNA in its purest form, according to this British sports and luxury car manufacturer. The perfect proportions are instantly recognizable, but the new F-TYPE looks even more focused and assertive, and it references the beautiful flowing forms from Jaguar’s rich sports car heritage. Super-slim pixel LED headlights with daytime running lights and sweeping direction indicators blend perfectly into the ‘liquid metal’ surfacing of the new clamshell bonnet. The new front bumpers and subtly enlarged grille delivers even more visual impact and presence. The rear haunches enhance the F-TYPE’s inherently dramatic, purposeful form, and sweep downwards to the slender rear LED lights inspired by the all-electric I-PACE Performance SUV. Inside, the driver-focused ‘1+1’ cabin envelops the occupants with luxurious materials such as Sienna Tan Windsor Leather, Suedecloth, Alcantara, and satin-finish Noble Chrome, while Jaguar’s craftsmanship is embodied in beautiful details such as monogram stitching on the seats and door trim. These touches blend seamlessly with the new 12.3-inch reconfigurable HD TFT instrument cluster and Touch Pro infotainment system. A subtly enlarged grille accentuates the new F-TYPE’s visual presence. The proportions of the classic form remain, but it is now wider and deeper and with a new hexagonal mesh pattern. Powertrain-specific exhaust pipes emerge from the rear diffuser, clearly signalling the new F-TYPE’s performance intent. The 221kW four-cylinder features a single, central, quadrilateral finisher, while the 280kW V6 is distinguished by its two large round tailpipes. The 423kW V8 is identified by quad, outboard exhausts with R branding. Whichever model customers choose, all can be made even more exclusive by specifying one of the 16 paints in the SVO Premium Palette. Each is available with the choice of gloss or satin, resulting in an exceptionally smooth finish and dramatic depth of colour. The new F-TYPE’s driver-focused interior, like the exterior, has evolved into a purer expression of the car’s elegance and performance. By concentrating on further refining the traditionally British Jaguar craftsmanship and adding discreet, beautiful details, the sense of luxury and sportiness has been heightened. The 1+1 cockpit now features a 12.3-inch reconfigurable HD TFT instrument cluster, with graphics unique to F-TYPE. This offers a choice of display themes, including full map but, as befits a true sports car, the default mode is characterised by the large central rev-counter. This feature and the gearshift light subtly convey the F-TYPE’s character and performance potential, digitally enhancing the mechanical theatre of the pulsing red ‘heartbeat’ of the start button and the
deployable centre air vents. The responsive, intuitive Touch Pro infotainment system’s 10-inch touchscreen, matched to three tactile rotary controllers, offers the perfect balance of analogue and digital driver controls. Lightweight slimline seats combine an ergonomically-optimised form with outstanding comfort, further enhanced by heating and cooling options. The seats come in two forms, namely Sport and Performance. The F-TYPE and F-TYPE R-Dynamic models come with the purest Sports version as standard. The Performance seat has more pronounced support at shoulder height, and is standard on the R and
First Edition models. Rich materials such as Windsor leather add a further touch of luxury, complemented by details such as the beautifully-crafted monogram stitch pattern, repeated in the door trim, and Jaguar Leaper and R motifs in the headrests. The seat belt guides are finished with discreet ‘Jaguar Est. 1935 markings’, which are proudly repeated on the glovebox release button surround. This subtle reference signifies the year the Jaguar name was first used by company founder Sir William Lyons to brand one of his beautiful, cars. The new Pixel LED headlights are exclusively available on the new F-TYPE R.
Limited edition Range Rover Sport straight from the Dark Side ■ Jaguar Land Rover South Africa Land Rover South Africa has handpicked a selection of options to create a limited run of only 24 Range Rover Sports packing some serious visual punch. The special 5.0 V8 Supercharged HSE Dynamics incorporate a Black Pack featuring menacing black bonnet and tailgate lettering, grille mesh and inner grille surround, and finishing blades on the fenders and bonnet vents. The package also includes upsized 22” alloys finished in Gloss Black. The Range Rover’s roof is also contrast black, and further black accents can be found inside where the headliner is wrapped in Ebony Morzine trim and seats are upholstered in Ebony Winsor Leather. Front seats are heated and cooled, and rear seat passengers can enjoy entertainment on a pair of 8” display screens. In addition to the black trimmings, the special Sport features a Drive Pro Pack with Blind Spot Assist, Adaptive Cruise
Control, High-speed Emergency Braking and Lane Keep Assist. A 360 degree Surround Camera uses four cameras to provide an overhead view of the vehicle, with capacity to display several different views at the same time to aid in parking in tight spaces. Configurable Ambient Interior Lighting will allow owners to set their own colour choice to offset the aggressive exterior, which is available in Fuji White, Indus Silver or Firenze Red. An added soft door close feature allows the last 6mm of door travel to swing softly into the latches for minimal effort and noise. Power comes from a 5.0 V8 Supercharged engine with 386kW and 625Nm fed through an 8-speed automatic transmission. Acceleration from 0-100km/h happens in 5.3 seconds and maximum speed is set at 250km/h. The limited edition is priced from R1 992 500 including Land Rover’s standard 5-year/100 000km maintenance plan and warranty.

Grobler dance for the pride of South Africa ■
Roelof de Jonge
Dance Fusion South Africa is the qualifying competition in South Africa. When a dancer competes in the competitive division at Dance Fusion, such a dancer has to score higher than 85% to qualify for the Get The Beat World Finals from the 18th until the 22th of December in Bangkok, Thailand. Martinus Grobler from The Dance Place in Tzaneen qualified with a platinum award of 97% at the Dance Fusion Limpopo to take part in the Championship division at the World Finals in Bangkok together with other participants from around the world. Grobler represented South Africa with a few other dancers from South Africa. Grobler competed in five items in total of which four items were solo performances and one a group performance. In the open solo category, Grobler achieved third place with a double platinum (90-94.99%) award. In the Hip-Hop solo division, Grobler did even better with an overall second place double platinum (90-94.99%) award. In the student choreography
solo event, he did South Africa proud again with an overall second placing with a double platinum (90-94.99%) award. In the Championship solo, he was part of the 20 best champions in senior division and in the Open group item, overall 2nd placing with a double platinum (90-94.99%) award. All dancers in all categories danced for a score, live commentary, a medal award and a certificate. The different awards the dancers could win were High Gold (0-79.99%), Platinum (80-89.99%), Double Platinum (9094.99%) and Diamond (95-100%). Only the first, second and third placings received a trophy, score, live commentary and a certificate. South Africa’s dancers competed against the likes from New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines amongst others. It was the first time that Grobler, nevertheless a South African team, took part in the World Finals event. The South African team surprised friend and foe with their great performance. Just to give our readers an indication of South Africa’s and especially Grobler’s performance, dancers participating at this international competition spend most of their day training and only a mere three hours on schoolwork. While in South Africa dancing is as an extra mural activity with dancers spending at the most two hours training a week.
2020 Virsekerbeker beloof tawwe stryde ■
Wedstryd bepalings: Saterdag 18 April – Ben Vorster vs Nelspruit Saterdag 25 April – Ben Vorster vs Transvalia Saterdag 9 Mei – Ben Vorster vs Kempton Park Saterdag 16 Mei – Rustenburg vs Ben Vorster Saterdag 23 Mei – Middelburg vs Ben Vorster Saterdag 25 Julie – Zwartkop vs Ben Vorster Saterdag 1 Augustus – Montana vs Ben Vorster.

Talent at Tzn Sports Day ■ Roelof de Jonge
The third annual Tzaneen Sports Day event was held on the 21st of December at the sports terrain Hoërskool Ben Vorster. This event which consisted out of 16 ten-a-side soccer teams and four netball teams, is aimed to provide an opportunity for young people as well as any active person from the community of Tzaneen to compete in sport. This year’s event included netball for the first time. Behind this initiative are childhood friends Sabarius ‘Zero’ Sedibe and Love Mayindi from events organisation Zero Love. Both friends competed their schooling careers at Hoërskool Ben Vorster. Sedibe finished his matric in 2014 and Mayindi in 2017. Sedibe is 23 years old and Mayindi celebrated his coming of age in 2019. Aside from organising sport events for Zero Love, Sedibe is also a music producer who have worked along with famous and multiple award winning South African rapper, songwriter and multi-platinum album producer Casper Nyovest on his album Thutu. Mayindi on the other hand is planning to study for a degree in communication to further his education through Rosebank College. According to Sedibe and Mayindi, they also host a Youth Sports event once a year specifically for the youth of Tzaneen and surrounding areas. Any person interested can however take part in the Sports Day event in December. The two friends say with these sport events they hope to lure especially the youth away from mischievous habits like crime and drug abuse. And also to identify raw and upcoming talent in the area, because the two friends from Zero Love believes there are much more talent to be identified. Mayindi is the owner and coach of Neen Boys United Football Club. Here he trains U/13 and U/15 football players. The U/15 players competes in the U/15 Mopani District as well as in the U/15 SAFA league. Mayindi said the U/13 players are being developed for the U/15 league. Mayindi said with additional sponsorship it will enable him to acquire much needed sports kits for the boys and equipment like soccer balls among others. “But for us to grow these two annual events, we have to get more sponsors involved. Thanks to sponsorship from Postnet which certainly contributed to the success of this event. Then also to all the participants, thank you very much, because without you competing in this event, it would not have been

possible. And then also to Hoërskool Ben Vorster for the willingness to make use of their sportsfields”, said the two organisers Sedibe and Mayindi. The prizes was also quite lucrative with the winning football team walking away with R10 000. The winning netball team won R5 000 and the second placed team received R1 000. The winning team is Kgapane Gunners, and they beat the Barcaboys 2-1 to walk away with the victory.
Some of the action taking place in the final match which the Gunners team win.
The Gunners team was the winners of the R10 000 prize after winning the final match.
Netball was included for the first time in this tournament.
