Spring Summer Trends 2013 As we approach the last quarter of the year, let us take a look at the exciting fashion trends of 2012. This year is most definitely a year of colours - with colour clashing and the prominence of neon colours, seen by the works of all major designers taking centre stage throughout the year. So what trends can one expect to see in 2013? Will 2013 be a year of pop colours as well? The roaring 1920s seems to be making a comeback, most notably with Ralph Lauren’s Spring 2013 runway show. Designs from Gucci, Marc Jacobs and Etro also feature the unique 1920s style of fringe, drop-waist flapper dresses, sequins, chiffon, feathers, beading, silk, and shell tops. Soft colours with romantic floral prints are also often featured in this style. With the influence of the 2012 Summer Olympics, the sporty look will also be in trend. Be prepared to see the likes of wedge sneakers, mesh tank tops, nylon anoraks, rugby tees, relaxed knits, neoprene garments and colour block dresses as the key items in Spring 2013. Designs from Marc by Marc Jacobs and Isabel Marant illustrate the significance and influence of neon, metallics and bright colour blocking, which also emphasize on the importance of comfort while being trendy. Sporty prints such as stripes and apparels such as leggings, will also be a common sight next year.
Another trend to look out for would be the Tropical Island look. As seen from the designs of Ferragamo, Missoni and Alberta Ferretti, the common looks include nature-inspired prints like leaves, animal skins, tie dye, and feathers. A print-heavy theme, channeling the “sarong silhouette” will be the key in achieving the African, Birds-of-Paradise look. Compliment your outfit with beads and linen accessories and you are all set for a wild night. From the look of things, we will kickstart 2013 with a galore of prints and vibrant colours. With these interesting styles to look forward to and many more not talked about in this article (can anyone smell the return of the bohemian spirit?), we can all be excited in December as the big crystal ball drops at Time Square in New York, one of the major fashion capitals of the world, ushering all of us into the glamourous and exciting year of 2013.

UPGRADING WORKS HAVE STARTED AT THE MASTERS COURSE Puvanaendran A.T Golf Course Superintendent
With the Masters Course coming close to 20–years old, our golf course maintenance team had started upgrading works at the Masters Course in July, 2012 and this will be ongoing for the long term future for our members to still enjoy this magnificent golf course. From the feedback from our Members and also, from the safety standpoint from the members, we did take into account the balls that were landing on the 9th Blue Tee-box that was hit from the 8th Tee-box at the Masters Course, therefore the whole back drop of Hole: 8 and Hole: 9 Tee-box complex was re-designed & was transformed and now has a new look.
putt & play 11 The Tees at Hole: 9 of the Masters Course were totally reshaped with some elevations added on to the Blue Tee. The whole Tee-box complex was planted with the Paspalum platinum grass like we have at the World Classic Course. Concrete walk paths were installed for the convenience of our golfing members. It took the in-house talent of T2 construction team about a month to complete this Tee project. The turf was grown in within 1 (one) - month and opened for play on 1st June 2012.
A high mound was created and planted with tall Macarthuri ptychosperma palm trees to prevent golf balls from Hole: 8 of the Masters Course, which is a Par 3, getting onto the Hole: 9 Tees complex area. Via carrying out these works, this will help protect the tee-box area & most of all our members from oncoming balls especially with the bunkers that were inserted into the new mound at hole: 8 to assist to have the players to play to the green instead of laying up in the large space that was a free landing area previously with no bunkers to be penalized when hitting into them like today’s new layout.
At Hole: 8, T2 construction team had closed up a Bunker next to the rear of the Green since it was too small for play. T2 then re-shaped the whole backdrop of Hole: 8 and added 3 (Three) x new Pot Bunkers. With these 3 x (Three) new Pot Bunkers added the new white silica sand obtained from Ipoh Malaysia gave this Par: 3 Hole whole new fresh look which has enhance this hole. Currently our T2 construction team has started works on Hole: 3 of the Masters Course with the surrounds of the green of this great Par: 3. The reason for this is that during the wet periods, our members have expressed their concerns about being unable to find the balls in these areas. The reason these works is that over the years of turf growing (20 – years), the turf does produce a dead organic layer which we now as THATCH. This thatch layer holds water & does not allow the water to drain & becomes very soggy. As you can see via the soil profile, the thatch layer is over 6” (inches) long & normally a Golf Course Superintendent like to have a thatch layer of just 1 ½ “ (inches) which assist to the turf & soil profile growing conditions due the micro’s that are aloud to breed & breakdown fertilizers e.t.c. We do look forward to sharing the results with you of hole: 3 when completed together with the future holes at the Masters Course Upgrading Works. Yeo Guan Kai Captain
Fore!ever Friends “The friends you make on the golf course, you make for life.” Jessica Anderson Valentine, six-time Scottish Ladies Champion during 1930-50 Golf is arguably the friendliest sport or the sport for friendship. We just had the London Olympics and the major sports were all on the world stage. Did you realize that most sports have to do with beating your opponent, some literally? You have to compete against your opponent, tackle your competitor or score against him or her and win at his/her expense.
planning around the tee time and postgame food and drinks, and celebrating a good round or lamenting a missed birdie putt; and exchanging wagers. It is amazing how you develop deep friendships with your regular flight mates. More incredible is how you develop newfound and long-term friendships. In fact, many of us do not just have a regular foursome but different groups you play with. I started golf when my then colleagues urged me to, and I followed them to Batam and Johor to golf early Saturday mornings; not to mention long lunches and shopping detours (for the wives, we reasoned). When I was at Accenture, my colleagues and I played Saturdays at NSRCC and then joined Laguna National together. The stroking and wager banter starts well before, and continues way after!
While golf is also competitive and making its debut at the Rio Olympics in 2016, it is one of the few sports where you compete on your own merit; it is you performing against the golf course. It probably explains why golf is such a cordial game.
When I was nominated into our Club’s golf committee, I switched to Saturday afternoons to meet more members, and joined what we fondly call the 1307 group. 1307 is the tee time which our dear Freddy Moh had to queue up for. The banter intensifies, along with the brotherhood.
Golf is about playing alongside your three other flight mates for at least four hours. It is also about the pre-game

We see each other regularly at Singapore Golf Association (SGA) sub-committee meetings and the SGA President Bob Tan suggested the captains have quarterly games to promote camaraderie and use the informal platform to discuss national and matters of common interests to the clubs. Since then it has forged very close relationships between the club captains and much collaboration happens behind the scenes. Even the captains who recently retired from their tenures remained in this informal group; which has grown beyond the baker’s dozen. Think back on how you met your best friends: schoolmates, army buddies, colleagues or friends’ friends; and golf! I dare say your best friends are golfers. We do not really think about it but it is uncanny how golf can bring strangers together and build strong and lasting relationships. I postulate that it has to do with the nature of the game. Firstly, golf is a very addictive sport and it is seldom played alone. Secondly, it takes the one of the longest time to play: four to five hours amongst four players. As you play hole by hole, sometimes you wait for your turn to play, you have plenty of opportunities to chat and become close to one another. It is a game where you help one another: for example compare distances, wind conditions, putting lines or helping to spot each other’s ball flight and landing. Golf’s etiquette further promotes social skills. This golf decorum helps create good first impressions and the common interests in golf promote the fellowship which often perpetuate beyond the one game. Many people associate golf with doing business. The truth of the matter is that I have never closed a business deal on the golf course. But golf is a good way to develop relationships with your clients. And understand your client’s personality and vice versa.
Golfers are united in amusing ways. Several years ago, I was invited by a fellow member Tony Quah to a memorial event for his late father. And yes, golf was used a platform for this and I have now gotten to know the Quah family – including our Singapore soccer legends like Kim Lye and Kim Song - and their close friends. By the time you read this, this year’s SGA Inter Club League matches would have been completed. In this match play format, we play 12 matches at various club courses in Singapore over six months. While it remains very competitive, the League has given our team players from our respective fraternities to come together to wear the Club’s colours. Beyond our team, we also have the opportunity to know our competitors; players from other clubs. The sponsored beers after the matches – won or lost – helped us develop fresh acquaintances. We just hosted our affiliate club, Alpine from Bangkok. While it was a serious Inter-Port match based on four ball better ball match play, friendship was in the air with competing players sharing how to play the World Classic and reading lines. Even the heaven above decided to close our course and force a friendly draw for the match. I conclude with my own quote, “Go forth and golf, and make fore!ever friends.” May golf and everlasting friendships prevail! PS. On this cordial note, you may recall one my past articles titled, “Sorry seems to be the hardest word.” Since that story, we have not had to convene our Disciplinary Committee (DC). Bravo! Laguna National. Please continue to be patient and polite with our friends.

Justin Han (PGA Professional)
New Pro Introduction We have a new addition to our Coaching staff at Laguna National and I am very pleased to introduce him - Justin Han.
by Dr Rob Neil, who is a renowned biomechanics expert who works with several players on the PGA Tour in America, to enhance his golfing knowledge and coaching ability.
Before joining the Professional ranks, Justin enjoyed a successful amateur career, winning junior and amateur events in Singapore and New Zealand as well as a professional event in Singapore in 2008.
Justin’s teaching methods are simple yet insightful to help his clients understand the causes and effects of their golf swing. Not only is he known for his long game teaching ability, Justin has been one of most sought after professionals for short game lessons in the country. He is also known as a short game wizard by his peers, given his ability to execute and explain a variety of shots under various circumstances.
He was a Singapore National team member from 2001 to 2008 and a North Harbour team member (New Zealand Interprovincial State Team) during his 2-year stint in New Zealand. He has competed in several top level amateur events such as the Putra Cup (2002, 2003, 2004) and the Asian Games (2006), including events in Australia and New Zealand (2004-2006) where he impressed the Club and State team selectors. Besides competing at a high level, Justin has been an avid student of the game. He has spent much of his time working with tour coach and short game guru, Kel Lewellyn, and Alan Murray, who is the founder and life member of the Singapore PGA. Justin has also attended coaching seminars by Australian teacher-of-the-year, David Milne, and a biomechanics course
Justin currently has students of all playing abilities, from absolute beginners to a touring professional on the Asian Ladies Tour. He is also an integral part of varsity golf in Singapore, coaching and organising tournaments for the Singapore Management University and National University of Singapore golf programs. I hope you will join me in welcoming Justin to Laguna National and we wish him every success in his role. He can be contacted at 8123 3274. Happy Golfing! Stay Connected to dial in those wedges
Though of short distances, wedge shots prove to be the most challenging at times, especially when faced with an awkward distance or lie. Staying connected will help you to achieve a consistent impact to dial in those wedges. To stay connected, place a towel under both arms as illustrated below.
Swing to the top, maintaining the pressure between your arms and body, keeping the towel under your arms. Turn to the finish with your chest facing the target, weight on your left and most importantly, with the towel under your arms, ensuring that you have stayed connected from impact through to the finish.
The towel drill would help to keep wrist hinge and rotation to a minimum, increasing the dependency on our body turn to control the clubface from start to the finish. This would result in straighter and more consistent struck wedge shots.

AGE IS BUT A NUMBER There is an old Chinese saying “Manage your health, family and career well, and you can conquer the world”. While not exactly in that order, Laguna longtime Member Mr Cheong personifies that ancient saying. A Member since 1992, Mr. Cheong belongs to the second batch of Members at the then very young Laguna National Golf and Country Club. A self made man who built his fortune in the optical manufacturing industry, Mr. Cheong was one of the most prominent entrepreneurs back in the 1980s. Now at 70 years old, Mr. Cheong has since retired and having spent most of his younger days carving a career, now focuses on pursuing his other passions like fishing and mahjong, and in recent months, fitness. “I spent most of my week at the Club’s gym, working out with my trainer. I like the ‘feel good” feeling I get after a vigorous exercise session. Of course, the compliments I get from my family and friends, about how in shape I am at my age, doesn’t hurt too.” Besides the usual weights lifting and treadmill running, Mr. Cheong is also an active participant in the Laguna Boxing Programme; even showcasing some of his jabs and hooks at the Member Social Night earlier this year.
“Other than gym, I enjoy cycling as well. I guess cycling has always been a big part of my life. One day, I would love to join a group of like minded cycling kakis and cycle all the way to KL.” Mr. Cheong is a cycling enthusiast. Even as a young man, Mr Cheong would cycle from Petailing Jaya to Odeon Cinema in Kuala Lumpur. His love for cycling can be seen till today, as he cycles to the Club as often as three times a week, a feat that is impressive for any man. A true blue Lagunian, Mr Cheong is a perfect example of a man that lives life to the fullest. An ideal role model for the younger generation, he is the perfect example of a man that has “manage his health, family and career well, and conquered the world”.

HARNESS THE POWER OF MEDITATION
In a research conducted by Psychosomatic Medicine, a randomised group of 90 cancer patients were taught mindful meditation. After seven weeks, those who had participated in the mindful meditation reported that they were significantly less depressed, anxious, angry and confused than the control group, who did not engage in meditation. The meditators also had more energy and fewer heart and gastrointestinal problems than the control group. Not only does meditation help us better manage our negative emotions, it also helps us to relate to one another in a more positive and compassionate way. We gain the ability to see things from another perspective and possess the clarity to make better decisions and solve problems that otherwise seem unsolvable, with an open mind. All of this contribute to our own personal success and the success of others. An article in the Financial Times, ‘The Mind Business’ , reported that William George, a Goldman Sachs board member, is an advocate of meditation and brought the benefits of this practice to the corporate world. He says, “The main business case for meditation is that if you are fully present on the job, you will be more effective as a leader, you will make better decisions and you will work better with other people…..I tend to lead a very busy life. This keeps me focused on what’s important.” By making meditation a daily practice, we gain joy, self-

awareness and self- mastery, all of which can bring about a positive transformative change. What is meditation? In modern day, there is much confusion about this ancient practice. There are popular beliefs that meditation is listening to relaxing music to calm the body and mind, while others think that it is a passive practice and sleep when they meditate. In truth, all these things do happen during our initial trials into this practice. Because meditation is easy to learn but difficult to practice, those who have tried, have tried various methods to help them with the concentration, resulting in a wide mix of experiences from individual to individual. To be in a meditative state, our mind must focus on a single neutral or virtuous object. It requires our mind to be highly alert and to concentrate on the object eliminating all distracting and trivial thoughts. In this state of mind, we are completely relaxed and will then be able to experience pure joy. The feeling is akin to eating ice cream for the first time when you were a child. It is charmingly sweet, delicately refreshing, and just a mere drop of this essence is enough to help us deal with the challenges and stress we face in our daily life. When we are able to concentrate on a neutral object such as our breath, we will instantly gain relaxation and rapture of being in the present moment, creating joy within ourselves. The beginning of most meditation starts with the breathing
out & about 29 because it signifies that we are alive. Where do you think you will be if you were not breathing? This reminds us that we must learn to appreciate the simple action of breathing as it brings oxygen to all parts of our body. Joy is a state of mind and does not only belong to the domain of monks, yogis or those living in Bhutan. Tan Chade-Meng, pioneer of Google’s Search Inside Yourself program says, “There is no religion associated with bringing attention to the breath; anyone can learn this”. It’s free and we can practice it anywhere such as in the office by taking a 5-minute break from our work, or while we are travelling by public transport. We can make idle time more productive by practicing while we are impatiently waiting in traffic, or just before we are about to explode with anger at someone for stepping on our toes or making us upset. With this ability to go deep inside ourselves, we also become aware of every thought that passes through our mind, and we start to gain selfawareness. We begin to know why we are having a bad day, when we are feeling stress, or what is making us feel down. Most importantly, we know how to eliminate all these negative emotions and bad habits that stop us from achieving success. There are many methods to counter our negative emotions, but we need to first recognise how and in what form they exist in our mind. Do we know how anger looks like? Do we recognise it when it arises within us? Are we able to stop it from arising? Through consistent practice, we can do all three just like how we automatically know how to drink water. It will be a habit cemented deep into our subconscious mind. Once we can gain control over our emotions by practicing meditation methods, we can choose how we feel towards any external circumstances that arises. Through constant and continuous practice, we gain selfmastery and generate transformative change. We are no longer slaves to our negative emotions and will not allow the negative aggressions of the outer world determine how we feel. Now, this is what I call authentic power.
How to get started 1. Develop the motivation to learn meditation by thinking about how it can improve your life, your work performance and relationships with people 2. Learn and apply the meditation methods by learning from an experienced meditator 3. Practice, Practice, Practice. Practice at home and any chance you may have 4. Gain relaxation and joy 5. TOTAL RESISTANCE EXERCISE (TRX) PERSONAL TRAINING PROGRAMME What is TRX Resistance Exercise?
• Born in the US Navy SEALS and developed by Fitness anywhere, it is a revolutionary method of leveraged body weight exercise. Safely perform hundreds of exercise that builds power, strength, flexibility, balance, mobility and your core at the same time.
Benefits of TRX
• TRX helps acquire lean muscle. The advantage of lean muscle is that it burns calories, uses up body fat and speeds up metabolism. • TRX allows you to build tremendous strength and power. • TRX training definitely targets your body core muscles. Many people consider this as one of its major advantages. In addition, this type of training will also strengthen the stabiliser muscles.
TRX for Weight Loss
• Distinct from weight training where different parts of the body are trained in isolation, the TRX trains the body as one unit. A major benefit of resistance training is your body burns calories at a much higher rate for up to 48 hours. Unlike regular fitness classes where the abdominal work is generally left until the end of the sessions, in contrast the TRX ensures that you are constantly training your abdominal muscle for the entire workout. • The TRX system is essential for those who focus on golf specific functional fitness stability training and core development.

A FOREIGN AFFAIR Laguna National hosted friends from the Alpine Golf Club, Thailand on 18 August 2012 at the majestic World Classic. This is the first time Members from one of the most exciting Club in Thailand visited the challenging golf course.
The day started with a game of golf at the World Classic, where Members from Alpines were pitted against Laguna Members, including Lady Captain Dr Janice Khoo, Laguna National General Manager Bradley Leahey and Laguna Golf Manager Chua Leng Heok. After testing the challenges of the World Classic, it was time to treat the Alpine Guests to a delicious dinner, the way only our good Laguna chefs know how. The highlight of the night was the presentation of the exchange of token between each Club, with Laguna receiving a beautiful Elephant statue from our generous friends from the land of a thousand smiles. A wonderful day indeed, one where our Thai friends got the opportunity to experience the Laguna hospitality. Members from both Clubs got a chance to exchange golf pointers, and in the process, got to know each other better. The day may be over, but the bonds build toay will last for years to come.

A NIGHT OF GREAT HERITAGE With the lease of the Club now extended to 2040, Laguna National hosted the Heritage Members and introduced the “Friends of Heritage” programme at the Heritage Members Cocktail Reception on 28 July 2012. Under the “Friends of Heritage” programme, Heritage Members get to sponsor Members friends who have missed out on the initial Heritage Membership Programme. With exciting incentives for introducing Members to the Friends programme, this was a golden opportunity for Heritage Members to get their kakis to join.
Kim Gwang Lae and Hong Jung Taeg
Members were treated to a wide variety of popular local and international cuisine; roasted pork rice, Japanese sashimi and fresh oysters. Members also met up with the Laguna Management team and got to learn more about the exciting plans the Club has in the near future. A night worthy of the Laguna Heritage indeed.

Sweet Treats Under a moon lit sky This year, we celebrated Mid-Autumn Festival at everyone’s favorite Lakes Cafe. Members got a chance to taste the delicious mooncakes freshly baked by our Pine Valley Chef, under the cool moonlit sky, with a live Chinese music ensemble performing in the background. The little ones had a blast taking a cool refreshing walk around the Club and even had a chance to visit the Worls Classic, with their colorful lanterns in toll. LAGUNA NATIONAL CHARITY CLASSIC 2012
SUPPORT OF THE STRAITS TIMES SCHOOL POCKET MONEY FUND Laguna National Golf and Country Club gave back at the recent Laguna National Charity Classic in support of The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund, held on 28 July 2012. Graced by Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, the full day event of golf, dinner and a charity auction saw the Club raised a whopping $400,000 for the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund, the highest amount ever raised in a single event for the charity. The day started out early in the morning with both the Masters Course and World Classic packed with generous golfers (donors) who were here to tee off to a good cause. Some Members even got to catch a glimpse of ESM Goh’s golf skills as he shared the course with fellow golfers.
After an exciting day of golf, Members and Guests were treated to a night of great festivities, with song performances from Laguna Members and a successful auction. Hosted by Laguna Committee Member Allan Muir, luxury items like an autographed Tiger Woods framed photo and 2 bottles of Louis the XIIIV were auctioned off to the highest bidder, the Tiger Woods picture going for an astounding $58,000 alone. The Laguna National Charity Classic was one of the most fundraising event for the ST School Pocket Money Fund. The success of the fundraiser was the result of an amalgamation of hard work from the organizing committee helmed by Mr Chan Chong Beng, Laguna’s Chairman Mr Peter Kwee, the Club’s Management and staff, and the generous giving from the Members and Guests.
