Candace Bussjaeger, Sandra Morin, Minette Abelgas and Brittany Ball are planning an Aug. 5 fundraiser for Poway’s proposed new health center.
Nursing students plan health center fundraiser BY EMILY SORENSEN Four nursing students have turned a class project into a major fundraising event for the Martin and Delia Gold Health Center, which is trying to raise $3 million to build the center. National University nursing students Minette Abelgas, Brittany Ball, Candace Bussjaeger and Sandra Morin, all in their last four months of school, have come together to plan and host a fundraiser at the Poway Fun Bowl 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5. As part of their community health class, the women had to pick a community and assess its needs. Choosing Poway because it was close to their Rancho Bernardo school campus, it was clear that after asking around, what the community felt Poway was lacking was affordable health care. “There’s a lack of affordable health care in the community,” said Bussjaeger. “People have
to drive to Escondido or Ramona, and then usually can’t be seen.” They were also surprised to learn about the Martin and Delia Gold Health Center — and how unaware the community seemed to be about it. “I was really surprised at how many people in Poway are not aware of the clinic,” said Bussjaeger. After learning about the center’s struggle to raise funds for construction, the students decided to try and raise $5,000 toward the costs. “We wanted to do something fun and kidfriendly,” said Bussjaeger of the decision to have a bowling fundraiser at the Poway Fun Bowl. “There’s so much to offer at the bowling alley.” Despite having no experience with organizing such a large event, they have been busy with calls and making deals. “There’s just four of us,” said Morin, “so it’s fairly difficult to SEE HEALTH, Page 14

Plans for the Poway Days Parade, now in its 48th year, are moving forward in a positive way with the selection of the grand marshal and honorar y grand marshal. The parade will be held this year Saturday, Sept. 8. This year’s theme is “Always Positive in Poway,” and reflects the Poway Community Association’s partnership with the Always Positive foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that seeks “to inspire people to be positive and motivate them to do something positive,” according to Bob Rusch, co-founder of Always Positive. The parade will be followed by a food-packing event, organized by Rusch and Always Positive. In reflecting the theme and partnership, this year’s grand marshal is former Charger John Carney, cofounder of Always Positive and one of San Diego’s favorite athletes. Carney played with the Chargers for 11 seasons, from 1990 - 2000, and is the team’s all-time leading scorer, with 2,062 points. He
JOHN CARNEY was named to the Chargers 50th Anniversar y Team in 2009. Always Positive isn’t Carney’s first experience with charity, as he ser ved with “Kick Start for Kids” for 10 years, raising over $1 million so children with physical deformities can have plastic surger y. When he signed with the New Orleans Saints, he brought “Kick Start for Kids” with him, and held a holiday shoe-shopping event for underprivileged youngsters called “John Carney’s Holiday Kicks for Kids,” and also teamed up with Catholic Charities for a Superdome SEE PARADE, Page 14
