Staircase at Llandudno Swimming Pool
Foyer at Theatre Severn
The recently opened Llandudno Swimming Pool is a landmark for Welsh swimming facilities. It has a 25 metre, 8-lane, international short course competition pool and a 20 metre, 4-lane pool for teaching and training. With seating for 500 competitors and spectators, the bigger pool’s floor can be raised to enable it to be used for non-swimming events.
For the staff balcony viewing area, a similar system with extended concrete fixings was installed to accommodate a 1.5kN loading. Both here and in the spectator area, 10mm clear float glass with flat polished edges and radiussed corners (toughened to BS6206 Class A) was used for infill panels. This provides a striking focal point along the full length of the pool.
Architectural Ironmongery Solutions Laidlaw is the leading specifier, distributor and technical service provider of architectural ironmongery to the UK construction industry. As with all its product portfolios, Laidlaw's huge range of architectural ironmongery, including the renowned Orbis brand, is designed to comply with European building standards.
Each Laidlaw sales office is supported by a centralised distribution centre at Willenhall which has the capacity to pack and despatch individual items or by doorset. Please contact your local sales office for further information.

The requirement to give this facility a modern, spacious look has been greatly enhanced through the use of the handrail and balustrade features. The door furniture too is really distinctive and in combination with accessories such as door closers, access control pads and signage avoided any potential compatibility problems.

Orbis Commercial lever and pull handles and door closers were also used, including a number of bespoke 25mm stainless steel, back-to-back and bolt-through pull handles. Other products included digital and manual access control keypads and bi-lingual fire door signage.

As the UK's leading specifier and supplier of architectural ironmongery, doorsets, handrail & balustrading and access control solutions, Laidlaw offers its unique service through a national network of 13 sales offices and trade counters.
Doorset Solutions Laidlaw has pioneered the Orbis Doorsets solution which is supplied complete with the door, frame, architraves and factory fitted ironmongery to maximise efficiency and minimise on-site work.
RACTORS
For Theatre Severn, contemporary interior styling was particularly important and sell-out performances throughout the year will ensure that doorset performance is put to the ultimate test. Orbis Classic door furniture provides an ideal contrast to the distinctive Normbau colour range, factory preparation of the hardware guaranteeing perfect installation, long-term durability and lasting aesthetics.
Among 54 different Laidlaw products specified for the £6 million project, the Stainless Steel Handrail and Balustrade system was used extensively throughout. For the main staircase, 40mm diameter brushed stainless steel handrails and 60mm diameter uprights and concrete fixings were provided to take a 3.0kN loading. For the spectator steps, Type QE raised tactile elements were also fitted to the handrail for the benefit of partially sighted visitors.
NT
Among the many co-ordinated items of door furniture supplied to the project, Orbis Commercial levers and pull handles in Silk Anodised Aluminium and Satin Stainless Steel were installed alongside Normbau Nylon Lever Sets and a series of Arrow architectural closers and Salto locksets. Orbis Commercial’s simple styling in stainless steel offers a high standard of performance, guaranteed for a minimum of 10 years, while the Normbau nylon offers a scratch resistant, anti-static finish in RAL colours which will not fade. With a variety of fixings including back-to-back, bolt through and face fixed – with or without rose, specifiers have an extensive array of configuration options. Complementary accessories are available for both Orbis Commercial and Normbau ranges, in the latter case extending to 'Special Needs' fittings. Willmott Dixon Operations Manager Harry Dhanjal commented “Laidlaw’s ability to produce fully detailed, door by door ironmongery schedules made life very straightforward on this project. The support of their project management and estimating teams showed how experienced the company is at managing projects of this scale”.

The recently built £28 million ‘Theatre Severn’, designed by Austin Smith Lord, was described on its opening as a “dose of cultural dynamite” for the region. Occupying a prominent position overlooking the River Severn in Shrewsbury, on the opposite bank to the old music hall which it replaced, the 650-seat venue built by Willmott Dixon provides further illustration of the diversity of major projects in which Laidlaw Solutions’ products are being specified. In what is set to enhance Shrewsbury’s reputation as the region’s cultural capital, the flagship theatre, which houses a 638-seat main auditorium, 250-seat 'Walker' Theatre, dance studio, exhibition space, restaurant and the 'Chapel' Bar was officially opened by H.R.H. Prince Edward on 25th March.
