RANCHO BERNARDO SALUTES ITS VOLUNTEERS — The Hats Off to Volunteers honorees gathered for a group picture following the April 21 ceremony in Webb Park. Chairman Nick Anastasopoulos called it a “fantastic event,” adding, “I was thrilled to see so many people.” He estimated that around 300 came to the third annual event hosted by the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation. When RB’s violence rate is compared to the city’s 122 other neighborhoods (ranking is lowest to highest) it came in 17th place, with .85 violent crimes per 1,000 residents. In 2010 it came in 15th place, with .89 per 1,000 residents. The citywide violent crime rate in 2011 was 3.7 per 1,000 residents. In 2010 it was 4.21. As for property crimes, there were 455 last year, down from 513 reported in 2010. There were 75 residential burglaries (down from 78 in 2010), 48 commercial burglaries (down from 76), 279 thefts (a decrease from 302 in 2010) and 53 auto thefts (57 the year before). Compared to other city neighborhoods, Rancho Bernardo came in 14th place with 10.18 property crimes per 1,000 residents in 2011. The year before, it was in 12th place with 11.98 property crimes per
1,000 residents, so the rate declined by 1.8. The citywide rate in 2011 was 21.59 property crimes per 1,000 San Diegans. In 2010 it was 23.05. There were fewer car prowls reported as well. In these property might or might not have been taken, so these are reported separately from property crimes and not included in crime index. In Rancho Bernardo, there were 153 car prowls reported last year, 54 fewer than the 207 reported in 2010. This led to RB placing 44th when compared to other city neighborhoods, with 3.42 car prowls per 1,000 residents reported in 2011. The citywide rate was 5.4 per 1,000. In 2010, Rancho Bernardo placed 49th with 4.83 car prowls per 1,000 residents. The citywide rate was 6.77. See CRIME, Page A22
