Weekend fishing opportunitiesFishing at Wallowa Lake is good for kokanee, rainbow, and lake trout Smallmouth bass fishing is picking up on the lower John Day. GRANDE RONDE RIVER:Trout, Bass The Grande Ronde is running highbut the water clarity is good. Look for trout in the slow margins and around structure. Avariety of methods will be successful including bait, lures and flies. The river often offers up some large trout this time of year. Bass fishing will likely remain slow until July when flows recede and water temperatures rise. Remember, only adipose-fin clipped trout may be retained and all bull trout must be released unharmed. IMNAHA RIVER:trout, bass The lmnaha River is open for troutFlows are high but the water clarity is good so fish close to the banks and in back eddies behind large structure. Some salmonflies may be around and fish may be keying in on them; however, many techniques will catch fish. Bass fishing will likely be slow in the lower river until flows drop and water temperatures come up. Remember, below the mouth of Big Sheep Creek only adipose-fin clipped trout may be harvested. All bull trout must be released unharmed. The lmnaha River will be open for spring Chinook angling starting June 21 from the mouth upstream 45 miles to Summit Creek Bridge. Anglers may retain two adipose fin-clipped spring Chinook adults and five adipose fin-clipped jacks per day, with two daily jack limits in possession. Chinook jacks are salmon between 15 and 24 inches in length. Anglers do not need to record jack catch on their combined angling tags, but it is illegal to continue fishing for jack Chinook once the adult bag limit is met. Unmarked (wildj fish must be released carefully and unharmed. A valid Columbia River endorsement is required for this fishery. Check the ODFW website regularly for closure information. JOHN DAY RIVER:spring Chinook, smallmouth bass, troutA20 mile portion of the upper Mainstem John Day is open to spring Chinook fishing until June 15. Beginning at the bridge 200 feet above the mouth of the North Fork up to the mouth of Rattlesnake Creek at Picture Gorge. The limit is two adultsalmon per day, either hatcheryor wild, andup to 5jack salmon per day. Use ofbait, lures or flies is allowed. A fishing license, a Columbia River Endorsement and Combined Angling Tag are required to fish for Chinook. Flows are high but clear. Angler success has been low so far. Smallmouth bass fishing has improved to good in the lower river. Trout fishing is now open in the upper river and has been good on the South Fork and on the Middle Fork. WALLOWALAKE: rainbow trout, kokanee, lake trout Anglers reported good success for stocked and holdover rainbow trout over the weekend. A few anglers had success catching 10-20lb lake trout and even picked a couple up while trolling for Kokanee. Kokanee anglers have also reported finding 20 fish limits of kokanee by jigging at the south end of the lake. Look for fish around 75 feet with a bait tipped jig. Don't overlook the north end of the lake where kokanee angling is generally best in spring. As spring progresses and water temperatures warm catch rates will improve.

Once again it is time to start the annual fire hydrant testing and maintenance program. The City of La Grande Public Works Department will be conducting these tests again this year starting June11,2014. This program is very important to allow the public works department to identify the quantity of water available for firefighting purposes and it serves to rid the city's water distribution system of accumulations of sedimentation deposits over the past year. Citizens who experience any unusual water clarity problems after the hydrants are flushed are encouraged to turn on a cold-water faucet outside of the house and let it run for 5 to 10 minutes. This will normally clear up the agitated water from the service line to the home. Further problems may be referred to the La Grande Public Works Department by calling 962-1325. Testingis expected to take place Monday thru Thursday from 8:00 a.m. fo 4:00 p.m. unfil ALL hydranfs are fesfed.
