London Calling
London, one of the most popular cities to visit is an urban metropolitan teeming with life. The city boasts of many museums, art galleries, nightclubs, restaurants, bars, and so much more that it’s impossible to be bored.
lifestyle

Apart from the usual entertainment venues, there are a few sites in London that are quite distinctive, such as the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, the Prime Meridian, and for the shoppers, we have Bond Street, and the bargain hunters haven, Primark. But as fascinating as these places are, London has most recently been in the news as the location for this year’s summer Olympics from 27 July to 12 August. So where should you start if you are planning to visit London during this exciting time?
Thousands and thousands of visitors will be visiting London during the Olympics, so you can be sure that the public transport system will be working at full capacity. There are many ways to go about the city during the 2012 Games, an interesting one would be to join the daily walking tours. The Blue Badge guides will take you from Bromleyby-Bow tube station to the walkway around the 2012 Games Park, which is currently not open to the public. The guides provide information about the 2012 games and offer an introduction to the traditions and history of the area, providing interesting insights to the coming summer games. Sports fans will need to know what are the more popular sports and be sure to get your tickets early to avoid disappointment. Besides the usual
ticketed events like football matches and the opening ceremony, you can catch some of the action free of charge from the streets. For instance, the triathlon, marathon, and road cycling are all free to watch. Similar to what Singapore did during the Youth Olympics Games, if you have a ticket for one of the events, public transport around London is free on that day. London is of course not all about the Olympics. The usual sights of London are always open to the sightseeing public. Westminster Abbey is a huge favourite with tourists, particularly after the recent fairytale wedding of Prince William of Wales and Catherine Middleton. Westminster Abbey is one of London’s grandest religious venues. As many as 18 British monarchs lie buried within its chambers, as well as a number
of important statesmen and poets. A special corner of the Abbey has been dedicated to poets, commemorating Shakespeare and Lord Byron. And of course, you can’t come to London without making a stop at the Prime Meridian of the world. This is the exact point of 0 degrees for the line of longitude on the atlas, situated in Greenwich. Shopping is a delight in London. From major fashion labels to the high street fashion of Topshop to the bargain mega stores of Primark, the city has all your needs and fancies covered. Whether you’re going for the Olympics or just for a little sightseeing, London has so much to offer in terms of tradition, history, and entertainment.

GOLF SCORES FOR HANDICAPPING Peter Lim Handicap Committe Chairman
How reflective is handicap index of a golfer’s playing ability? The answer lies with the golfer himself. His handicap index can be as reflective as he desires and ensures it to be. Why do I say this? Golfer writes and submits his own scores. These scores are then input into the handicap system based on the submitted scorecards by the Golf office or are input into the system directly by the golfer himself. It is an honest system. The handicap system does provide for adjustments for high scores, often termed as “blow holes” by golfers. All scores for handicap purposes, including tournament scores, are subject to the application of Equitable Stroke Control (ESC). This mandatory procedure reduces high scores for handicap purposes in order to make handicaps more representative of a player’s potential ability. Most of us may not be aware there is table for such high score adjustment. This table is shown below. 18-hole course handicap

A player with a Course Handicap of 13 has a maximum number of 7 for any hole regardless of par A player with a Course Handicap of 42 has a maximum of 10 for any hole. In addition to this procedural provision, the handicap committee meets monthly to ensure compliance with the USGA Handicap System and to provide adequate peer review of the Handicap Index that it issues to its members. The Handicap Committee is the only authority within a club that can issue or adjust a member’s Handicap Index. If you have questions on handicapping or your handicap index, you are encouraged to pose your questions to the Handicap Committee or better still, chat with any of the Handicap Committee members, named below. Peter Lim, Dustin Wilburn, Celia Teh, Goh Hian Poo, Chua Leng Heok and Lynn Chia.

Let’s Scramble Strategy Team strategy is inherent in texas scramble. You appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of each player and you naturally organize yourselves to increase the odds and reduce the risks. For example, a straight shooter may drive off first so that the long hitter has the comfort level to rip it for broke. Encouragement While it is logical to deduce that texas scramble favours the stronger golfers and that they do all the work, this format does encourage the weaker players. A short hitter may find the centre of the fairway or a par 3 green. He or she may contribute a good chip or putt to birdie the hole or save par.
Yeo Guan Kai Captain
For the longest time, our past captain, Peter Madhavan and I both wanted to introduce the texas scramble format to our Club fixtures. We finally got our wish and played the texas scramble format earlier this year. The texas scramble is played as a team: All four players tee off; the flight then chooses the best ball to play next and each player then takes the second shot from there. And so on till one of the four players holes out. There are variations of scramble and in the texas scramble, each player must contribute at least four tee shots for the 18-hole round. I do not know the origins of the name scramble to this format. But I guess the notions of huddling and mixing explain the name. Bonding The texas scramble encourages team building and bonding. Whether you playing with your regular buddies, or flight mates you meeting for the first time such as in a corporate or charity event, you will naturally come together to assess each of the four shots and decide on the best one to play next. The ball to play may not necessarily be the longest drive or nearest the hole as it depends on the lie, break or approach.
In a corporate event, a VIP or customer who is not a regular golfer can contribute and not feel embarrassed to return a high 100 score in a stroke play event. Or for that matter, fear causing delay with errant shots. Inevitably, the four players will encourage each other. High fives and birdie cheers are very common in a texas scramble match. Corporate Texas scramble are ideal for corporate or charity tournaments for the above reasons. In addition it promotes fast play because of the best ball concept. In fact I advocate that all corporate tournaments should be played this way especially for full 36-flight shotgun start with very social golfers. It promotes team building and suited for the occasion. Birdies When you play in a texas scramble tournament, your score card will read like that of a pro. Pars are basic expectations and there will be birdies galore. I once returned a score card of 59 – for my scramble team – and yet we did not win the tournament! While the low score is totally not one’s credit, the texas scramble does give the social golfer, the sense of a game in the life of a pro. It certainly reminds me to respect the touring pro for what they need to do, in not one but four rounds for a tournament. Enjoy This story is not about texas scramble per se. It is also about enjoying the varieties of the game and at our Club. The Club is presenting new activities and experiences. Come and let’s scramble together.

the ONE with the green touch
Everyone at Laguna National Golf and Country Club would like to extend a big warm welcome to our new Golf Course Superintendent, T. Puvan! Invited by Club General Manager Bradley Leahey, Puvan has the challenging tasks of overseeing both the Masters course and the World Classic.
A Golf Course Superintendent is a role with a very unique job description and is one job not everyone can undertake. One needs to first and foremost love golf, nature, and big green grass fields, steep hills in the sun. Puvan started out working for a property developer way back in 1989. His first golf course related job was also with them. By fate, the property developers were planning to build a golf course and tasked Puvan to be part of the project team. That project was a success and the famous Serendah Golf Links was born. He went on to build an amazing career in golf course maintenance, landscaping and golf course management, working with some of the best golf courses in some top golf clubs from Malaysia and around the region like Tanjong Puteri Golf Club and Palm Garden Golf Club.
A founding member and former president of the Malaysia Golf Course Superintendent Association of Malaysia, Puvan demonstrates that when you are passionate about something, it is no longer just a job, but a way a life. Even in his free time, he takes care of the greens in his home, ‘landscaping” them to perfection. Having a “green” dialogue with him is an interesting one. He can go on and on about the different types of grass used on the golf course. That was one of the key quality that Club GM, Bradley, took notice when Puvan was a consultant for one of Bradley’s projects. Puvan is fluent in English, Malay, Tamil and Cantonese. With his years of top level experience on golf course management, it is truly an exciting future ahead for all golfers.

A MAN ON A MISSION

Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s our pleasure to introduce to you our new General Manager…..Bradley Leahey! Having done an extraordinary job on both the Masters course and the World Classic, among other achievements, Bradley was officially promoted to General Manager in April 2012. So who is Bradley Leahey and what can we look forward to from our new General Manager? Bradley was always into sports as a child. Back in school, he was part of the golf and rugby team, participating in all sorts of tournaments. He first had a taste of the golfing industry at a young age of 16, when he got a job in a golf course set up project. “Even as a teenager, I was fascinated by the beautiful landscape of golf courses, so when I was given a chance to work in one, I remembered being so excited. Looking back, I can still remember how excited I was working on the golf courses for the first time.” At age 20, an opportunity came for him to be an apprentice in golf course management at the Sheraton Resort Klub Rimbia Ivian. There, he discovered that he had the Midas touch when it comes to working the golf course. With a hunger to improve his craft, Bradley went around the world, to famous golf courses designed by renowned golf course designers like Ben Crenshaw (Brad had a stint at Crenshaw’s first golf course outside the USA), Greg Norman, five times British Open champion Peter Thompson, and JNP Designers, among many others. Before we know him as the General Manager of Laguna National, Bradley was already an experienced leader, mentor and a visionary, having been in top management with many big organizations in Japan, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. As a leader, Bradley is a firm believer of the saying “A company is only as strong as her weakest member”. His strong emphasis on training and development of staff skills and knowledge has become his mantra. One need look no further than Laguna Golf Maintenance Department to see this. As the Director of Agronomy, he played a major role in ensuring that all his staff are well trained, and are exposed to the latest knowledge in the industry. “Once, I led a group of my guys to Sentosa, as part of the team preparing for the Barclays Open. We literally work 7 days a week, close to 24
hours a day. Through that experience, my men were given a first hand experience on how much work is needed behind a major tournament. Back in Laguna, they applied what they have learned, imparting their knowledge to fellow colleagues and the team became more efficient and productive”. Besides running his own department here at Laguna, Bradley was also busy improving the overall standard of the Club. Whether it is ensuring the plants and decorations for Club events are done well, or taking the time and effort to build relationships with Members, especially on weekends. Bradley is truly a friendly neighborhood “ang moh”, having worked in Asia, specifically in the South East Asia region for over 19 years. Bradley first got a chance to work in Singapore when he worked for the Banyan Tree Golf Resort more than 17 years ago. The strong family bond, emphasis on filial piety, is one of the main reasons why Bradley chose to lay his roots here in Singapore. “I always feel that a strong family tie is the secret to being successful in life. I guess I am what you will call a family guy”. When he is not out there on the golf course, at the lobby or at events, he is with his family. A loving husband and father to his wife and kids, Bradley spends his free time with them. “A lot of how I work and lead, how I communicate with different people from different culture, I learned them when I am with my family. I am very blessed to have a loving wife, who is a better golfer than me, and 2 adorable children and a career that is not a job for me.” Bradley Leahey is the new General Manager of Laguna National Golf and Country Club. With high service standards and staff development in his crosshair, one can anticipate excitingly the legacy Bradley will be building for years to come.

A TALE OF TWO RELICS
One of my tasks when appointed at the range was to construct a Coaching Lab.
The old room downstairs was chosen, it is close to the members, it is roomy, but it was rundown and leaked like a sieve, whenever it rained it flooded! Repairing it to the standard I wanted was not an easy task‌.. You can see, we have come a long way. The purchase of some equipment and we will have a top of the line analyzing room that will match anyone. Add to that the proposed Academy improvements that are in the pipeline and we hope to be competitive not only in Singapore but Worldwide.
So, now that we have a room that has undergone a huge transformation for the better, it is only fair that the Head Teaching Pro does the same!
putt & play 17 It is not fair if I push fitness and flexibility on you, and I look like Porky Pig after a kid’s birthday party… So I hit the gym, you may also see me wheezing and hissing my way around Bedok Reservoir. But I am getting there. If you see me puffing away in the Lagunitia Gym, just throw candy I will be fine. A nice fit Instructor for a nice tidy instruction room. The sessions include lots of stretches.
Abdominal work, a strong core helps with stability and supports the lower back.
Shoulder workout, prevent rotator cuff injuries. Bicep’s and Triceps, get strong hit far! My goal is to be able to reach the 14th Fairway of the Classic Course from the double black tees.
I am tired of hitting first when I play with the other Pro’s. I have lost 2 inches off my waist, and I am feeling great! I’ll see you at the Range, come and say hello don’t be shy… Allen is a Certified Golf Fitness Trainer, and offers one on one or small group sessions. Before any exercise or after a layoff, always consult a physician.

Pace of Play Rules or Etiquette? In this issue, we look at something that irritates every golfer, at one point or another; the pace of play. in the recent May Medal, some groups took over 5 hours to complete the game. Frustrated Members of the game’s governing body believe that the slow pace of play is something that is affecting all Clubs and becoming a growing problem in Singapore’s golfing scene. Golf Professionals have been blamed for taking too long over every shot, while amateurs are under fire for copying their routines, believing that taking over shots is a answer to success on the course. Soon, golfers around the world will be presented with a revised set of rules as the Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St Andrews, the game’s governing body, will be publishing a revised set of rules, the first update in 20 years. And the new version, to be distributed freely to golfers worldwide, links etiquette with the strict rules of the game for the first time. Golf clubs are recommended to take “disciplinary action” against offenders by banning them temporarily from their home courses or from competitions. Julie Otto, assistant secretary (rules) of the R&A added: “Everyone is affected by slow play which has become a major problem in the modern game. This is the first time that the R&A rule book has been written for the modern golfer and has such a prominent section on etiquette and how to improve the pace of play. If we can increase the speed of play then we can increase the pleasure of the game for everyone.” Professional tournament rounds now routinely exceed five hours and amateur rounds are often nearing the four and a half hour mark. Golf experts said a round used to take less than three hours. Malcolm Campbell, a Fife-based golf author and a member of the R&A, said: “There is no doubt that a round of golf is much slower than it used to be and a lot of it is down to the behaviour of the professionals. People see Tiger
Woods spending ages over his shots and lining up putts from every angle and it creeps into every level of the game and becomes acceptable. A century ago, the professionals would play two rounds in the time it now takes to play one.” In recent years the PGA Tour had unveiled a new penalty scale that gives players only one warning for slow play before game officials assess a one-stroke penalty. In addition to being assessed stroke penalties, players will also be fined. Anyone placed on the clock 10 times during the year will be fined $20,000. Until this year, the tour’s penalty scale allowed for two warnings before players were assessed a one-stroke penalty. Under the new policy: • One bad time during a round is a warning. • Two bad times are a one-stroke penalty and a $5,000 fine. • Three bad times is a two-stroke penalty and a $10,000 fine. • Four bad times means the player is disqualified. Unlike the big tournaments, thousands of ordinary golf clubs are unable to fine slow players. However, St Andrews Links Trust, which runs the famous Old Course and five other courses, has introduced course marshals to encourage players to play faster. The trust has also stamped “3.57” on each practice range ball to get the message across to golf tourists from around the world that this is the time that the Old Course should be played in. Scorecards have average playing times printed alongside every hole. So if you see any of the team here at Laguna around on the course a little more in the future, guess what we are up to? Happy Faster Golfing

Killer Tips For Weight Loss! In order to make the most out of your weight loss program, finding the most effective ways to burn fat will maximize your results and minimize your waistline! Follow these 10 tips for fat burning if you want to lose weight and lead a healthier way of life.
out & about 33 1) Drink More Water One of the best weight loss secrets is to ditch the sodas and stick to water! Experts say you should drink approximately eight glasses of water a day to stay hydrated and healthy. Instead of turning to calorie-laden or sugar-rich drinks, grab a refreshing glass of water. In addition to flushing toxins out of your system, drinking water encourages you to build muscle. 2) Eat More Meals A traditional three-meals-a-day plan just will not cut it if you are in the market to burn fat. Your body is not able to metabolize large meals and will quickly turn any excess into fat. Many experts believe you should eat six small meals a day. Be sure you cut back on your food consumption at each meal, or else you will be doubling your intake and doubling your fat storage! 3) Work Out with Weights One great way to maximize the amount of fat you are burning is to add a weight program to your work out routine. Weight training will not only tone your physique, but will strengthen your body and improve your general health. Lifting weights will also burn calories and fat more quickly than traditional exercising, and it will also boost your metabolism. 4) Choose Protein Choose protein-laden foods for boosting your metabolism and enabling your body to burn fat rapidly. In addition to burning fat, consuming a protein-enriched diet will help you rebuild muscle after work outs and maintain leanness of that muscle. Wisely choose proteins for your diet. Take great care to pick proteins low in fat so you do not consume extra calories. 5) Cut Calories Wisely It may be tempting to drastically cut your calorie intake when starting a healthy lifestyle. Instead, use a step method when cutting your calorie intake to minimize risk. Reducing calories too quickly results in your body rapidly burning all available calories, which will lower your metabolism. Furthermore, you are more likely to maintain your healthy lifestyle through this step method. 6) Reward Yourself When it comes to successfully dieting to burn the most fat, be sure to reward yourself. Everyone has temptations and favorite treats - so allow indulgence. You will be less likely to cheat on your new diet if you grant yourself small rewards. If you are a chocolate lover, treat yourself to a small square of chocolate or single chocolate kiss each evening.
7) Avoid Marathon Workouts The biggest mistake people make when looking to burn fat and lose weight is to have one long, extensive workout session. Instead, break up your workout plan into small chunks throughout the day. Take a brisk walk in the morning, enjoy a work out at lunch, and then exercise more in the evening. In addition to staying active all day long, breaking up your work out will better maintain your metabolism. 8) Mix It Up Choosing to engage in a variety of quality exercises will keep your interest and best allow you to maintain your goal of burning fat. Instead of doing the same exercises each day - mix it up! Opt to swim laps one day, jog another, and bike the next. Rotating your activities will not only allow you to experience a variety of athletics, it will also help you to better tone your body. 9) Skip Happy Hour For those individuals who want to burn fat quickly, avoid alcohol. Rich in sugars and carbohydrates, alcohol is a calorie-rich substance. These empty calories can add up quickly and take away from necessary nutrients that should be included in your daily diet. Furthermore, alcohol acts as an inhibitor for burning fat, allowing your body to store it more quickly. 10) Try a Low GI Diet A low GI diet is an excellent method of burning fat quickly. This diet encourages individuals to consume high amounts of foods with low rankings on the Glycemic Index. These foods are nutritious and will aid your body in burning fats and calories at a quicker pace. This diet includes many of your favorite fruits, vegetable, meats, dairy, and grain products.

Both Captains were stationed at hole 9 (Lady Captain) and hole 18 (Captain) and Members were involved in a putting contest when they visited these 2 holes.

It was a competitive yet recreational event filled with the fierce battles on the greens and delicious snacks such as soya beancurb and noodles at the buggy station. The eventful day ended with a sumptuous dinner at the relaxing and cozy Vineyard, the perfect finale to, according to some Members, the best Captain’s and Lady Captain’s Cup yet!

Le Touessrok The words elegance, chic and spectacular are frequently used to describe Le Touessrok, one of the world’s most picturesque resort destinations. Located on the east coast of Mauritius, 50 minutes from the airport and 50 minutes from the capital Port Louis, the resort is set on a beautiful stretch of white sand coastline overlooking the tranquil Trou d’Eau Douce bay.

As a golf destination, Mauritius is generally off the radar, which is surprising given that it boasts a number of world class courses coupled with crystal clear waters, coral reefs, white sandy beaches and delicious cuisine. However, there is no debate that the breathtaking Le Touessrok is the star of Mauritius. On the mainland are the rooms, suites, pools, restaurants, bars, Givenchy Spa, tennis and the kids club. Across the water lie the two islands of the resort: Ile aux Cerfs, with its spectacular championship golf course designed by Bernhard Langer, and Ilot MangĂŠnie, an island retreat exclusive to guests, both a short ride away by a private boat. Le Touessrok offers a range of ultra-luxurious accommodation spread out over the resort which includes a 24-hour personalized butler service. On the mainland are the Hibiscus and Coral Wings, and Frangipani Island that also offers accommodations. The Hibiscus Wing consists of deluxe rooms, junior suites, the royal suite, and new villas. The Coral Wing has deluxe rooms and a junior suite, and on the private Frangipani Island, there are junior suites and ocean suites. An extensive programme of complimentary water sports coupled with the Givenchy Spa make this a magical place of fun and relaxation. The spa offers a wide range of body treatments, facials, massages, body wraps and a state-of the-art fitness centre. You will love the body scrub which is exclusive to Givenchy. The world famous Givenchy products have been carefully adapted to Spas and are available at Le Touessrok.

Set on Ile Aux Cerfs island, and accessible only by a short boat ride from Le Touessrok Hotel, the Bernhard Langer design golf course offers an experience you will never forget. Opened in November 2003, the course is tough yet spectacular and has many holes boasting views of the turquoise blue waters of the Indian Ocean. The Langer masterpiece designed with sensitivity to the land, makes its way around the tropical, volcanic rock island and uses all of the natural features to great effect, making the course a real test of accuracy. “The course has won many awards and is regularly rated as one of the world’s great golf destinations” said Russell Hannah, General Manager of the golf course. “Le Touessrok is demanding off the tee because of the mangroves, trees and water features, but they add an element of beauty that is hard to find. The paspalum greens are fast and the complexes small, it is not a tricky layout, but requires precision”. The final three holes provide a fitting climax to this exhilarating course. The par 4 dog leg 16th hole at 337 metres offers a
demanding tee shot over a large mangrove swamp, setting up a short approach to a stunning small green protected by volcanic rock. The penultimate hole is another cleverly designed par 4 that requires your tee shot to carry mangroves and avoid the fairway bunkers, setting up the approach to a small, narrow putting surface. The final hole is a real gem of a par 4. The tee shot must carry mangroves and avoid two well positioned fairway bunkers to allow you to attack the green in two. This is where it gets interesting, as the approach shot has to carry another forest of mangroves in order to reach the three tiered green in regulation. At 382 metres, it’s a daunting finish and great hole to finish off the round. A small, but comfortable clubhouse offers an irrestible place to relax and enjoy the breathtaking scenery. The golf course is quiet and accessible and green fees are complimentary for guests of Le Touessrok. Almost nothing in life is perfect, nevertheless a round of golf at Le Touessrok is about as good as it gets.

James (Pebble Beach) and Judge (S&R)
Here is a pat on the back for Chellapapandian Rajkamal from T2, who found a Member’s wallet on the buggy track along the golf course, passed it to GM Bradley Leahey, and the wallet was returned to it’s rightful owner. The wallet contained $250 and many credit cards. The relieved Member complimented Chellapapandian for his integrity and rewarded him as well.
“Yesterday we had our son’s 2nd birthday by the pool, and had a wonderfulafternoon. I would just like to mention a big thank you to James, fromPebble Beach Cafe who was exceptional! He helped manage our party set-upand food arrangements and had very helpful suggestions. My husband and I were very pleased with all the help we receive from staff, including the Laguna concierge (Judge) who helped take babies in prams down the many stairs to the pool area for the party”. - Michelle Ledingham
