Now is the time to see deer and elk in velvet Mike Simonis Ron Simonis Now is a good time to see bull elk and buck deer in velvet, although they will be shedding the velvet soon. The good news for people manager who want to see these majestic animals is bucks and bulls tend to be more visible while they are in velvet because they spend more -s ' I s-s s . • time in the open. Bucks and bulls want to avoid damaging actively growing antlers so they avoid brushy areas. Jewell Meadows Wildlife Area near Seaside, is a refuge for Oregon's Roosevelt elk and a great place to see elk in velvet this time of year. Jewell Meadows is one of just 23 ODFW wildlife areas across the state where visitors can see deer, elk, birds, and many other species OREGOII TRAIL For summer fun, discover Oregon's warm water fishing locales TRADER Trout stocking has all but ceased in many parts of the state while the hatcheries wait for the cooler temperatures that cold water 'Qi species prefer. Take heart — this is when warmwater fish such as largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, and caffish deserve a hard look. Our biologists from all over the state are talking about warmwater opportunities. Here are a few suggestions: Lake Selmac, Fern Ridge Reservoir or Henry Hagg Lake for largemouth bass; the Columbia River near Troutdale for walleye or crappie fishing at Benson Lake, Foster Reservoir or McKay Reservoir. There are dozens of other locations. Inaccessible boat ramps, gravel bars, log jams, and other hazards are more prevalent during warm water conditions and LES HEXDERSOX/KARL BAIAI lead to acccidents, many of which are avoidable. The Oregon State Marine Board has issued some tips for boaters to consider during 541-968-2918 the summer months for a safe and enjoyable outing. Bear season opens Aug. 1 Some districts are reporting an early berry crop so it might be good year to get out early. Hunters have until September 30 to purchase a fall bear tag. Gray whale sightings Gray whales are migrating and we are hearing reports of many sightings in Depoe Bay. The Oregon State Parks Whale Watching Center is a good place to check out. Razor clamming closed from Columbia River to Tillamook Head Just are minder that razor clamming is closed from the Columbia River to Tillamook Head July 15-September 30. This is an annual closure to reduce disturbance of young razor clams. Consider using a rockfish descender These handy little gizmos are an effective release tool anglers can use to help rebuild and extend bottom-fishing opportunities on the coast. Available at tackle shops up and down the coast, descenders help bottom fish get back to depths of 100 ft. or more-which keeps them from dying from "the bends" at the surface. Here is a short video showing how to use them. Wildlife pre-scouting Now is the time for archers and rifle hunters to begin their annual pre-scouting trips to the woods, August 27 is not far away. Hunters should be spending this next two months locating the elk and deer herds. Besides, it's a great time to be in the woods to avoid most of the heat found in the valleys. Fishing for groundfish closes beyond 20 fathoms to protect yelloweye rockfish The recreational groundfish season on the Oregon coast will close outside the 20-fathom line this Friday, July 15, in order to protect yelloweye rockfish, which are more common in deeper waters. Sport halibut fisheries will remain unchanged. ODFW encourages anglers to release all prohibited rockfish by using a descending device to safely return the fish to depth. Even fish which are severely bloated can survive after being released at depth.News release Tuna now being caught out of Newport Allbacore tuna are being off the Oregon coast. The hottest albacore fishing last week was in Winchester Bay and Charleston, with an average catch of 4-6 fish per angler. Tuna fishing has improved off Newport and Depoe Bay, too, and tuna catch was observed in ports all the way up to Astoria. Point savers available thru Nov. 30 If you didn't get around to applying by May 15, you can still get a big game point saver. Use this application (or find it at www.odfw.corn under Hunting) and mail or fax it in no later than Nov. 30. (Late point savers are not available online or at license sale agents). Summer steelhead returns surprisingly positive Summer steelhead returns this year are beating the 5- and 10-year averages, which translates into some great fishing opportunity in Willamette Valley streams like the Sandy, Clackamas, Santiam, and McKenzie systems. Learn to big game hunt, June 12, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., at Albany Rifle and Pistol Club. This class is geared towards people who have never hunted before and open to all age 9 and older. We' ll talk about what you need to know to go big game hunting: licensing, equipment, locations, how and where to hunt and what gear you need. The cost of the class is $12 and includes lunch.
