istorically, the origin of Diwali can be traced back to ancient India, when it was

probably an important harvest festival. However, there are various legends pointing to the origin of Diwali or 'Deepawali.' Some believe it to be the celebration of the marriage of Lakshmi with Lord Vishnu. Whereas in Bengal the festival is dedicated to the worship of Mother Kali, the dark goddess of strength. Lord Ganesha, the elephantheaded God, the symbol of auspiciousness and wisdom, is also worshiped in most Hindu homes on this day. In Jainism, Deepawali has an added significance to the great event of Lord Mahavira attaining the eternal bliss of nirvana. Diwali also commemorates the return of Lord Rama along with Sita and Lakshman from his fourteen year long exile and vanquishing the demon-king Ravana. In joyous celebration of the return of their king, the people of Ayodhya, the Capital of Rama, illuminated the kingdom with earthen diyas (oil lamps) and burst crackers.

Models: Pari & Arjun Khurana

Each day of Diwali has its own tale, legend and myth to tell. The first day of the festival Naraka Chaturdasi marks the vanquishing of the demon Naraka by Lord Krishna and his wife Satyabhama. Amavasya, the second day of Deepawali, marks the worship of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth in her most benevolent mood, fulfilling the wishes of her devotees. Amavasya also tells the story of Lord Vishnu, who in his dwarf incarnation vanquished the tyrant Bali, and banished him to hell. Bali was allowed to return to earth once a year, to light millions of lamps to dispel the darkness and ignorance, and spread the radiance of love and wisdom. It is on the third day of Deepawali — Kartika Shudda Padyami that Bali steps out of hell and rules the earth according to the boon given by Lord Vishnu. The fourth day is referred to as Yama Dvitiya (also called Bhai Dooj) and on this day sisters invite their brothers to their homes.

All the simple rituals of Diwali have a significance and a story to tell. The illumination of homes with lights and the skies with firecrackers is an expression of obeisance to the heavens for the attainment of health, wealth, knowledge, peace and prosperity. According to one belief, the sound of fire-crackers are an indication of the joy of the people living on earth, making the gods aware of their plentiful state. Still another possible reason has a more scientific basis: the fumes produced by the crackers kill a lot of insects and mosquitoes, found in plenty after the rains. The tradition of gambling on Diwali also has a legend behind it. It is believed that on this day, Goddess Parvati played dice with her husband Lord Shiva, and she decreed that whosoever gambled on Diwali night would prosper throughout the ensuing year. Diwali is associated with wealth and prosperity in many ways, and the festival of 'Dhanteras' ('dhan' = wealth; 'teras' = 13th) is celebrated two days before the festival of lights. In each legend, myth and story of Deepawali lies the significance of the victory of good over evil; and it is with each Deepawali and the lights that illuminate our homes and hearts, that this simple truth finds new reason and hope. From darkness unto light — the light that empowers us to commit ourselves to good deeds, that which brings us closer to divinity. During Diwali, lights illuminate every corner of India and the scent of incense sticks hangs in the air, mingled with the sounds of fire-crackers, joy, togetherness and hope. Diwali is celebrated around the globe. Outside India, it is more than a Hindu festival, it's a celebration of South-Asian identities. If you are away from the sights and sounds of Diwali, light a diya, sit quietly, shut your eyes, withdraw the senses, concentrate on this supreme light and illuminate the soul.

Celebrating

Diwali

Models: Pia & Siddarth Sharma

Deepawali or Diwali is certainly the biggest and the brightest of all Hindu festivals. It's the festival of lights (deep = light and avali = a row i.e., a row of lights) that's marked by four days of celebration, which literally illumines the country with its brilliance, and dazzles all with its joy. Each of the four days in the festival of Diwali is separated by a different tradition, but what remains true and constant is the celebration of life, its enjoyment and goodness.

A major attraction this year is life-size Santa Claus that sings and dances atop a rotating base when plugged into an electric source. "Demand for such big decorations come from hotels and clubs," said Manish Singh, a retailer on Free School Street. Priced at a minimum of Rs 5000, Santa is a sure-shot crowd puller. Nahoum and Sons, at 111 years, is selling finger-licking fruit cakes at Rs 700 a pound. But for those who want to bake the cake on their own, the market is lined with shops selling the ingredient. While dry fruits cost anywhere between Rs 50 to Rs 100 a kilo, nuts are more expensive. A kilo of cashews cost within Rs 250 to Rs 400 while the

"But whatever you buy, make sure you bargain a good deal," she adds as a warning.

The groom who decorated his wedding with 99,999 roses to surprise his bride Groom Xiao Wang spent a year's salary on buying 99,999 red roses for his bride, Xiao Liu, for their wedding conducted in Chongqing, central China, where the number 999 is considered to be a good luck omen. The couple, both 24 years old, needed 30 cars to take the flowers to the service. They advertised on the internet for car owners and for helpers to stick the flowers on the vehicles. The flowers themselves were flown in from the other side of the country. 'I remembered that Liu loved these special roses and the idea just grew and grew. It was worth it all just to see the look on her face when she saw the cars,' said groom Wang. Liu who met Wang while they were at University together added, 'I mentioned a year ago I would like a romantic wedding; I can't believe he remembered, but it was amazing.' The groom also donated 20% of the cost of the roses to charity to get even more good luck.

The bride wore a white wetsuit and the groom wore a traditional black wetsuit as they climbed inside a 120,000 gallon shark tank to take their vows at Atlantis Marine World in Riverhead, N.Y. Both are experienced divers and were protected by a cage as sand sharks, nurse sharks, eels and a giant grouper circled around. They wore scuba gear and mikes that broadcasted their words to each other, as well as to friends and family. They said their “I dos over a radio transmitter with an officiant who did not get in the tank. B E AU T I F U L YO U Chilly temperatures and cold winds can make your skin dry and itchy in winters. Confused? How to apply Makeup on dry skin?? Well here’s a 7 step try-ityourself guide by makeover expert Remanika Narula to get a glowy and soft look for‌

According to Remanika, every face is a blank canvas and every brush stroke creates something magical. Makeup enhances natural beauty but also builds confidence for everyday life.. Here's what you can try out:

Use cover-up: In winters, first the foremost apply a moisturizer and primer then use your favorite cover-up to cover any blemishes and dark circles. If you have oily skin, also use loose powder to take away shiny spots.

Work with your eyebrows: Fill in your eyebrows with an eyebrow brush. Make sure the color is about three shades lighter than your natural hair color. If you want to save some cash, just use a pencil brush and eye-shadow. It can get a little more messy looking, so apply carefully, then apply a highlighter on your brow-bone. Apply eye-shadow: Use a frosty color eye shadow, like a pale white with sparkles, and apply to your eyelids at the base. Don't go past the rime of your eyelid. Take a brown/gold color, and apply over your white eye-shadow. With a gold sparkly eye shadow, brush that over top of your brown/gold and white shadow. So you get three layers that really make your eyes stand out, for any color of eyes. Take your white sparkly eye-shadow again and place with your finger or a small brush onto the top of your eyelid. So wherever the highest place of your eye stops is where you should apply it. Apple eye liner: Take a white eyeliner pencil and rime your lower lash line. Use a blend brush if needed to make your eyeliner more natural looking. Line your upper lash line with a gel black liner. The gel black liner makes the gold stand out more. Also wing the eyeliner at the ends of your eyes to make them appear lager and will also look more fun and cute. Winged eye liners are quite in fashion these days.

32

| OCT-DEC 2013

Now that you're done, you're ready for the winter day. On average, this look should take about seven minutes to do.

Apply Mascara: Before applying mascara curl up your lashes with 'lash curler' now it's time to use your black mascara to finish off your eyes!

Use Blush: Add a light pink or light cherry blush to bring your face to life.

Work on your lips: You can use red lip stick to finish off the look, or for a younger approach, use cherry lip gloss.

SOCIAL ANIMAL In an interview with Sumit Osmand Shaw for the song Aisa Aazaad

Hindustan Nahi Chahiye

which was launched this year and got great acclamation, he talks about how the song denotes the current scenario of our nation. After independence what all we have done to it, and not escaping to say that we all have been a part of this situation some way or another. The song talks about different aspects where we have failed, yet there is hope and the change will come.

S

umit, who lent his voice, says, "The

song is inspired by few Hindi poems written by two famous writers of different generations - Mr. Robin Shaw Pushp and Mr. Avdesh Preet. There verses have been used as the platform on which the songs stand high arranged lyrically by me. The renowned musician Ashvani Verma (of Euphoria fame) has done the music. It’s a rap number and the expressions are the key to give all of us a wake-up call.“ What was the release plan? To be very honest, it’s a song done by a group of people who believe in social change, hence there has been no budget for this yet the outcome is amazing. We did an online music video release, so that people can watch it on various online platforms and pass it around. Each click and each sharing denoted that we all love our country and will make a difference. Beside this the DVD’s and CD’s were with various TV and Radio channels. Since it was a non- commercial effort, it was their wish and will to share it with the mass.

“I am doing

my bit…..”

Do you feel this is the solution, for what we are facing? Well! To be honest all the efforts which were done were fruitful. So it hardly mattered what was the volume of the effort, all what mattered was that an effort was made. So in the same way, we creative people can do what we can do and other should do what they can. It’s a matter of doing our own bit, rest will follow. Any other interesting projects this year? Few of them as if for now …handling the creatives of an Indo–Polish documentary. During the World War II, the Jam sahib sheltered some 1,000 Polish children and few

few women. They lived in India for six years in total freedom and are now spread across the world. This documentary is about this emotional bonding which still exists. This film is shot at various locations of India and Poland. The other one is a main stream Hindi feature film.
