These species of fish become more active during warmer weather making them especially fun to fish for this time of year. Learn to big game hunt, June 12, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., at Albany Rifle and Pistol Club. This class is geared towards people who have never huntedbefore and open to all age 9 and older. We' ll talk about what you need to know to go big game hunting: licensing, equipment, locations, how and where to hunt and what gear you need. The cost of the class is $12 and includes lunch. Leave young wildlife in the wild Deer fawns and other young animals are being born in the wild. Remember to not pick them up or disturb them, even if they are alone. While many lakes and some rivers are open year around, the May 22 opener brings an expanded list of destinations, mostly rivers, including some of the smaller tributaries. Make this the year to find out why trout fishing is so popular in Oregon. Explore a little deeper. Whether you' re a fly fisherman or bait-caster, looking for cutthroat trout, redsides, rainbows or browns, Oregon has you covered. Read the regional reports for the latest where- and how-to's. Running Wild 5K & Outdoor Skills Event on June 25 Bring the whole family to this 5K walk/run with a wild twist on Saturday, June 25 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at E.E. Wilson Wildlife Area near Corvallis. Participants can try four different outdoor skills at stations along the trail: 1) trap shooting with a shotgun, 2) archery at the E.E. Wilson Archery Range, 3) spin casting at a target and 4) identifying wildlife tracks (where you can also create a plaster cast of different animal prints to take home). More info Here come the whales! May and June are great times to view migrating gray whales off the Oregon coast. Some gray whales make their way up to summer feeding grounds in the Bering Sea, while others are part-time residents and stay off the Oregon coast from June until November. Quite a few gray whales were spotted last week in the nearshore waters off of Brookings and Port Orford. The best time to view whales is on calm days — as stormy weather tends to make viewing challenging. Look for whales as they surface to blow air, and occasionally flip their talks above the water. Don't forget to bring binoculars! 36 Family Fishing Events happening this year These popular events take place in some great places and are typically stocked in advance with a lot of fish. On top of that, ODFW provides loaner rods, reels, tackle and bait, along with helpful tips from experienced angling instructors. List of events GRANDE RONDE RIVER: trout, whitefish, bass The Grande Ronde is now open for trout all year. Currently fishing will be difficult because of water conditions. As the season progresses smallmouth bass will move into the river and provide good catch rates. IMNAHA RIVER: trout, bass Currently the river is very high and trout fishing will be difficult. Trout should be active this spring. Smallmouth bass will move into the lower river as summer progresses and can provide some great catch rates. The lmnaha will open June 15 for spring Chinook salmon from the confluence with the Snake River to the Summit Creek Bridge. Bag limits will be 2 hatchery adults and 5 jacks. Anglers may not continue to fish for jacks once their adult limit is reached. Jacks are salmon under 24 inches. Wild Chinook should be released immediately and unharmed. Check daily for closure updates with creel staff, online, or with the Enterprise ODFW office. Bull trout are available for catch and release and should not be harmed. Biologists will be monitoring the salmon run and a decision on a season will be made in June.
