ORBIS ANTI-LIGATURE – INTRODUCTION
What is anti-ligature ironmongery? An anti-ligature product is one from which it is not possible for a ligature to remain secured. The purpose is to deny individuals the opportunity to use the hardware as a means of attaching a ligature for the purpose of inflicting harm to themselves or others.
DHF Technical Specification TS 001 In spite of the growing importance of this area of architectural ironmongery specification, there remains very little guidance or legislation to assist manufacturers or specifiers. A specification document, entitled Door Mounted Anti-Ligature Devices for Safety and Security Purposes, has been published by the Door & Hardware Federation in response to the growing need for this type of product. It includes a proposed classification of anti-ligature devices, test methods and grades of safety. Up to now, the tests have been mainly applied to hinges. Where applicable Orbis AntiLigature hardware conforms to the recommendations contained within the DHF document.
Reducing the risk of suicide by hanging The most recent studies show that suicide rates by hanging and suffocation have steadily increased since 1981 and are now the most prevalent methods of all suicides, accounting for 40% of the total figure(1). Research indicates that removing or reducing easy access to lethal methods of self harm is an effective way of preventing suicide. Throughout the UK, there are various initiatives to reduce this figure. In England, the target is a reduction of 20% by 2010; in Scotland the target is 20% by 2013. Approximately one quarter of suicide victims in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland had been in contact with mental health services in the year before death; this represents around 1,500 cases per year. In the report of the National Confidential Enquiry into Suicide(2), a number of recommendations were made in its ‘twelve points to a safer service’ including; ‘In-patient wards to remove or cover all likely ligature points, including all non-collapsible curtain rails’. References (1) National Suicide Prevention Strategy for England, Annual Report on Progress 2003 – Dec 2003. (2) SAFETY FIRST, Five-year Report of the National Confidential Inquiry into Suicide and Homicide by People with Mental Illness - March 2001.

ORBIS ANTI-LIGATURE – INTRODUCTION
The Laidlaw Orbis Anti-Ligature Range As a result of these recommendations, Laidlaw have introduced an innovative and broadranging group of anti-ligature door furniture, door closing and access devices that can be selected in a variety of combinations, depending on the level of security required. However, Laidlaw cannot guarantee that there will be no circumstances in which self-harm is possible.
Creating a safe, yet sympathetic environment. Laidlaw’s sympathetic designs include soft, rounded shapes that reduce the ligature points in a room whilst avoiding an institutional look. This makes the products particularly suitable for use in detention centres, young offenders institutions, hospitals, immigration centres and care centres, while providing the high security necessary in prisons, courts and mental health institutions.
Within the Orbis Anti-Ligature range we have a wide selection of products providing specifiers with a choice of styles and operating characteristics. Our door operating hardware solutions include a series of Locksets (as per examples above) which have been developed as a suite suitable for specific types of applications.
10 YEAR GUARANTEE Unless shown otherwise, all Laidlaw Orbis Anti-ligature products are subject to a 10 year guarantee against defects proved to be the result of faulty manufacture or defective materials

www.laidlaw.net
Laidlaw Orbis Anti-Ligature doorknob set The Laidlaw Anti-ligature doorknob set is designed for use on either standard mortice lockcases with centres of 72mm (or above). The key benefits of the knobset range are: A
A Lockcase with stainless steel Grade 316 forend with radiused end B Corrosion resistant chrome plated latch bolt reversible for left and right hand applications without the need to dismantle the lockcase C Finger grooves on knob to ensure easy operation
B
D
D A special low-resistance yet durable spring is used to ensure that the knob is easier to turn than would be the case with a standard lockcase C E
H
The deadbolt can be thrown and withdrawn from one or both sides as required depending on the cylinder selected. The cylinder to latch function enables the cylinder to withdraw the double throw deadbolt on the second turn of the cylinder and the latchbolt on the third turn, helping to ensure access
F Cylinder cloaked by escutcheon E F G
BS EN Performance standard Certain of the products within the Anti-ligature range have been developed specifically to meet or exceed the latest European Standards. CE Marking Where CE marking is permitted, items are marked with the CE icon. The CE classification is indicated against each item where this is appropriate. Testing Fire testing is an ongoing process with Laidlaw. Many of the Anti-ligature hardware items have been included in tests on timber fire doors up to 2 hours and on steel fire doors up to 4 hours. The icon indicates the item has been successfully included in fire tests. Dimensions All dimensions shown throughout this brochure are in mm.

ORBIS ANTI-LIGATURE – FEATURES & INSTALLATION
The importance of door thickness
Specifying products
The fundamental difference between anti ligature door hardware and standard door operating hardware is the importance of the door thickness. In a standard door hardware installation, the hardware will accommodate relatively large variations in door thickness using a standard spindle and fixings.
When specifying door operating products from the catalogue there are a number of aspects to consider;
In contrast, an anti ligature hardware set-up is less flexible as projections must be more strictly controlled and as a consequence hardware assemblies must be specified to suit a specific door thickness.
• Specify the correct model number according to the door thickness quoted. Specifying the correct door thickness is critical to achieving a correct installation • With Knobsets and Leversets remember to specify an appropriate lockcase and cylinder • Remember to specify the finish code after the item number - eg, 50.AL8.6SS7
Laidlaw anti-ligature knob set shows how the knob, rose and spindle are a fixed assembly on the inside face. Any adjustment for door thickness is only accommodated on the outside (staff side) knob.

The Orbis Timber Doorset solution The Laidlaw Orbis Anti-Ligature range is ideally integrated with Orbis Timber Doorsets. This allows doors and frames to be precisely machined to suit the hardware, thereby improving performance and consequently the durability and efficiency of the hardware. In addition, it allows doors, frames, architraves and factory-fitted ironmongery to be supplied from one source, ensuring on-site fitting of hardware is kept to a minimum, improving the finished quality of the installation and reducing the risk of on-site damage. ORBIS ANTI-LIGATURE – CASE STUDY Project: Newtown Hospital Worcester - Hadley PICU Client: Worcestershire NHS Mental Health Partnership Design team: The Design Büro – lead Helen Whinray
With its extensive experience of mental health interior design commissions as well as many others in traditional medical care, the Design Büro worked closely with Laidlaw Solutions to provide a variety of product solutions.
The project challenge was to design a high quality healing environment with a suitably robust envelope within the existing building fabric, ensuring that the therapeutic and operational environment was not compromised. The highly detailed interior involved the existing shell being entirely stripped out, ceiling heights raised, rooms widened and openings formed in order for break out spaces to be created. Blind spots were also eliminated to improve visibility throughout the unit.
63 Laminated Orbis Doorsets were supplied in Bio Oak, with frames, door lippings and glazing beads in American White Oak. As a psychiatric intensive care unit, anti-ligature door hardware was a key element of the specification and Orbis Knob Sets, Finger Grip Pull Handles and Lock Escutcheons, all in Silk Anodised Aluminium, met the required standards for lightly sprung lock cases and tamper-proof fixings. Other doors were fitted with electro-magnetic door operation to comply with fire safety, DDA and Approved Document M requirements, and with glazing in which key-operable louvre vision panels were fitted.

PRIMARY & SECONDARY BARRICADE PROTECTION Orbis Anti-Ligature mortice locksets have been designed specifically with safety in mind. The lockcase used on each Mortice Lockset is designed with a unique mechanism to give priority to key holders from outside to minimise the risk of the lock being held in the locked position by holding the inside turn handle. However, in spite of this safety feature the mortice locksets have additional safety features which assist staff in maintaining the safety and security of the facility and its occupants.
The lockcases used on all Orbis Anti-Ligature mortice locksets shown on pages 14 to 16 are CE marked and have been classified in accordance with BS EN 12209.
Primary Barricade Protection The Primary Barricade feature ensures access can be gained by use of the external key operation at all times. In general use the turn and pull handles on the outside and inside of the door are designed to provide sufficient grip to operate the door but will not allow the attachment of a ligature. External or staff side pulls provide higher levels of grip but to counteract the possibility of the door being held closed (barricade situation) from the inside, staff can slot a full pull handle over the outer pull to provide maximum grip to overcome the inside turn handle being pulled. A Secondary Barricade Over-ride Kit is available for emergency applications as shown on page 24.
Secondary Barricade Protection For some applications, particularly bathroom locksets, where the lock incorporates a deadbolt for privacy, the lockset is designed in such a way as to allow partial disassembly of the lockset from outside to allow staff to open the door in an emergency. This Secondary Barricade Function incorporates a kit which allows speedy removal of the outer lock function plate and an emergency ‘key’ which will operate the bolt mechanism by removal of the outside indicator. A ‘slide-over’ pull handle provides staff with extra pull to overcome the door being held by the inside turn handle. A Secondary Barricade Over-ride Kit is available for emergency applications as shown on page 24.
Opposite - Removal of the outer plate allows access to the bathroom turn spindle which can be operated with a socket key.

TECHNICAL ADVICE
Cylinders for Mortice Locksets
Single Cylinder
60/70/80
10 30/35/40
Ranges of cylinders are available for use with Orbis Anti-ligature Mortice Locksets which can suite with Orbis Premier, Orbis Commercial or Centurion hardware ranges. These cylinders can form part of a masterkey system.
Door Preparation and Installation Correct installation of Orbis Anti-Ligature hardware is critical for the hardware to function correctly in order to preserve the safety of the vulnerable people who will use it on a daily basis. It is therefore essential that all those individuals who are are charged with specifying, installing and maintaining the hardware accept the appropriate level of responsibility to ensure the correct performance of the product is achieved in practice. As with any other craft based task, accurate preparation of the doorset (or window in the case of window fittings) is crucial to achieving a well installed product. No matter how diligent the fitter of the hardware, a poorly prepared door will result in an inefficient or ineffective product.
Factory preparation of doors is recommended to ensure perfect alignment of holes

Specification advice The dimensions shown above are recommended overall cylinder lengths. The figure in brackets is the maximum length of cylinder suitable for this door thickness. We suggest you contact us before specifying these cylinders.
Installation problems can be avoided by: • Factory preparation of doors. Orbis doorsets can be fully pre-prepared and in some cases, with non- projecting hardware factory fitted • Ensuring hardware is specified correctly to suit the door thickness. This ensures fixings and spindles (in the case of operating hardware) are supplied accordingly. • Ensuring cylinders where appropriate, are specified in the correct length to suit the door thickness • Quality preparation work is carried out when retro- fitting in place of existing locks • Ensuring the gap between door and frame is between 3mm and 7mm
Correctly prepared doors with accurate alginment of fixing bolt holes to ensure trouble free operation
Badly prepared doors will inevitably lead to poorly fitting and poorly performing door hardware.
Installation and Maintenance Accurate installation and carrying out routine checks on your hardware is essential in ensuring that it continues to function properly and to maintain the high quality finish. The following simple advice on maintenance procedures should be carried out to all Orbis Anti-Ligature door and window products: • • • • • •
The tamper proof fixings supplied with these products are an integral element in the safety of the product and they must not be substituted for standard fixing screws or bolts The use of power drivers with tamper proof fixings is not recommended as there is a risk of damaging the tamper proof head During installation and periodically thereafter, check that fixings remain tight and that there is no undue movement in any of the hardware. Remember, a loose item of hardware could become a ligature point Ensure that all latches and bolts operate freely without requiring undue pressure to operate them All items should be regularly cleaned using a soft cloth and a non-abrasive mild soap solution All movable products should also be lubricated at no more than 3 monthly intervals using any proprietary brand of aerosol applied petroleum distillate (e.g WD40). Ensure any excess lubricant is removed from the surface of products using a soft cloth
Please note: Oil and carborundum based lubricants MUST NOT be used under any circumstances. 26 www.laidlaw.net
