Dress like a Winner Sportswear may not be the first thing that comes to mind when we talk about fashion, but thanks to the bold creativity of designers like Alexander Wang and Marc Jacobs, now you can have the look of a champion, with or without that PGA title. By putting sportswear on their catwalks, these designers have allowed us to take our track pants and crop tops out of our gym bag and into the fashion mainstream. Comfort is highly important and a key essential to this trend, the trend makes use of tracksuit bottoms, and grey jersey shorts with heels to add femininity. Converse pumps, or hi-tops update the look for casual day wear. Simplicity is key to this trend, and to bring effortless style. Even if sports weren’t your thing growing up, there is no better time than now to start to dress up as your favorite sports star. Alexandra Wang

BACK NINE AT THE WORLD CLASSIC Andrew Welford Head Golf Professional
How to Approach Playing The Inward #9
The back nine at World Classic is very different from the front nine in many ways. As I previously mentioned when talking about the front nine, the back nine is 497 yards longer in length from the blue tees. There is a lot more sand, or at least it seems that way. Many of the tee shots are incredibly demanding like the 10th hole for example.
The 15th a very tough long par 5 with one of the worlds longest waste bunkers running down the entire left side of the hole. Many pot bunkers need to be avoided and if you enter one of many greenside bunkers, I wish you the world of luck. All I can say on this hole is there are “bunkers, and bunkers everywhere”.
From the Blue tee box a narrow fairway sits to your left with a rather large waste bunker sitting off to the right, collecting many stray balls. For the long hitters, if the wind is blowing from behind, the second fairway is reachable which makes the hole dramatically easier. However the green is in my opinion one of the best, not too undulating but very easy to three putt for some reason.
The 16th hole is underrated in my opinion, and I love it. A semi-blind tee shot where you need to avoid the waste bunker on the left. Recently the reeds have been removed to open up the view of a beautiful green, with the stream running in front of it. This has really enhanced the look of the hole and even though it is short, two good shots are required here.
The 11th is my favourite hole on the course. I believe this par 3 could fit into any world-class golf course. An elevated green that is exposed seems a little firmer than the others. It’s narrow and surrounded by some of the highest bunker walls you will ever see. Par is a great score here. The 12th is a nice hole, demanding a well-placed tee shot, quite a short par 5 especially for the long hitters, but the green is severely sloped and again chipping close to the hole is very challenging. The 13th hole, WOW! One of the most unique holes in golf. I have never seen anything like it. I still smile every time I stand on the tee-box. A demanding tee shot is required flying over the water causeway, also avoiding many pot bunkers and high mounds. Half way along this hole reaches the highest point on the World Classic, and from here you can see a beautiful view of the ocean in the distance. Over all the undulating mounds is the scariest green I have ever seen. The 14th hole is a beautiful short par 4 from the blue tee box, but measures an unbelievable 509 yards from the black, and from there is possibly the toughest tee shot on the entire course. Reaching the fairway is an achievement in itself.
LL apr-june2012.indd 10
The 17th. Just when you had a rest previously on one of the easier holes, comes this brilliant par 3. Even with an Island green enough room was created to sneak in a bunker so no hole on the World classic remained bunker–less. Based on the 17th at TPC Sawgrass, this hole plays approx 100 yards longer from the black tees. The 18th. “Looks a bit like Mongolia”. Well I heard a Member phrased it as this and I liked it. A demanding finishing hole, bunkers are equally placed, it seems at every distance, for the short and long hitters. A narrow fairway tucks in on the right, and if you manage to hit it probably the toughest second shot on any par 4 now faces the player. Courage is required and is often rewarded here; a par is a fantastic way to finish your round. The nine holes of golf are fraught with danger and in my mind is a lot tougher than the front nine. Happy Golfing to you all

MAINTENANCE WORKS UPDATE Bradley Leahey Agronomy Director
Golf Course Maintenance
The wet season of 2011 saw an unprecedented amount of rain in Singapore. All in all, over 3,016mm of rainfall was received here at Laguna National in 2011. An astonishing 3m of rainfall over 137-days was collected throughout 2011. That is a lot of rain, even for a tropical island like Singapore. To put it into perspective, the average rainfall on an Australian golf course is half the amount. Therefore, one can imagine that maintaining a golf course, ensuring that the best playing conditions are achieved, under such weather can be a challenge. The Laguna Golf Course Maintenance Team is tasked with this daunting challenge. To tackle the situation, drainage installation works are done, improving the wet areas that were found to be holding water & unplayable. These drainage works will continue on throughout the remaining of the year on both courses. Works on the Masters Course Continuous efforts are implemented to help upkeep the Masters Course. Improvements Members can look forward to include the reconstruction of the tee-box at hole 10 and the blue tee-box at hole 9, improving the drainage at hole 3 and hole 8, and the addition of new black / blue tee-box positions, Members can also enjoy some of the many enhancements to the course, including the upgraded turf surface of the Blue Tee box at hole 10, improved water drainage on the fairways, and the additional drainage around the catch basins. Works on the World Classic The World Classic is the pride and glory of Laguna and taking care of this baby is no easy task. The team had done an excellent job upgrading hole 15 to allow buggies access. To tackle the wet weather, additional drainage were also installed at holes 1, 2, 3 and 9.
LL apr-june2012.indd 11
Hole 10 Masters Course Tee-Box
Upcoming improvements include additional drainage around the catch basins and holes 13, 14, 15 and 16, and improving the playability of hole 5. Landscaping In upkeeping the beautiful landscapes of Laguna golf courses, the team has been busy improving the current gardens throughout the Masters Course, upgrades are being introduced at the gardens at hole 8 of the Masters Course. More wild grasses will also be planted around the World Classic Course on holes 2 & 14, giving the course character. The landscaping at the front of the Clubhouse entrance will also be enhanced with additional plants. It is the mission of the good staff at the Golf Course Maintenance Department to strive and ensure every Golf is treated to the best playing conditions. So next time you are on the golf course, do take a look around to see what new improvements have been done.

ENJOY THE NEW SWEET SPOTS AT OUR CLUB This was the first monthly medals for 2012 at our Club. Those who missed this should contemplate registering early for the next medals. The enhanced event is one of the many transformations we are seeing at the Club. It is business not as usual. It is meant to increase the enjoyment of our Club and activities.
Yeo Guan Kai Captain
It was an ordinary Saturday afternoon at the Club. It soon became extraordinary. At the registration, we got a different score card: a score card used by the pros and in a proper tournament. We also received detailed pin positions. The greens were specially prepared, cut and rolled to a fast 9.5. Some of the rough were kept reminiscent of when we hosted the Singapore Masters. Even the perfect weather seemed provisioned and the winds indented to make the course challenging enough for a tournament. After the game, we were greeted by a hospitality marquee with the smoke and smell of barbeque. As we savoured the satay, otak and sausages, we watched the scores come in and posted. There was excitement to see who tamed the sleek greens and high winds. The later flights finished their final hole with applause from the golfers watching from the marquee. Staff of the golf operations came out in full force to help serve us. Even the golf academy pros joined us to help talk about our play for the day. The prize presentation completed the day. The winners drank beer from their glistering crystal mugs.
LL apr-june2012.indd 14
At the last event - the President’s Cup, we were interrupted by rain and lightning for more than an hour. Nobody complained because we were feted at the halfway house with yummy beef sliders, satay and beef ball soup. We also had a refreshing lemongrass drink and mojitos to wash the food down. The same mojitos were served at Hole 3 to perk us up to tackle arguably the most challenging par 3 in Singapore. Recently we also had a sold-out durian party. It was no ordinary durian fair; it was a connoisseur’s durian tasting. You can expect more such interesting activities like these, on and off the course. A little bird told me we are checking out crustaceans for a crab connoisseur’s night. Talk about the best way to a man’s heart. The Club house has been spruced up as we speak. There is now a hallway of fame and champions as you walk to the locker rooms. You cannot miss photos of Tiger Woods. It was a shame we could not include more of you members when Tiger visited Singapore for the first time because it was a private event with stringent protocols. Still, Laguna National made history and headlines as the first Singapore club he visited and played on. When asked what he thought of our World Classic course, Tiger remarked wittedly, “It must be tough for you guys.” It was reported that he took photos to send back to his course design team. And we get to play this world class course every day. To further help us play the course better and enjoy the experience, we will be giving all Members a course layout booklet. We have also opened some holes to permit buggy on course. So come and enjoy the Club and events. There are more gems to come.

WINNING IS NOT EVERYTHING….. THE NEED FOR HANDICAPPING
Like with most sports, people take part in it for different motivation. Some love the sports for the challenge. They commit themselves to achieving excellence in what they do. Others love to compete for the honor and prestige of winning tournaments. Then there are others who just take part in sports for the fun, for the exercise and for the camaraderie. Many of us play the sports for the fun; be it for exercise or for the camaraderie. The response I received from fellow Laguna Members when I request them to submit their scorecards sport this attitude. “I’m just a social golfer. I do not take part in tournaments. I’m just out there for the fun, the exercise and to be with my friends. What handicap? It can be any number. It does not concern me” are common responses. So why is having a golf handicap index necessary and beneficial for you, Laguna and golfers at large? The business reason is Laguna is an affiliate Member of the Singapore Golf Association (SGA). So are all the other Golf Clubs in Singapore. SGA has an exclusive license agreement with the United States Golf Association (USGA) to use its Handicap System on a Singapore national basis. This license also grants the right to SGA affiliated Clubs (Laguna is one) to issue Golf handicap to her members. Imagine a Golf Club without this capacity to issue handicap index to her Members. Who would join this club?
LL apr-june2012.indd 16
This Handicap System is also maintained and monitored to ensure compliance with the USGA Handicap System and to provide adequate peer review of the Handicap Index that it issues to its Members. This is the reason why golfers need to have handicap index. The objective here is to make the game of golf more enjoyable by enabling players of differing abilities to compete on an equitable basis, be it in a social game or when competing in tournaments. Many of us would have experienced the cries of “Buaya, Crocodile” during prize presentation for golf events. In most instances this outburst is for the winner with a high handicap index winning the major prize amongst a field of much better players than the winner. The more significant the prize, the louder usually is the roar. This is why a nationally administered and monitored handicap system to regulate and monitor handicap index is required and is beneficial to golfers. Now for the reasons why you need an official handicap index, even if you do not have intention to take part in competitions and play for big stakes, like some golfers do. For one, if you take part in a golf charity event and win a hole-in-one prize,
3/26/12 5:07:55 PM

the organizer may require you to produce a USGA handicap index before you can claim your prize. Another reason is a USGA handicap index will allow you access to clubs which require showing your handicap card before they allow you admission.
fails to post an acceptable score as soon as practicable (a week) after completion of his round of golf (9 holes or 18 holes), the system automatically post a penalty score equal to the lowest handicap index differential in the player’s scoring record (20 scores or actual number of recent scores).
So for the reasons highlighted above, Laguna need your support to keep compliant with the license agreement of the USGA handicap System and to submit your scorecard after each game. Here at Laguna, we have implemented some measures to help you remember to submit scorecards after each game.
Subsequently, if player’s scoring record accumulates 40% or more penalty scores in his scoring record, Laguna Handicap Committee may withdraw the player’s handicap index from the Handicap System. Player may appeal against such action to be taken against him. When a player’s handicap index has been withdrawn, he or she will not be permitted to take part in tournaments. Player may also encounter difficulties gaining access to other golf clubs without a USGA handicap index.
1. Your friendly starters at tee boxes will remind you of the need to submit your scorecards before the start of your game. If you do not already have a scorecard, ask them for one. 2. After your game, golf operations staff may also remind you again to submit your scorecards 3. Laguna will soon have self- input capability of your golf scores. Computer terminals will be located in easy-toaccess places for you to enter your golf scores. You only need to input your gross score and the tees you played off from e.g. 95 white tees. 4. Your friendly and helpful F&B servers will help you turn in your scorecard if you request this service of them. 5. There are also scorecard boxes in the changing rooms just in case you may not have turned in your scorecard at the other earlier locations.
Laguna Handicap Committee sees to that scores are posted, all elements of the USGA handicap system are followed, and the integrity of each handicap index issued is maintained. Laguna Handicap Committee comprises myself as Chairman, and Members Goh Hian Poo, Dustin Wilburn, Celia Teh, Chua Leng Heok, golf Manager and Lynn Chia. We meet monthly. We stand ready to help you understand and appreciate Laguna/USGA handicap system and we seek your cooperation and support to help Laguna stay compliant to the requirements of USGA Handicap System, both as an affiliate Member of SGA and as a license operative of the USGA Handicap System.
USGA handicap system also details actions to be taken for non-scorecard submissions and also if such non-submission of scorecards becomes excessive. In the first instance if player

WALKING DOWN MEMORY LYNN Senior Golf Executive, Lynn Chua, is one of the longest serving staff in Laguna National Golf and Country Club. A 18 years career filled with laughter and tears, victories and failures, Lynn is a true blue lagunian and an inspiration to all she works with. A netball school player and sports enthusiast, Lynn was always an athletic student at school. After completing her A levels, naturally she wanted to work in a sports related industry. A recommendation from a friend brought her and Laguna together. That was the overture to Lynn’s 18 years romance with the Club. When she first joined as a Golf Guide (GG), Lynn was new to the sport (golf). Being a GG, she had the opportunity to be up close and personal with the sport. She started to pick up the sport and be it her innate athleticism or raw talent; she became a pretty good golfer. “I will always remember the hole-in-one I had in 1995 / 1996 at the Master Course hole 8, it is till today my only hole-in-one and i will never ever forget how happy I was. It still brings out a smile every time I think of it.” From GG, she became a GG Duty Master and in 2002, was eventually promoted to Golf Executive. It is not often that we meet people who are truly happy with their job, but we can safely say, with regards to Lynn, she had truly found her second home.
experienced. You may find it unbelievable, but there are very few dull days in my job. And it is the anticipation of unforeseen adventures and new encounters that drives me to do what I do.” According to her, she does not have many dull moments in her job. Whether it is accompanying VIPs on the golf courses, or sharing thoughts and ideas with Members, she is always soaking in the moment and ever ready for the next challenge. During her time here, she had seen her fair share of colleagues leave for different challenges. Instead of being demoralized, her positive attitude towards life makes her yearn for the different knowledge and experience each new colleague brings. Another facet of her job that she loves is the opportunity to rub shoulders with some of her idols and celebrities. Throughout the 18 years, Lynn had met a good number of the who’s who in golf (i.e Tiger Woods, Ernie Els), in entertainment and even in politics (i.e EMS Goh Chok Tong). Although she spend less time playing competitively these days and more time planning and running golf functions like the Caltex Masters and Tiger Woods visit, a little part of her heart and soul will always be on the golf courses, especially on hole 8 of the Master Course, as there was the place a young girl, even if for that brief moment, reach the acme of the game.
“Many people would ask me what is the reason I would stay at a job, my very first job, for so long. Well, I truly like the nature of my job here, the people I meet and the lessons I

interview with Chef Mark In this issue of Laguna Lifestyle, we decided to do a different type of interview, as compared to our usual Members interview. In this issue, we take a look from within, at the many hidden gems of Laguna. This time, we put the spot light on Chef Mark, from Lakes CafĂŠ.

Before he held his first shovel…… Being a Chef was not always on Mark’s mind. As a teenager, another elusive “art form” captivated the mind and imagination of young Mark; DJ. “I recalled when I was about 13 years old, my father was not supportive of me learning how to spin the disc or mix the music (DJ). To satisfy my passion for DJ-ing, I would lie to my dad that I was going to my uncle’s to help out at his car workshop. When in fact, I was going to the clubs to DJ.” If you know Chef Mark, you will notice that he is a firm believer in the spirit of excellence. Even back in the old days, when he was a DJ, he would pursue the craft with such tenacity that saw him turn pro at the age of 16, spinning at famous clubs like Fire, Tornado and TGIF Being one of the top DJ in 90s, Mark had the opportunity to travel extensively, to far reach countries like Outer Mongolia.
So what makes him decide to exchange the turntable for a frying pan? Although Mark was always interested in cooking as a child, he truly got a taste of it (pun not intended) when he was a cook in the army. His stint as an army cook was the start of his illustrious journey in a gastronomic adventure.
to Chile for a Food Exchange program. At the Grand Hyatt, Santiago, Mark was flying Singapore’s flag high, serving his brand of fine cuisine to international celebrities and foreign delegates, including one delegate Iglesias.
Mark for Applebee’s A little know fact: Mark was also the consultant in the company that brought in Applebee’s to Singapore. He work with international actress, Vicki Zhao, and husband to design the menu that would suit the local taste. With experience in Japanese, Western, French and so many other styles, which is the one style is Chef Mark’s favorite. “Being a true blue Singaporean, I like a blend and fusion of styles. Favorite cooking style; anything that fuses with French cooking. I like my baguette.”
Why Laguna? Why Lakes Café? One who enjoys challenges, the new environment was simply too enticing for Mark to pass on. So when he was asked to join Laguna, he took the challenge. At Lakes Café, besides being the Chef that designs the menus and prepares the food, Mark also has the opportunity to learn new skills, like mentoring junior chefs.
The journey began with Mark landing a job as a kitchen apprentice at a Japanese Restaurant at Ngee Ann City. During those times, his colleagues coin the phrase “5 days, 5 fingers”, due to his constant mishap in the kitchen. Wanting to learn western cuisine after being in a Japanese restaurant, he joined Empire Café at Raffles Hotel, again as an apprentice. At Raffles Hotel, his ability to master recipes quickly and innate talent won him much favors from the Chefs there. He got a break when he was appointed Head Chef at famous French restaurant, Brasserie Wolf. Having learned French cuisine at the Pines Club, Mark brought the already established franchise to greater heights. In 2008, during Mark’s stint as Head Chef at Changi Village Hotel, he was selected to be part of an international delegation, which accompanied Prime Minister Lee

Yamuna Body Rolling (YBR) YBR represents a new type of stretching: not static, not ballistic, nor active isolated stretching. In these forms of stretching, it’s mostly the body of the muscle that does the stretch, while the tendons often pull toward the bone. By contrast, YBR stretching is weight bearing, and it works the muscle’s entire length, including the tendons. It starts by stimulating bone. Then the ball slides into the muscle’s origin, leading the entire muscle to elongate out toward its insertion.

Panda, Dragon, Lion and a Deity? Laguna had the annual Chinese New Year celebrations or Tuan Bai on 4 February 2012. A day filled with abundance of laughter and joy, Members and their family were treated to an unforgettable day of great novelty golf game, sumptuous dinner and awesome Chinese New Year performances, including the must have for the Year of the Dragon; dragon dance.
T
he day started out with the Hong Bao Golf Special Competition. Unlike your usual golf competition, the event was filled with novelty challenges and guest appearance from the Laguna’s Prosperity Panda! We are sure even the most seasoned of golfers would not have had the opportunity to tee off with a panda. The Tuan Bai dinner at night was, to quote a Member, “the most touching event ever organized by the Club”. The God of Fortune, despite his “busy schedule”, also grace the event, welcoming and blessing Members and their family with bountiful blessings and happy returns. The night erupted with excitement when the lion dance and “glow in the dark” Dragon Dance, that’s right, “glow in the dark”, started, dancing in and out of each table, it was truly a mesmerizing performance. Another surprise of the night was the staff performance. Made up of staff from different departments, mostly non-Chinese, they came together to extend Chinese New Year well wishes in Mandarin, and performed a familiar tune to all. After the overwhelming success of this year’s event, the challenge is now on the organizing committee to come up with a even better event next year.
