4 MARITZ Street Aqua Park Tzaneen POSTNET # 911 PRIVATE BAG X 4019 TZANEEN, 0850
Pandemonium broke out in the Lenyenye CBD on Wednesday morning when pensioners who had gathered to receive their monthly social grants, had to run for their lives after two gunmen shot into the air shortly after they robbed officials at the Post Office during a cash in transit delivery. The incident happened just a hundred metres from the police station and behind the magistrate court while the court was in session. According to witnesses the business of the day began as usual with hawkers packing their wares, waiting for the pensioners who were gathering in a tent in front of the post office. And just when work to dispense the money was due to start, all hell broke loose. Immediately after the bag of money was collected by the thugs, gun shots were fired in the air while the gang ran to an awaiting getaway bakkie and sped off. According to one witness, two men stood at the back entrance of the post office from early in the morning. For the most part they apparently did not appear suspicious until the moment they were seen storming out of the building brandishing guns and clutching a bag amid gunshots. “The fact that members of the public ran for cover, actually assisted the thugs in their getaway because they just disappeared as if they were part of the group running from the gunmen.” After the police arrived, pensioners gathered in the tent again expecting to be called to receive their grants. But the post office did not reopen and people started to use the nearby ATMs to withdraw their grants. Shortly thereafter the ATMs ran empty until more cash was delivered. Though it was the first time that the post office was robbed, many ATM’s were bombed by thugs in the vicinity. No arrests were made. In the past, residents of Lenyenye township used their community hall as a distribution point for the grants until recently when it was decided to dispense at the post office. There had never been an incident until this week. Relatives of some of the pensioners had to be called to the scene to take them to the nearby Maake Plaza to access the banks and the shops. “Lenyenye was different on Wednesday.”

The Limpopo MEC for Health, Phophi Ramathuba has announced that her department will soon launch the Covid-19 booster campaign in anticipation of the so-called “fifth wave”. This campaign will kick off in the Vhembe District today, the 6th of April. This comes as the department is reportedly worried by the increase in the seven day average of new Covid 19 cases from 11 to 28. According to the department, Covid-19 vaccination remains a key public health prevention intervention for the pandemic. The department said that during the recent “fourth wave”, their analysis report showed significant decline in mortality and hospitalisation. “With the anticipated fifth wave which will be driven by a new variant, Omicron variant B4 and B5 recently reported in South Africa, recent data suggest that the booster shot offers extra protection from these emerging variants,” the department said in their official statement. “The purpose of this planned campaign is to improve booster uptake amongst the high-risk population and improve vaccine uptake to the younger age cohorts. Our current observation is that we are facing decreasing immunity among population from both natural and vaccine induced immunity as compared to during the fourth wave hence it is important for the people to know that booster doses provides extra protection from breakthrough infections, and that boosted persons are more likely to have mild infection. We therefore call upon people to take this opportunity and visit our vaccination sites to get their booster shots”, said MEC Ramathuba. ***Editor’s comment: Ironically, this is the same MEC who made the bold statement at the recent Tuffy marathon that she cannot remember ever signing a death certificate for anyone who was a runner. (No, I’m not joking, she said this three times during a live stream over the department’s Facebook page). This despite an MEC not signing death certificates, and the deceased’s death certificate not stating whether they were athletes or not. This same Health Department cannot adequately manage their own hospitals, and has yet to update us on the latest developments regarding the hospital in Phalaborwa which they allegedly refurbished to be utilized as a Covid wing. But we need to trust our wellbeing is in good hands.

The police arrested another 871 suspects as part of their ongoing weekly operations conducted between the 25th of April and the 3rd of May. Members of the Limpopo Highway Patrol Team (LHP) were patrolling around the R37 road in the Mecklenburg policing area when they came across a white Nissan NP200 bakkie parked in the middle of the road next to Mathule cross with the lights on and the engine running. The officers stopped to investigate and found one male occupant. He started insulting the officers when they requested that he move the vehicle to the side of the road. Upon further inspection it was discovered that the individual was drunk and in possession of alcohol inside the motor vehicle. Police asked the driver to step outside the vehicle but he refused until minimum force was used and during the squabble, the suspect assaulted one member while resisting arrest. Subsequently, the officers managed to arrest the suspect who is currently facing charges of driving under influence of alcohol, assault on Police and resisting arrest. The 41-year old suspect was later identified as a member of the Police service stationed at Burgersfort K9 Unit. Meanwhile, a 38 year-old foreign national was arrested in Monsterlus village under Sekhukhune District for allegedly being in possession of illicit cigarettes. Police received information about a supermarket at Moratiwa complex and quickly rushed to the premises. Upon arrival, the manager of the store introduced himself and granted permission to search. Police discovered 89 cartons containing Yes and Remington Gold cigarettes which were concealed inside the store. The manager was immediately arrested for being in possession of illicit cigarettes worth an estimated street value of R9 700.00. Four suspects aged between 23 and 30 were arrested in Sebayeng policing area for attempted murder, possession of suspected stolen property, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Police received information about the suspects who were at Nel’s tavern and upon arrival found the suspects seated inside a silver Toyota Yaris motor vehicle. The vehicle was searched and one unlicensed firearm with ammunition, cigarettes, a box of MAQ washing powder, vanilla custards and body
lotions valued at R10 000 suspected to be stolen property from a local shop, were confiscated during their arrests. Members of Provincial Organized Crime in cooperation with Crime Intelligence were monitoring a syndicate dealing in drugs at a rental flat in Tarentaal, South Gate outside Polokwane. An intelligence driven operation was conducted resulting in the arrest of a 38 year-old foreign national on possession of Kat and Crystal meth charges. The drugs were worth an estimated street value of R80 000. Another milestone was achieved on the 28th of April at around 14:00 when members of the Flying Squad received a tipoff about a male suspect who was selling drugs in the Polokwane CBD at the corner of Jorisson and Compensatie streets and proceeded to the scene. A 26 year-old male suspect was spotted and Police asked to search him and discovered 81 sachets of nyaope drugs with a street value of R15 000, and R50 000 in cash believed to be gained for selling the drugs. The suspects have already started appearing in their local Magistrate courts facing charges that include murder, robberies, rape, driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal possession of firearm and ammunition, possession of suspected stolen property, Contravention of Immigration Act, possession and dealing in drugs, resisting arrest, possession of suspected stolen properties and illicit cigarettes amongst other offences. During these operations Police seized large number of counterfeit cigarettes, dangerous weapons, large quantities of dagga, dagga plants, quantities of crack cocaine, some Crystal Meth, Nyaope, four firearms, large quantities of liquor, 17 knives and one stolen vehicle was recovered. A total of 845 fines were also issued.

Jetty 3 off limits Tiny soccer ball rescued but clean at least ■ Billy Sibuyi

An adult female hedgehog, one of South Africa’s protected species, had somewhat turned into a soccer ball in Lulekani after being kicked around by people when it managed to make its way to the township last week. According to Eugene Troskie from the Phalaborwa Natural Heritage Foundation (PNHF) who came to the rescue of the animal, it had suffered serious injuries due to it being kicked around. Troskie told Bulletin that it was quite interesting to see animals that are not common in these areas come out in Lulekani as this was the third hedgehog in over a year that has made its way to the township. Each time one of these animals made its way into the township it was brutally attacked by residents. The hedgehog, which was rescued after one of the residents in Lulekani notified a veterinarian who in turn notified PNHF, had a quarter of its skull exposed from the wounds it sustained, its scalp was torn off, and the ear canal was also exposed as half of its ear was severed. Hedgehogs have a relatively long lifespan for their size as larger species of hedgehogs live between four to seven years in the wild with some recorded living up to 16 years, and smaller species live between two to four years.
According to Troskie, wounds like that on a human being would be fatal. “So that was serious as they did some damage to the hedgehog which also had internal bleeding. Its wounds were also infected because of it curling into a ball when it was kicked around”. Troskie told Bulletin that after they received the news, they immediately attended to it and arranged for it to be sedated, cleaned, and given fluids to attempt to save its life. Under the care of veterinarians, Dr Lani Anagnostou and Dr Fernando Pradosnieto, from the Phalaborwa bird and animal clinic, the hedgehog is recovering well. Troskie said that the small animal would be released back into the wild after it has fully recovered but was not sure when that would be. “Her wounds are looking better and are cleaned regularly, she has also started eating again, and the internal bleeding has stopped and that is a good sign,” concluded Troskie. Troskie pleaded with the community that should they find hedgehogs; they should not try to catch these animals or kick them around as they are harmless and are good to have around as they eat mice and other pests.
■ Roelof de Jonge “The clean-up of Jetty 3 over the weekend was a great success because local residents and businesses like Talisman Tzaneen, Kempston Logistics, The Red Bin, BF Fuels, Oceana Plant Hire, offered their time and resources to help make Jetty 3 a habitable public space for all of us to enjoy,” said DA Caucus Leader, Rene Pohl. “We look forward to your continued support and the participation of the community in our efforts to restore the beauty of our public spaces and unlock their economic potential.” The Democratic Alliance Ward and PR councilors in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality came together over the weekend and orchestrated a mass-cleanup of the facilities at the once pristine public spaces at Jetty 3. Chrizelle Dreyer and Irad Mamaregane The group was assisted by teams from various local businesses and a handful of citizens and spent the better part of Saturday raking up leaves, fishing garbage from the bushes and cutting away shrubbery. “This is to demonstrate to the public and our voters that the DA not only cares, but is willing to get things done,” added Pohl. “We will work with the community of Tzaneen and local businesses to ensure that our town is clean, habitable and can be enjoyed by all of us.” Thus far there is still no clear indication of whether the Jetty 3 will soon be open to the public again as for some inexplicable reason, residents still need to obtain a permit from the council offices. The permit, to add to the mystery of this new rule, is free of charge. ***Editor’s Comment: It is remarkable that a municipality can grant access to all other public spaces, except the one facility that most enjoyed by the majority of its citizens without a legitimate reason. This same municipality is incapable of preventing the illegal squatters living on the banks of the dam and using the facilities at Jetty 3, but is worried about access control by its ratepayers. Initially the excuse was Covid, we do not know what the new excuse is, other than perhaps the fact that the Jetty 3 facility is situated in the only ward the ANC has never managed to gain control over. It appears as though this is a political power play. Rene Pohl
Sebela family joins GTM ■ Jeff Jackson The mayor of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM), Gerson Molapisane has invited the Sebela royal family from Hweetse village in the Leolo mountainous area outside Julesburg, in ward 26 of the municipality, to form part of the royal families that are represented in the municipality. This happened over the weekend during a visit by the mayor to the area where he met with Kgosi Clement Sebela. The Sebela family royalty was recognised in 2018 after they were deposed in 1942, and next week on the 13th of May the new chief will be inaugurated in an event to be attended by Cogta MEC Basikopo Makamu. Molapisane also invited the Sebela Traditional Council to appoint people who will be their representatives in the council as currently traditional leaders sit in the Executive Committee (EXCO) of the council.
“I want traditional leaders to have a greater say in the affairs of the municipality,” the mayor said. He added that he had decided to form a local house of traditional leaders to co-ordinate issues affecting traditional leaders and for the traditional leaders to contribute fruitfully to the council. He was accompanied by the chief whip of the council, Given Malatji, and the ward 26 councillor Thulani Shihangule. The inauguration of Kgosi Sebela will bring to the fore eight traditional representatives in the council after Modjadji, Maake, Valoyi, Bathlabine, Mamitwa, and Mamabolo. During the meeting, Kgosi Sebela said that Molapisane was the first mayor to visit the family and called on him to improve access roads as well as to install a high mast streetlight in the vicinity of the royal palace. He also promised to work hand in hand with the municipality. The royal council is constituted through Masilo Sebela as the chief councillor, Mokgadi Sebela Rasebotsa as the Whip (Kgadi), Queen Sebela is the secretary while the former Municipal Manager of the GTM Mabakane Mangena is the spokesperson.

The ‘art’ of Hoedspruit in Artconcilio ■ Billy Sibuyi A Hoedspruit-based artist whose paintings hang all over the world, Vanessa Lomas, has had a passion for art from the tender age of three. Born in Klerksdorp but would always be travelling away from the city lights during school holidays to nature surrounded areas, Lomas developed a passion for nature. She told Bulletin that it was when she went on a tour of some of the European and Mediterranean countries later in her life that she was inspired, thereby affirming the artist in her and when she returned home, started exploring Indian Ink Pen Work. In her very first exhibition in Zoo Lake, Johannesburg, she achieved a sell-out of all her art works, a motivation to climb to greater heights and explore different mediums. Her love for the outdoors with her husband, a wildlife photographer, and extensive travels across Africa enhanced and enriched her artwork. “I love to depict nature and people and living in and working from Hoedspruit, I paint a lot of wildlife in oils on specially made canvas consisting of 100% cotton duck,” she said. “I am expanding on the subject to include different cultures and nature surrounding them”. She paints daily from 08:00 to 17:00, except on Sundays. “I am very disciplined when it comes to painting,” she added. She also explained that having a dedicated workspace has enabled her to work on several pieces at the same time and as the paint dries on different paintings, she is able to work on others. Lomas is currently working on a painting of a lion with two lionesses and a separate painting of an elephant bull, pieces she believes will ‘wow’ her audience. Some of her paintings are commissions that must be completed for clients and others are for different exhibition spaces around the country.
“I am motivated to improve on the images in my head and I aspire to keep myself busy. I am constantly challenging myself to try new methods and subject matters. Each artwork is unique and very much depends on the style of the painting.” According to her, artists today live in such exciting times where there are so many mediums, meanings, and interpretations. “There are almost no limits, which makes it a very liberating experience to be an artist in today’s world. I draw some inspiration from modern artists such as Emily Lamb and Marcel van Luit. I look towards artists that are not afraid to challenge themselves and that often give us a glimpse into a world that only exist on the canvas that they are working on and portray a view that is not seated in the reality of this world.” Her most challenging artwork she has had to work on was a commission from an African family who had given her different individual photographs she had to marry into one canvas. She detailed that she was privileged enough to be given the opportunity to present a solo exhibition in Holland back in 2020 but due to the Covid-19 lock down was not able to attend but her artwork was airfreighted to Jaco van Groeneveld of van Bellen Art for display in the The Lobby, Oud Beijerland, Artconcilio.” Lomas’ art work is available through her website www.vanessalomasartist.co.za, and several social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest.

Phalaborwa FC through to play-offs ■ Billy Sibuyi
Phalaborwa FC have now turned their attention to the mayoral cup which have been resuscitated by the mayor after they had been halted due to the pandemic. The 2022 Mayor’s Cup Games will consist of netball, women and men football, under/15 football, and football for seniors. All teams within the jurisdiction of Ba-Phalaborwa are invited to participate in these games which are to be started from respective ward levels. “We are ready for the play-offs in the first week of June and hope to make Phalaborwa proud in our exploits,” concluded Manyama. According to the municipality, the registration forms may be collected from all the Ward Councillors, and the speaker’s office. Clubs are advised to hand deliver the completed forms to Sport Arts and Culture office at the Namakgale Memorial Priscint, next to the Namakgale Stadium. “As we are adjusting to live with the Corona Virus, we need to cautiously move into the new normal life. We ought to bring together our communities through sport in our quest to strengthen the fight against the social ills through sport. Our communities must be united and promote social cohesion with these games. We urge everyone to take this advantage and participate in these games,” said the Mayor, Merriam Malatji.
The Phalaborwa Football Club pulled off one of the most jaw-dropping league title wins in Ba-Phalaborwa soccer history when they won the soccer league on the last day of the season. From the minute the match started, all the permutations were strongly against Phalaborwa FC getting a win away from home against league runners-up, Predators FC, who had vowed to not lose on home soil. Among the extraordinary feats Predators needed to do, was win by an 18-goal margin, making it an impossible feat for them. On top of that, this meant if Phalaborwa were to score a single goal in the match, then Predators would have to score an additional goal on top of the 18 that they initially needed, and that became the tall order when Predators failed to capitalise on chances created. Phalaborwa FC securely clinched the title with six points ahead of their rivals last weekend in a match that was supposed to be played two weeks ago when they thumped Predators by two goals to nil. They now await the other regional leagues from Giyani, Tzaneen, Maruleng, and Letaba to finish their last fixtures in order to move on to the provincial playoffs phase where the winner would be promoted to the ABC Motsepe League. Much of the league season was a twohorse race contested by the two Phalaborwa teams, with the two finishing 7 points ahead of third-placed Majeje United. Predators FC manager, Edwin Ratlapane, said the final fixture was a very emotional one and he is looking forward to next season where he will stand a chance to win the league. Kala Manyama, the manager of Phalaborwa FC, told Bulletin that his team was determined from the onset. “We are happy with all our victories, and we are looking forward to see how far we will go during the playoffs,” he said. “For us to succeed we had to put a team together of very dedicated personnel who made sure our players were on top Back: Lephallo Mofokeng, Mandy Mangena, Sithembiso Mashego, Lebogang Nkwane, Lawrence Rammalo, Ndzalama Mkansi and Molebaleng Malatji. of their game, and all the work put in Middle left to right: Thabang Malatji, Tonic Malepe, Sibusiso Masilela, Tebatso Ngobe, Dikgang Malatji, Puseletso Talane, and Vusimusi Nobunga. has finally paid off.” Front: Silence Maseala, Lucas Magaoga, Ruan Maenetja, Solly Lepulana, Tumelo Magaoga, Ndzuniso Nyathi and Phomolo Malepe.

Villiers, by 073 818 4431 skakel.

Ben sorg vir titaniese stryd 2
■ Joe Dreyer
