Karen Rott to join Rancho Bernardo Hall of Fame BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Community volunteer Karen Rott will become the 101st Rancho Bernardo Hall of Fame inductee. She will be recognized at the Hats Off to Volunteers event on April 21 in Webb Park and at a RB Hall of Fame dinner in Bernardo Heights Country Club on May 26. KAREN ROTT “It’s a very special honor, but I’d like to say that mostly it was only made possible by
the volunteers who were always there to help,” Rott said. “I feel the volunteers should be honored. I was very fortunate to be able to serve on the board of the Rancho Bernardo Historical Society and board of the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation. “Both I feel are a team of volunteers trying to get the job done,” Rott added. To be selected, inductees must complete at least six years worth of volunteer service in the community, including three in a leadership role that result in significant contributions to Rancho Bernardo. Rott is being recognized for her lead-
ership in the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation and Rancho Bernardo Historical Society. “It was the easiest decision and vote that the Hall of Fame has had for years,” said 1993 inductee Bob Wells, whose nomination of Rott was supported by 1998 inductee Nick Anastasopoulos and 2000 inductee Ted Gaasch. “Karen is an absolute jewel for this community,” Wells said. “She has been a very good president of the historical society and community foundation.” Rott and her husband, E Don, moved to Rancho Bernardo from Texas in See FAME, Page A21
The first debate among three of the five District 3 county supervisor candidates got heated Tuesday in Rancho Bernardo, with each challenging the others’ records, comments and associations. The debate hosted by the Conservative Order for Good Government started smoothly, with Republicans Steve Danon and Carl Hilliard, and Democrat Dave Roberts sharing their views about the $5 million fund county supervisors spend annually at their discretion for community endeavors, proposed high speed rail project slated to come down Interstate 15 in North County, plans to reduce homelessness and methods to make the county more business friendly. However, it was Danon who took the first verbal shot at Roberts, saying he will not need a “blue ribbon commission” to guide him in order to make a difference in the county. Roberts responded with a challenge to Danon’s claim the county’s permit process takes five to seven years, a delay that caused Sapphire See DEBATE, Page A12
