A2M architecture
to come
Our economic activities turn natural resources (space, matter and energy) into services for society (territorial organisation, materials, heat and mobility. They are being called into question today: What difference does it make to think of the world no longer as a world without limits but as one with finite dimensions? This is particularly the case of the construction sector, for which we know the major impacts in terms of resource needs and waste production.
marks. Our intention is not to turn them into an emblem of modernity or ecology, but to capitalise on them for a qualified response: the right quantity – the right material and energy flow – for the right form. Our goal is not any given materiality any more than energy, nor even architectural form, but to secure the conditions which the degrowth economist Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen called “the joy of life” in 1973.
The infrastructure and facilities that we build must be of better quality to reduce the material and energy flows that circulate between them. Sustainable construction defines the additional investments needed so as to be able to function better with less (energy, maintenance, etc.). The very conditions of investment must therefore be reconsidered: the aim today must be to consume ever less, better and differently – even if it means investing more, better and differently. The road map for energy efficiency is becoming increasingly clear: everything points to the need for energy criteria that are as efficient as those of the passive standard.
A world of finite dimensions “disillusions” the economic productive mechanisms ideally designed for growth. But it has the opposite effect on humans; as soon as they detach themselves from the call of sleepwalking consumption. A world of finite dimensions is “re-illusioned”: It gives back value to things, it gives meaning, utility and functionality, whereas the consumerist utopia produces waste, inefficiency and confusion. Whereas consumption turns the citizen into a universal sucker, the world of finite dimensions relocates him, and turns him into a competent, responsible stakeholder.
Sustainable construction is aimed at building not only more efficiently, from the structural or energy point of view, for instance, but also more resiliently, i.e. capable of maintaining an appropriate level of functioning in spite of uncertainties, be they a cold spell, a heat wave, or the breakdown of a technical body. Certain technological gems that are flaunted as being highly efficient are concurrently very vulnerable – and thus not very resilient – to the slightest power failure or malfunction of a simple electronic chip. Efficiency and resilience are consequently paradoxical constraints. The designer’s work must accordingly pertain to the crossing of these two rationales, on the territorial and construction scale. A2M has searched in all directions in the course of its project. Our choices are always made in an informed and critical manner for specific reasons to do with resistance, economy, and transport, particularly through the use of sustainable construction bench-
The question of the fair sharing of resources is the question of the 21st century. The architect is delegated by society to produce the most resilient and most efficient space infrastructure and facilities possible, by building a schematic framework which gives inhabitants the choice of being free and mutually assisting enabling them to live their lives – in short, to inhabit this world of finite dimensions. This is particularly the case in all A2M’s projects. The usual responses of the “sustainably correct” city – compactness, collective mobility, functional diversity and intensity, etc. – work. The city is more dense as a result; it also consumes more energy, space and matter. But that is also what gives it its quality. To preserve its identity and avoid ideological or opportunistic “densification,” it must be even more efficient. This is the principle investigated by A2M and its partners when they design their projects, which are based on a global approach and manage to remain economically very affordable.

book architecture+passive
We could speak of post-passive or high design building. Through the many projects developed in Belgium, the architectonic projects are re-examined, and the material regains primacy over technique. New design and construction methods are emerging, particularly with the computer-aided parametric design. Intended more particularly for architects, this presentation tends to show passive building no longer from the angle of its constraints but of its new potential.
At times there are no other solutions to preserve the aesthetic appearance of a building that we want to renovate. This presentation describes in detail the different aspects to be How can the issues taken into account in this of density and type of intervention. From sustainability be vapour migration to broached on the scale of a neighbourhood? We drying potential, interior illustrate the different points insulation is examined thoroughly through very of the BREEAM matrix concrete, more or less with concrete examples through the development radical examples, all the impacts of which (technical, of several projects and energetic, aesthetic, in particular that of the Guillemins eco-district. economic) are examined.
Mobile passive building: towards autonomy
Through years of teaching we've developed a very practical approach, leading the participant to apply the fundamentals in an every-day project's life.
Interior insulation: risks and potential
Among all actual matters, the latest subjects we shall be broaching, which we consider topical, are given below. You might find some of them of interest for your training/lecture cycles.
A BREEAM neighbourhood
A2M provide training courses and master class on passivehouse, sustainable development
What does passive building do to architecture?
training
A transportable and universal project, the zero box adapts to every environment. A home, office or shop all at once, this project, developed in direct connection with industrialists and developers, raises the questions of land use and self-sufficiency (energy, water, etc.).
2-hour training session on growing pains and other new pathologies of high energy performance buildings. This training is particularly appreciated by the experts and insurers. Hygrothermal principles applied to buildings (+Wufi software)": 2-hour session on the theoretical principles of vapour migration in walls, followed by concrete examples from practice – particularly interesting to delve in depth into topics such as renovation and interior insulation.
Energy efficiency of buildings: what’s it about?
Passive building in practice
Passive building and pathologies
2-hour session on financial impact control throughout the project, with a detailed description of economic aspects linked to passive buildings. Operating experience and feedback from several design and build projects in particular have enabled us to identify several decisive factors for containing the costs of the project without being led by the nose by external stakeholders. This training broaches planning, preparation, detail, material, and design elements.
8-hour training session that groups the two cases below and many cases from practice. What participants generally appreciate are concrete cases of projects for massive/ light, new/renovation, residential/commercial construction, air tightness, etc. The training is followed by implementation where the participants have to consider the details with real tools (condetti or models). The specificity of this training lies in applying theoretical principles in practice.
Reality Check
2-hour assessment, about labels, EPD, LCA, EPDB, software, criteria. How can you find your way through the jungle of different labels of materials? How can you take their lifecycle into account? What tools can be used to make objective choices and what pertinent criteria can be applied? This training broaches these questions and shows some cases of practical implementation on projects.
Cost management
Eco-audits of building materials
Passive building abroad? let's go worldwide Exporting Belgian expertise is not always a simple task! The project of the Belgian embassy in Kinshasa shows the adjustments, solutions and innovations needed in a tropical, sunny and radically different climate in terms of construction. The question arises whether passive building is still pertinent and possible to apply under such latitudes. Recent Belgian projects in New York also show the impact of more extreme climates on the design of energy-efficient buildings.
2-hour session of putting passive buildings to the test of the facts, success/ failure factors, etc. A2M has been erecting passive buildings since 2003, and this experience has enabled us to identify recurrent problems but also simple solutions and issues to be monitored in high environmental performance projects.
2-day training course (16 hours) particularly focused on the passive building, which goes over all of the following aspects: •
