Lake Region Nestled in a suggestive sunny bay, the village of Ascona is considered the “pearl of Lake Maggiore” and one of the most refined resorts of Switzerland. Five 5-star hotels, one 18-hole golf course, numerous luxury boutiques and classy restaurants stand for exclusive holidays. The old village has a particular fascination: it is an intertwined network of alleys, piazzas and cobblestone streets. The Piazza along Lake Maggiore hosts a series of events, beginning with the world-famous New Orleans Jazz Festival in June – July. Ascona also offers a variety of museums and art galleries. A special mention goes to the Monte Verità Seminar and Convention Centre.

Ascona Recognised worldwide for its International Film Festival, the biggest cultural event in Switzerland and one of the most important ones in Europe. Locarno has a strong relationship with flowers; lovers of nature are drawn by the spectacular shows of camellias, mimosa and magnolias. The clear autumn days attract those who are looking for a quiet stay with excursions. The historic Piazza Grande, with typical arcades in northern Italian style, is one of the most famous squares in Switzerland, with its numerous boutiques and restaurants. This is the meeting place and heart of the town, and the main commercial activity takes place here.

Locarno 12

Ronco s/Ascona Brissago is a small village on the Italian border perched between the shores of Lake Maggiore and the steep mountains behind. Brissago is famous not only for its tobacco and cigar factory, but also for its islands, which seen from above look like bright green spots in the blue of the lake. The Isole di Brissago are easy to reach by boat, (have the mildest climate in Switzerland) and can be best admired from Ronco s/Ascona, a little village caressed by the sun, situated on the slopes of the mountain and characterized by the church of San Martino, which dominates the surrounding countryside.

Brissago & Ronco s/Ascona The Riviera del Gambarogno is a world of its own. On the left side of the Lake Maggiore – from Contone to the Swiss-Italian border – nature unveils a wealth of treasures: just look at the glistening Lake Maggiore, the charming hills and enjoy the sight of the most fascinating mountains. The entire Riviera and the incomparable Bolle di Magadino are known for their rich cultural heritage and culinary treats. Those who appreciate prestigious cultural events should not hesitate to make a reservation for the International Organ Music Festival in Magadino (every July).

Gambarogno 13

Valleys The Centovalli is named the “hundred valleys because of the countless side valleys leaving the main valley to the left and right. It is an important transit route to and from Italy. Its natural scenery, of outstanding beauty, offers nature and hiking friends a wide range of recreational activities. The many villages, which you pass by while travelling through the Centovalli, allow you to discover many characteristic corners, where traditions of the past are still lived. Verdasio, Rasa and Palagnedra are only a few of the small villages, enchanting in their simple and authentically beautiful way.

Centovalli The Valle Onsernone is one of the most impressive and mysterious valleys in Ticino. Characteristic are the thick forests, spectacular gorges and white water; this rather isolated place can be reached by a winding road. Along this road, which leads up to the village Spruga, there are some fantastic villages, built on sunny terraces in a traditional architectural style. Numerous internationally renowned writers and artists up until today find this valley the ideal place for inspiration, thanks to the extraordinary and up to this day intact natural and human surroundings.

Valle Onsernone 14

Rasa – Centovalli In the Maggia Valley, days are filled with sun and fun, and often one wishes to stop time in this unique river landscape with its countless waterfalls, high mountain tops, deserted mountain pastures, mountain lakes and picturesque villages and side valleys. With plenty of things to do and places to see, it is the perfect place to forget all your worries. You could spend the day immersed in nature, for example on one of the extremely well kept footpaths, which cover a total length of over 700 kilometres. We look forward to welcoming you to this magic valley.

Vallemaggia Tenero, a cosy village on the shores of Lake Maggiore, has a special charm: the calm mirror of the lake crowned by the mountains, the white sand beaches, a campsite paradise and the surrounding countryside transport the visitor into a carefree and relaxing atmosphere. The Verzasca Valley is among the valleys in Ticino, which offer the most authentic aspects of the alpine region south of the Saint Gotthard. Memories of the past are easily recognizable in the equilibrium, harmony and simplicity of the houses in the numerous rustic hamlets.

Valle Verzasca 15

Parks & Gardens The Isole di Brissago, the official botanical garden of Ticino, give the visitor the opportunity to escape from the noise and frantic rhythm of modern life. It’s a real oasis of peace in the middle of Lake Maggiore. The exotic plants, the colors and perfumes contribute to the visitor’s well-being. Thanks to its particularly mild climate, the botanical garden offers more than 1500 species of subtropical flowers, plants and trees from the Mediterranean region, subtropical Asia, South Africa, America and Australia.

Isole di Brissago

www.isolebrissago.ch The Camellia Park of Locarno is a small jewelsurrounded by populars, oaks and precious forest trees. The Park is a homage to the camellia, symbol of the premature and spectacular spring of Locarno. You can observe 9 00 different varieties of camellias, of which over 770 are classified. The best time for a visit is between March and April, when many camellias bloom. Several plants also bloom from late autumn and in winter: these are the less known, such as the Sasanqua variety, which deserve to be discovered and appreciated.

Camellia Park 16

Isole di Brissago This magnificent botanic garden is situated at the Gambarogno-side of Lake Maggiore, on a plain in the hills between Piazzogna and Vairano. In this place, Otto Eisenhut, a patient and talented plant breeder of plants and trees has cultivated thousands of beautyful colored flowering plants, like 9 50 types of camellias, 350 different magnolias, azaleas, peonies and Rhododendron on a surface of more than 17000 sq. m. Additionally Ivy, pine trees, juniper and other rare European and exotic coniferous trees grow in the park. Visitors need one hour for the visit of this park, connoisseurs probably somewhat longer.

Gambarogno Botanical Park

www.parcobotanico.ch Situated in a wooded park created at the end of the 19th century, the green tea plantation of Monte Verità in Ascona is made up of about a thousand Camellia sinensis. Its leaf is used as raw material first for green tea and then for black tea. The park is completed by a Zen garden, a tea path and by the “Loreley” teahouse, inaugurated in 2006, with its annexed exhibition laboratory. At the teahouse one can follow the tea ceremony, which also includes a specific introduction to the culture of tea, a tour of the Zen garden, of the plantation, and a visit to the laboratory.

Isole Borromee

The Isola Bella lies in front of the lakeshore town Stresa and is the best known of the three Borromeo islands. Count Carlo III Borromeo had a palace there and a magnificent garden built for his wife Isabella. After the visit of the Palazzo, a pleasant walk leads to the gardens, which are a classic example of an “Italian Garden” of the 1600’s. Isola Madre is the largest island of the three and is known for its botanical garden full of rare plants and exotic flowers. Peacocks, parrots and all kinds of pheasant live freely in the garden and thus create the impression of a tropical paradise. On the Isola dei Pescatori (the “Fishermen Island”) you will have the chance to admire the picturesque village inhabited by a small community still devoted to fishing. www.isoleborromee.it This special roundtrip starts in Locarno then takes you by boat down the lake to the magical atmosphere of the Isole Borromeo and the beautiful lakeshore town of Stresa. From Domodossola one returns to Locarno on the romantic Centovallina train, which passes through the delightful scenery of the Centovalli valley. The tour can also be done in the opposite direction.

Mountain Transportation In Orselina near the Madonna del Sasso church is the station of the cableway to Cardada. The natural terrace in Cardada offers a breathtaking view over the Lake Maggiore. A two-seater chairlift runs up to Cimetta. From the platform ground, the 360° panoramic view goes from the Maggia river delta between Locarno and Ascona (the lowest point of Switzerland), to the Monte Rosa alpine massif (the highest point of Switzerland). The restaurants and huts welcome guests with regional dishes. Sport: running and walking trails, orienteering, mountain bike trail, paragliding.

Cardada

Excursion to Rasa and Monte Comino

www.cardada.ch From the valley bottom, in the graceful village of Verdasio in the Centovalli, two small cableways depart from both valley sides: one to Rasa and the second one to Monte Comino. Rasa is a wonderful village situated on a magnificent natural terrace and surrounded by vast pastures and thick woods: a real jewel! Mount Comino instead is placed on the other side of the valley and is made up of a cluster of “rustici” (traditional local stone huts), scattered over the mountain. Close by are both the gracious church of “Madonna della Segna” and the nearby bog, a biotope of national importance. Both villages can only be accessed by cableway or on foot and offer sleeping and eating arrangements from spring to fall. www.ascona-locarno.com/excursions Bosco Gurin the only “German speaking” village of Ticino is one of Switzerland’s most charming villages. Situated on 1503 meters above sealevel, it is the highest mountain village in Ticino. Surrounded by magnificent peaks, like the Wandfluhhorn (Pizzo Biela) – the highest summit of the Bosco Gurin valley, the view is open towards the Maggia Valley. This panoramic scenic beauty can be best admired from the alps and peaks above the village, that one can reach by hiking, biking, or also with the chairlift, that leads skiers into the lovely skiarea, but also runs in summer. Down in the village, or up on the terrace of the cozy Grossalp hut – Bosco Gurin is a peaceful place in harmony with the nature around.

Cardada – Cimetta The Onsernone Valley is one of the most evocative and mysterious valleys of Ticino. Dense forests, spectacular gorges and a wild river characterize it. The valley is accessible through a winding road, which passes by neat little villages with buildings of great architectonic interest. From the village of Vergeletto one can easily and comfortably take a cableway to the Alp of Salei, which offers a natural scenery of immense beauty and a beautiful alpine lake. On the Alp of Salei is a mountain hut where one can stay overnight and enjoy excellent traditional Ticinese food.

Excursion to Salei

www.ascona-locarno.com/excursions Excursion to Cavagnoli Lake. Whisked up by the cableway in less than a quarter of an hour to the foot of the Basodino glacier, one strolls along a pleasant path towards the Lielpe valley. The rugged beauty of the surrounding Alpine valley is enhanced by exceptional fauna and flora. Having crossed through the summer pastures and walked beside the crystal-clear waters of Lake Bianco, one climbs the last stretch of the path leading to the Cavagnoli dam. After admiring the majestic peaks all around, one can enjoy a well-deserved refreshment at the Albergo Robiei restaurant on the return.

Robiei

www.robiei.ch The Funicular is an ideal starting point to reach the hill above Locarno. The Sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso, on a hillside overlooking the town of Locarno, can be reached in about five minutes by funicular, which leaves from the Ramogna near the railway station.

Gastronomy & Wine There are many different opportunities to relish delicious local specialties or appetizing gastronomic dishes: grottos, typical rustic restaurants that offer a simple but authentic cuisine; more modern and trendy restaurants with a refined atmosphere. Among the specialties of the Ticinese cuisine one finds polenta with braised meat, minestrone, mushroom risotto, game meat, local cold meats, excellent mountain cheese and traditional bread cake – all delicacies which are still cooked following traditional recipes. Tickle your palate!

Gastronomy

Local Products

www.ascona-locarno.com/gastronomy Ticino is rich with local produce. Extraordinary and characteristic cow and goat cheeses come from the valleys and mountains. The typical “formaggini” are eaten fresh and served with a dash of fresh-grounded pepper and olive oil: they are an all-time favorite. The list of excellent cold meats is long: mortadella, luganighe, coppa, lard and bacon are only a few among them. In fall the chestnut trees, which fill the woods, offer their fruit, which is used for the production of flour, bread, sweets and even ice-cream. Local vines produce fine grapes – among them one should mention the famous Merlot – which, through the hands of experts, are transformed into excellent wines and grappa.

Ticino Highlights Once seen from the south as the “key to the Alps” and from the north as the “key to Italy”, Bellinzona still today reveals to the traveller a rich historical and geographical heritage dating from the Middle Ages, which lives on behind the austere charm of this Lombard town lying in the Alpine approaches. Its importance as crossroads on the ancient Gotthard highway between the Latin civilization and the Germanic world is plain to the eye. The alleys, squares, courtyards and old houses relate this to the passer-by, but above all it is the three majestic castles with their rugged splendour and incomparable strength that tell of centuries of history written by Romans, Lombards, Swiss and Milanese.

Bellinzona

www.bellinzonese-altoticino.ch

With its typically Mediterranean atmosphere surrounded by mountains and a splendid lake, Lugano combines all the characteristics of an elegant metropolis while maintaining the features of a small town. Besides being Switzerland’s third financial centre and an important conference, banking and business centre, it is also a city of parks and floral gardens, villas and historic buildings. The wide range of accommodation and numerous activities on offer make Lugano a paradise for every age group and target. Much of its success with tourists comes from the temperate climate, assisted by the presence of the lake, the mild seasons and a high percentage of sunny days.

Lugano

www.lugano-tourism.ch

Whoever will get the chance to discover this generous region more in depth, will find a corner of paradise among enchanting landscapes, sweet and green hills colored with a constantly changing nature and which – through oaks, firs and birches – offers peaceful oases in which one can let oneself be cuddled in the most complete tranquility. The Mendrisiotto region is rich of contrasts and offers a pleasant stay in any season: in spring when nature’s strength explodes in the woods and gardens; in summer when one can seek some shade under the grotto’s pergolas or at the lakeside; in fall when the landscape is colored in the most warm tones and in winter when it’s mostly mild and no snow is on the ground.

Ostello Palagiovani

Just past the Youth Hostel begins the old city centre of Locarno. Its centre is the Piazza Grande where in summer there are festivals and events almost every week. The most famous festival is the film festival in august. But there is even more in Locarno: the arcades along the Piazza Grande that invite you for shopping, and the magnificent view over Locarno and the Lago Maggiore from the pilgrimage church Madonna del Sasso. You can reach the church easily by funicular or by foot taking the Via Crucis Locarno is the starting point for a wide range of activities: whether sailing on Lake Maggiore - for example from Ascona to the Brissago islands - or energetic mountain bike excursions in the valleys of the Sopraceneri. The valleys of Ticino offer several hundred kilometres of hiking paths, there are 700 km of these in the Vallemaggia alone. For the adventurous, there is action such as bungee jumping or canyoning. Or how about a visit to the Teatro Dimitri in Verscio.

Fun and action on two wheels!

Furthermore, smaller rooms on the first and second floor as well as a restaurant are part of the offer. The Palexpo Locarno is air-conditioned and equipped with high tech technology. Sought after ambiance, personalised and stylish, it is often the venue for important conferences, conventions, concerts, events, science and art exhibitions, thanks to its attractive courtyard with its roof renewed by the architect Mario Botta, and its welcoming, elegantly decorated conference room. The CST is a branch of the Swiss Federal Office of Sport (FOSPO) in Magglingen. CST provides excellent facilities for many sporting disciplines and for running sports camps and training courses involving a very wide range of users, from young school pupils to top-level athletes. CST also hosts many sports events of various kinds. It is the policy of many companies to foster team spirit among their staff. Sport is an excellent way of achieving this goal. Why not enhance your company's staff offering by including sports such as archery, climbing, golf or another type of sport? CST is the ideal venue for adding a sporting element – and hence adding value – to conferences, seminars and workshops. The atmosphere is youthful and dynamic, and the setting picturesque and stimulating. The infrastructure offers countless opportunities for leisure and in-depth training. CST is particularly well suited to offering this type of event in the period from November to February, thanks to the mild climate and numerous covered sports facilities. Comfortable rooms (accommodating 10-750 participants) and quality catering ensure that your needs will be met.

In 1971 no permanent theatre existed in the Ticino. For Dimitri and his wife Gunda this was a challenge and they decided to establish their own theatre in the centre of Verscio. The Teatro Dimitri became the meeting-place where Clown Dimitri and his fellow artists, actors, musicians, dancers and jugglers were able to present their shows. A buvette was attached to the theatre, and whether you just called in for a drink or maybe for a chat with an artist after his show, it became a stock exchange of ideas for patrons and artists alike.

The castle also hosts a museum of archaeology. It can be rented for events, private functions, meetings and conferences. The atmosphere is magically medieval.

Special Events A typical evening in a Ticinese Grotto
