UNOFFICIAL TOURISM: PALMA Wir alle wissen, welche Fragmente unserer Stadt Teil unserer persönlichen Geschichte sind: Die Bar, in der wir jeden Morgen frühstücken, der Stadtteil, durch den wir gerne schlendern...So zeichnen wir alle unsere persönlichen Stadtpläne, mentale Karten der Stadt, in der wir leben. Stadtpläne, die außerhalb der ätherischen Welt unserer Gedanken unsichtbar sind, da sie nie auf Papier festgehalten werden. Die künstlerische Arbeit erlaubt uns, Ideen in Taten, Handlungen und Kartografien umzusetzen. Die künstlerische Arbeit lebt von Ideen, aber ohne Handlungen gibt es keine Kunst. Die Absicht von “Unofficial Tourism”* ist, die Ideen, die bestimmte Bürger dieser Stadt von Palma haben, Realität werden zu lassen. Wir wollen, dass diese Ideen auf einem gedruckten Plan und in einem Führer stehen, sich zeigen und gleichzeitig weitere Handlungen erzeugen: die Spaziergänge der Bürger, die diesen Plänen und Führern folgen. Andernteils sprechen wir oft von der speziellen Bedeutung der künstlerischen Arbeit in der Öffentlichkeit. Aber wenn wir von der Notwendigkeit dieser Arbeiten sprechen, wollen wir damit nicht nur sagen, dass diese direkt auf der Straße ausgeführt werden müssen, sondern dass es auch der direkten Mitwirkung der Spieler auf öffentlicher Ebene bedarf. In diesem Sinne wirken bei “Unofficial tourism” verschiedene Kulturvermittler mit, die eine Verbindung zur Stadt Palma haben. Sie haben eine Reihe von Routen ausgearbeitet, die das kulturelle Erbe von Palma auf verschiedene Weisen interpretieren. Jede Route ist daher ein kultureller Kommentar, der eine andere Sichtweise anbieten will als die, die öffentliche Gewalt dem Bürger vorgeben will. Deshalb ist es notwendig, dass von Bürgerseite noch weitere Erzählungen über die Gemeinde in Umlauf gebracht werden. Erzählungen, die frei von jeglichem institutionellen Interesse sind. Die Städte sind Erbe eines jeden und müssen aus soviel Perspektiven wie möglich beschrieben werden. Das Kulturerbe -sei es materiell oder immateriell- einer Gemeinde ist das Erbe aller Mitglieder dieser Gemeinschaft und nicht ihrer Institutionen. Diese beschäftigen sich nur mit ihrer Verwaltung und nicht mit ihrer Schaffung. Und so ist es: die Kultur, der Reichtum unddie Kunst einer Gemeinschaft sind das Erbe dieser Gemeinschaft. Und nicht das Erbe einiger weniger. *Aus Anlass der Zweihundertjahrfeier der Verfassung von Cádiz, bekannt als “La Pepa”, führt Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) das Projekt 1812-2012 durch. Ein zeitgenössischer Blick. Ein Angebotsensemble aus verschiedenen Bereichen wie Kunst, Illustration, zeitgenössischer und populärer Musik oder Audiovision, das in verschiedenen spanischen Städten von Anfang Dezember 2011 bis März 2012 stattfindet. Der Kommissar des Projekts, Jorge Diez, sieht das Projekt als kritischen Blick der Kunst auf die Konzepte Bürgertum, politische Freiheiten und Beteiligung im Kontext der arabischen Revolutionen oder der 15-M-Bewegung in Spanien. “Unofficial tourism: Palma” ist eine Arbeit von Iñaki Larrimbe, die im Rahmen dieses Projekts im Museum Es Baluard in Palma gezeigt wird.

UNOFFICIAL TOURISM: PALMA We all know which fragments of our city form part of our personal heritage: that bar where we have breakfast every day, that corner of the city where we like to take a wander… And so we draw our own maps, mental maps of the city we live in. Maps that leave no trace outside of the ethereal world of our thoughts, as they’re never put onto paper and made real. But artists’ work allows ideas to become actions, become events, become maps. An artist’s work feeds on ideas, but without events there can be no art. Thus “Unofficial tourism” * seeks to make the ideas of certain citizens about Palma become reality. To put these ideas onto a printed map and into a guidebook, making them tangible and in turn generating further events: the wanderings of the citizens that use these maps and guidebooks. At the same time, we often speak of the special interest in artists’ work that can be found in public spaces. But when we defend the need for this work, we not only mean that it’s important it’s carried out on the street, but also that it’s essential for it to seek the direct participation of ordinary people acting as agents. With this in mind, a range of cultural agents who have links to the city of Palma are collaborating in “Unofficial tourism”. They’ve drawn up a set of routes that look at Palma’s cultural heritage from different angles. Each tour, then, is a cultural commentary that attempts to offer an alternative vision to that perpetrated by public bodies’ official discourse. We need the citizens themselves to put more stories about communities into circulation. Stories that aren’t intoxicated with any hint of institutional interest. Cities are everybody’s inheritance, so they should be narrated from as many perspectives as possible. Because the cultural heritage – whether material or not – of a community is the heirloom of every member of that community, not its institutions. The institutions are only focused on how they’re managed, not on production. And there you have it: the culture, the riches, the art of a community is that community’s heritage. It doesn’t just belong to a few members. *To celebrate the bicentennial of the Constitución de Cádiz, popularly known as ‘La Pepa’, Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) has drawn up a project called 1812-2012: A contemporary vision. A series of offerings in different formats and spheres - art, illustration, contemporary and popular music and audiovisual work to be showcased in different Spanish cities from early December until March 2012. The project’s commissioner, Jorge Díez, has defined it as using contemporary artistic techniques to cast a critical glance at the concepts of de citizenship, political freedom and participation, in the context of the Arab uprisings and the 15-M movement in Spain. “Unofficial tourism: Palma” is the brainchild of Iñaki Larrimbe, programmed at Palma’s Es Baluard Museum within the framework of this project.

Und auch der Aufenthaltsort vieler Schauspieler und Regisseure, die Filmgeschichte geschrieben haben. Michael Douglas, Orson Welles, Anthony Quinn, Ava Gardner, Johnny Weissmüller, Peter Ustinov… die Liste könnnte bis ins Unendliche fortgeführt werden. Alle haben aus verschiedenen Motiven eine Zeit auf der Insel verbracht und sind auf immer und ewig mit ihr verbunden. Erst Ende 2011 drehten die Brüder Wachowski, Autoren der Matrix-Trilogie, ihren neuen Film “Der Wolkenatlas” mit Tom Hanks und Halle Berry auf Mallorca. Der Schauspieler Harvey Keitel bereitet gerade zusammen mit seiner Ehefrau Daphna Kastner als Regisseurin und Drehbuchautorin seinen nächsten Spielfilm “Holidays in Mallorca” vor.

PALMA IN THE SPOTLIGHT By Pedro Barbadillo The elegant Renaissance palaces in the centre of Palma and the streets of the El Call Jewish quarter, the dramatic cliffs on the North Coast of the island, the almond groves inland, the peaks of the Sierra de Tramuntana… Mallorca has always provided an exceptional location for filming movies. It’s also the holiday destination of choice for many actors and directors who’ve made history. Michael Douglas, Orson Welles, Anthony Quinn, Ava Gardner, Johnny Weissmüller, Peter Ustinov… the list goes on and on. All of them spent some time on the island, for business or pleasure, and all of them found themselves hooked. The latest in the long line are the Wachowskis, creators of the “Matrix” trilogy, who in late 2011 shot their new film “Cloud Atlas”, with Tom Hanks and Halle Berry. And New Yorker Harvey Keitel, who’s preparing for his new role in “Holiday in Mallorca”, scripted and directed by his wife Daphna Kastner.

In “Blackjack” (1949), the first Spanish-American coproduction and one of Lola Flores’s earliest films, George Sanders plays Captain Mike, a smuggler aboard the ship Blackjack. One day he rescues a group of political asylum-seekers who have survived a shipwreck, and whose numbers include the young Ingrid. He takes them to Palma, and the story of a love destined to failure is played out on the streets and under the windmills of Es Jonquet, the old fishermen’s barrio.

In “Der schwarze Jack” (1949), der ersten spanisch-nordamerikanischen Koproduktion, spielt George Sanders Kapitän Mike, einen Schmuggler am Steuer des Bootes “Schwarzer Jack”. In einer Szene rettet er eine Gruppe politischer Flüchtlinge, Überlebende eines Schiffbruchs und bringt diese nach Palma, unter ihnen ist die junge Ingrid. In den Straßen und unter den Mühlen von Es Jonquet, dem ehemaligen Matrosen-Viertel, bahnt sich die Geschichte einer unmöglichen Liebe an, in der eine blutjunge Lola Flores zu sehen ist.

Errol Flynn liebte das Meer und verließ 1952 sein Haus in Hollywood, um an Bord seiner Jacht Zaca den Ozean zu überqueren. Ein Unwetter brachte ihn an die Steilküsten im Norden der Insel und er wurde von dieser Küste dermaßen verzaubert, dass er beschloss, den Hafen von Palma zu seinem Ausgangspunkt zu machen. Der Schauspieler, der Robin Hood unsterblich machte, lebte mit seiner Frau und seinen zwei Kindern an Bord seiner Jacht und man konnte ihn häufig barfuss durch die Bars von Moll Vell oder dem Paseo del Born streifen sehen.

Errol Flynn loved the sea, and left his home in Hollywood in 1952 to sail across the ocean on his yacht Zaca. A storm swept him toward the cliffs to the north of Mallorca, and this coastline so fascinated him that he set up his base in the port at Palma. The actor who immortalized Robin Hood lived on board with his wife and two children, and could often be seen walking barefoot around the bars in Moll Vell and Paseo del Born.

Orson Welles’ hatte ein Faible für Stierkämpfe und er folgte seinen bevorzugten Toreros von Arena zu Arena. Im Coliseo Balear, der Stierkampfarena von Palma, verfolgte er bei verschiedenen Gelegenheiten die Stierkämpfe seiner Freunde. Eine Fotografie aus dem Jahre 1973 zeigt ihn Zigarre rauchend auf einem Logenplatz zusammen mit seinem Freund, dem Torero Andrés Vázquez. Dem Autor von “Citizen Kane” wurde im Palmesaner Stadtteil Es Rafal ein Platz mit seinem Namen gewidmet.

Orson Welles’s fondness for bullfighting led him from bullring to bullring following his favourite matadores. At Palma’s bullring, the Coliseo Balear, he attended friends’ bullfights on several occasions. A photograph from 1973 shows him in up in the gallery, smoking a cigar alongside his friend the matador Andrés Vázquez. The creator of “Citizen Kane” has a square named after him in the Es Rafal neighbourhood.

“Flor de espino” aus dem Jahre 1925 ist der erste Film eines mallorquinischen Regisseurs. Er entstand aus der Laune eines jungen palmesaner Adeligen, Jaume Ferrer, heraus, der, um in Nähe seiner Geliebten sein zu können, einen Film erfand, in dem sie die Hauptrolle spielte. Unter den Häusern und Palästen, in denen der Film gedreht wurde, verdienen die Treppen des Vivot-Palasts neben der Kirche Santa Eulalia besondere Aufmerksamkeit.

“Flor de espino”, from 1925, was the first movie filmed by a Mallorcan director. It was the indulgence of a young Palma aristocrat, Jaume Ferrer, who decided to dream up a film where his loved one played the leading role so that he could be close to her. Among the houses and palaces where the story unfolds, one key reference is the steps of the renaissance style Vivot palace, by the church of Santa Eulalia.

Der Film “Bahía de Palma” von 1962 geht sicherlich nicht in die Filmgeschichte ein, war jedoch einer der größten Erfolge seiner Zeit. Der Grund dafür: Elke Sommer zeigt darin den ersten Bikini der spanischen Filmgeschichte. Die sonst so strenge Zensur von General Franco sah in den spärlich bekleideten Körpern eine vorzügliche Werbung für den in seinen Anfängen befindlichen Tourismus, der die Hotels der Playa de Palma füllte.

The 1962 film “Bahía de Palma” may not go down in the history books of Cinema, but it was a hit at the time. And the reason was that Elke Sommer wore the first bikini in the history of Spanish cinema. General Franco’s censors, known for their strictness in other areas, saw scantily clad bodies as a boost for the growing tourist industry that filled the hotels along the beach at Palma.

Starring Fernando Rey and Ángela Molina, and featuring the spectacular gardens of the “Raixa” estate, the film depicted a decadent aristocracy reluctant to renounce its privileges.

Hipódromo de Son Pardo Der französische Schauspieler Guillaume Canet spielt den mythischen Reiter Pierre Durand, der darauf beharrte, mit einem kleinen Pferd ohne besondere Qualitäten eine Olympiamedaille zu gewinnen. “Jappeloup”, der Name des Pferdes, das dem Film den Titel verlieh, war in Los Angeles ein Flop, gewann aber die Goldmedaille bei den Olympischen Spielen von Seoul im Jahre 1988. Son Pardo, Sitz des mallorquinischen Trabrennvereins, bot den Schauplatz für den Film.

Son Pardo Racecourse French actor Guillaume Canet plays the legendary jockey Pierre Durand, determined to convert a short, unremarkable horse into an Olympic champion. “Jappeloup”, the horse that gave the film its name, failed in Los Angeles, but won the gold in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. The movie was shot at Son Pardo, headquarters of Mallorca’s horse riding club for caballos de trote.

Man sah sie so manchen Nachmittag auf der Terrasse der Bar Bosch auf dem Paseo del Borne ins Gespräch vertieft. Der Dichter Robert Graves war bereits über 60, als ihn die bezaubernde Ava Gardner im Jahre 1955 zum ersten Mal besuchte. Der Autor von “Ich, Claudius” und “Die Weiße Göttin”, widmete ihr die Kurzgeschichte “Ein Toast auf Ava Gardner” und das Gedicht “Nicht schlafen können” ,in dem er von der Erregung erzählt, die die erotische Muse der 50er-Jahre in ihm erweckte.

They were seen on more than one occasion having an afternoon chat on the pavement café outside Bar Bosch, on Paseo del Born. The poet Robert Graves was over seventy by the time the stunning Ava Gardner first visited him in 1955. The author of “I, Claudius” and “The White Goddess” dedicated the short story “A toast to Ava Gardner” and the poem “Unable to Sleep” to her, the latter recounting the excitement her erotic nature aroused in him during the fifties.

Miguel Angel Silvestre, “El Duque”, drehte die letzte Szene des Films “The Pelayos” auf den Stufen des Pas d’en Quint, die von der Plaza de Cort zur Plaza del Mercat führen. Als er im Smoking unter einem starken künstlichen Regen, der extra für die Szene geschaffen wurde, die Stufen herunter rannte, rutschte er aus und verletzte sich am Knöchel. Der Dreh musste unterbrochen werden.

Dressed in a Tuxedo and running under the strong artificial rain created specially for the scene, he slipped on one of the marble steps and injured his ankle. Filming had to be suspended.

SCHAUFENSTER (MIT PRESTIGE UND BESONDERHEITEN) Von Pere Joan und Enriqueta Llorca Viele Geschäfte im Stadtzentrum und auch in der Peripherie sind von Franchise-Unternehmen übernommen worden. Die Schaufenstergestaltung ist heute kalkuliert und in einem gewissen Grade einförmig, um den Geschmack der Massen zu treffen. Aus diesem Grund sehen sich alle “entwickelten” Städte ziemlich ähnlich. Es gibt jedoch einige wenige Schaufenster, die noch Geschmack oder persönliche Launen widerspiegeln. In Palma erinnert man sich an Namen von Geschäften, die es bereits seit Jahrzehnten nicht mehr gibt, wie “El Japón en Los Ängeles” (“Der Japaner in Los Angeles”) oder das Schuhgeschäft “La fuerza del destino” (“Die Macht des Schicksals”). Hier schlagen wir einen Spaziergang vor, bei dem Schaufenster und Ladenschilder zu sehen sind, die Geschichte haben oder eine Besonderheit in ihrer Gestaltung aufweisen, wobei wir besonderes Augenmerk auf diejenigen gerichtet haben, die auffallende volumetrische Elemente enthalten.

WINDOW SHOPPING By Pere Joan and Enriqueta Llorca Many of the shops in the city centre (and some further afield) have been taken over by franchises, and window dressing has become a carefully calculated operation. To some extent store displays are very uniform, seeking to appease the tastes of the majority, and this makes all “developed” cities seem fairly similar. But there are still some shops where personal tastes or eccentricities survive. In Palma people recall the names of establishments that disappeared decades ago such as “El Japón en Los Ángeles” or the shoe shop “La fuerza del destino”. This selection is a tour of the shop windows and signs that conserve some degree of style or peculiarity that has drawn attention to them, especially those that have striking proportions.

Als es in Palma noch wenige Farbige gab, schwang schon die kleine Negerin bei Cafés Llofriu im Schaufenster die Hüften. Damals trug sie ein Baströckchen, das jetzt durch ein Kleid im kubanischen Stil ersetzt worden ist. Das Geschäft, in dem Kaffee aus allen Erdteilen gemahlen wird, wurde im Jahre 1866 eröffnet. Die kleine automatische Negerin tanzt still und leise, fast unbemerkt, schon seit 50 Jahren.

Back in the day when there were hardly any black residents in Palma, the black woman in the window of Cafés Llofriu was already shaking her hips. In those days she wore a bikini with a tropical/tribal skirt, now replaced with more Cuban dress. The shop, offering freshlyground coffee from every corner of the globe, first opened its doors in 1866. The black robot woman has been silently dancing away for around 50 years now.

Ein wunderbarer großer Metall-Regenschirm regiert dieses im Jahre 1910 eröffnete Geschäft. Er wird bei der Sichtverschmutzung dieser überfüllten Einkaufsstraße leicht übersehen. Das Geschäft ist seit dem Jahr 1910 geöffnet. Seit es keine Fabrik mehr ist, wurde der Name “La fábrica de paraguas” (“Regenschirmfabrik”) verkürzt. Dort werden natürlich Regenschirme, aber auch Stöcke und Fächer zum Verkauf angeboten.

A large, magnificent metal umbrella is the centrepiece of this store, which opened its doors in 1910. It goes almost unnoticed in the visual noise of this brightly-coloured street. Since it ceased the manufacturing side of the business, the name was shortened from ‘The Umbrella Factory’ to simply ‘Umbrellas’, selling umbrellas alongside walking canes and ladies’ fans.

Die runde Form des Knopfes und seine Eignung als Schild für ein Kurzwarengeschäft machen jeden weiteren Kommentar überflüssig. Interessant ist jedoch seine Lage in einer Gasse, in der, obwohl so kurz, weitere Kurzwarengeschäfte, eine Polsterei, HipHop-Geschäfte, ein Plattengeschäft, ein Flickschuster und eine Stickerei, in der auf moderne Art, nämlich auf menschlicher Haut (Tattoo) gestickt wird, Platz finden.

The rotundity of the button, and its suitability for a haberdashery go without saying. But its location is interesting, in such a short street where it nonetheless competes with other haberdasheries, an upholsterer, Hip-hop stores, a record shop, a cobbler and a tattoo parlour.

Im Jahre 1979 eröffnet, hat “Ein Antiquitätengeschäft” noch immer keinen Namen (“wozu, wir haben es nicht eilig...”). Interessant ist das rote Blechauto, das der Besitzer jeden Tag auf einem Stück Holz vor das Schaufenster stellt, damit es den Bürgersteig nicht berührt und so das Schaufenster diskret auf die enge und wenig frequentierte Gasse ausdehnt, ohne dabei die Vorschriften für die Nutzung öffentlicher Straßen zu verletzen.

It still doesn’t have a name (“why should it – what’s the rush?”), even though the shop opened in 1979. Check out the red tin car the owner puts out in front of the window every day to expand his display a little into the narrow, quiet street, supporting it on a piece of wood so as not to touch the pavement and thus avoiding any accusations of obstructing the thoroughfare.

Sowohl der Name (“Der Versand”) als auch die Zeichnungen auf dem -ziemlich alten- Schild lassen keinen Zweifel darüber aufkommen, was dieses Geschäft anbietet - den Versand von Waren in alle Erdteile. Seit dem Jahr 1905 wird hier verpackt und verschickt. Von der Straße aus sieht man Waagen mit Geschichte, eine vergilbte Weltkarte, einen Globus, alle typischen Elemente. Die Überlagerung und Fusion beider Welten und Stile erzeugen einen seltsamen Effekt.

You’d expect a shop specialising in religious articles to be full of images of saints and candles. What’s unusual about this chandlery is that it’s located on the site of a former hairdressing salon, and the Seventies pop décor of the shop windows hasn’t changed. The collision and fusion of these two worlds produces a curious effect.

Eine komplette Restaurierung des Gebäudes verschaffte dem Gewürzladen und seinem berühmten Logo ein neues Gesicht. Aus mit Messern bewaffneten Bauern, die ein flüchtendes Schwein verfolgen, wurde ein elegantes Logo aus klaren Linien. Proteste eines Tierschutzvereins ließen das Logo mit den Messern (unerlässliche Schlachtinstrumente) verschwinden. Das Geschäft ist seit dem Jahr 1940 geöffnet.

A complete renovation of the building changed both its look and its famous logo. Once featuring a cartoon of farmworkers armed with knives chasing a pig, it now sports a more elegant and stylishly drawn logo. Protests from a society conscious of animal rights saw the knives disappear from the logo, even though they’re an essential part of butchery. The shop has been open since 1940.

CA´N MIQUEL, FORN DE SA PELLETERIA Carrer Pelleteria, 8-A Das Logo zeigt Miquel, den echten Bäcker, in langem Unterhemd und kurzer Unterhose. Das wirkliche Schaufenster dieser Bäckerei befindet sich in ihrem Inneren: der enorme Backofen, die Schränke, die Behälter für Backzutaten, die Fotografien und Gemälde, auf denen oft Miquel zu sehen ist. Die Geschichte der Bäckerei kann offenbar bis ins Jahr 1565 zurückverfolgt werden, auch wenn Miquels Großvater das Geschäft im Jahre 1914 eröffnete. Jetzt denkt Miquel an eine Schließung der Bäckerei.

The real shop window of this business is inside, with a huge oven for everyone to see, cupboards, packets and photos plus a couple of paintings, many of Miquel. It seems that the bakery can be traced back to 1565, although his grandfather opened it in 1914. He’s currently considering closing down the business.

Sie wurden vom Institut Balear d´Habitatge (Balearischen Gesellschaft zur Förderung des Wohnungsbaus) als Werbung und Markenzeichen auf den Balkon gestellt. Das Interessante daran ist der Balkon als Schaufenster. Diese Figur steht auf der Dachterrasse dieses Gebäudes, aber sie ist nur zu sehen, wenn man sich etwas von diesem so majestätischen Gebäude entfernt.

Loaned by the Balearic Housing Institute for the balcony of the property that was undergoing renovation work, to lure onlookers and as a mark of its identity. The idea of a balcony as a display is an interesting one. This figure stands on the terrace of the building, but can only be seen properly when you move away a little from the building it majestically presides over.

Painter, sculptor, engraver and ceramic artist. He’s pushed forward the boundaries of artistic expression. In 1980 he accepted an American company’s corporate identity commission, which would give rise to the La Caixa motif. From 1956 until his death in 1983, he lived in Mallorca. Almost every Sunday he attended the 12:30 Mass alongside his wife, Pilar Juncosa, at the Santuario de la Bonanova.

In 1970 he began a solo career and became an anti-war activist. On 8th December 1980 he was shot 5 times and killed. In April 1971 he was arrested together with Yoko Ono at the Meliá Mallorca, accused by her ex-husband of kidnapping their daughter. The charges were later dropped.

In her summer visit to the island she normally spends the odd morning shopping along Jaime III, and she’s popped into Loewe more than a few times.

In 2007 she chained herself symbolically to a tree to avoid the council felling trees opposite the museum that bears the family name. She comes to Francisco hairdressing salon to be groomed alongside her daughter-in-law María Blanca Cuesta. Borja comes with them and waits patiently in the lobby. These were different times, their relationship was wonderful.

Er verbringt seinen Lebensabend auf Mallorca und erklärt: “Hier habe ich meine Ruhe; im Garten meines Hauses steht ein Orangenbaum, die Luft ist gut, der Tourismus ist die einzige Industrie, die keine Luftverschmutzung verursacht”. Er stirbt am 16. Juni 1983 in Palma de Mallorca und ruht auf eigenen Wunsch im Gemeinschaftsgrab des Friedhofs.

A wounded republican soldier from the civil war, an accountant by trade and an exquisite performer of Boleros in the 40s and 50s. He retired in Mallorca and declared, “I’m very relaxed here: I have an orange tree in my garden, and I breathe clean air because the tourist industry is the only one that doesn’t pollute.” He died in Palma de Mallorca on 16th June 1983, and at his own request his ashes lie over a mass grave in the cemetery.

Wenn wir vom Flughafen in die Stadt kommen, sehen wir dort die ständig unterbrochene Baustelle des Kongresspalastes, der aufgrund verschiedener Konflikte zwischen dem Bauunternehmen und den öffentlichen Bauträgern für Polemik sorgte, das Gebäude des Stromversorgers GESA, das vor fast 3 Jahren geschlossen und zum Kulturgut und städtischen Eigentum erklärt wurde, und eine kürzlich eingeweihte Grünanlage.

As we enter the city from the airport, we come across the perpetually halted construction work on the Conference Centre, heaped in controversy after several conflicts between the construction company and the council team. There is also the GESA building, declared a cultural heritage site and council property, which has been closed for almost 3 years, as well as the recently opened “Zona Verde” green belt project.

Dieses verlassene Gebäude ist eines der wenigen der Zone, die nicht dem Bauwahn zum Opfer gefallen sind und mit Neubauten und hochwertigen restaurierten Gebäuden in diesem Viertel zusammenlebt, das im Zuge des Besonderen Restaurierungsplans als Wohngebiet redefiniert wurde.

One of the latest episodes in the history of Palma’s “Barrio Chino”, formerly one of the most run-down neighbourhoods in the city, with high crime rates and other problems. This abandoned building is one of the few remaining which didn’t succumb to construction fever, and coexists with new blocks and luxury renovations in this barrio that redefined itself as a classy residential area in the government-promoted drive for renovation and improvement.

Auffallend ist die Struktur aus Metallstangen, die den vorhersehbaren Einsturz des Gebäudes verhindert und hinter der uniformen Ästhetik dieses wunderschönen Platzes mit alten Gebäuden hervorragt, einer der wenigen, die die Aufteilung, die Gärten und den Reiz von einst behalten haben. Trotz der Stangen kann man sich noch vorstellen, wie es gewesen sein muss, in diesem Gebäude mit Blick auf den Platz und auf das Jugendstilgebäude “Ca’n Barceló” zu wohnen.

Check out the framework of iron beams to prevent the building’s probable collapse, and which contrasts with the uniform aesthetics of this beautiful square filled with time-honoured buildings. This is one of the few squares that conserve the layout, gardens and charm of yesteryear. Even with its supporting struts, one can still imagine what it would be like to live there, with views over the square and of the modernist building “Ca’n Barceló”.

Es lässt uns ahnen, wie dieser Platz vor dem Restaurierungsprozess, der dieses Randviertel zum Handelsviertel machte, ausgesehen haben muss.

This peculiar building in the “Sa Gerreria” neighbourhood is up for sale. The ground floor was dedicated to the sale of luggage, at a time when most shops in the area carried out activities related to leather goods, manufacturing or handicrafts. Its appearance gives us some idea of what this square was like before renovation turned the area from working class to upmarket commercial.

This street is one of the most unique corners of Palma, as along its short, narrow cobbled length we find a large number of mansions with patios from around the 17th century. Its irregular walls give way to the entrance of a former decoration shop, closed now for many years, where posters and signs reflect the passing of time and of trucks. Pause a while to admire these century old buildings.

Mythisches Restaurant und Treffpunkt. Mit einer Relativity (M.C. Escher)-ähnlichen Raumverteilung, zog es über Jahrzehnte hinweg Menschen aller Art an. Heute lebt das Lokal nur noch in unserer Vorstellung, wenn wir durch die Fenster die Spitzbögen im Inneren betrachten, die die einzigen Überlebenden außer der Fassade sind, die übrigens an einer der für Autofahrer kompliziertesten Kurven steht.

Legendary eatery and meeting point. With a layout similar to that of Relativity (M.C. Escher), for decades it welcomed people from all walks of life. Today we can only imagine the atmosphere, peeping through the windows at the shored up arches, the only survivors along with the façade – which incidentally constitutes one of the city’s most problematic bends for motorists.

Jahrhundert bereits Objekt vieler Vorschläge -unter anderem sollte das Museum von Palma darin beherbergt werden- ohne das jemals einer davon in die Tat umgesetzt wurde. Heute, nach 26 Jahren und einem mehr als sichtbaren Verfall ausgesetzt, hat das Haus einen geschätzten Wert von 1.2 Millionen Euro und wird bald im Zuge eines Enteignungsplans zum Verkauf angeboten.

Part of the inventory of public buildings since 1985, and boarded up ever since, this centrally located 18th century mansion has been the object of many plans and proposals – including one as the headquarters of the Museum of Palma – none of them leading to any concrete action. 26 years later, with evident signs of major deterioration, it’s been valued at 1.2 million euros and will soon be sold in a plan to dispose of council assets.

Man ahnt den Charakter eines Gebäudes, das vor nicht allzu vielen Jahren das eleganteste Reiseartikelgeschäft der Stadt beherbergte: “La Balear”. Nun sind schon 5 Jahre vergangen, seit der Bauträger das Projekt abbrach und von den geplanten Wohnungen ist nichts zu sehen. Besuchen Sie auch den hinteren Teil.

In the square by the Town Hall, we find scaffolding acting as a corset, barely supporting the façade of Ca’n Buades. You can make out the character of a building that not so long ago housed the most elegant travel goods store in the city: “La Balear”. Five years ago the developer left the project in limbo, and there’s no sign of the promised housing. Take a look around the back too.

Die Kosten für ihre Restaurierung liegen bei 8 Millionen Euro und es ist sehr wahrscheinlich, dass ihre Türen noch eine Weile geschlossen bleiben.

This former 12th century fortress, converted into an 18th century palace, and known since 1940 as “Palau Ca’n Oliver”, hides hundreds of stories behind its austere outer shell. Between days of luxury and days of abandonment there was a brief moment when it served as a squat for social purposes. Its value without renovation work is 8 million euros, and it’s likely we’ll see its doors closed for some time to come.

Mit seinem fortlaufenden sozial-kulturellen Programm ist dieses Projekt eine der Alternativen zum Verlassen von Gebäuden aus Unvermögen oder Desinteresse, die zur Verbesserung der Städte beitragen könnte. In diesem Haus lebte der berühmte Philologe und Linguistker Francecs de Borja Moll.

SA FONETA SOCIAL CENTRE Plaça d’Espanya Nº 10 In one of the most central squares, this self-managed squat has recently appeared, arising from the heat of the 15-M protest movement. With a continual sociocultural programme, this project offers an alternative to the abandonment of buildings due to lack of means or lack of interest, which could make our cities better. The illustrious philologist and linguist Francesc de Borja Moll lived here.

PALMAS POOLS Von Ana Nieto Palma, oder “Ciutat” (“Stadt”), wie es von seinen Einwohnern genannt wird, liegt direkt am Mittelmeer. Palmesaner, die gerne ein Bad nehmen, aber von Strand und Salz nicht begeistert sind, brauchen deshalb eine Alternative. Die Arabischen Bäder, eines der wenigen Beispiele muslimischer Architektur, das auf der Insel erhalten geblieben ist, werden schon seit mehreren Jahrhunderten nicht mehr benutzt...weshalb wir eine zeitgenössischere Option erforschen wollen: Pools. Aufgrund des Tourismusbooms, der Palma in den 60er- und 70er-Jahren zu einem der Hauptferienziele gemacht hat, befinden sich die meisten dieser Pools in den zahlreichen Hotels dieser Stadt. Seinerzeit gab es an den kurvigen Pools bunte Liegestühle (davon zeugen die alten Postkarten an der Rezeption vieler dieser Hotels): heute wurden viele durch gerade und funktionale Pools ersetzt. Und ohne weitere Umschweifen beginnen wir diesen kristallklaren und gechlorten Rundgang. Ab ins Wasser!

PALMA-POOLS By Ana Nieto Palma, or “Ciutat” as its inhabitants call it, is completely surrounded by the Mediterranean. Those who seek to take a dip but don’t like sand or salt need an alternative. The Arab Baths, one of the few examples of Muslim architecture remaining on the island, have been in disuse for several centuries, so we’re left to explore a more contemporary option: swimming pools. Owing to the tourist boom that turned Palma into one of the main holiday destinations of the 60s and 70s, most of these pools are to be found on the premises of the multitude of hotels dotted around the city. Back in their heyday, these pools were surrounded by a rainbow of deckchairs and loungers, and had curved forms (vintage postcards in the receptions of many of these hotels bear testament to this trend). Today many have been replaced with straight lines and more practical shapes. So without further ado let’s start our crystalline chlorinated route. Come on in, the water’s lovely!

A club hosting parties and events, with house music sessions and go-go girls dancing in skimpy underwear - a not uncommon sight in the bars and clubs along the seafront, which is one of the busiest evening stomping grounds. Its pavement café has two oval pools, with views of the port and the abundant yachts and pleasure boats anchored there.

A hotel situated in the centre of the Old Town, a stonesthrow from the museums and shops but hidden in one of the narrow streets of “La Lonja”. This is one of the masterpieces of gothic architecture in Mallorca. It has a small pool on the second floor patio, but thanks to the system of pressurised water jets you can swim against the current for hours.

This small hostel-residence has 29 rooms around the pool. It was built in 1956 and improvements were made in 2005. It’s located in “El Terreno”, the area where Camilo José Cela lived and edited the 276 editions of the magazine “Papeles de Son Armadans”, aimed at Spanish intellectuals of the time, both in Spain and in exile.

urban GRAPHIC ART By Jordi Pallarès, 2011 Now more than ever, the urban graphic works − signed, tagged with a pseudonym or simply anonymous − needs to connect with what’s going on in the city, and above all connect with its citizens. Aestheticising the surroundings, provoking thought in times of crisis and with the evident illegality and ephemeral nature of some of the art as a cornerstone, Palma offers the visitor some “pieces” that try to resist the passing of time and the respect of other artists, as well as some that have been carried out on the edge of legality as part of institutional or private projects. Like any city, Palma has had fruitful times in terms of generations and has taken on risky projects. It also has “zones” with a certain street art tradition (mostly on the outskirts) and points of the urban landscape where we can find interesting large and small-scale offerings, carried out using different techniques and using different materials to paint on. Its easy location and safety mean that creators from everywhere drop by and leave their mark in any corner of the city.

NURIA MORA Carrer de la Samaritana, Fassade der Nummer 14 (Ca n’Amunt). 2008 im Rahmen des Festivals Alternatilla durchgeführt, handelt es sich hierbei um ein legales Projekt dieser Künstlerin und Illustratorin, die gelegentlich und beruflich mit Eltono in Verbindung steht. Die seitliche Fassade eines Gebäudes wurde mit einem engen Muster aus geometrischen und floralen Elementen personalisiert, das den Dialog mit der Architektur sucht und einen gewissen sozialen Anspruch an den Bürger stellt.

NURIA MORA Carrer de la Samaritana, wall of Nº 14 (Ca n’Amunt). Painted in Palma in 2008 as part of the Festival Alternatilla, this is a legal project by this painter and illustrator, occasionally linked professionally with Eltono. This is the side wall of a building, customised with a careful combination of geometric and floral elements which seek a dialogue with the architecture and a certain social impact on the citizens.

SANTIAGO MORILLA

Im Rahmen eines von den Künstlerzentren CRIDA und CRCC organisierten Workshops malt dieser Künstler aus Madrid “sobrasada extrema”. Zwei groß angelegte Wandgemälde, die zwei tellurische Momente zwischen einem Mann und einigen Sobrasadas darstellen. Die Inhalte seiner öffentlichen Interventionen und deren Rechnung situieren ihn in den Reihen anderer europäischer Stadtkreativen, mit denen er Monumentalität und Verunsicherung teilt.

In 2011 during the workshop organised by CRIDA and Palma’s CRCC, this Madrid-born artist painted “extreme sobrasada”. Two large-scale murals telling two stories of back-to-nature encounters between man and sobrasada sausagemeat. The content and target of his public projects positions him alongside other European urban artists, with whom he also shares his love of large-scale disconcerting work.

LLORAR

Wand des Torrent de Sa Riera (auf der Höhe des gleichnamigen Parks). In den Torrents von Palma, die den Undergroundzonen der grossen Metropolen in nichts nachstehen, werden Graffitis “toleriert”. Im Torrent “Sa Riera” breitet sich Llorars Werk wie die Tränen seiner ikonischen Augen und wie seine eigenen Tattoos aus. Er steht mit Gruppen wie DPS und FUZK in Palma und Barcelona in Verbindung und ist mit seinem dunklen und kritischen Stil vermutlich einer der besten und charismatischsten Kreativen der Insel.

NASE/OVAS

Ein obligatorischer Stopp für Liebhaber des orthodoxen Graffiti. OVAS und NASE gehören Crews wie TCT und CAS an und teilen sich Wände, auf denen gekonnte Wildstyles der Old School manchmal Comicfiguren die Hand reichen. Diese Mauer wird ständig erneuert und steht mit “Linea 6”, einem klassischen Geschäft für den Künstlerbedarf, in dem auch ausgestellt und sich ad hoc gekleidet wird, im Zusammenhang.

In Palma los torrentes are spaces where street art is “tolerated”, making them equivalent to the underground areas of the great cities. In “Sa Riera”, Llorar’s piece expands like the tears from his iconic eyes (Llorar means ‘cry’ in Spanish) and his own tattoos. Linked with collectives like DPS and FUZK in Palma and Barcelona, dark, often critical, he is probably one of the most skilled and charismatic creators on the island.

NASE/OVAS Carrer ample de la Mercè, between Nos 11 and 13. This is a key location for lovers of the most orthodox graffiti. OVAS and NASE, members of crews like TCT and CAS, share walls where old school wildstyle experts sometimes surround themselves with comic characters. They constantly renew the art on this wall, which is linked to “Linea 6”, an old favourite store for painting accessories, exhibiting material and freestyle dressing.

GRIP FACE Carrer d’en Bosc Nº 31 (Sa Gerreria).

Das vielseitige Werk von Grip Face beinhaltet eine latente Kritik an der sozialen Gebrechlichkeit. Gemalt oder gezeichnet, blind oder sehend, zeigen sich seine Figuren -mit tiefen Augenringen und ausgezehrten Wangen- auch auf grotesken Collagen. Diese Figuren -die geschickt in Sticker und gestanzte Papiere verschiedener Formate verwandelt werden-nehmen seit einiger Zeit eine PostPunk-Ikonographie voller bissiger Botschaften und Karikaturen an.

Grip Face’s versatile artwork contains a latent criticism of social fragility. Whether painted or drawn, blind or sighted, his characters with bags under their eyes and high cheekbones also feature in grotesque collages. Skilfully translated onto stickers and perforated papers in several formats, the same characters have for some time taken on a post-punk iconography full of scathing messages and caricatures.

Bose und Dirz betreiben auch eine internationale Stickersammlung, um diese Art von Unterlage bekannt zu machen. Der Kiosk verkauft auch Schablonen und verstärkte Blätter von Grip Face, Phogo und anderen.

Bose, Bu, Dirz, Harry and Marble make up “Stick Soldiers”. Individually or collectively, their iconic animated tags are offered as stickers of shurikens, ghosts, rabbits, trucks and marbles respectively. Bose and Dirz also manage an international sticker collection to promote this type of format. The kiosk also stocks stencils and post-its by Grip Face, Phogo and others.

GARLÓ

Carrer Corderia, 11 und 22 (Ca n’Amunt). Der gebürtige Calvianer Garló stellt gekonnt die Realität dar. Garló, der mit Graffiti und Illustration vertraut ist und mit SDS Crew und POLLAART in Verbindung steht, verwendet Videos in einigen seiner Projekte. Eine Faust und ein Boxhandschuh sind auf einem Bild als Metapher der Impotenz vereint und symbolisieren auch die Lust am Leben und den Kampf um das, was man möchte. In derselben Straße findet man auch einen Heißluftballon am Eingang eines Lokals.

OA, der mit DPS und FUZK in Verbindung steht, ist ein ambitionierter Grafikdesigner, der die Grenzen zwischen Malerei und Graffiti erforscht. Ohne eine gewisse GraffitiTradition zu ignorieren, erkennt er das anonyme Erbe aller derjenigen an, die wie er ihre Spuren hinterlassen. OA nimmt seine eigene grafische Identität in einem Abstraktionsprozess wieder auf, in dem seine persönliche Marke in der Linie des Post-Graffiti verwischt wird.

KOLLEKTIV “NO PRINGUES MÁS”. Carrer de la Mar, 15. (Sa Llonja).

Dieses Kollektiv, das mit verschiedenen subkulturellen Ethiken in Verbindung steht, bombardiert die Stadt schon seit Jahren mit Siebdruck, Stencils und Wandzeichnungen. Dieses Werk zeigt mutierte Zweibeiner als Metapher für das Überleben in der Stadt. Ein schwarz gehaltenes Graffiti, das sich sequenziell wiederholt und so eine aufsteigende Bewegung erzielt, die in seinem Zusammenspiel mit dem Kran beginnt.

Originally from Calvià, Garló is skilful at representing reality. Initiated in graffiti and illustration, and linked to the SDS crew and POLLA ART, he incorporates video into some projects. A fist and a boxing glove come together in one stencil as a metaphor for impotence, also symbolising a desire to live and to fight for what one loves. In the same street, a zeppelin on the doors of a business.

OA Costa de Ca’n Berga, between Nos 1 and 3. Linked to DPS and to FUZK, OA is an ambitious creator trained in graphic design, who tests the limits between painting and graffiti. Without ignoring a certain mural tradition, he gives recognition to the anonymous memory of all those who leave their mark like him. OA claims his own graphic identity in a process of abstraction where his personal tag is distorted in the line of post-graffiti.

“NO PRINGUES MÁS” COLLECTIVE Carrer de la Mar Nº 15. (barrio Sa Llonja). Linked to several underground aesthetic movements, this collective has spent years intensely bombarding the city with silkscreen prints, stencils and drawings on walls. This piece reproduces two-legged mutant beings as a metaphor for survival in the city. A black stencil repeated in a sequence giving an upward movement that starts as it interacts with the tow truck.

VERBORGENE GASTRONOMIE Von Oscar Palmer Ihrer mediterranen Tradition entsprechend, ist die balearische Küche außergewöhnlich vielseitig und reich an Geschmäckern, Farben, Zutaten und Abstufungen. Obwohl Mallorca bereits seit über 5 Jahrzehnten Ziel des Massentourismus ist, bleibt dem Besucher ein großer Teil der gastronomischen Schätze der Insel verborgen. Jeder kennt die Ensaimada, aber nur wenige Fremde probieren weitere Köstlichkeiten der mallorquinischen Öfen wie Robiols, Crespells, Empanadas und Cocarrois. Gleiches gilt für die exquisite Sobrasada, die heutzutage so populär ist, dass sie andere Würste wie den Camaiot, die Botifarrons und die fast nirgends mehr zu findenden “Blanquets” komplett in den Schatten gestellt hat. Man kann fast sagen, dass es auf Mallorca zwei Welten gibt, die so gut wie nie in Berührung kommen: die der Strände, der Wurst und der Ensaimada und die der folgenden Läden und Produkte, die die Einheimischen eifersüchtig für sich selbst reservieren und die wir nun dem neugierigen Touristen zeigen wollen.

HIDDEN GASTRONOMY By Oscar Palmer As we would expect given its Mediterranean tradition, Balearic cuisine is exceptionally varied, rich in sensations, colours, ingredients and levels of enjoyment. Nonetheless, in spite of over five decades as a hugely popular tourist destination, most of Mallorca’s gastronomic delicacies are still largely unknown to visitors. Everybody recognises an ensaimada, but few outsiders try any other local delights from the bakery, missing out on robiols, crespells, empanadas and cocarrois. The same could be said of sobrasada, a delicacy which has been so popularised that today it has completely eclipsed other types of sausagemeat such as the camaiot, botifarrons and the more difficult to find “blanquets”. We could almost say that in Mallorca two realities coexist and ne’er the twain shall meet: the beach, the sausage and ensaimada on the one hand, and those shops and products that locals jealously keep for their own enjoyment on the other, although these are now also within reach of the curious tourist.

Im XII. Jahrhundert gegründet (es gibt sie schon solange, dass sie der Straße, in der sie sich befindet, den Namen verliehen hat), ist sie eine der wenigen Bäckereien, die noch in Handarbeit zwei sich im Aussterben befindliche Brötchen herstellen: die Magraneta (rund und süß, da sie mit Milch, nicht mit Wasser hergestellt wird) und das exquisite Llonguet: leicht, knusprig und in anderen Zeiten so beliebt, dass ihr Name auf dem Rest der Insel als Synonym für “Palmesaner” benutzt wurde.

Founded in the 12th century (it’s been there so long that it even gave the street its name), this is one of the few bakeries that still handmake two types of bread close to extinction: magraneta (a round, sweet bun made with milk rather than water) and the delicious llonguet - the light, crunchy bread roll so popular in times gone by that its name came to be a synonym for the people of Palma in the rest of the island.

This small grocery shop, founded in 1941, was one of the first in Palma dedicated to the sale of purely Mallorcan products which the proprietor collected personally from the surrounding villages. Among them, even today, we can find camaiot (pork meat, fat and blood; cooked and conserved in the skin), perhaps the most exquisite sausage the islands have to offer and the least known outside of the island.

Founded in 1945, it’s the most characteristic spice shop in Palma. Although it has stalls at the city’s main markets, the original shop still survives today in this busy pedestrian street. Their star product: paprika made from “tap de cortí”, a local variety of red pepper with the brightest of colour, essential for correctly seasoning the omnipresent sobrasada.

Der Robiol ist ein Halbmond aus gebackenem Teig, der gewöhnlich mit Kürbiskonfitüre oder Quark gefüllt ist. Diese jahrhundertealte Bäckerei mit Jugendstilfassade kann sich rühmen, die schönsten Exemplare davon zu verkaufen. Obwohl der Robiol (wie auch die leckeren Empanadas mit Fleisch und Erbsen) ein traditionelles Ostergebäck ist, ist er heutzutage das ganze Jahr über erhältlich und stellt die beste Alternative zur typischen Ensaimada dar.

The robiol is a baked semi-circular bun, normally filled with cabello de ángel pumpkin jam or cottage cheese, and this century-old patisserie with a modernist shop front can boast that it sells the most beautiful. Even though they’re traditionally an Easter treat (just like the meat and pea empanada bake) these days you can buy them all year round, and they’re the best alternative to the traditional ensaimada.

Der 1945 gegründete Gewürzladen ist der charakteristischste von Palma. Auch wenn er Stände auf den größten Märkten der Stadt hat, gibt es noch den Originalladen in dieser vielbesuchten Fußgängerzone. If there were ever a living definition of a colmado then this is it: a tiny grocer’s shop crammed full of exquisite foods and made to feel smaller still because of the hundreds of sobrasadas that hang from the ceiling like edible stalactites. Highlights include the abundant range of Mallorcan pâtés (which are excellent in spite of their little-trumpeted reputation), including two homemade varieties: black Iberian pig and rabbit liver.

Es gibt auch die geteilten bitteren Oliven und die Kapern, die auf keiner balearischen Tafel fehlen dürfen.

Located in the spectacular El Olivar market (a must-see), this stall offers you the possibility to buy by weight one of the most traditional but little-known appetizers the islands have to offer: samphire, eaten since the time of the Romans because of its antiscorbutic properties. Also sold are split bitter olives and giant capers, an essential Balearic side dish.

One of the best-known grocery stores since 1872, today La Pajarita offers a delicate balance between a traditional charcuterie (look for their sliced truffle-stuffed chicken) and offering delicatessen articles. Among the latter are up-and-coming gourmet products, like natural sea salt collected in locations such as Ses Salines and Es Trenc, and the essential Gori de Muro fisherman’s biscuits.

CONFITERÍA FRASQUET

Für Liebhaber süßer Köstlichkeiten unumgänglich, verführt diese exquisite Confiserie seit dem XVII. Jahrhundert die Palmesaner mit ihren explosiven “Cuartos Embatumats” (Biskuit mit Eigelbfüllung und einer dicken Schicht Merengue oder Schokolade) und ihren süßen Rosenkränzen (Ketten aus Bonbons und Pralinen mit einer Hostie aus kandiertem Kürbis), die traditionell an Allerheiligen den Kindern geschenkt werden.

A must-see for anyone with a sweet tooth, this exquisite confiterie has been tempting residents of Palma since the 17th century with its explosive quarter “embatumats” (a sponge filled with sugared egg-yolk, iced with a thick layer of meringue or chocolate) and its rosarios dulces (a strings of sweets resembling rosary beads), a traditional present for children on All Saint’s Day.

Auch wenn er bescheidener als der Mercado del Olivar ist, verdient der Mercado de Santa Catalina einen Besuch. Hier hat seit 1950 die Familie Izquierdo ihren Stand. Unter den zahlreichen Besonderheiten, die den Mahón-Käse aus ökologischer Herstellung ergänzen, finden wir eine weitere Grundzutat der mallorquinischen Küche auf andere Art: die Mandel, die zum Öl destilliert oder als Gewürz zu Mehl zermahlen verkauft wird.

Although it’s a little more suburban and low-key than El Olivar, Santa Catalina market is well worth a visit. Since 1950 the Izquierdo family has had its stall there. Among the countless delicacies that flank their organic Mahon cheeses we find new uses for another essential ingredient of Mallorcan cuisine: the almond, distilled into oil or ground into flour for dressings.

Mit der Absicht, die Atmosphäre des Viertels am Leben zu erhalten, hat diese wunderbare Spirituosengeschäft den Weinverkauf direkt vom Fass wiederentdeckt. Unter den vorrangig mallorquinischen Weinen sind der “negre sang”, der Weißwein “Blanco de Uva Moll” und der Messwein, der dort am besten direkt als Aperitif getrunken wird, zu empfehlen. Man kann auch Siphonflaschen für den traditionellen “Palo Mallorquin” (Chininlikör) ausleihen.

With a dream of increasing the neighbourhood spirit, this marvellous old-style drinks shop is bringing back sales of wine by volume direct from the barrel. Among those sold – which are primordially Mallorcan – are the blood-red “negre sang”, a white made from moll grapes, and the priest’s favourite “vino de misa”, ideal for a glass there and then as an aperitif. There’s also the returnable siphon bottle to accompany the traditional palo mallorquín (quinine liqueur).

Seit Jahrzehnten gibt es in Palma Tanzsäle, Diskotheken, Kneipen: ein breitgefächertes Angebot an Fluchtmöglichkeiten für den kompetenten Städter. Wir sprechen von Räumen, die sich durch ihr Abweichen von der Norm an den Rand der moralischen Rechtschaffenheit bewegen und so zur Höhle des Wolfs werden, der im Menschen lebt. PALMA LA NUIT By Marina P. de Cabo Night falls. It’s the signal for the inhabitant of any large contemporary city to free themselves of responsibilities. They cast aside their role as cogs in the machine of society; their wilder self craves hedonism. To cater for the needs of the darker side of their antagonistic lifestyles and avoid the appearance of psychotic tendencies, a series of bars and clubs have flourished with topsy-turvy timetables and routines. For decades, Palma has been home to dancehalls, pubs, nightclubs and other nightspots: a colourful range of alternatives for the discerning citizen to forget about their cares. These are places where norms are left behind, and we approach the outskirts of moral uprightness, becoming a den for the wolf that resides within. The keys to the success of these businesses, their luck and their evolution are very different: some have been reformed, others survive without any signs of their former glamour. This selection also contains a few premises now closed down, whose exclusion would have been a sign of negligence to the city’s nocturnal history.

MICROS

Auch wenn das Lokal bereits 30 Jahre früher eröffnet wurde, haben es die jetzigen Besitzer seit 1987 inne. Zu dieser Zeit bestand noch Zugang zu einem Anbau, in dem Filme gezeigt wurden und der dem Besucher in der Dunkelheit nächtliche Aktivitäten verschiedenster Art ermöglichte. Heute ist die Klientel gemischt: Herren über 50 teilen sich Lokal, Schlaflosigkeit und Toxizität mit 20-jährigen. Stimmung kommt ab 3 Uhr morgens auf.

Even though it’s 30 years since its inauguration, the current owners have run it since 1987. Back in those days there was an annexe where you could drop in to watch films. The complete darkness encouraged a range of behaviours in the night-birds who visited the annexe. The current clientele is varied – fifty-year-olds share space, insomnia and toxicity with twenty-somethings. Gets going around 3 a.m.

SA FAXINA

Seit 29 Jahren leiten 3 Brüder dieses diskrete Pub im englischen Stil. Sie beherrschen perfekt ihr Metier, mixen wunderbare Gin Tonics und bieten verschiedene Whiskymarken an. Sie haben eine feste und alteingesessene Klientel, die zum Fußballschauen und Neuigkeiten austauschen ins Lokal kommt.

Three siblings have run this discreet English-style pub for the last 29 years. They know their trade perfectly, mixing fabulous Gin & Tonics and offering a range of whiskies. They have a faithful slightly older clientele who come to the pub to see the odd football match and share their experiences.

EL MERENDERO

This tiny but revered space has been dedicated to flamenco since it opened 30 years ago. Its walls are covered with photos, posters, record sleeves, instruments and other objects related with flamenco. The proprietor, Antonio Carrillo, is a good friend of Paco de Lucía, and has played alongside Valderrama and Molina. Don’t miss his guitar improvisations and his peculiar sangrías.

BÉSAME MUCHO

Prototyp eines Tanzsaals, dessen Name sofort das bekannte Lied der Mexikanerin Consuelo Velázquez in Erinnerung ruft. Die mit Spiegelstreifen dekorierten Wände und die von der Decke hängenden Drehkugeln lassen nichts mehr vom einstigen Glamour dieses Lokals erahnen. Obwohl seine Besitzer gewechselt haben, ist dieses mit Teppichen ausgestattete Tanzlokal dazu verdammt, immer noch den 70er-Jahre-Mief mit sich herumzutragen.

Prototypical nightclub whose name can only be associated with the famous song by Mexican Consuelo Velázquez. The mirrored walls and spinning mirrorballs hanging from the ceiling no longer reflect a trace of the club’s former glamour. It might have changed owners, but the carpeted premises have been dragging along its motheaten seventies feel like a ball and chain for decades now.

PUB PAQUITA

Schon 15 Jahre lang verleiht Paquita diesem Nachtlokal ihren Namen. In der Anfangszeit wurde Champagner namhafterer Marken angeboten, mit der Zeit wurde das Angebot an die Bedürfnisse der Gäste angepasst. Neue Räume wurden hinzugefügt und die Aufteilung und Dekoration geändert. Jetzt ist das Pub Paquita ein dunkles Lokal mit eklektischer Dekoration. Sein Besucher ist männlich und im fortgeschrittenen Alter.

15 years ago Paquita gave her name to this business. Initially she stocked the finest brands of champagne, although the drinks on offer varied according to customer needs. New areas were opened up and the layout and décor were modified. These days it’s dark with eclectic decoration. The clientele is somewhat older and mostly male.

TITO’S Passeig Marítim, s/n 1923 eröffnet. Seine klaren Linien, die transparenten Aufzüge und die Licht- und Soundanlagen stellten den Club jahrzehntelang an die Spitze der Inlokale. Einst von Größen wie Marlene Dietrich, Dean Martin und Ray Charles frequentiert, findet der Besucher bei Tito’s jetzt lediglich aus der Mode gekommene Laserstrahlen, übernächtigte Gogos und übertriebene Transvestiten.

COMPLEJO BROADWAY

TITO’S Passeig Marítim, s/n It opened its doors in 1923. Its refined appearance, the clear glass elevators and its sound and lighting system justified its place for decades at the pinnacle of the city’s fashionable clubs. Once frequented by the likes of Marlene Dietrich, Dean Martin and Ray Charles, today’s visitor will find no more than antiquated laser beams, tired go-go dancers and overdressed transvestites.

BROADWAY COMPLEX

Dieser kürzlich abgerissene Komplex bot jahrzehntelang ein sehr alternatives Nachtleben an. Er bestand aus einer Reihe von über mysteriöse Gänge und getarnte Türen verbundenen Räumen. For decades this recently demolished night spot housed many different nocturnal leisure alternatives. Made up of a series of rooms interconnected by mysterious corridors and camouflaged doors, it allowed visitors to begin the evening in an indie nightclub, and change ambience at whim, ending the evening in a deserted strip joint flooded in a ghostly blue light straight out of a David Lynch film.

BRUIXERIES

Von einem devoten, heterogenen und vorurteilsfreien Publikum besucht, ist Bruixeries ein mystischer Ort, der unbedingt besucht werden sollte. An das Club-Konzept grenzend, aber ohne eine extreme Verworfenheit zu erreichen, hält sich das Lokal seit Jahrzehnten und bietet Drinks, Technomusik aus den 80ern und dadaistisches Vergnügen.

With a devout, mixed, open-minded clientele, Bruixeries constitutes a legendary venue which is a true must-see. Bordering on the concept of a cavern but not quite so abject, it’s stayed in the firing line for decades now, offering drinks, eighties techno and dadaist entertainment.

CHOTIS

Diese nicht klassifizierbare Bar in einer namenlosen Gasse, die an der Plaza Gomila beginnt und an einer Mauer mit Rosette endet, war Szene der Abenteuer mehrerer verlorener Generationen in der Unterwelt. Der Besuch des Lokals von Bert und Maruja, eines eigenartigen Paares, verwandelte sich stets zum Risikosport. Nach dem Tod von Maruja aufgegeben, ist das ehemalige Lokal nun eine Wäscherei.

Located in an unnamed alleyway that leads from Plaza Gomila to a wall with a rose window, this unclassifiable bar has been the backdrop for several lost generations’ underground adventures. A visit to the inimitable Bert and Maruja’s venue invariably became a journey into the unknown. Closed down after Maruja’s death, the premises have evolved into a laundry.

LA POLILLA

Diskretes Lokal, dass dichten Schutz vor der aufgehenden Sonne bietet. Nur die furchtlosesten und zähesten Nachtschwärmer gelangen dorthin. Die vage Erinnerung erhält das Lokal am Leben. Es wird von mit Holzfällerhemden und engen Jeans bekleideten Billardspielerinnen und den verschiedensten Kreaturen der Nacht besucht.

A discreet establishment, offering an opaque refuge from the dawn sunlight. Only the most intrepid and tenacious night-birds manage to reach this stage of the game. It survives thanks to the vague trace it leaves on one’s memory. Frequented by women dressed in tight jeans and lumberjack shirts playing pool, and by the widest array of creatures of the night.
