Concert or movie Saturday?

BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK After a spirited campaign, Scott Lawn has become Rancho Bernardo’s new honorary mayor. “I’m absolutely thrilled,” Lawn said, crediting his campaign committee for much of his success. “They did such a great job.” Lawn said the campaign, which began on June 3 at the RB Alive! Expo street fair and concluded Aug. 28 at Savour RB, taught him some lessons too. “The thing I learned ... was that I always think of a campaign as an individual (endeavor), but clearly it is not individual,” Lawn said. “Whether it is for charity or real government, it is definitely a team effort.” The honorary mayor contest has a charitable component. This is the second year it was organized by Rancho Bernardo Business Association, though it dates back to 1991 when Rancho Bernardo Chamber of Commerce — and later San Diego North Chamber of Commerce — ran the fundraiser contest. BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Those in 4S Ranch will have to make a choice if they want to attend one of two free entertainment offerings in local parks on Saturday night. Everyone is welcome to see “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax,” the final free movie shown at 4S Ranch Sports Park as part of San Diego County Parks and Recreations’ 2012 Summer Movies in the Park series. The rated PG animated film released earlier this year is about a 12-year-old boy searching for the thing that will help him win his dream girl. The endeavor includes learning the story of the Lorax. It features the voices of Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, Danny DeVito and Betty White. As an added bonus to this movie, the final of four shown in the 4S Ranch park this summer, parents can take photos of their youngsters with the Lorax and around 250 goodie bags will be distributed to children on a first-come basis, said Ray Shay, whose Shay Realtors See CHOICE, Page 14

Poway Days Parade is Saturday BY STEVE DREYER There will be no shortage of family fun events this month as the 50th annual Poway Days kicks off Saturday with a big parade and community service project. An estimated 100 entries, including all five local high school marching bands, will proceed down Poway Road starting at 9 a.m. The parade begins at Pomerado Road and will head east to its conclusion at Bowron Road. Included will be floats, youth and church groups, and equestrian units along with dignitaries, pageant queens and political candidates waving from passing cars.

The theme of this year’s parade, put on by the Poway Community Association, is “Always Positive About Poway.” The grand marshal is former San Diego Chargers place kicker John Carney. The honorary grand marshal is Phil Harris from Family & Friends Community Connection. More than 120 volunteers will be on hand to help organize the parade and keep it running smoothly. It should conclude about 10:30 a.m. A large food-packing event, conducted by Family & Friends Community Connection, will run from 11 a.m. to about 5 p.m. in the parking lot of the Poway Walmart store on ComSee PARADE, Page 14
