Around 10,000 North County residents are expected to get their first inside look at the new Palomar Medical Center this Saturday. The free preview, set for 4-9 p.m. Saturday, July 28, will include self-guided tours, technology demonstrations, free refreshments, free health screenings, children’s activities and exhibits to celebrate the completion of the region’s “Hospital of the Future,” as the 11-story, 740,000-square-foot, 288-patient bed facility has been dubbed by Palomar Health officials. The hospital is at 2185 W. Citracado Parkway in Escondido. On-site event parking will be limited to disabled guests. Free off-site parking and shuttle will be available. For locations, go to www.PalomarHealth.org/opening. “This is our grand celebration,” said Gerald Bracht, the new Palomar Medical Center’s
chief administrative officer. “We want the people who live in the communities that we serve to come and see their new hospital. It’s the only opportunity they’ll have to tour the building and see the areas before they become off-limits to the public.” Starting at 7 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 19, a carefully orchestrated switch will occur when Palomar Health relocates its emergency department and trauma center, according to hospital officials. At that time, around 135 patients will be moved from the original Palomar Medical Center at 555 E. Valley Parkway in Escondido. Bracht said there “is not expected to be any gap in service. We’re coordinating with 911 ... and assume there will be a smooth transition.” Dr. Jaime Rivas, emergency department medical director, called the new and larger ER “stunning” in terms of its layout and See HOSPITAL, Page 24
Honorary mayor candidates out peddling votes BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK The annual Rancho Bernardo honorary mayor contest is getting into full swing, with just a month left for its two candidates to get locals to buy votes supporting their favorite. Terry Klinker and Scott Lawn will each hold one campaign party in August, though they will continue to solicit backers and sell tickets through their respective businesses until the winner is announced at the annual Savour RB on Aug. 28. Also at that time tickets will be pulled, naming the purchasers as grand prize recipients. They need not be present. Savour RB, the Rancho Bernardo Business Association’s food tasting event, will be held at the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo, a
change in venue this year order to accommodate the ever-growing number of attendees and participating restaurants. Each candidate is selling tickets — one for $5 or six for $25. The one who raises the most money between the contest’s start on June 3 at the RB Alive! Expo and Savour RB will be declared the winner, given the title of honorary mayor and expected to participate in RBBA and community events, including Rancho Bernardo’s upcoming 50th anniversary celebration in September. The runner-up will be named deputy honorary mayor and fill in when the titleholder is unavailable throughout the year. Proceeds will benefit the Miss Rancho See MAYOR, Page 13
