Latest (and last?) housing project opens next month BY PAT KUMPAN Brighton Place — Poway’s likely final affordable housing project — will be ready for its occupants by early next month. Workers have been putting finishing touches on the $20.4 million development in the Old Poway Park area — 77 two-story, craftsman-style townhomes, walkways and a tot lot for kids, among other amenities. The project was funded by a grant from the Federal

Home Loan Bank, a mortgage from California Community Reinvestment Corporation and a private equity reinvestment. The development was also made possible through a long-term ground lease from the Poway Redevelopment Agency, which will become a defunct agency, effective Feb. 1, following a recent California Supreme Court ruling. A Town Hall meeting next Thursday will be a community discussion about juvenile drug and alcohol use in Poway, according to its organizers. The meeting, intended for teens and adults, will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19 at Templar’s Hall, 14134 Midland Road in Old Poway Park. The Rotary Club of Poway, along with the Poway Community Leadership Institute, are sponsoring the event, according to PCLI Director Steve Vaus, who spearheaded the meeting. Licensed drug and alcohol treatment counselors will be attending, and a video of local teens talking candidly about substance abuse will be shown. Vaus said he was prompted to organize the meeting after learning what he considers “alarming” statistics about the frequency of juvenile arrests in connection with drug and alcohol use in Poway.

“In 2010 and 2011 on average in Poway there was a juvenile arrest related to drugs and alcohol every other day, 367 in all,” said Vaus, quoting Sheriff’s Department statistics. “Clearly we have a problem and it can only be solved by involving the entire community,” he added. “This isn’t a ‘go to hear what the leaders have to say’ kind of meeting,” Vaus said. “This meeting will allow Poway residents to be heard and to give them a voice in how to tackle the problem.” Poway Unified School District board members, PUSD school representatives, City Council members and others have been invited, as well as community leaders and organizations, Vaus said. He added, “I’m optimistic this community conversation will be a catalyst for change.” For more details, contact Vaus at 858-2543633, or send him an e-mail at stevevaus@cox. net. Additionally, comments about the meeting can be read at Poway Town Hall Meeting/ Facebook.
