The eighth generation of Volkswagen’s iconic hot hatch, the Golf GTI, will retail in South Africa from the 1st of September. Regarded as the most digitally advanced GTI, has been given 11kW more power than its predecessor. The 2.0-litre turbocharged engine now develops 180kW with a torque peak of 370Nm. The four-cylinder engine is coupled with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. It takes a mere 6.4 seconds to complete the 0-100km/h sprint. The Volkswagen Golf GTI comes standard with a three year or 120 000km warranty, a five year or 90 000km EasyDrive Service Plan and a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty. The service interval is at every 15 000km. South Africa is one of the biggest Golf GTI markets outside of Europe with 34% of the total seventh generation of Golf sales were that of the GTI derivative. The Golf model range was also the best-selling in the A Hatch segment in South Africa last year with a 29.1% segment share. The Golf GTI’s ignition lock has been replaced by an engine start/stop button that is offered as standard equipment, which is notable in that once the doors are opened, the dashboard pulses red until the engine is started. The design of the new Golf GTI also matches its enhanced driving dynamics. At the front, the wide air intakes, low-positioned standard LED head-
lights and unmistakable signature light on the radiator grille are particularly distinctive. The latter is illuminated for the first time by a narrow LED strip, which flows on the left and right into the headlight modules. This is the first generation of the Golf GTI to have a completely digitalised interior landscape of displays and controls. The digital displays of the standard InnoVision cockpit and infotainment system start up as soon as the doors are opened. The previous three-spoke sports steering wheel has been transformed into a new multifunction leather sports steering wheel with touch controls. The eight generation GTI will be the second model in the Volkswagen range to be made available with the optional Harmon Kardon sound system with a 12-channel amplifier with an output of 480W as well as eight speakers, one centre speaker and a subwoofer.

Parts, accessories, lifestyle, MIDAS has it all If you’re looking for a motor spares and accessories retailer and you’ve been driving since the mid-1980’s then chances are you’ve been a MIDAS-regular. It’s that very recognizable black and orange store, you know, the one with the flags. Established in 1983, the MIDAS group now boasts 107 stores in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Tzaneen MIDAS is one of those outlets. Not too long ago, a motorist needing a spare part for his vehicle had to mentally prepare himself for the journey into the dodgy side alleys of the sketchy part of town looking for some guy who knew some other guy who could get the parts you need at a special price. And then 37 years ago that changed when the first MIDAS hoisted its flags. Three decades later, MIDAS has become part of the “South African thing” alongside skottelbraai, overalls, and “lekker”. Because MIDAS is no longer a brand, it has become a verb. In the dusty little tropical paradise of Tzaneen, that’s no different. Everyone knows oom Hennie Smit with his leather hat, his bonsais and that legendary red pickup truck. When you enter his store, you are welcomed by default, not by obligation. The Tzaneen MIDAS retail store emphasizes on the needs of any vehicle owner, with a focus on an abundance of product ranges, from motor parts and accessories through to lifestyle equipment.
Basically the store gives you that feeling, you know. Like when you first slipped in behind the wheel of that secondhand Tazz when you finished school and the first thing you did was head to MIDAS for a spiffy set of seat covers and maybe one of those sporty steering wheel covers. In short, if you’re a petrol head, you need to become familiar with the orange and black chevrons opposite Tzaneen Crossings. Besides the spares and the parts and the pricing, they also offer you some practical advice. For instance, if your car has been standing for an extended period, make sure your car is free of debris, rubbish and uninvited “visitors”. Your car may have become an inviting and warm shelter for insects and other pests while it was safely parked in your garage. Make sure to check the undercarriage, wheels and under the bonnet for any small animals before heading off. Remove any nests, webs, or other debris. With no air having circulated through your vehicle for some time, your car may also have developed an unpleasant smell. Remove old sweet wrappers, fast-food packaging, or an old packet of crisps, then use a vehicle air freshener to give your vehicle a fresh and welcoming smell. Make sure you have the engine and cabin filters inspected and changed regularly to ensure vehicle longevity and interior comfort. When you replace the cabin filter, the owner or driver will im-
mediately notice a difference in driving efficiency of the defrosting, heating and cooling system. A new cabin filter will also keep the interior clean and remove any odour from the vehicle. Spot the signs of a flat or failing battery. Dim headlights - The headlights are dim when the car idles, but then brightens up when the engine is revved up. Struggling starter motor - The engine will struggle to start when you turn the key to switch on the engine. Checking the oil level after a car has been stationery for a while is something car owners should all do to make sure it’s safe to drive, prevent unexpected break-
downs as well as to improve the car’s performance. Check the vehicle’s engine coolant, brake fluid, and power steering fluid. Make sure these fluids are filled to the minimum level, so it is safe to travel and then changing them or top them up at a later stage. Remember to check your tyre pressure and look for cracks that could have formed. Above all else, MIDAS, cares about your safety, inside and outside the vehicle. So remember, if you are unsure of anything automobile related, head over to the guys at MIDAS Tzaneen and they’ll help you steer clear of the proverbial potholes.

Technology designed to deter crime In the past there were only two means of identifying a stolen vehicle if its number plates were removed or changed, by the stamped vehicle identification number (VIN) and the engine number. Criminals found it easy to modify or clone those numbers, which led to stolen vehicles finding their way back into the used car market. Now imagine needing to modify 10 000 microscopic identifiers located throughout a vehicle to produce a similar level of criminal deception, it is a near-impossible task. This deterrent arose as a result of SANS 534-1 legislation that was passed in 2012. It made fitment of microdots compulsory to new vehicles and trailers. In fact, all vehicles that are submitted for police clearance need to be equipped with microdots as well. What is a microdot? A microdot is a tiny polymer disc measuring one millimetre in diameter. The microdot has either the 17-digit VIN or PIN laser-etched in it no less than nine times, which includes hidden security layers. The microdot information is accessible to law enforcement officers, insurers and motor industry employees by utilising an inexpensive UV light and a low-power
microscope. DataDot has trained 16 000 SAPS members in the identification of microdots and supplied 12 000 kits for the purpose. Microdots are applied using a spray-on system. The dots and adhesive are sealed in a container that is attached to a compressed air supply and sprayed onto panels, the engine compartment and undercarriage, more than 67 locations. Before application takes place, the microdots are linked to the vehicle details and the details of the fitment are uploaded to the Department of Transport’s eNatis system. The fitment process takes about 20 minutes and the one-off cost is around R500. When is microdots needed? As of the 1st of September 2012, new vehicles and vehicles in need of a police clearance are legally required to bear microdots. A police clearance is needed when a new engine is fitted, the vehicle colour is changed or when a stolen vehicle is recovered, to name a few examples. Any owner is free to get their vehicle microdotted for security purposes, if they so desire. Is microdots successful? Statistics show that when a vehicle is fitted with microdot technology, identified
by a sticker on the vehicle, the risk of theft or hijacking decreases by more than 50%. The technology also prevents the sale of stolen vehicle parts and, according to DataDot, more than 14 000 vehicles have been recovered and identified since 2003 using the technology. The uptake of the technology has also led to the apprehension of hit-and-run suspects and it’s gaining momentum in the cycling fraternity to mark expensive bicycles. The company expects the use of the technology to expand to include other valuable personal items.

Taking Care Of Your Tyres Tyre Pressure: • Only check tyre pressure when your tyres are cold. • Never deflate a hot tyre. • Under- or over-inflated tyres can lead to premature wear and irreversible carcass damage. • You should check your tyre pressure every two weeks. Under normal driving conditions, a tyre may lose as much as 0,3 bar of pressure in one month. • Always use a metal valve cap, as it will retain the air from a leaking valve core. Tyre pressures vary from vehicle to vehicle. Consult your nearest Hi-Q outlet or vehicle specification booklet for correct pressure recommendations. In the morning, first travel at a moderate speed for a few kilometres. This will allow your tyres to gradually rise to its optimal operating temperature and the full performance will come through. In the event of a puncture, call on your nearest Hi-Q outlet. One of our professionals will conduct a thorough safety inspection to determine whether the tyre can be repaired or not. Tyre tread wear depends on your driving style, the load, inflation pressures, wheel alignment and balancing, road surfaces and more. Outside temperature
plays a significant role in tyre life span. At 15°C a tyre would see 100% of its life, but at 35°C it might only live 50% as long. Interesting fact, during its lifetime, the average tyre may rotate up to 26 million times. The sidewall of your tyre is vulnerable to bumps, knocks and bruises from curbs and potholes. Watchful parking and avoiding potholes will reduce sidewall damage. Over time normal driving conditions may drag down a vehicle’s steering and suspension, which could have an adverse effect on wheel alignment. Have your vehicle’s wheel alignment checked at least once a year, dependant upon the mileage you travel and the road surface conditions. It is our recommendation that you check balancing every nine or ten thousand kilometres, depending on the road conditions, which you travel. Normal road travel can cause both wheel alignment and wheel balancing to go out of specification.

Choose your options wisely Unlike in many countries, vehicle insurance in South Africa is not compulsory. However, there are a high number of road accidents and vehicle thefts in South Africa each year. Thus, it makes sense to take out a good car insurance policy to protect yourself against unnecessary expenses. Because car insurance in South Africa isn’t mandatory, many drivers don’t have it. In fact, around 70% of cars in South Africa are not insured according to research. There are many South African insurance companies that provide car insurance coverage. Policies insure the vehicle rather than the driver. However, you will need to name the listed or designated driver of the car and you can add other drivers, but this may affect premium costs. The Prudential Authority, which is an arm of the South African Reserve Bank, regulates the car insurance sector in South Africa and many companies belong to the South African Insurance Association (SAIA). If you plan on driving in South Africa, there are three main kinds of car insurance that drivers can choose from. The first is Comprehensive car insurance. This
is the most extensive - and the most expensive - coverage. If you have financing for your car, the bank will insist on comprehensive coverage. As the name implies, this insurance covers pretty much everything including damage, theft, and costs to your own car and third parties in the event of an accident where you are at fault. Policies vary between different insurers, so you’ll need to check whether things such as breakdown assistance or coverage abroad are included or not. The second is Limited car insurance. This is somewhat cheaper than comprehensive coverage and covers you for theft, fire, and hijacking. It also covers you against third-party claims. However, you don’t have coverage for your own vehicle’s damage in the event of a collision. The cheapest of the lot, Third-party insurance, will only cover damage done to
other people’s property. This is often not a very wise choice unless you own a very old vehicle. Third-party insurance won’t cover you if you drive your car outside of South Africa. If you want additional coverage but don’t want to take out a full comprehensive policy, some companies offer the option of taking out extra insurance for specific things such as roadside assistance. Besides the type of car insurance you take out in South Africa, your premium costs will be based on a number of different factors. These include current value of your vehicle – you can choose from four different value options in South
Africa; your driver profile – age, health, and driving history; where you live; how much you drive, with some insurers offering discounts or pay-as-you-go options for drivers who do not travel much; what you use your car for; how many drivers are listed on the policy. In addition to this, your excess or deductible will affect the cost. This is the amount that you have to pay towards any claim you make. All insurers have a compulsory excess, but you can increase this in order to make your monthly premiums lower. Some insurers also offer a discount if you agree to install a tracking system on your vehicle.

Land Cruiser 300 ready to conquer Africa
Each Land Cruiser 300 will feature a tailored specification line-up, in accordance with usage and customer requirements. The local introduction is set for August 2021.
Goodyear up to the task When you create a road-going hypercar that pushes the limits of what’s possible, you need a tyre that’s up to the task. That’s the challenge faced by Brabham Automotive as it introduces the Brabham BT62R, a road-going version of its blisteringly fast BT62. The BT62 is a million-dollar, 710PS machine that won the first endurance race it took part in, while running Goodyear tyres. To source road tyres that meet similar performance demands for the BT62R, there was only one place to go, Goodyear. Brabham Automotive’s confidence in Goodyear comes not only from that racewinning combination in November 2019 but also from a decades-old partnership in Formula 1. Sir Jack Brabham famously won the 1966 Formula 1 World Championship using Goodyear tyres driving a Brabham-Repco he constructed himself. Today, Sir Jack’s son, David Brabham, is the Sporting Director at Brabham Automotive who was behind the wheel of that victorious BT62 during its debut race in 2019. Drivers and owners of the BT62 and BT62R cars echo that passion, and the legacy lives on. Providing a tyre that could live up to the demands of a race-bred machine like the BT62R is no mean feat, especially when it needs to be legal to drive on the road, but Goodyear was ready. As the ultimate tyre in Goodyear’s Ultra Ultra High Performance (UUHP) range, the Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport RS ticked every box. Goodyear tested the tyre on motorways and open roads first, and then on the track, including extensive testing at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Because of this rigorous testing over almost two years, this tyre was just what Brabham Automotive required. Vehicles like the Brabham BT62R generate huge lateral G-force using a combination of mechanical and aerodynamic grip and require tyres like no other. Balancing this with on-road comfort is crucial, as Fehl explains: “The Eagle F1 SuperSport RS is the perfect choice for drivers using their hypercars on track, where 80% of the owner’s focus is ontrack performance.
How does the Eagle F1 SuperSport RS manage to satisfy these performance demands? The tyre uses a cutting-edge combination of race-proven tyre compounds, with different compounds on the outside compared to the inside. The ability to blend the demands of the racetrack with the requirements of road-legal vehicles is an incredibly difficult thing to master. For the road, it needs to satisfy tough demands for wet grip, noise, rolling resistance and other requirements. The use of race-bred compounds is coupled with a highly-intelligent tread pattern with Bridge Assist Technology, adding bridges into the first groove for block stability and bending resistance. The tread pattern also has fewer grooves than other tyres in the UUHP range and lower pattern depths to prevent the tread blocks from moving around under extreme load, allowing the use of a softer, stickier compound. This means drivers can be more accurate and helps prevent the tyre from generating too much heat. High-speed stability is enhanced, too, with Powerline Cover technology, a tread deformation protector for high speeds. The Eagle F1 SuperSport RS is the highest-performing road-legal tyre Goodyear has created, and that is precisely what owners of extreme vehicles like the Brabham BT62R demand. It is perfect for a wide range of vehicles that need to perform at very high speeds on the track, up to the highest level of performance, so it’s the ultimate tyre for track-focused supercars and hypercars from the likes of Brabham. These manufacturers are no strangers to racing, and neither is Goodyear, so how much has the motorsport program influenced the design of the tyre? Hugely. When it comes to the tread design of the RS, the race and road teams work very closely together. When it comes to the compounds, it’s the same team for both. For drivers looking for ultimate performance from a road-legal tyre, the Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport RS is the perfect choice.

Check your tyres and Winter is bad for your batteries windscreen Tyres are arguably one of the most crucial safety features on vehicles, and they must always be in good condition. Worn tyres are extremely dangerous in all conditions, but this danger can be multiplied in wet, snowy, and icy conditions. It’s critical that vehicle owners check their owner’s manual to determine the correct pressure to inflate to and within the manufacturer’s guidelines. This will ensure optimal road holding and extend the tyre’s life. “Vehicle owners are reminded that the law requires tyres to be in good condition and they may face stiff penalties if they are found to be sub-standard. The law requires tyres to have a tread of at least one millimetre; some tyres already have tread wear indicators which make determining this easier,” the AA said. “A tyre which is worn should never be re-
paired, it must always be replaced for your, and other road users’ safety.” The AA also advised vehicle owners that insurance policies require vehicles to be in roadworthy condition, and that worn tyres may void that condition which may lead to a repudiation of claims in the event of a crash. If your car is parked outside overnight, you may have a layer of frost on the windscreen. Do not use warm water to clean this layer, your windscreen may crack. Instead, use a scraper (an old credit card will do) to remove the ice. Using the air-conditioner to demist the interior of the car will also help. Make sure it is clear before you drive. Avoid using the windscreen sprayers when driving in cold conditions as the water from the reservoir will freeze onto the windscreen, and the wipers will not be able to clear the ice. “Check the condition of your wiper blades and replace them if needed and avoid cleaning mud and soil from the windscreen with the wipers as these can scratch the glass. If possible, park your car undercover at night to ensure your windscreen remains clear the next morning”.
Temperatures across South Africa are gradually falling, and the full onset of winter is imminent. The Automobile Association (AA) says it’s important for motorists to be aware of the change in climate, and to prepare adequately for the cold months ahead. Vehicle batteries are always trickier during this time, as the starter draws increased amps to crank a cold engine. Remember that in cold weather a fully charged battery provides less than half of the power than in warm weather. In addition, the following tips are suggested: Check the water (electrolyte) level. Water must cover the fluid plates and, if necessary, top it up. Use only distilled water (water that is boiled and allowed to cool). Avoid overfilling and clean any spillage. Keep the battery clean. Clean the terminals with warm (not hot) soapy water and remove any acid or dirt build-up, which can cause the battery to self-discharge quicker. Make sure the battery is secured properly and not moving around un-
der the bonnet. Charge the battery regularly. If you normally drive only short distances, or use your car infrequently, you may need to take a longer (one hour) drive each week to ensure the battery stays charged. Switch off before you switch on. Switch all other devices in your vehicle off before your switch the car on. These include the air-conditioner, radio, lights, seat warmers, windscreen wipers, and demisters. Alternator belts. Check the belts for fraying or cracking. A loose alternator belt is a common cause of battery failure. Service your car. Poor engine condition can overload the battery, so ensuring your car is maintained according to the manufacturer’s specifications will extend the battery’s life.

You should consider Taxi Insurance Before we get to the issue of taxi insurance, let’s take a minute to remember just how important taxis are in South Africa. Since the industry was deregulated in the late 1980s, taxis have been a huge part of the South African economy. There are some 200,000 licensed minibus taxis on roads, and many, many more unlicensed vehicles. Taxis transport around 14 million people per day and are by far the most popular method of transport in most urban areas. Of course, those big numbers have a dark side as well. Given how many taxis are on roads, inevitably, there are accidents. Of the average 36 people that die in road accidents in South Africa each day, about four of those are in taxi related incidents. The Automobile Association of South Africa found that there are around 70,000 minibus taxi accidents each year, which is double the rate of accidents for passenger cars. Every vehicle on the road in South African must have insurance to be legally driven, and taxis are no different. A taxi also MUST have passenger liability insurance (to cover costs of passengers being injured in an accident). However, you don’t have to have specific taxi insurance, you can have regular vehicle insurance instead. But there is a good reason that you might want to opt
for taxi insurance over any other kind of vehicle insurance. Taxi insurance is specifically designed to meet the needs of taxi owners and drivers. That means that you can expect to get coverage for things that aren’t covered under more traditional vehicle insurance. In general, normal car insurance won’t cover passenger liability (which you’re required to have), so you’ll need to get an additional passenger liability policy on top of your regular car insurance. Additionally, many regular car insurance companies won’t cover you if you use your car for business, meaning you’ll need to get a specific business car insurance plan anyway (at which point, you’ll probably be better off going with a taxi insurance policy). Of course, specific policies vary between companies, but there are certain things that you can expect to see in a taxi insurance policy. Importantly, passenger liability insurance will be included; you should have the option to choose comprehensive, third party only, or third party fire and theft insurance; discounts for adding more vehicles to your policy (handy if you’re building a fleet of taxis);
If you haul, insure We refer to our truck drivers as our “Highway Heroes”. They keep our economy on the move and do so notwithstanding the numerous challenges on the roads. The past failures to adequately maintain and manage our rail system, leading to the road transport of hazardous goods, like fuel and chemicals, add to these challenges. Insurance is an important component in the supply chain management of goods transport and logistics. It is important to recognize that insurance is not merely a “one size fits all”. The fleet manager must start by managing and maintaining the fleet to optimize insurability. The next step is to find ways to reduce the risks and cost of fleet insurance. A delayed, reduced or rejected insurance claim could seriously impact on the survival of your trucking business. The challenges and the subsequent need for truck insurance in South Africa should be clear to all those in the transport industry. But, an understanding of the different types of trucking insurance coverage is hard, even for the most experienced trucker. A few aspects to consider in South Africa are that we are not an island and many truckers and their trucks venture crossborder up into Africa. It is not only our dismal road safety record and reckless drivers we need to share the roads with that pose a threat, with the state of the economy and large numbers of unemployed people, crime is real, and many revert to criminality. Hijacking syndicates have become quite professional in the way they operate and are well informed of the locations for stopping and offloading. Trucks are regarded as rather rapidly depreciating assets – for example, a new truck will lose up to 20% of its original value in 12 months, which means
every step must be taken to help retain as much release value as possible with all fleet vehicles. And that is where truck insurance comes in. Truck insurance can be personalized to the individual needs of the truck and fleet owner. It could include a specially designed trucking policy enabling choice between limited thirdparty cover to comprehensive cover, to somewhere in between. Public liability cover, vehicles including trucks, trailers and special types of vehicles can all be covered and it usually includes towing and recovery perks. Trucking insurance, in some policies, also covers lost or damaged keys or remotes, roadside assistance and emergency repairs, loss of fuel, environmental impairment liability, windscreen cover, wreckage removal and fuel tank spillage clean-up. Truck Insurance typically covers light commercial vehicles including light delivery vehicles with a maximum gross vehicle mass (GVM) of up to 3500kg as well as medium and heavy commercial vehicles. When looking for truck insurance there are various perils which you can be covered for including accidental and intentional damage, theft- and hijack related incidents, damage to glass, acts of nature which include hail, wind, storm, floods, earthquake and lightning. At an additional premium, you can also specify all non-standard sound equipment and vehicle accessories to be covered comprehensively. For instance: cooling/refrigeration units, canopies, drop-sides, branding, gutter machines and so forth. To find out more about truck insurance and specific extras or add-ons to your insurance policies, have a chat to your broker and find out the best options based on your specific requirements.
personal accident coverage for both driver and passengers; Many taxi insurance policies also offer compensation to the driver if a taxi cannot be driven for a certain amount of time due to an accident (to cover lost earnings); and finally, many specific taxi insurance plans also cover loss of or damage done to luggage. Your policy will depend on the company that you choose, but these are the main features seen in most taxi insurance plans. With so many accidents involving taxis on South African roads, it’s obviously a good idea to have insurance to protect your investment and your livelihood, quite apart from the fact that you legally must have insurance to drive. Specific taxi insurance policies do tend to be a good bet if you’re a taxi owner/operator, quite simply because they provide coverage that’s better tailored to what you need. Insurance is a must, but taxi insurance is worth considering. Ask your broker about their products and offerings to see what’s available to you.

Theuns Joubert and Schalk van Heerden in a Toyota Yaris S2000 are the local favourites and all eyes will be set on them for an expected victory in the Tzaneen Rally.
The latest news from the organisers of the upcoming NTT Motor Group Tzaneen Rally, the 4th round of the WOMZA National Rally Championship, is that this event had to unfortunately be postponed for a further two weeks, which means this rally is now set to take place from the 3rd to the 4th of September. The starting time for the event is at 13:00. Local rally driver, Eddie Simpson, and former rally driver and currently an advance driving instructor, Theuns Viljoen, are both very familiar with the stages around Tzaneen. They were part of the route planning for this two-day event. According to Viljoen, will the NTT Motor Group Rally consist out of 12 stages. The first four stages will be determined on the first leg of the rally on Friday the 3rd of September. The first three stages will consist out of gravel roads with the last stage on tar which will take place in Tzaneen. The second day of the rally will consist out of six stages, with the sixth stage again to be a repeat of the first day’s tar stage. The planned distance of all 12 stages is set to be around 140km. “Many of the stages is from previous year’s rallies, and this year’s event will include routes around Tzaneen Dam and the canal stages which is quite popular amongst rally drivers”, said Viljoen.
Viljoen said they added two new stages for this year which will challenge the rally teams in the Agatha area. These two stages were held about 20 years ago, and they are set to set the men apart from the boys. Motorsport is an expensive sport to participate, and with no manufacturer teams officially involved in South African rally, the entry list these consists mainly out of private entries. In this regard, private teams still drive with some level of caution to avoid any damages which could skyrocket costs even further. Therefore the contesting rally teams will be grateful to hear that some of the land owners, in particular the Greater Tzaneen Municipality and Hans Merensky Forestry has agreed to scape the routes intended to be used as stages, which would help to lessen the roughness and punishment the cars have to endure. If the weather turns out to be bright and sunny skies for the weekend, these scraped stages can provide some spectacular speeds for the cars. If it rains, well, then it can be a slippery affair as the wet gravel will turn to mud as soons as the first few cars have passed though the stage. Tzaneen’s wet conditions have set

the scene in the past for a surprise victory by a private team, to beat the then Toyota Dealer Team with Serge Damseaux behind the wheel. It was during the 2001 SA Rally Championship, with Damseaux leading by quite a comfortable margin. Lady Luck smiled down on privateer Johnny Gemmel in his all-wheel drive Subaru in the 13th stage of the rally, when he drove past Damseaux and his co-driver, Vito Bonafede, who were struggling to change a punctured tyre with the jack keep sinking away in the mud under the weight of the car. Damseaux and Bonafede eventually fought back some time afterwards, but still had to settle for second place. The NTT Motor Group Rally has attracted a total of 32 teams. This is reportedly the biggest entry of any WOMZA National Rally so far this year.
Local rally driver and well-known resident Eddie Simpson will team up with Louis Menge in a Opel Corsa for the Tzaneen Rally in September.

The mighty Honda spreads its wings Since its introduction in 2012 (as the NC700X) the NC750X has enjoyed consistent popularity throughout Europe. Reasons for the success are several: a ground-breaking, torque-laden, fuelsipping twin-cylinder engine, a relaxed, roomy riding position with wide handlebars and comfortable seat, compliant suspension and distinctive adventure styling all play their part. The storage compartment (where the fuel tank would normally be), capable of holding a full-face helmet and Honda’s unique Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) that over half of European customers chose in 2019 are further features that set the NC750X apart. Viewed as a whole, the NC750X’s qualities combine to create a motorcycle which functions superbly. And for all types of riding – commuting, touring and simply for pleasure – it has proved a motorcycle with compelling all-round appeal. Honda has taken care to continuously evolve the NC750X’s successful (and unique) formula, with several upgrades over the years. For 2014 it gained 75cc, going from 670 to 745cc; for 2016 a new more adventurous aesthetic, new instruments, DCT upgrades and LED lighting were added; for 2018 two-level Honda Selectable Torque Control and a 35kW version arrived. Now for 2021, Honda are building on its core strengths of practicality, do-itall comfort and handling composure,
improving all three. At the same time, there’s also more spirited engine performance, with an injection of extra torque and a boost of top-end zap, with a raised redline. The addition of electronic riding modes completes a polished package. The 2kW more peak power for the NC750X’s EURO5-spec engine, plus an extra 600rpm to the redline are the headline changes, thanks to work on valve timing and intake/exhaust efficiency. Shorter ratios for first, second and third gears smarten response while a slipper clutch reduces lever load and keeps the ride smooth on rapid downshifts. Throttle By Wire (TBW) brings with it adjustable engine character through 3 default rider modes - RAIN, STANDARD and SPORT plus a customisable USER mode. Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) now has a finer level of input over 3 levels, while the Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) option features Automatic shifting schedules that integrate with the riding modes, as well as USER control. Peak power is raised 3kW to 43.1kW at 6,750rpm, with maximum torque of 69Nm at 4,750rpm. Hand in hand with the performance hike are shorter gear ratios over first, second and third gears (for both manual and DCT) improving standing start and roll-on acceleration through each gear. From 30 km/h the NC750X will cover 20m in 1.7s and 50m in 3.2s; at 60km/h the engine is turning at just 2,500rpm. Fourth, fifth and sixth

gears are now slightly taller, for maximum fuel efficiency. Are you “tyred” of repairing punctures? There is literally nothing more infuriating than a flat tyre. It’s a nuisance, it wastes your time, and in South Africa, it could get you killed. But there is a solution, and that solution is called No More Punctures. Founded in 2006, after realizing the need in South Africa for a superior tyre sealant to handle South Africa’s unforgiving roads and environment, No More Punctures started identifying and testing various tyre sealants and they now stock and distribute only the highest quality tyre sealants on the market. No More Punctures is the leading tyre puncture prevention specialist in South Africa and have experience in all sizes of vehicles from bicycles to heavy mining equipment. A tyre sealant is a complete puncture preventative, tyre repair and maintenance solution. It is a low viscosity liquid substance, with the primary composition being either glycol or latex. Specially formulated with advanced Kevlar fibres, rubber particles and cooling agents, the solution permanently seals punctures and protects the tyre. By preventing natural air loss, which leads to additional heat and tread wear (the number one reason for blowouts and tyre failure), coupled with the additional cooling properties, tyre sealants provide improved fuel consumption and extended tyre life. So how do tyre sealants work? The fluid is simply installed through the valve of the tyre. The solution creates an even coating that cools and maintains the tyre from the inside. When a puncture occurs, the inside tyre pressure immediately forces the sealant into the hole or laceration. The fibres and rubber in the sealant form a solid plug in
the tyre cavity. The puncture is permanently sealed, and the tyre sealer remains in it’s original consistency to continue sealing, extending and repairing hundreds of punctures in the tyre. Designed as a preventative measure for new punctures, the sealant also repairs existing punctures. A traditional repair further expands the puncture and tears the rubber bond of the tyre. A tyre sealant plug is a more natural repair, as the mica/rubber particles and fibres closely mimic that of the tyre’s rubber. Why does the sealant in the tyre remain viscous while the plug is solid and permanent? It’s quite fascinating really. The glycol is the carrier of the fibres that form the solid plug. Contracting and expanding of the cavity due to the tyre’s normal behaviour, squeezes the glycol from the plug. This allows the fibres, mica and thickeners to bond and form a solid plug. The remaining solution in the tyre continues to coat and protect the tyre from hundreds of punctures. The base substance of a tyre sealant is either glycol or latex. Glycol is a water-based substance that can be either ethylene or propylene, Propylene is non-toxic and Ethylene is toxic. Latex on the other hand is a nonwater-based substance commonly found in bicycle tyre sealants. Latex has a lower production cost and doesn’t require additives such as fibres to function as a sealant. It has proven to be very effective, but has a limited life span and dries in the tyre after about 15 000km. Once dried, it has shown to adhere to the tyre and rim. Removal and repairing of the tyre is often impossible. The high concentration of ammonia in latex sealants can corrode the steel rim and degrade the rubber of the tyre.
There are many benefits to using Propylene Glycol sealants due to its water soluble properties. It has an indefinite shelf life and can be reused. It is easily washed out with water, is non-toxic and non-flammable. It acts as a corrosion retardant and inhibits tyre degradation, thereby promoting higher rates of success for retarding and re-treading. Prevents standard air loss, bead leaks and reduces running temperatures. Coupled with its superior sealing capability, glycol tyre sealants prove to be an efficient tyre maintenance and cost-effective solution for commercial and private industries. The Nature of the fibres and the Glycol is what determines the quality, strength and longevity of the No More Punctures product. To be sure of exactly what you are putting into your tyre, look for Proylene Glycol and not Ethylene or Latex. Latex is temporary and Ethylene is TOXIC (imagine what it does to your tyres and wheels). Look for Aramid Fibres (Kevlar), Ceramic, Woolen, and other synthetic fibres, and more specifically look at the quantity of fibres (higher density means a better sealant). Look for additives such as crushed marble and mica particles that result in a superior sealant. There are a lot of sealants that use lower grade additives and fibres in the formulation to maximize profits and thereby reducing the performance and quality. No More Punctures offers something for almost every sector namely high-speed road, off-road, fleet and logistics, farming and forestry, mining and construction and even for military and armed forces.
