Airlink suspends Phala operations ■ Joe Dreyer Local passenger airline, Airlink have announced the suspension of all its Phalaborwa services as of the 10th of June this year. This, according to Karin Murray, the Sales and Marketing manager of the airline, is due to the economic decline the Phalaborwa region has experienced over recent years. “Phalaborwa has seen a noticeable decline in its economy in recent years, and with the associated reduction in air travel it is no longer viable for us to keep servicing the route,” Murray explained. “Coinciding with the above date, Airlink will be retiring the Jetstream 41 turbo prop aircraft. Given the decline in business and leisure travel to Phalaborwa, Airlink cannot justify the investment required to lengthen, widen and strengthen the runway to accommodate the Embraer 135 regional jet in place of the J41.” Twenty-one years ago, Airlink purchased the Phalaborwa airport. Almost immediately after the purchase, the company started with upgrading and redeveloping the facilities. This was done in anticipation of the promised tourism and hospitality infrastructure development which at the time, Northern Kruger National Park and Letaba Ranch were earmarked for. These developments never materialized. “While Phalaborwa and its surrounding areas have immense tourism potential and the Phal-
aborwa airport is perfectly positioned to catalyse this,” explained Murray. “The unfortunate reality is that not much has happened over the past twenty years.” Murray further stated that should Phalaborwa eventually become a tourism growth focal point as had originally been envisaged twenty years ago by the then Minister of Tourism, Mohammed Valli Moosa, Airlink will be ready and willing to commit to the airport upgrade that will enable the resumption of scheduled air services at Phalaborwa. Fortunately for inhabitants of the Ba-Phalaborwa area and business frequent flyers as well as tourists, Hoedspruit is only 75 kilometres away from
GLM deducts 40% from prepaid purchases ■ Joe Dreyer Residents of Modjadjiskloof were shocked when purchasing prepaid electricity only to discover that 40% of the purchase amount had been deducted in order to pay for outstanding rates and taxes bills. One resident provided Bulletin with prepaid electricity vouchers which showed that when she bought R200 worth of prepaid electricity credit, she received only 47.40 units after the Greater Letaba Municipality deducted an amount of R80 for her outstanding balance on the municipal account. We asked for clarification on this matter from the spokesperson for the GLM, Lovers Maenetje who explained that this practice was indeed an agreed upon method by both the municipality and the residents of Modjadjiskloof. “When the community of Modjadjiskloof requested that we (the GLM) bring in the prepaid metering system, there were some agreements in place that took place through a process of public participation,” Maenetje explained. “We then had to put in policy that if a municipal customer is due in credit of the municipal services, an amount of 40% towards their electricity purchase will be deducted until they settle their bill. We agreed that it be put on their statement and be able to reflect. It was a way in which we could agree to their request of the meter-
ing system. The community was thoroughly consulted on this matter.” A business owner in Modjadjiskloof contacted Bulletin and stated that he had received a legal notice from the lawyers for the GLM warning that he would have his services cut, should he not settle an outstanding account within 14 days. The business owner explained that the issue with the arrears had been thoroughly discussed with the GLM in the past, and that although he acknowledges that an amount is still outstanding, he has been querying the exact amount. “I want them to answer me on the amounts that I have queried and until they do, I will not pay this account as the amounts are incorrect.” We asked Maenetje whether the municipality has indeed handed over 4 000 rate payers to their legal department in order to force them to pay their outstanding bills. “Oh yes. we hired a debt collector to assist the Municipality to recoup almost half a billion Rands in debt owed to the Municipality. That process has already commenced.” Is it legal for the GLM to hire an outside contractor to collect their bad debts? “Governments across the country can outsource for services
which might cost them more to do it themselves. We do not have the financial muscle to do so, hence we decided to get a private company. They are only paid based on what they collect.” How much percentage does the service provider receive from the amount that they collect? “The service level agreement is a private document unfortunately so I cannot tell you that.” How did it happen that the municipality managed to accumulate almost half a billion in unpaid accounts? Surely there must have been measures in place to prevent this from escalating to the point where an institution finds itself in such a dire financial position? “There have been many measures like switching off the electricity in the past, resi-

Phalaborwa and Airlink offers twice daily services between Hoedspruit and OR Tambo International Airport. They also run a single daily service from Cape Town International Airport operating Embraer E-jets. “Airlink apologizes for any inconvenience resulting from the service suspension. Customers holding confirmed tickets for travel from the 11th of June 2020 will be offered a full refund. Alternatively, if customers prefer, they may elect to be re-accommodated on Airlink’s Hoedspruit services.” The Phalaborwa airport will remain open for general aviation traffic from the 11th of June 2020 for the time being.

dents would then come and enter into an agreement for payment and would not honour that agreement. It has been a huge struggle, especially with Kgapane residents because they fall under Eskom electricity supply. A lot has been done but there is no cooperation,” said Maenetje. According to her, the credit which is deducted from the purchase of prepaid vouchers is done by the GLM and not the debt collection company. The debt collectors, according to her, operate via SMS messages and phone calls to the customers with outstanding debts and make payment arrangements with the GLM accordingly. At the time of going to print we had still not been provided with the name of the service provider appointed to handle the debt collections.

“Must a white man beg to go home and die?” ■
Joe Dreyer
An elderly man was allegedly subjected to inhumane treatment and severe trauma at the hands of one of the doctors at the notorious Van Velden hospital in Tzaneen. This is not the first time that the state of government hospitals has been highlighted in this publication. This latest incident concerns a 71-year old man who was rushed to Van Velden to receive emergency medical attention after a stab-wound to his chest which he sustained at his home in Georges Valley. Fanie Pienaar and his wife, Rena (63) relocated from Lushof plots outside Tzaneen to a small stead along the R528 in Georges Valley. That evening after the move on Saturday the 23rd of February, they invited their new neighbour to celebrate their new home in typical South African fashion. “We started a fire and I asked my wife if she could start making us salads and “braai broodjies” while I started grilling the meat,” explained Fanie. “I had just put the meat on the grill and used a steak knife to cut through one of the steaks when I saw movement in the garden out the corner of my eye. I turned to see what it was and in the process I lost my balance and fell off the veranda into the bush. I don’t know how long I was out for, but when I awoke, I saw the handle of the steak knife protruding from my chest.” Fanie pulled out the knife and rushed to his wife. Being a retired nurse, she knew they needed an ambulance and phoned their son, who is also a paramedic. An ambulance arrived on scene and transported Fanie to Van Velden hospital where he was tended to by an unknown doctor. The doctor refused to provide his name to the Pienaar’s. “We arrived at the hospital and the nurses told my wife she was not allowed to be by my side as they wheeled me into a room. The doctor brought a drainage device (inter-coastal drain) which was a very long needle with a pipe attached to a bottle. He turned me on my side and literally jammed this needle with the pipe into my ribcage. The pain was excruciating, and I literally urinated on myself during the ordeal. They gave me no pain medication and no anaesthetic, he just stabbed this steel pipe through my ribs and pulled it out, leaving this pipe inside me draining the blood into the bottle.” Fanie lost consciousness and when he awoke, he was in a room with his wife next to him. By the side of his bed there stood four bottles of the blood that had been drained from him and the pipe was still draining blood from his chest. Later the hospital staff moved him to a ward, and he was put on a drip and given antibiotics. His wife was not permitted to enter the ward with him. “I told the nurse that something was wrong as I felt terribly sick and the pain was unbearable. I pleaded for something for the pain and she brought out a needle which she stuck into the drip in my hand. I asked her what that was, and she said I should just keep quiet as it was for the nausea. So I asked her again what the medication was as I am not reacting well to it, but I received no answer.” According to Fanie, the nurses gave him tablets for the pain, but he was not told what the name of the tablets are. The medication made him suffer from severe hallucinations and he described seeing demons and other hellish figures coming out of the ceiling towards his bed. He said that he told the staff about these hallucinations and that he was still feeling extremely nauseas, but they dismissed his concerns and told him that he needed to relax. This continued for two days, during this time he suffered severe cramps and his legs started swelling. The demonic images and other hallucinations persisted unabated. “The doctor eventually came to check on me and he said that they will have to remove the drain and insert a new one. Terrified at the
prospect, I pleaded for an anaesthetic before they continue, but the doctor – who still refused to identify himself to me – turned me on my side and pulled the pipe out of my rib cage! It was pain which I thought I had never in my life experienced… but little did I know it would soon get worse.” The doctor, after removing the old drain, took the new drainage pipe and tried to force it back into the existing hole in the side of Fanie’s ribcage. The pipe would not fit into the hole and the doctor attempted to force it in without success. Then, he asked for a scalpel and told Fanie to stand up and lift his arms after which he started cutting the hole bigger with the scalpel. All while Fanie was completely awake and without any anaesthetic. When he finally managed to force the new pipe into the existing wound, he shockingly started stitching up the wound he created with the scalpel. “I screamed in pain and urinated on myself again. It was like I was being continuously stabbed by a knife-wielding assailant and nobody was rushing to my aid. I pleaded with the doctor to please stop as he was busy killing me, but he ignored me and continued. I cried that I wanted him to stop and that I wanted to go home, but they refused.” After stitching up the wound, the nurses gave him medication and he passed out. At visiting hours his wife arrived again and this time the doctor was in the room too. “He told my wife to leave the room as he wanted to examine me and visiting hours was the only time he had available to do so. When he had finished, there was only five minutes of visiting hours left and my wife was not permitted to see me. I asked for a bedpan and was told that that I had to use the bathroom if I needed to. The food was not fit for human consumption and almost everyone in the ward with me refused to eat what they had dished for us. This is just some of what I had to endure until finally I demanded to sign myself out of that hell and go home to die in peace.” Finally, a week after he was submitted to the hospital, he was permitted to sign himself out. He otics and was given a prescription for antibisent on his way. “I asked the doctor for a
medical note that I could take to my employer, but I never received one and was told to come collect one that following Monday. We called the hospital from home that Monday morning to ask if the prescription and the medical note was ready so that we could come and collect it, but a man named Robert said that my file was missing.” When the Pienaar’s arrived at Van Velden on Monday morning, the file had been found and he received his medication. But Fanie noticed that the file they presented to him was not the file that he had seen during the week he was in that ward. “It was a different file and furthermore, the note that was in the file read that the doctor had discharged on the Saturday, 29th of February, which was not true as I had discharged myself.” When this reporter interviewed Fanie Pienaar earlier this week at his workplace, the wound was still festering, and a clear liquid was continuously being excreted. The liquid had a terrible odour and was running down the side of his body constantly. He still struggles to move and cannot stand up from the chair he is seated in. This is severely affecting his ability to perform his duties at his place of work and Fanie fears that he may lose his job. “I am still seeing the visions, though not as frequently, and I still suffer from the swelling of my legs and terrible pain. I was in that hell-hole for a week without food and without moving my bowls. Now, I struggle to hold down anything I attempt to eat. It has gotten to the point where I have even considered killing myself.” Bulletin contacted van Velden hospital and spoke to Robert Ngobeni, the hospital’s quality assurance manager. He denied that the information in the file was incorrect and blamed the state of the hospital’s wards on a shortage of staff. “We receive a lot of complaints from the public about the cleanliness of the hospital and I can confirm that we face challenges in this department, but I would cast the blame for this on the fact that we have a staff shortage.” Ngobeni was not willing to answer questions relating to the medical treatment of Pienaar and referred us to the hospital CEO, Dr J Selatlha. We asked Dr Selatlha for the name of the doctor who treated Pienaar, but he refused and said that he was not allowed to speak to the media and referred us to the Limpopo Health Department spokesperson, Neil Shikwambane. At the time of going to print had not received any comment from Shikwambane, but we have sent him an inquiry. In the meantime, the Pienaar’s have sought legal advice on the matter.
Ramathuba out to allay fears of Covid-19 outbreak ■
Jeff Jackson
Limpopo MEC for Health, Dr Phophi Ramathuba and her directors took to the streets on Monday to dispel fears that even in Limpopo there might be some Covid-19 infections. This after ten students from various TVET colleges in Limpopo just arrived back from China “unexpectedly” according to Ramathuba. Some of the students also confirmed to the media that they were not quarantined when they arrived in South Africa. It seems that this makeshift roadshow by the MEC and her department was aimed at dismissing the rumours that these students were not quarantined. Ramathuba said that the stu-
dents were all checked upon their arrival at OR Tambo international airport as per the established protocol. This comes in the wake of claims by Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize that seven people had been diagnosed with disease. Again, the minister had just announced that though the number of infections might increase, people should not treat this virus as though it were a gorilla that had come to swallow whole communities. Two cases of infection were reported in Kwazulu-Natal and one in Gauteng while on Monday another four cases were announced. In Limpopo, just recently, the department of Higher Education took students from each of the TVET colleges in the province on a study-vacation to China where the pandemic broke out. Amid the outbreak of the disease the students returned to the country where, after some days after their arrival, they claimed that they were not checked in China or in Limpopo when they arrived. In the Mopani district there are four Mopani TVET colleges. There is one in Tzaneen, one in Maake near Lenyenye, one Giyani and one at Ga-Kgapane which means four people may have returned with the virus and mixed with people within their communities before
MEC Ramathuba appealed to those students to isolate themselves. Addressing the media in Polokwane on Monday, Ramathaba said that like any other international arrivals, the students were subjected to examinations at OR Tambo before they were allowed to move to the province. Ramathuba, in a late move
to avert the disaster called upon those students to isolate themselves while the health officials will be making contact with them. She added that she confirmed that they were checked in China before departing. Ramathuba also travelled to Phalaborwa where she addressed workers of Palabora Copper on the COVID19 virus.

Renaming of taxi rank a problem
Corrupt politicians receive a lashing
■ Jeff Jackson
■ Jeff Jackson
The late taxi owner and leading member of the South African Communist Party in Lenyenye, Disco Letsoalo, will be remembered by the ANC in the sub-region through the renaming of the now ‘under construction’ Lenyenye taxi rank. Branches of the ANC and other structures of the tripartite alliance were asked to sell the name to other members as well as to defend the decision. The announcement was made by the chairperson of the Mark Shoppe sub-region of the ANC and also the current mayor of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM), Maripe Mangena last week in the presence of the national and the provincial leadership of both alliance and the ruling ANC. “As the sub-region, we had come to a decision to name some of the infrastructure in the area after the names of the leaders of the ANC. After we had conversed with the local branch we decided that the new taxi rank under construction be named after Disco Letsoalo.” Letsoalo who resided at Bornfire Maponya street, died in 2003 while he was a member of the (SACP) and taxi owner at then Bakgaga Taxi Association (BTA). “We had, as the subregion, resolved to name
some of the infrastructure programmes in the area of Tzaneen under the names of the struggle heroes. After consulting with the leadership of the branch here (referring to Bornfire Maponya branch) we decided to rename the new road that had been built at Khujwana and Moime after Puku Sekgotodi and the taxi rank after Disco Letsoalo.” said Mangena. “We appeal to branches of the ANC to introduce the names to the community so that when we would be going public, opposition parties cannot have their way and oppose.” Though it is not by any means a new idea to name new developments after “struggle heroes” the project has never seen the light of day. Two years ago when a Lephepane-based community activist, Makolobe Nkgapele died, it was promised that the Khujwana-Lephepane access road will be named after him. But nothing came of that. Again, when the then driver of the GTM mayor, Marothi Letsoalo, died while in the service of the municipality, the mayor told the community that the hall at Lenyenye or one of the infrastructure projects that is in the pipeline in that area, would be named after his driver. The driver was a member of the Sub-region executive committee and chairperson of the local police forum. This too has not happened.
Bulletin is very concerned ■ Joe Dreyer It is with concern that Bulletin needs to inform our readers that a meeting which was scheduled for last week Friday at the Tzaneen showgrounds was cancelled. This meeting was planned to allow for all stakeholders to meet with the engineers responsible for the construction of the Tzaneen dam wall project. This project has now once again slipped into the dark abyss of political ineptness
and seems that a final completion date will not be arrived at any time soon. In the meantime we have also not been able to update our readers with the weekly dam level figures as the Department of Water and Sanitation have had issues with their computer systems. Another concern is the total silence of the GTM on matters concerning the independent state of Claude Wheatley street where taxi drivers have literally staged a successful coup d’état. We won’t be holding our breaths.
“It is not that we do not see that the electoral fortunes of the ANC is fading. It is blowing south but someone is continuing with stealing the resources of the people without shame. We will see people praising a leader with all the names including those of his forefathers just for stealing the resources of the public. Deployees of the ANC are not there in government to serve the interests of the party and its masters, but the public at large.” These were the words of the Limpopo secretary of the African National Congress (ANC) Soviet Lekganyane during the memorial service of the former GTM PR councillor and recently unemployed former ex-combatant of the Mkhonto We Sizwe, Jack Puku Sekgotodi. The service was held at the Lenyenye community hall. Sekgotodi was buried in the new cemetery after a service at the local stadium on Saturday. Puku Sekgotodi who was the brother of current GTM employee, Modibe Sekgotodi, was a former MK soldier and was part of the South African Youth Congress (SAYCO) when the ANCYL was still banned. He served as the Proportional councillor for the GTM. He was also responsible for security in the organisation through the MKVA. Lekganyane called on deployees of the ANC not to forget that that they were not sent to government in order to serve their interests but those of the poor people in many communities in Limpopo.
He said members should not remain silent when they notice corruption because they would then be like those who are surprised when the resources have all been looted but pretend as if they were not there when it happened. “People should not wait for when pensions of the workers are to be used to bail out defunct parastatals like Eskom as they were there when it was being looted. People should not be surprised when our aeroplanes are not operating, because they were there when things went wrong. People are not supposed to be surprised when the trains go without windows because they were there when Prasa was looted,” added Lekganyane. Lekganyane said though it might not be appropriate, councillors should not forget the people who take part in door-to-door campaigns because reports are that when it was time to hire people for the EPWP workers, councillors hired their friends. He also raised concerns that when people enter government complexes, they found that people working there are relatives of ANC deployees. Surprisingly, the group of councillors who are opposed to the retaining of Maripe Mangena as the mayor of the GTM for a second term, raised eyebrows when the time came for him to co-direct the programme. Some walked out of the hall while their leaders were nowhere to be seen. Divisions in the ruling party displayed itself when the chairperson, Stan Mathabatha, did not show up for the programme. He does not see eye to eye with Che Selane.
Workers cry hunger ■ Jeff Jackson Dozens of community members who were contracted to work on the construction of the recently completed Khujwana-Moime tar road are angry after they had not paid one month since the 15th of January when the project folded hands. They claim that the money they were paid was not enough and that during the heavy rainfall when they could work on the project, they were not paid and this would not be taken lightly. The project which was initially aimed at alleviating dust and mud on the way to the newly established Lenyenye cemetery near Khujwana, was later extended after some councillors asked the road be converted into an access road to connect the communities of Moime, Khujwana, Lenyenye and the Moime-Shikwambana settlements.
Former employees who reside at Khujwana complained that even the community liaison officer is no longer in contact with them while members of the steering committee are nowhere to be seen after the completion of the project. One of these former employees said that failure to be paid the outstanding money left them stranded as they could use the money to get themselves some work given that they are now unemployed. However, the work to construct the 14 kilometres-long road in what was termed the upgrading of the Moime-Khujwana road from gravel to tar, has been completed. Except for the few outstanding bridges still under construction, the road is clear and ready for use. Greater Tzaneen Municipality, mayor, Maripe Mangena, addressing the residents of Lenyenye described it as very wide and good to drive on.

Granny’s Grumbles -ANYTHING YOU CAN DO
When I was a chubby and freckled teenager I had the quaint idea that I should be as good if not better than the boys at anything they did. It took me years to realise that the last thing on earth a man wants is a woman who can beat him at anything. When I was twelve my parents had a very good friend who was a dirt-track motorbike champion. There were monthly meetings at the local dirt track and we spent the day watching all our heroes in action. Our friend was killed whilst racing overseas so our monthly picnics at the dirt track ceased and some time later the club folded. Years later an advertisement in the local paper indicated that the dirt track monthly meetings were about to start again and this time there would be micro midget cars also involved. Anybody (male or female) who was interested could join and be part of the fun so I contacted the said number and before you could say “Mac the Knife” I was the secretary and taking the minutes of the monthly meetings and attending all the the race meetings. After a couple of months somebody came up with the idea of there being a midget car ladies race – this was assuming that the men had no objection to letting the ladies use their cars. I managed to find a male who was willing to let me use his car and did pretty well against the other ladies. Since the young man who was allowing me to use his car was rather nice and I was becoming a little arro-
gant about my expertise behind the steering wheel after a few months I ventured to suggest that some of the ladies could very likely feature rather well against the men, myself included. “Let’s see what we can arrange” he said. The next meeting he told me his plan. I would take his place in the third race. I would be driving his car with his helmet, goggles and leather jacket. His younger brother would push start me and he himself would be well out of sight. What a good idea – or so I thought! I should mention at this stage that Ivan (for that was his name) shared the top rankings with a man called Joe. There was rather obvious bad blood between them so I had the idea that if I could at least keep up with Joe I would impress Ivan. The race started – it was fairly obvious that Joe’s car was faster than mine but when we were halfway into the second lap he slowed down to take a rather awkward corner on the inside. My perfect opportunity, or so I thought. As I tried to overtake him on the outside his car slithered (?) into mine which overturned onto its side and I skidded for at least ten metres since I was hit by another car from the rear. Now I had always been of the impression that real leather jackets were indestructible. Alas I was wrong. Two race marshals who rushed to my aid and unstrapped me saw there was fairly large amount of flesh hanging from my arm. They obviously thought I was Ivan – the one said “You’re a bloody idiot – he always does that to anyone who tries to overtake on the outside as you of all people should know”. I said nothing – I think I was in shock because I had never skidded sideways along a dirt track previously. When we reached the medical aid tent somebody removed my helmet and jacket and it became fairly obvious that I was not Ivan. For once in my life I was extremely glad I was a female. The change in my treatment was immediate – gently laid on a bed and two medics tending my wounds. No more being dragged along by my armpits and told what a fool I was. An hour later my left arm was bound up fairly solidly and one of my friends said she would drive me home.
Notwithstanding the fact that I was eighteen years of age and had been working for two and a half years I still lived at home. In those days if you lived under your parents’ roof they had total jurisdiction over you and they let you know it. My mother let me have it the moment I entered the house and finished off by reminding me that I was to be the chief bridesmaid at my best friend’s wedding the following Saturday. My best fiend was having one of the biggest weddings seen in our area –I could well imagine how she would feel if I was wearing an enormous bandage that stretched most of the way up my arm. I had not been looking forward to the affair anyway as I was expected to wear a frothy pink dress that made me look like a pregnant fairy. No – my friend was not amused but fortunately the nurse who was dressing the wound daily said I should relax – she was sure that by Friday the bandage could be removed and something to dry up the wound would be fine. Gentian violet was a favourite for drying up wounds and she was applying it liberally to my arm on the Friday when I reminded her that I was actually a bridesmaid the following day. Not a problem – a nice thin bandage to cover the purple and a tiny gold safety pin to hold it together – nobody would see anything. The big day arrived – everything was going well until the bride and groom took to the floor to dance – the best man (who I had never met before) indicated that we should also take the floor. He had just arrived from Cape Town where evidently the latest rock ‘n roll moves were streets ahead of Rhodesia. He meant to teach me an entirely new routine which was fine until the bandage became loose and fell about me showing a bright purple arm. To cut a long story short – we found a secluded corner where a hasty repair job was put in place as there were more photos to be taken. The bandage was put on so tightly that it never again came loose and the rest of the wedding reception went off without a hitch. I never again mentioned women racing against men!

Mokgala too tough for Tuffy ■
Roelof de Jonge
Herbert Mokgala from the Marula Club conquered the tough 42,2km race in the Spar Tzaneen Tuffy 4-in-1 Marathon on Saturday the 7th of March at Lombard Avo at the Agatha Old Coach House Road. The Tzaneen Tuffy Marathon, organised by the Tzaneen Marathon Club, is widely regarded amongst the road running fraternity as a perfect test in preparation for the upcoming Comrades Ultra Marathon because of its mountainous nature. The traditional sheer drops and climbs of the Tuffy Marathon did not hinder Mokgala as he gradually pulled away from his rivals to enjoy a comfortable lead to the finish point. This athlete crossed the line in a time of
02:51:50. Behind Mokgala, the eventual second place finisher from the Nedbank Club, Thompson Magagane, had a tussle with Happy Ubisi from the Phalaborwa Road Running Club. Magagane eventually managed to create some space between him and Ubisi to secure the second place in his favour, his time 03:08:49. Ubisi followed soon after in third place with a time of 03:12:32. The first women athlete to complete the Tuffy 42,2km Marathon was Pearl Hughes from the Polokwane Athletics Club. Hughes completed the Tuffy in a time of 03:45:09.

Allesbeste step forward as Eisteddfod sponsor ■ Roelof de Jonge The latest News from Merensky High School is that the unique MDDA Eisteddfod will, for the second time, be hosted from the 24th of August to the 3rd of September this year. The local agricultural giant, Allesbeste, stepped in as the main sponsor and as their motto states, Quality Through Passion, is in line with the goals of this Eisteddfod. The event will be known as the Allesbeste MDDA Eisteddfod. In the line-up for the Eisteddfod will be professional judges from various performance industries such as Bobby van Jaarsveld (vocals judge) and Marijke Bezuidenhout (dance judge). They have already been secured for the Eisteddfod. Apart from the usual sections namely drama, art, vocal, photography, dance and instrumental, the Allesbeste MDDA Eisteddfod now also boasts with a brand-new addition, namely short films. In this section competitors can submit a video of two to three minutes, either with dialogue or without. The best video will have its premiere during the art and photography prize giving event. What sets this Eisteddfod apart from other such events is the fact that competitors present a short programme, instead of delivering different genres at different times. Last year’s adjudicators were impressed and mentioned that the performance bar was raised with the quality of this Eisteddfod. All the relative information is available on the website at www.eisteddfod.hsmerensky.co.za Online entries are already open. For more information, persons contact Mari Weber at 082 440 1555 or on mweber@ hsmerensky.co.za

Netbal Vossies veg moedig teen Pietersburg ■
