Drivers troll for lowest gas prices

Drivers found themselves trolling Main Street looking for the lowest gasoline prices as the average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gas set records in the past week.

Prices in Ramona on Monday ranged from a high of $5.09 per gallon for self-serve regular gasoline to a low of $4.73.

Countywide the average was $4.725, an increase of 1.3 cents over the previous day, an indication the upward trend may be leveling.

Monday’s increase was the smallest during a sixday span that saw the price spike 54.7 cents, including 3.8 cents on Sunday, according to AAA and Oil Price Information Service.

The average price set records for three consecutive days and on Monday was 56.3 cents more than a week earlier, 56.6 cents higher than a month ago, and 92.7 cents more than a year ago.

The Ramona foundation, an affiliate of the San Diego Foundation, made the presentations in the Ramona Library Community Room after an estimated 70 guests sampled wine from Ramona vintners and were treated to catered hors d’oeuvres.

County to repave Wildcat Canyon Road The county plans to re-pave Wildcat Canyon Road from Vista Vicente Road to around mile marker 11, Ramona resident Frank Coakley, with ATP, told the Ramona Community Planning Group at its Oct. 4 meeting.

ATP, a full-service asphalt paving contractor in Chula Vista, was awarded the project by the county and will completely remove the asphalt and repave it with rubberized asphalt, Coakley said. The project is estimated to begin

near the end of October.

Coakley asked the RCPG to approve his recommendation that the work be accomplished at night for less disruption to traffic and for safety reasons. He estimated the project would take four nights to complete and said the public would be alerted before the work begins.

The planning group approved the request.

Member Torry Brean recused himself and Kevin Wallace abstained.

Jennifer McSparran: County Teacher of the Year Jennifer McSparran, special education teacher at Mt. Woodson Elementary School, took center stage Saturday evening as one of five San Diego County Teachers of the Year.

McSparran, in her 12th year of teaching in Ramona Unified School District, received the honor during the televised “Salute to Teachers,” held in Balboa Theatre in downtown San Diego and presented by Cox Communications and the San Diego County Office of Education.

In an email to all district employees on Sunday, RUSD Superintendent Dr. Robert

Graeff sent “a royal congratulations” to McSparran.

“Representing 26,000 teachers from San Diego County, Jennifer will spend the next year advocating for public education at a variety of important gatherings and move forward into the statewide—and perhaps national—competition of teachers in California,” Graeff said in his email.

“I’m so honored and proud to represent Mt. Woodson Elementary and think each teacher at Mt. Woodson could have been on that stage Saturday evening,” McSparran said in her classroom on

McSparran considers a successful classroom “one where all students are motivated and able to learn, regardless of social-economic status, ethnicity, or disability.”

“It is my hope the I can instill my enthusiasm for learning in every student so that they, too, become lifelong learners,” she stated when asked for her philosophy of teaching.

As Ramona Teacher of the Year, she became eligible to be considered for County Teacher of the Year. Two years ago, the Santee resident also was honored as a California Distinguished School Primary Writer.

“Mrs. McSparran’s influence in the education of Mt. Woodson students reaches well beyond our special education students,” Mt. Woodson Principal Theresa Grace said when the district announced its selection of McSparran as Teacher of the Year. “She has been instrumental in the development of our highly effective Response to Intervention Program, Student Assistance Team process, and our current Turn Around Schools initiative. Judge drops burglary charges against two adults, orders trials on receiving stolen property charges

By NEAL PUTNAM A judge dismissed burglary charges against two adult suspects on Oct. 3, but he also ordered them to stand trial on receiving stolen property charges involving the “hot prowl” burglary series in Ramona.

El Cajon Superior Court Judge William McGrath said he dismissed the burglary counts against Skylor Rocky McGee, 19, and Garrett Paul Jackson, 18, because they didn’t enter people’s homes themselves.

According to testimony, McGee and Jackson either acted as a driver or a helper for juvenile suspects who actually entered people’s homes at night and took wallets, cellphones, and other items while the residents were sleeping.

McGee will go on trial Nov. 19 on a single count of receiving stolen property. Jackson’s trial is set for Dec. 10.

Both pleaded not guilty after their separate preliminary hearings before the same judge.

Jackson was also ordered to stand trial for using someone else’s credit card to buy gasoline from Stars Gas Station, as well as receiving stolen property, heroin possession, and possession of Valium without a prescription.

McGee is free on his own recognizance, and Jackson remains free on $50,000 bond. Deputy District Attorney Shanish Aloor said after the hear-

ing that no decision has been made yet as to whether his office would refile the burglary charges against both Ramona men.

During both hearings, the first names of two juvenile suspects were referred to as Austin and Kurt and they have apparently been charged in Juvenile Court in San Diego. Their names are not public record and the status of their cases could not be confirmed.

Michele Linley, the chief of the juvenile division of the DA’s office, said Friday she cannot disclose anything about it because juvenile proceedings are “confidential by nature.” She said the emphasis is on rehabilitation and not punishment.

“Under the law, I can’t disclose whether there is a case pending,” said Linley. “I can’t confirm or deny there is a case.”

Linley also said she cannot confirm or deny the number of juveniles who may be prosecuted for the Ramona burglaries. In general, Linley said juvenile offenders often are considered wards of the court and frequently are given probation with custody in juvenile camps or facilities. Linley said the issues in Juvenile Court revolve around “what’s going on in that minor’s life.”

Randolph Raines testified he woke up at 4:15 a.m. on June 20 and noticed his pants “weren’t where I left them.”

He found his pants in the entry way of

his home and his wallet was missing from a pocket.

Raines said he realized “something was drastically wrong.” He said his wife’s wallet was missing along with two cameras, a flashlight, cash, identification, and a 3-inch knife.

Raines told McGrath he discovered the burglar had entered through a bay window that was open, and the security screen was bent. He said the wallets and cellphone were found in some bushes about a block away.

Sheriff’s Detective Thomas Seiver said Raines’ credit cards were used at Stars Gas Station, a Circle K store, and a taco shop in Ramona just hours later.

He said security cameras showed two men filling two gas cans without a vehicle.

Seiver said there were 23 “hot prowl burglaries” that were investigated by the sheriff’s department from January to June this year that also included car break-ins.

A truck license plate was revealed in a security camera and the registered owner was McGee’s mother, Seiver said. He said a search of the truck yielded two cameras and a knife that were missing from the Raines’ residence.

Additionally, a credit card receipt from Raines’ card in a taco shop purchase was found in McGee’s truck, said Seiver. McGee was arrested June 23,

but he denied going inside Raines’ residence, he added.

Seiver testified he spoke to a juvenile defendant named Austin who admitted committing the Raines’ burglary. Austin said McGee remained in the truck as a driver, and he came back from Raines’ home with stolen property.

Attorney Olivia Gilliam, who represents McGee, argued in favor of dismissing the burglary charge because it was the juvenile who did the actual burglary. The prosecutor argued unsuccessfully that McGee was an aider and abettor by being the driver.

In Jackson’s hearing, Tina Hayes testified she woke up on June 3 at 6 a.m. and discovered someone had come into her home via a back door that she thought had been locked. “My purse was missing. The back door was open and I knew something was up,” said Hayes.

Her husband’s briefcase was gone, and her iPhone, medications, wallet, and $40 were missing, she said.

Someone used her credit cards and stole a gift card.

About 10 days later, Hayes said a woman found her wallet and driver’s license on a dirt road.

Matthew Manning, who works at Stars Petroleum, said he saw some people pumping gas into gas cans on security camera footage.

He wrote down a license plate number of a white Cadillac that he saw nearby.

Sheriff’s Deputy Daniel Harrison testified he searched Jackson’s home and arrested him June 23 after finding a small amount of heroin in aluminum foil and three Valium pills for which he didn’t have a prescription.

Seiver testified he talked to Jackson, who told him that two juvenile suspects “were bragging about committing some burglaries.” He said Jackson admitted to carrying gas cans to help one juvenile get gasoline.

Seiver said Jackson denied committing the Hayes burglary or pawning stolen property. He found no stolen property at Jackson’s home.

Jackson’s attorney, Charles Quirk, argued that his client didn’t personally use any stolen credit card and did not burglarize any home.

The judge agreed to dismiss the burglary charge, but ordered him to stand trial for helping the minor get gasoline on a credit card and other charges.

RHS teacher puts district’s first iTunes U course online RHS is first public school in California on iTunesU

By JESSICA KING Making up missed course work is a little bit easier these days for students enrolled in Ramona High’s digital photography class, thanks to the district first-ever iTunes U offering.

Regional Occupational Program instructor Tim Hall went “live” with the offering over the summer.

It consists of students being able to use any iPad, iPhone, or iPod with an Apple IOS operating system to download the free iTunes U app and search it for Hall’s class.

Keith Wright, director of Information and Education Services for the Ramona school district, said Ramona High is the first public school in the state to put a courts on iTune U. “Cathedral High (a private school in San Diego) beat us by one month,” said Wright.

Once the class is found

and downloaded, students can view lecture PowerPoints, get copies of worksheets handed out in class, and get other important class updates.

“It comes in really handy, especially if you have a student who’s out ill or a student who has to be absent for sports,” said Hall, noting the students can view the lessons they miss before they return to class, without missing a beat.

Hall, a Navy photographer-turned-photojourn a l i s t - t u r n e d - t e a ch e r, freely admits his venture into iTunes U was a bit of a fluke. He wanted to help fellow Ramona High teacher Cory McDonald record her math lessons for her students, who have access to iPads in class.

McDonald is one of a handful of teachers throughout the district who regularly use iPads in their classes. Hall’s students do

The benefits of iTunes U also extend into the community-at-large, because Hall’s class offering is broken into two sections: the course, to which he has to approve access, and the collection, which is free and open to the public.

While the course section is designed specifically for Hall’s students who are working toward credit for the class, the collection serves as a reference for anyone looking to learn digital photography.

The collection includes the same information Hall teaches his students, including history about photography and how a camera works.

“If someone not in my class followed closely, they will end up with a pretty basic knowledge of what photography is,” said Hall.

Questions remain about emergency evacuation route

By KAREN BRAINARD An emergency evacuation route for Ramona will not be finalized by the Ramona Municipal Water District next week, according to staff, even though the route is listed on the County Board of Supervisors’ Oct. 9 meeting agenda.

RMWD General Manager David Barnum said he did not receive the proposed route’s draft legal agreement from the county in time to place it on the water board’s Oct. 9 meeting agenda.

Bryan Wadlington, president of the RMWD board of directors, said the district still has concerns over liability. He noted that, since the proposal was discussed last year, both the water district and the county have new attorneys involved. “We have a fiduciary responsibility to the citizens that we are not liable for any mishaps on that property,” he said. “I, too, would like to see it get done.”

The proposed emergency evacuation route, which would cut through the county’s Grassland Preserve and RMWD’s Santa Maria Wastewater Reclamation Plant property to connect to Rangeland Road and eventually lead to state Route

67, was the focus of a meeting at Supervisor Dianne Jacob’s office on Sept. 27.

Representatives of the Ramona Community Planning Group, water district, and other agencies attended the meeting. Jacob requested the route be placed on the Oct. 9 agendas of the board of supervisors and the water district.

Because there were concerns about utility poles along the designated area on the Santa Maria site, Rick Gardner from San Diego Gas & Electric proposed the utility add lights to the poles.

At the planning group’s Oct. 4 meeting, Chair Jim Piva reported that SDG&E offered to install shielded amber low-pressure sodium lights along three poles, one near Rangeland Road and the gated entrance of Highland Hills. Lt. James Bovet of the sheriff’s Ramona substation said each light would only shine down on the property beneath it. “It’s about as minimal impact as we could have,” he said.

The planning group approved sending a letter to thank SDG&E for the lights.

Member Kevin Wallace opposed, expressing concern that the lights will always be on at night.

Matthew Hedge living as transient In early 2009, state considered moving sexually violent predator to Ramona A man who seven years ago became the first sexually violent predator from Atascadero State Hospital to be released into San Diego County was living as a transient in the Lemon Grove and Spring Valley areas, authorities report.

Matthew Harvey Hedge’s sexually violent predator designation was lifted by a court in late September, and he no longer is required to wear a tracking device and “is free to live and go anywhere,” the Sheriff’s Department reported in a public notice.

However, the 49-yearold ex-con still must notify local law enforcement of his whereabouts every 30 days. In November 2005, Hedge was released into the San Diego area after completing a post-incarceration behavior-modification treatment program.

He was located to a trailer on the grounds of Donovan State Prison in Otay Mesa.

Two months later, he was returned to Atascadero after violating terms of

his outpatient program by speaking to two girls at a local treatment center, lying to counselors and admitting to having had a deviant sexual fantasy involving a child.

In early 2009, California Department of Mental Health attempted to move Hedge to a 3,750-squarefoot house in the 3300

block of Highway 67 in Ramona, less than a mile from an elementary school, two preschools, a Sunday School, and at least two school bus stops.

The community, including the homeowner, protested, and the state canceled its efforts.

Hedge was convicted in 1989 of molesting two boys and two girls. He served a prison term, then was sent to the state mental hospital for treatment.

Megan’s Law permits law enforcement agencies to advise the public about the presence of sex offenders in communities as a means of helping residents protect themselves and their children from potential harm.

“This notification (about Hedge) is not intended to induce fear,” the sheriff’s advisory stated. “Rather, it is our belief that an informed community is a safer community.”

Motorist pleads not guilty to DUI in head-on crash that injured two

By NEAL PUTNAM A Ramona motorist faces an Oct. 16 preliminary hearing on charges he drove under the influence of alcohol in a Sept.

27 head-on crash that injured a father and daughter.

John Ryan Mantz, 21, has pleaded not guilty to the charges that also allege he was driving with a suspended driver’s license in the 8:10 p.m. collision at Ramona Oaks and San Vicente roads.

The Ford F-150 truck Mantz was driving crashed into a Hyundai driven by

Paul Stevens, and his 9-year-old daughter, Cheyenne Stevens, of Ramona.

All three were taken to a hospital to treat injuries. It is alleged that Mantz inflicted great bodily injury to the father and daughter.

California Highway Patrol said the truck veered across the divided section about 50 mph when it struck the Hyundai, which was traveling at approximately 30 mph.

El Cajon Superior Court Judge Charles Ervin set bail at $100,000. Mantz remains in the George Bailey Detention Facility.

Consider a No vote on Proposition R

By J. DYER Once again the public school bureaucracy is asking us for more of our money. Instead of prioritizing their needs and putting their generous funding to better use, they want more.

They imply their efforts are all about the children, but it is really all about the bureaucracy.

They want to redistribute your wealth into their pockets so they don’t have to make too many changes to the system. I suggest we require them to redistribute the wealth they already have received from us and put that redistribution toward the children and facilities placed in their care.

The school district recently sent out a political flyer supporting Proposition R. The flyer boasted of district awards and performance. I called the school district office to see if I

Commentary could get clarification on the statistics they put in the flyer. I wanted to know more about test scores, more about the awards they claimed to receive, and I wanted to hear from them directly why they felt more money was the solution to their problems. I left a message asking them to call me to discuss this information. I received no call back.

I went to the California Department of Education website to see if I could check their assertions. According to the political flyer, the Ramona school district (this includes nine schools) received several awards. What you did find on the website is that a few of the schools in the district were recognized for some type of accom-

plishment or potential for accomplishment over the last several years. It does not appear that all schools were recognized for merit.

By the flyer’s own admission, 25 percent of the district schools don’t seem to meet the minimum scores the state considers acceptable.

According to the California Department of Education website, the Ramona school district appears to get over $8,000 per year per student. You can buy a lot of quality private education for that high price tag, and that private education would not have to include the contemporary socialist and politically correct propaganda required in public school education. Do you really want your property taxed another $100 to $300 (or more) each year to give an average performing bureaucracy more money?

If you are a renter, you don’t escape the tax increase. All residents will have their housing costs increased if Proposition R passes. Please don’t agree to another tax increase

on yourselves. You pay enough already!

Had they called me back, the district would have probably told me that their performance and infrastructure problems are caused by us not giving them enough money—as their flyer implies. I don’t believe it, and I don’t want to give hundreds of dollars more each year to a school district with a seemingly marginal performance record. Getting over $8,000/ year/student should be enough for all district schools to meet the minimum target scores and to maintain appropriate buildings and equipment.

The district needs to use its generous budget more prudently instead of asking us to give more from our personal budgets. The district is avoiding the difficult task of redirecting more of its ample funding to maintain a proper learning environment for students. They would rather you do the more difficult task of giving them more from your limited budgets.

Tell them you’ve given them enough.

This is the last of a three-part series related to Proposition R on the Nov. 6 ballot.

Just received Ramona school district’s flyer for Proposition R. They make it sound so rosy by saying that it will only cost property owners $5 a month per $100,000 assessed valuation.

It (the flyer) needs to be more to fact and state that if your property has an assessed valuation of $500,000 your taxes are going up $300 a year.

I do not know a lot about financing schools or the people on our school board. However, if we let our schools deteriorate to the point where roofs leak, our classrooms need repair and we borrowed $25 million and did not make provisions to repay the loan, the district should have new management.

It is my understanding that our school system is also on the verge of bankruptcy and on a county watch list.

A good well-managed school is basic.

A change in management is the first step to solving our problems.

I support the bond issue but I do not support the current board members or management that got us into the current fiscal mess.

By BOB GRAEFF When speaking of education, Benjamin Franklin said, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”

Ramona Unified School District is asking local voters to do just that — invest in Ramona schools by approving Proposition R on the November ballot.

Proposition R is the local school improvement proposition that, if approved, would upgrade, modernize, and renovate outdated classrooms and school buildings throughout the district.

The district certainly believes the investment is worth it.

“Everyone knows the importance and value of having quality schools. From higher achieving students to greater neighborhood safety and improved property values, quality schools make a difference,” says Arvie Degenfelder, co-founder of the Ramona Trails Association and a great-grandparent.

“We need to provide Ramona kids with the best chance for success,” adds Tony Newman, principal at Ramona High School.

According to the district, this means improved classrooms, updated technology, and a clean working environment.

Newman goes on to say, “Ramona kids deserve the same opportunities for education as those provided in our neighboring districts and the rest of the county.”

Currently those opportunities are not the same. Ramona Unified School District is the only unified school district in all of San Diego County that has not passed a school improvement proposition to upgrade its schools.

Passing Proposition R will go a long way toward improving local schools and the community. First, it will qualify the district to receive nearly $14 million in state matching grants to help pay for improvements. It will also improve the quality of education provided to Ramona

students by providing a better learning environment.

Any Realtor will tell you that good schools help to improve property values.

Good schools also mean greater community safety.

“We think that improved schools are a win for everybody,” adds Assistant Superintendent Cathy Pierce .

Apparently Pierce is not alone. Recently, both the San Diego Union-Tribune and the San Diego County Taxpayers Association (SDCTA) showed their support for Proposition R – including a full endorsement by the taxpayers association. These endorsements are no small feat considering SDCTA recently opposed and recommended a “no vote” on school district propositions offered in Alpine, Encinitas, South Bay, and San Diego, as well as the statewide school propositions 30 and 38.

So why did SDCTA endorse Proposition R? “Proposition R has met stringent San Diego County Taxpayers Association standards and contains tough safeguards to ensure funds are spent as promised,” writes Lani Lutar, president of San Diego County Taxpayers’ Association.

These standards include: 1) All funds must be spent locally and cannot be taken by the state; 2) By law, spending must be reviewed and annually audited by an independent citizens’ oversight committee; and 3) Funds can only be spent to improve Ramona schools, not for teacher or administrator salaries.

There may be another reason to invest in Ramona schools. Since the state continues to reduce funding for public education, voters can do more to protect the quality of education in their local schools.

Proposition R is the chance for Ramona voters to do more.

“Proposition R upgrades and renovates old and inadequate classrooms, enhance property values, and maintains the quality of our community,” states Degenfelder.

“I think that’s something we can all support.”

PALOMAR HEALTH CLINIC CONSTRUCTION—Construction of Palomar Health’s Ramona Ambulatory Care Center on 13th Street is slightly ahead of schedule, says Mike Shanahan, director of Palomar Health facilities planning. He provided an update to the Palomar Health Facilities and Grounds Committee on Oct. 1, reporting that the building was about 90 percent framed. Shanahan said residents will see a lot of progress this month. The clinic is expected to be completed in spring 2013.

Several thousand books from the estate of the late Jeanne Ghilbert will be among the selection at the Friends of Ramona Library’s monthly book sale on Saturday, Oct. 20.

Ghilbert, a longtime Ramona resident, died in July 2012. She and her husband Henri were strong advocates and supporters of the Ramona Library, notes Friends member and bookstore

manager Flo Firth. A memorial plaque for Henri Ghilbert is on the Friends’ bookstore window.

Last week Firth and other Friends’ bookstore volunteers brought the Ghilbert books to the bookstore.

“Some of these books were from as far back as 1895, some were first editions, some were foreign language books in French, German, and

Spanish,” said Firth.

Friends of Ramona Library operates a bookstore in Ramona lobby from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mondays through Saturdays. On the third Saturday of each month, the organization holds a book sale with even better prices.

Ramona Library is at 1275 Main St. The Friends bookstore is off the lobby near the library’s front entrance.

District seeks volunteers to tutor reading Teen center organizes park cleanup Ramona Unified School District and OASIS (Older Adult Service and Information System) are seeking older adult and parent volunteers to help a child experience the joy of reading. OASIS reading tutors are paired with students in grades one through three, one-on-one, once a week for an hour.

No teaching experience is necessary, “just a warm

heart and a desire to help a child experience the joy of reading.”

Training for the OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program is scheduled for Nov. 2 and 5, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. both days, in the district Board Room at 720 Ninth St. Oasis is a national, nonprofit, education organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for

mature adults.

Fire department invites public to Oct. 20 open house Taxpayers group files lawsuit Ramona Fire Department invites the public to its annual open house on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fire Station 80, 829 San Vicente Road.

The family event will feature a fire safety trailer, demonstrations, children’s activities, and up-close views of fire equipment, fire engines, and helicopters.

Disc jockey DJ Abarca will provide music at the event.

Fire Capt. Jose Ramirez noted that a fire safety trailer, mainly for children, will be new this year.

“I’m borrowing this one from the San Miguel Fire Department,” Ramirez said.

The trailer is a simulated house with a kitchen, living room, and bedroom. Firefighters will take children through and teach them home fire safety.

Demonstrations will include how to extinguish a stovetop grease fire and “jaws of life” rescues removing the roof and doors off a vehicle “to show how powerful the tools are.”

Among the many children’s activities will be a coloring contest, organized by the fire department and the West End Fire Safe Council.

Ramona Fire Department/Cal Fire will have five fire engines to view, and the Cleveland National Forest will bring two engines. About 15

on-duty Ramona/Cal Fire firefighters and 10 forest service firefighters are expected to participate.

Helicopters from Mercy Air, the forest service, and the county are scheduled to be on display.

Also participating will be Smokey Bear and representatives from California Highway Patrol, San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, Ramona Community Emergency Response Team, and San Diego Gas and Electric. Food will be available for purchase from Mi Ranchito.

Grange’s Harvest Festival has Food, Feathers & Fun theme Ramona Grange will hold its fourth annual Harvest Festival at Grange Hall, 215 Seventh St., on from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 20. Admission is free.

Crafters with unique items and gifts for early holiday shopping, food vendors, and games will be included.

Among activities will be Chicken Bingo and two crowing contests: one for children and one for adults. The crowing contest originally was for children, but it was so much fun adults wanted to enter.

Chicken Bingo, a country game, features a grid with numbers marked on the ground. Players choose a number.

A well-fed chicken is placed on the grid. If the chicken makes a “deposit”

on your number, you win. In addition to the outside activities, the Wild West Serama Club will hold a show inside the Grange Hall.

Seramas are the world’s smallest chickens. They stand straight like little soldiers and are tame. They come in many colors and have become popular as living lawn art. Exhibitors from all over the country will attend. A bird sales area and an opportunity drawing will be part of the show.

All profits from the festival go to the Grange and will be used to fund future backyard agriculture projects.

Ramona Grange’s mission statement is “Supporting agriculture, in Ramona, one backyard at a time.”

By KAREN BRAINARD The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association (HJTA) has filed a class action lawsuit to provide relief to nearly 1 million California property owners who received bills from the state for a new fire prevention fee that the lawsuit claims is illegal.

The class action complaint, filed Oct. 3 in Superior Court in Sacramento, seeks to overturn the fire fee, which costs property owners in state responsibility areas an additional $150 per year for each habitable structure on their property.

The Jarvis association is challenging the constitutionality of the fee on the grounds that it is really a tax that needed a two-thirds vote in the state Legislature to pass, but garnered only a bare majority and therefore never became law.

The complaint was filed against the California Department of Forestry, which was responsible for identifying owners of the parcels subject to the new fee, and against the Board of Equalization, the agency collecting the

fees. If the class action suit is successful, the association said approximately 825,000 homeowners could be eligible for refunds.

To be eligible for a refund, the association said property owners must first pay their bill, then file a protest with the state. HJTA has established a website, FireTaxProtest.org, that shows how to protest the fee and provides the forms. Property owners can also sign up for free email bulletins that will keep them informed of the progress of the class action suit.

“This tax was dreamed up by politicians in Sacramento who are so desperate for revenue that they were willing to ram this through the Legislature without the proper two-thirds vote,” said Jon Coupal, president of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association. “The fire tax is a direct violation of Prop. 13.

It is our goal to overturn this tax, prevent the politicians from taking more money from hardworking people for a program they were already paying for, and help taxpayers to get a refund from the government.”

Michael Gabriel Hallmann 1978 – 2012

Gabe Hallmann, 34, died at Scripps Mercy Hospital on Sunday, September 30, 2012.

He was born August 9, 1978, in Escondido, son of Michael Hallmann and Jennifer Hallmann. Gabe graduated from Ramona High School in 1997. He also graduated from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine as a licensed massage therapist.

Gabe was born and raised in Ramona and was an incredible athlete. He played soccer and baseball in

Ramona recreation leagues and traveling teams. He also played soccer, baseball and football at Ramona High.

Gabe loved spending time with his family and his work as a massage therapist.

Gabe will be especially remembered for the love and devotion he had for his soul mate, Nadia Ayadi, and their daughter, “Gabby”.

He was compassionate, thoughtful, caring, devoted, energetic, charismatic, bright, sensitive and always genuine. Gabe loved his family more deeply than most could comprehend.

His life was tragically taken from him and he will be profoundly missed by all who knew him. His family, however, takes comfort in knowing that he will enjoy eternal bliss and salvation as he is held in the arms of our Lord… until all are together again.

Gabe is survived by his parents, Michael Lee Hallmann of San Diego and Jennifer Hallmann of Ramona; three sisters, Claudia Shohara and Michelle Tucker of Ramona,

and Alice Parenti of Poway; brother, David Hallmann of Ramona; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2012, at 3pm at Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church, 1735 Main Street, Ramona, with a reception immediately following.

A Funeral Mass with be held at on Saturday, October 20, 2012, at 10:30am at St. Anne Catholic Church, 2337 Irving Avenue, San Diego.

Terrence Michael McNulty 1963 – 2012

Terrence McNulty, outdoorsman and land surveyor, passed away October 7, 2012, at his home in Oceanside, California, at the age of 49.

He is survived by his father, Michael; brothers, Byron and Kevin; sister, Christine; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many close friends.

Terry was born March 14, 1963, in Duarte, California, to proud parents, Michael and Shirley McNulty. The family lived in Arcadia, California, for several years before moving to Ramona in 1972. Terry was active in Scouting and was interested in all things military. He graduated from Ramona High in 1981 and attended UC Davis where he majored in biochemistry.

Terry worked for the family stucco business for several years until family friend and professional land surveyor, Alton Barron, introduced him to the land surveying trade. Eventually earning his Land Surveying

license, Terry worked for several of the close-knit San Diego area land surveying firms for years. He spent the last ten years as a surveyor with the County of San Diego.

He enjoyed hunting the high mountains of California and Colorado and fishing the deep blue waters of Baja, and he loved to tell the stories of the good times with his many close friends.

He was truly a unique character, and will be missed but always remembered by his family and friends.

Nine candidates on ballot for chamber director posts Nine businesspeople are candidates for the eight openings in the Ramona Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors election.

Ballots, mailed recently to all chamber members, are due in the chamber office no later than 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18. The winners will be announced at the chamber mixer at Ramona Disposal Service on Friday, Oct. 19.

Terms of the newly elected chamber directors will begin in January.

on Sunday directing the California Air Resources Board to allow oil refineries to make an early transition to winter-blend gasoline, which typically isn’t sold in California until Nov. 1, and the resumption of operations at ExxonMobil’s Torrance refinery are expected to add to the supply of gasoline.

The record prices are the result of whole markets going “into a panic about the adequacy of California fuel supplies” after

a power failure at the Torrance refinery and closure of a Chevron pipeline that moves crude oil to Northern California, said Jeffrey Spring of the Automobile Club of Southern California.

Prior to the incidents last Monday, refiners dropped production levels, exported supply to Mexico and other countries, and allowed inventory to dwindle in anticipation of switching to production of winter-blend gasoline, said Spring.

Hot Spots invites community to Novemberfest

rab the lederhosen and dirndls for the Hot Spots’ Novemberfest, an Evening in Bavaria, to raise money for the Intermountain Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department (IVFRD).

The festivities on Nov. 3 will be from 6 to 10 p.m. at Ramona Outdoor Community Center Pavilion, 421 Aqua Lane. Costumes, dinner, live entertainment, and an auction will all be part of the evening.

This is the ninth annual event for IVFRD’s Hot

Spots auxiliary. Each year the event has a different theme and draws hundreds of people. Event organizers say that this year’s gala will transform the Ramona outdoor pavilion into a Bavarian festival with food by John Little Catering. Costumes are encouraged.

According to the auxiliary, Intermountain fire department needs donations and community partners to meet the financial challenges of day-to-day costs for the all-volunteer firefighters and

Rotary presents dictionaries to each third-grader In what’s become an annual tradition, Ramona Rotarians visit third-grade classrooms to tell the students about the service organization and what it does in the community—but primarily to give each student a dictionary.

For the 11th year, Rotary clubs participating in the Dictionary Project donate an English dictionary to third-graders in their community. In Ramona, students whose second language is Spanish also receive a Spanish-to-English dictionary.

The Ramona club ordered 420 English

dictionaries and 120 Spanish-to-English dictionaries to distribute this year, said Amber Ramirez, Ramona Rotary member in charge of the project. Ramona Unified Superintendent Robert Graeff, also a Rotarian, helps coordinate the effort.

Cost to Ramona Rotary was approximately $964.

A Georgia woman started the Dictionary Project in 1992, when she gave 50 dictionaries to children attending a school near her Savannah home. The idea grew and organizations such as Rotary re-

fined them. The dictionaries belong to the students, and Ramona Rotary encourages them to use the reference book throughout their school career.

Since many homes do not have a dictionary, students may keep the book in their backpack and use it at home and in the classroom.

Third-graders are learning word and dictionary skills, a reason Rotary selected that grade level.

In Ramona, Rotarians present each

third-grader in Barnett, James Dukes, Ramona Community, Ramona, Mt. Woodson and Hanson elementary schools with his or her own Webster’s dictionary as early in the school year as possible.

Rotarians started presenting the dictionaries to Ramona third-graders last week and finished on Tuesday. Ramona Rotary Club holds luncheon meetings in Ramona Valley Grill at 344 Main St. at noon on Tuesdays. For membership information, contact Bob Vaughn at 760-789-6858.

50 orphans keep Ramona High graduate busy Editor’s Note: This is one in the Sentinel’s “Where Are They Now?” series about Ramona high school graduates—where they are and what they’re doing.

By REGINA ELLING Sometimes, former students don’t move that far away — yet, their experiences put them miles apart from their peers. Such is the case with Josh Wray, a 2010 Ramona High School graduate.

That’s because, while most young adults prefer to hang out with a select group of people their own age, Wray is spending his days surrounded by others, about 50 others. Ranging in age from 3 to 21 years, the youth are all orphans, living at Mision Mexico in Tapachula, Mexico.

Wray said the experience of working with the youngsters has taught him a great deal about patience, loving like a parent, and taking each experience as it comes.

“There are times when you go out of your way to make a certain kid’s day or simply clean their rooms or something like that, and they return your act of love and kindness with no respect or graciousness,” he said. “It’s hard, especially when your very reason for volunteering is to basically give the kids all you have, but they don’t care at

times.”

While most parents may be familiar with this attitude, it’s tough on a person just 19 years old. In response, Wray said he’s learned a great deal about himself.

“What can make your day is something as simple as a hug from one of the kids,” he said. And on those tough days, “I take

Wray said his experiences working in Ramona as a peer tutor and a lifeguard, and his involvement with the youth and children’s groups at Mountain View Community Church, helped prepare him to work with the kids.

He also said his parents, Jim and Tama Wray of Ramona, played a huge part

in his decision to volunteer at the orphanage.

“Everyone says that Mexico is this big, bad, dangerous place, but I had the OK from my parents to live down here from the get-go,” he said. “When I told them my idea of coming down here, without any hesitation they felt a peace about it. They did an amazing job of raising See JOSH WRAY on page 19

me, and I love them and am very thankful to them for investing so much in my life.”

Living with so many other people is an adventure in itself, and Wray laughed when he said, “Keeping almost 50 kids entertained for more than five minutes is impossible!” But with his typical happy-go-lucky attitude, he said, “I have learned how to talk, relate and reason with them I the best way that I can right now.”

Wray began volunteering at the end of August and, although his planned end date is mid-November, his experiences have been so positive he said he may stay longer.

One of the things he enjoys the most is the love surrounding Mision Mexico.

“The kids call the director, Pamela Skuse, ‘Mom’ every time they see her,” he said. “These are all kids from different families and very different backgrounds, but somehow they ended up here under the roof of a couple of people that love them as their own. It truly is a family here at the Mision, and I love it!”

Ramona SkillsUSA student earns third in nation

By PIXIE SULSER Third in the nation is an honor that Ramona High School senior Tyler Pavlick can add to his already extensive resume.

Pavlick, who grew up riding and working on motorcycles, earned third place win at the SkillsUSA Championship in Kansas City, Mo. The annual competition, which takes place in a space equal to 16 football fields and hosts approximately 5,000 contestants in 95 separate events, showcases the best career and technical students in the nation.

Pavlick earned his individual recognition in Motorcycle Service Technology after a 10-hour contest.

“Each competitor had to build a motorcycle motor from the bottom up,” he said. “We had two hours to complete the motor, but I finished in 45 minutes. I felt pretty confident because I had studied the manual they gave us the night before.”

The one thing he said he did that no one else did was wipe all the fingerprints off the chrome motor when he finished.

“When one of the judges asked me why I had done that, I said, ‘Doesn’t your company (Harley) believe that your workers should have good workmanship?’”

The judge told Pavlick that his extra attentiveness had just earned him another 10 points.

“I think that was the difference between third and fourth,” said Pavlick.

In addition to bringing home a national title, Pavlick earned tools, scholarship money, a Harley jacket, and a Harley motor for the school. All total, from Palvick’s competitions over the past two years, he has earned approximately $70,000 in scholarship monies to technical schools such as Universal Technical Institute (UTI) and Wyotech.

He always strives to be the best.”

Because of his background riding and working on motorcycles, participating in auto classes when he became a freshman at RHS was a natural progression. When he isn’t working on motors at school, he can be found fixing motorcycles at KTM in Ramona or in his own garage after hours working on projects for family and friends.

“I work six days a week at KTM, and then spend several hours a night working on my personal stuff,” said Pavlick.

After graduation in June, this enterprising senior plans to take advantage of his scholarships, although his specific plans are still in the planning stages. His ultimate goal is to work in a specialty field such as being a drill rig mechanic or a train mechanic.

Who doesn’t like bacon wrapped hot dogs?

ts definition is the cured belly of a swine carcass. That doesn’t really sound so good to me. But when you call it bacon, now that sounds delicious.

For some people, just saying the word bacon makes them salivate. A few months back, articles and tweets started spreading, warning everyone within ear or text shot of a bacon shortage in North America. This caused an almost “War of the Worlds” outcry online.

People began imagining a world without bacon and they didn’t like what they saw.

We’ve endured gas shortages before. We’ve even survived Cabbage Patch Doll, Power Ranger, and Tickle Me Elmo shortages at Christmas time.

But we’re talking bacon here. Luckily for all of us bacon connoisseurs, more recent articles have come out stating that, while droughts across the United States have driven up the price of grain — and thus driven up the price of pork — we will have bacon.

It might cost a little more for the 2 and 2 breakfast special, but we’ll have it. OK, deep breath, everything will be fine!

Just when and where bacon went from being something that laid next to my eggs in the morning and made up the B in BLT to a food with rock star status, I’m not sure. But bacon is indeed sizzling. It’s everywhere. People talk about bacon like they would their prized possessions.

Restaurants can’t just say they have bacon. They have to let their customers know what type of wood it was smoked with and which breed of pig it came from.

There are websites devoted to it. One Facebook page called “Bacon Minute” is full of homemade videos showing bacon cooking in a pan for 1 minute. Another site, Yummly.com has just fewer than 27,000 bacon recipes.

When I typed in “bacon blog” on Google search, it came back with 127 million results. I’m not making that

Memberships in the Ramona Community Foundation are the framework for charitable grants that are given to organizations and schools that demonstrate a need and an ability to use the funds in an effective way to make Ramona a better place to live work and play. One hundred percent of the donations go for charitable purposes in Ramona.

This year, additional grantmaking dollars came from the Matt McLaughlin Endowment Fund, established at The San Diego Foundation to benefit the North County region. The Matt McLaughlin Live Here, Give Here Matching Program will allow the Ramona Community Foundation to double its impact over the next three years by matching the grantmaking portion of all membership dollars.

All funds benefit nonprofit programs that serve Ramona residents, and grantmaking decisions are made by the Ramona residents who participate as foundation members. Foundation members donate $1,000 a year, and their membership dues are split between immediate grantmaking and an endowment that will serve Ramona future causes.

“We’re extremely honored to support projects that advance our wonderful community,” said Degenfelder.

“The RCF grants support activities and programs that will serve Ramona residents of all ages, abilities, and interests. The foundation is enabling us to come together to support Ramona.”

Before the award presentations, Stacey Nelson, executive director of San Diego Hippotherapy introduced one of her clients, 5-year-old Samantha Gray, whose mother Marie discussed what the program has meant to Samantha. She shared an album with photos of Samantha’s first day of hippotherapy treatment on May 10. The joy was evident on Samantha’s face.

Ramona Community Foundation provided a brief description of each grantee and how the organizations will use the money: Performing Arts Center Revitalization Alliance for Music Education Formed in 2004, the mission of the Alliance for Music Education (AME) is to provide financial and volunteer support to the Ramona Unified School District music education programs. More than 130 students receive a top quality music education that enhances their critical thinking skills and self-efficacy while culturally enriching the community.

The grant will support the revitalization of the Charles R. Nunn Performing Arts Center, which is on the campus of Olive Peirce Middle School and adjacent to Ramona High School and serves a hub of cultural activity in Ramona. In particular, the grant will fund the purchase and installation of new theatrical lighting for the center’s stage, which is used by Ramona schools and organizations year-round.

Visual Art Education Workshops ArtReach ArtReach takes professional artists into K-6 schools throughout San Diego County to provide standardsbased visual art education workshops. ArtReach places an emphasis on providing free programs to schools that have few or no art resources and no ability to pay.

The RCF grant will allow ArtReach to provide eight hands-on visual art education workshops to all fourthand fifth-graders (160 students) at Ramona Elementary School between September 2012 and June 2013. The grant will also fund a student art display and an art activity at the Ramona Community Library. This will expand the current ArtReach program in Ramona (previously three workshops during the year) and add a community involvement component.

NJROTC recruits advance to apprentices in official ceremony

By BILL TAMBURRINO Sixty-four Ramona High students were initiated into the school’s Naval Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps and promoted from cadet recruits to cadet seaman apprentices in a commission ceremony on Tuesday, Oct. 2.

The entire unit was present for the commissioning.

Ramona’s NJROTC is a National Distinguished Unit under the direction of Senior Naval Science Instructor LCDR Mike Ernst USN (retired) and Naval Science Instructor Chief Petty Officer Bob Richardson USN (retired). The unit’s commanding officer is Cadet Darien Hightower and its executive officer is Cadet Aaron Paris. Both are seniors completing their final

year in the program.

The ceremony was brief and in accordance with the traditions and customs of the U.S. Navy. Ernst gave a brief dissertation on the history of the RHS unit and the history of commissioning ceremonies in the USN. The ceremony signifies the acceptance for service and the entry of the unit into the active fleet of the U.S. Navy. It is a Navy custom deep in tradition for centuries.

After the formal commissioning, parents and guardians of the first year cadets were invited to take part in the pinning ceremony and were encouraged to take pictures.

Some of the parents and guardians were commissioned and non-commis-

sioned officers in the U.S. Navy.

Guest speaker Lt. Larry Linscott gave a motivational speech. The theme of his speech was leadership and the responsibility of leadership. Linscott enlisted in the Navy and worked his way up the ranks from seaman recruit to lieutenant. He earned a master’s degree and earned the following awards: Joint Service Achievement Medal, six Navy and Marine Achievement medals, three Good Conduct medals, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and various campaign medals and unit awards.

After Linscott’s speech, the unit was dismissed with 64 new members. Total unit membership is 114 students.

The Palomar Challenger Cheer Squad, a team for special needs girls, is seeking donations to attend the National Pop Warner Cheer Competition in Orlando, Fla, Dec. 3 through 7.

coach, Alexis Booth of Ramona, is a former member of the squad.

The Palomar Challenger Cheer Squad is a team of six girls, she said, and the trip would be the chance of a lifetime for them. She

said the team needs to raise $20,000 to attend the competition.

Ramona and Nuevo Head Start Gardens Community Development Institute Ramona and Nuevo Head Start Programs Head Start is a federally-funded, nonprofit, comprehensive, free preschool program that serves low-income children and children with special needs. In Ramona there are two Head Start programs, serving more than 200 children and families.

The RCF grant will support a garden project to address the impact poverty has on the nutrition of Head Start children and families. The organization will build seven classroom garden plots.

Each classroom of 20 children will have the opportunity to grow vegetables from seeds to harvest. Teachers will educate the children on the environment, microorganisms, and how to grow and eat vegetables. The project will include educational curriculums and will promote ecological friendly methods to instill in children the importance of a green world.

Part-time certified therapeutic riding instructor Cornerstone Therapeutic Riding Center Cornerstone Therapeutic Riding Center (CTRC) offers equine-assisted programs designed to enrich the lives of adults and children in Ramona who are living with physical, cognitive, and emotional disabilities. CTRC is also the first program in San Diego to offer programs and services to combat injured soldiers who are in their recovery process at San Diego Naval Medical Center Balboa.

The grant will be used to hire a part-time, Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) certified riding instructor. The CTRC expects to increase clientele by 15% with the addition of a new instructor and to start serving the many people on the center’s waiting list.

San Diego Country Estates Disaster Trailer Ramona Community Emergency Response Team

The Ramona Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program is an emergency response team of local citizens who respond to large-scale disasters when local professional responders are overwhelmed. Staffed by 30 volunteers, the team recently activated for more than nine days during the Witch Fire and most recently activated during the county-wide blackout. CERT team members checked on the physically challenged and delivered emergency generators for those needing power for medical equipment.

The RCF grant will allow CERT to purchase an additional emergency supply trailer to station in San Diego Country Estates, to provide equipment and supplies in case closure of San Vicente, Old Julian Highway, or Wildcat Canyon, prevents CERT team members from accessing equipment in downtown Ramona.

Community Meeting Hall Upgrades Ramona Grange 632 Grange is a national nonprofit organization founded in 1867 to promote Community and Agriculture, and Ramona Grange is the oldest agriculture organization in San Diego County, with its first charter dated 1914.

The RCF grant will go toward renovations and improvements of the Grange Community Meeting Hall, which is used by organizations and clubs from across Ramona.

Specifically, the grant will allow the purchase and installation of fencing and gates around garden, play, and parking areas. The new fence will improve the safety in the Hall’s external areas and allow for more security.

Guy B. Woodward Museum Self-Guided Tour Implementation Ramona Pioneer Historical Society Ramona Pioneer Historical Society was founded in 1962 to perpetuate and preserve the region’s history. The mission of the historical society is to discover, collect and preserve artifacts and memorabilia to establish and

illustrate the history of California, San Diego County and the Ramona area.

Thanks to the RCF grant, the Ramona Pioneer Historical Society will install 17 self-guided tour stations throughout the Guy B. Woodward Museum, with audio equipment and recorded exhibit information from museum docents. The addition of this technology will allow the museum to triple its operating hours, thanks to the information provided by the stations, and will allow more visitors to learn about Ramona’s history, regardless of the number of docents available for tours.

Scholarships for Ramona Residents for Hippotherapy Treatment San Diego Hippotherapy The mission statement of San Diego Hippotherapy is to provide the highest-quality equine-assisted therapies and services to children and adults with physical and cognitive disabilities. Currently 40% of clients are Ramona residents, with diagnoses including MIDAS Syndrome, Prune Belly Syndrome, multiple disabilities, autism, cerebral palsy, and developmental delays. Many clients are medically complex and fragile, and require the services of a licensed, skilled therapist for equine-assisted activities.

The RCF grant will provide scholarships for four clients residing in Ramona. Each client would receive once-aweek hippotherapy sessions over a 36-week period.

In addition to Degenfelder, foundation members are Karla and Wesley Brustad, Arvie Degenfelder, Carolyn Hope Hoffos, Neil Ray Krenzel, Charles LeMenager, Marta P. Zarrella, and Donna Zick.

Ramona resident Jeanne Cannon became a foundation member Saturday evening, Degenfelder noted.

Girls tennis remains Controversial calls cost undefeated in league Bulldogs league opener

By BILL TAMBURRINO With two Valley League wins over Orange Glen and pre-season favorite Del Norte, Coach Doug Failla’s girls tennis team improved its record to 7-4 overall. The players are undefeated in the league with a 5-0 record.

Ramona beat Orange Glen 18-0 on the courts at Riviera Oaks on Tuesday, Oct. 2. Dayna Lake served up three bagels and had the equivalent of a perfect game in baseball. Lake had a golden set, which means that she went 40-love in every game in the set or did not give up a point.

She followed that with a silver set. She only gave up 1 point on a double fault.

Amanda Massey delivered two bagels as she posted scores of 6-0, 6-0, and 6-2 while winning 3 team points. Jessie Mosser won two sets with scores of 6-2 and 7-5, and Kelly Gallagher won one set with a score of 6-1.

Rebecca Vaca had a new doubles partner, Ellen Douglas, but the results for the number one team were the same. The duo went 6-0, 6-1, and 6-0. Taylor Jennings and Cassidy Owens also won 3 team points by posting scores of 6-1,

After the Ramona High School varsity football team’s hard-fought and controversial 31-28 loss to Rancho Bernardo in the Palomar League opener for both teams Friday night, Coach Damon Baldwin had a message for his Bulldogs.

“I am proud of the way that you played. You played hard the entire game. You fought back from a big deficit. I hate it when a bad call costs athletes a chance to win. But one call or one play does not win or lose a game. We have to go back and work on the fundamentals on both sides of the ball. We have two very tough games ahead of us and we are pretty banged up (several injuries to key players). Hopefully the trainer will be able to get some of our players ready,” Baldwin told the team.

The spectators from Ramona and Rancho Bernardo could not have asked for a more exciting game.

Both teams played exciting offense and there were several individual and team highlights.

The momentum changed more times than the stands by politicians on key issues in an election year.

The two teams traded

scores in the first two periods. Ramona scored first on a 6-yard Nathan Cherek run with 45 seconds left in the first quarter. Rancho Bernardo scored to tie the game 73 seconds later.

Ramona then answered with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Hunter McHargue to Javier Dominguez.

Tyler Vargas made the second of four PATs and the Dawgs had a 14-7 lead.

The momentum then changed in favor of the Broncos. The Broncos scored two touchdowns to take a 21-14 lead at halftime, and then added to their lead as they scored a touchdown and a field

goal to lead 31-14 with just over six minutes left to play in the third period.

The Bulldogs then recaptured the momentum and drove 96 yards on the ground. Brandon Gansch went the final yards to make it a 31-21 ball game.

Ramona scored early in the fourth quarter on a 19yard pass from McHargue to Garrett Binkley to make it a one possession ball game at 31-28.

Two more victories add to Water Dawgs’ win streak

By JOE NAIMAN Ramona High School’s boys water polo extended its winning streak to six games with wins Oct. 2 at Oceanside and Oct. 5 at home against Rancho Bernardo.

The two wins gave the Bulldogs an overall 10-4 record for the season while the 18-3 win against Oceanside at Brook Street Pool gave Ramona a 1-0

mark for Valley League play.

Oceanside won the opening sprint in the two teams’ league opener, but Cory Davison had two goals off steals in the first 20 seconds. The Bulldogs had a 5-0 lead three minutes into the game. Ramona coach Donnie Williams did everything possible to avoid running up the score, including working on tougher plays and put-

ting his starters in other positions, but the Bulldogs still held a 10-2 lead at halftime.

Ramona’s leading scorer this season, Matteo Franchello, did not score a goal although eight other Ramona players did. One of those was Isaac Gross, who is Ramona’s starting goalie; Williams put Franchello in the nets and Gross in the field. Ryan Hall and Garrett Klem

each placed four balls into the net, Davison and Jesse Reiling scored three times apiece, and Karl Schwettman, Levi Vermeulen, and Vinnie Talento joined Gross with a single goal.

“It’s a tough game to try to challenge yourself,” Williams said.

Rancho Bernardo was a Palomar League opponent last year and in 2010, but is now a non-league opponent for the Bulldogs. The

Broncos scored the game’s first goal, but Ramona scored the next three to conclude the first quarter with a 3-1 lead.

“I thought they played great,” Williams said. “We were executing what we were trying to do.”

Ramona built up a 5-1 lead before three Bronco scores made the halftime margin 6-4.

“Most of those were just broken down plays,” Wil-

liams said of Rancho Bernardo’s goals.

Ramona scored the third period’s first goal.

“We started to build on it,” Williams said.

The Bulldogs led 10-6 entering the fourth quarter, although Rancho Bernardo had that period’s first two scores. The score then went to 11-8 and subsequently 11-9 and 12-9.

Girls volleyball racks up league, tournament wins

By JOE NAIMAN Ramona High School’s girls volleyball team not only won its first two Valley League matches Oct. 2 at Valley Center and Oct. 4 at home against Oceanside, but the Bulldogs also won the silver division championship in the Oct. 5-6 Scripps Ranch Tournament.

The Bulldogs’ seven wins in eight matches over the five-day period gave Ramona a 12-4 overall season record along with a 2-0 league statistic.

“It was a very nice week,” said Ramona coach Connie Halfaker.

The three-game win against Valley Center was by 25-19, 25-12, and 2518 scores.

Christina Barrameda, Kelsie Whitten, and Abby Roulier each had seven kills while Callie Guasti and Jennah Hickle had six kills apiece.

“It was a very balanced match for us. Our offense was spread out among everybody really evenly,” Halfaker said. “That’s always nice because it keeps the opponent confused.”

Hickle led the Bulldogs with 14 digs while Julie Vorhes had 12. Barrameda had five serving aces and Whitten had three.

“We served tough. We did everything very aggressively,” Halfaker said.

Setter Mikayla Derochie had 34 assists.

The low point of the week occurred near the end of practice Oct. 3 when Derochie injured her

ankle.

“It’s very difficult to play with a replacement setter,” Halfaker said.

Senior Cassidy Shields is a utility player for the Bulldogs and became Ramona’s setter after Derochie’s injury. Shields was a setter as a sophomore on Ramona’s 2010 junior varsity team, and last year she was an outside hitter on the JV team. The Bulldogs extended practice by about 45 minutes so that the players could work with Shields.

“We didn’t skip a beat going against Oceanside,” Halfaker said.

The league win against Oceanside was the first of three matches in three days against the Pirates. The contest at Ramona’s gym was a 25-17, 25-18, 24-14 victory for the Bulldogs.

Shields had 38 assists against Oceanside. Hickle and Barrameda each had nine kills apiece, Whitten added eight kills, and Roulier recorded seven kills.

“That was very balanced,” Halfaker said.

Vorhes had 10 digs and Hickle contributed nine.

Barrameda had four aces with Whitten adding three.

“With the ability to really be focused in when they need to be determined, it was going to go their way,” Halfaker said.

Ramona played its Scripps Ranch Tournament pool play matches at Escondido High School. The Bulldogs opened pool play with a 25-7, 25-21 win over Clairemont.

absolutely like a machine,” Halfaker said. “They were just playing.”

Halfaker credits the Chieftains’ adjustments in the second game, along with Ramona’s focus on obtaining experience for substitutes, with the closer score. “Clairemont started playing better,” she said.

Ramona then played Escondido, who took a pair of 25-22 victories and eventually won first place in the pool.

“We played very, very well,” Halfaker said. “We felt very good about it.”

While Shields was able to fill in for Derochie with regard to setter distribution duties, the 5-foot-6-inch Shields was not able to match her Escondido counterparts when the rotation

made her lack of height vulnerable to Cougar plays.

“The difference was fairly evident with her rotating to the front row,” Halfaker said.

Halfaker can’t fault Shields for that. “She was a very, very valiant warrior, fought hard,” Halfaker said.

Pool play concluded with a crossover match, and Oceanside was the secondfinishing team in the site’s other pool. Ramona concluded the evening with 25-20 and 25-22 victories over the Pirates.

“Oceanside played a little bit better,” Halfaker said.

Halfaker also noted some Ramona fatigue during that 8 p.m. match.

“We had just played very, very hard against Escondido,” she said.

Although the scores were relatively close, Halfaker didn’t feel threatened.

“They always kept a cushion,” she said. “Very happy with the team’s play in general all the way across.”

Ramona’s Oct. 6 matches were at Westview High School. The first one, against Coronado, would determine whether Ramona would compete in the silver division or the bronze division. Four of Ramona’s players took the Scholastic Aptitude Test that morning; two of those arrived during warmups prior to the match against Coronado while Hickle and Whitten joined Derochie in missing the contest against the Islanders.

“The girls that were playing did a great job,” Hal-

faker said. “When they needed to, they pulled everything together.”

Ramona’s 25-19 victory in the first game was countered by Coronado’s 25-19 triumph in game two. Ramona won the third and deciding game by a 15-4 score.

The win put Ramona into the silver division, and a three-hour break between that match and the semifinal against Mt. Carmel allowed Hickle and Whitten to arrive. Ramona advanced to the finals with a 25-18, 25-17 win over the Sundevils.

The silver division championship match was against Oceanside, and Ramona defeated the Pirates for the third time in three days. The Bulldogs took 25-21 and 25-16 games over Oceanside, who had advanced to the finals with wins over Helix and Grossmont.

“It was nice,” Halfaker said.

“They were very consistent all day long,” noted Halfaker. “They just went about business as usual and did a fantastic job.”

Two Bulldogs were named to the silver division all-tournament team.

Hickle received the most votes, making her the division’s most valuable player.

Barrameda also received all-tournament honors.

“That was really nice that they were honored,” Halfaker said. “I was really pleased for them.”

Ramona has a league meet at Orange Glen on Thursday, Oct. 11.

Frosh football names Josh Guzman honorary captain

The most important muscle in a football player is his heart. That can be taken figuratively or literally. The same can be said for a football team and a football program.

The Ramona High School freshman football team has heart. The class of 2016 has added another man to its team. The players have made him feel wanted and have accepted him with open arms.

Josh Guzman is a freshman at Ramona High School.

He loves football and he loves the frosh team at RHS. He has gone to all of the freshmen games, both home and away. He has been on the sidelines. He watches the games from his wheelchair. Josh has cerebral palsy.

Coach Mike Schuler noticed Josh at the games and when asked if he could spare a jersey for Josh to wear, Shuler responded, “Only team members get jerseys. So we will make Josh a part of our team. He is a loyal Bulldog. We will also make him an honorary captain.” This was before Schuler knew that Josh was the cousin of his quarterback Marco Cobian.

Marco is a captain and last Thursday he wheeled Josh, the honorary captain and his cousin, out to the R at midfield for the coin toss.

Josh will never get into a game but he does line up with the team after the games and he gives the opponents high fives in the sportsmanship line. The opponents have also accepted Josh as a worthy opponent and treat him like every other member of the team.

“Yesterday was the best day in Josh’s life. I have never seen him happier. I was having a bad day, but when I saw Josh at midfield with his cousin, it made my day too. The coaches and team will never know how much I appreciate what they have done for Josh and how much

it means to him,” said his mother, Nora, who attended Ramona High School and lettered in basketball for the Lady Bulldogs.

Her brothers and Josh’s uncles, George and Joe Cobian, played at RHS and played college football at Baker University in Kansas. Her brother Cesar also played football at RHS. Her sister, Elizabeth, also lettered in basketball. Josh’s grandfather, Jose Cobian, was a longtime athletic equipment man at RHS. So Josh is a part of a Bulldog family.

“We consider our football program a Bulldog family.

Players, coaches, staff, parents, guardians, fans, Bulldog Angels, trainers, team doctor and boosters are all a part of that family. Josh is an important part of that family,” said Coach Damon Baldwin when asked about Josh being an honorary captain. “He is an honorary captain, but he is a member of our team.”

It is yet to be seen if Josh will move up the ranks in the football program from frosh to JV to varsity. That is up to Josh.

Boys cross country win evens Valley League dual meet record

By JOE NAIMAN Ramona High School’s boys cross-country team evened its Valley League dual meet record at 1-1 on Oct. 4 with a 15-48 victory over Mission Vista at Guajome Park.

“They did awesome.

They had perfect scores in both varsity and JV,” said Ramona coach Steve Albanese.

The first five finishers in each race wore Ramona uniforms.

The pack running of four of Ramona’s later finishers was also significant in the Bulldogs’ 28-29 win over the Timberwolves.

“Our pack saved us,” said Coach Kim Toth.

Team scores are derived by adding the positions of the top five finishers. A team’s sixth and

seventh finishers are not scored but can add points to an opponent’s score.

Ramona’s fourth through seventh runners finished within three seconds of each other to relegate Mission Vista’s fifth finisher to 12th place.

“It looked like a cloud of blue coming down the hill,” Toth said. “That was awesome to see.”

Mazzola had a time of 14:42 on the 2.4-mile course. Mission Vista had the second and third finishers. Ramona sophomore Arianna Ruland was fourth overall at 15:56.

“With each race they’re learning how to work together more and more and just working as a team,” Toth said.

Anna Mazzola finishes first

Attack Dawgs secure 6th win

In Ramona High School’s girls cross-country team’s Oct. 4 meet against Mission Vista, Ramona junior Anna Mazzola was the first overall finisher and the fastest Bulldog runner, by over a minute, on Guajome Park’s 2.4-mile course.

The win was the second in a row for Mazzola, whose performance merited Ramona Sentinel athlete of the week honors for Oct. 1-6.

“She’s just a very talented athlete,” said Ramona coach Kim Toth.

Mazzola finished the Guajome Park course in 14:42, and her victory contributed to Ramona’s 1 point win over Mission Vista.

Ramona’s first dual meet took place Sept. 27 at Dos Picos Park, and Mazzola’s time of 17:27 on the 2.75-

mile course won the race while contributing to Ramona’s team win over Orange Glen.

competed in the Mt. Carmel/Movin’ Shoes CrossCountry Invitational at Morley Field in San Diego and finished fifth in the senior race with a time of 13:03 on the 2.1-mile course.

“Where she finished for the Mt. Carmel meet, that was awesome,” Toth said.

Ramona opened its season on Sept. 1 at the Vaquero Stampede meet at Lindo Lake Park in Lakeside. Mazzola’s time of 11:07 on the 1.65-mile course placed fourth.

“I was hoping we were going to see her full potential this season,” Toth said.

“This year when she came out, she started off strong

and she’s just progressing.”

Mazzola competed during the first month of the 2011 cross-country season before being pulled from a race for health issues and missing the rest of the season.

“I’m really glad that she came back this year. It was disappointing to lose her last year,” Toth said. Toth noted that Mazzola needs to improve her pacing technique for longer distances.

“She stays out in the front,” Toth said.

What Mazzola does have is a willingness to run extra mileage.

“She will always embrace that opportunity,” said Toth.

In a play that came from behind a wall of blockers, running back Mason Wrenn ran in for a 26-yard touchdown. Cole Matson played a well-executed game with his defensive hits. Colin Nungesser made several tackles on the quarterback, including a fumble that was recovered by defensive end Gabriel Lutz.
