BRONCOS CELEBRATE HOMECOMING DISNEY STYLE — Rancho Bernardo High held its annual homecoming game on Friday, during which the Broncos — in their first win of the season — beat the Ramona Bulldogs 31-28. Throughout the week, students wore Disney-theme attire and decorated class floats accordingly. The seniors won the float competition. Above, the cheer and dance team members performed a routine at the game. See more photos on Page 20. Photo by Beverley Brooks
Seven Oaks to celebrate 50 years on Saturday BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Seven Oaks residents are invited to a 50th birthday party for their neighborhood, the first that opened in Rancho Bernardo. The party will be 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13 in the Seven Oaks Community Center auditorium, 16789 Bernardo Oaks Drive. The program that will start around 11:15 a.m. will include a recognition of longtime residents, said Nancy Zone, Seven Oaks activities committee chairwoman. The neighborhood, designated for those 55-years and older, was crucial in the launching of the master-planned community constructed at the then-farthest northern reaches of the City of San Diego. Lots were graded and construction began in 1962 and the first residents moved into Seven Oaks soon after. From a few hundred by the mid-1960s, the neighborhood
grew to 1,759 homes — 1,349 designated as single family and 410 condominiums, Zone said. The free party is open to current Seven Oaks residents only. It will include finger foods, sandwiches, salads and desserts that will be served from 12:30-2:30 p.m., she said. There will also be music. KFMB talk radio host Mike Slater will serve as master of ceremonies. Speakers will be Superior Court Judge David Berry, City Councilman Carl DeMaio and former City Councilman Brian Maienschein. A proclamation from Mayor Jerry Sanders will also be read and the Seven Oaks board of directors members will be introduced. Residents who had photos taken in April for inclusion in the neighborhood’s 50th anniversary photo directory will be able to pick up the commemorative books during the celebration.

Rancho Bernardo Planning Board needs RB residents at next week’s meeting to give guidance on what capital improvement projects they would like to see in the community. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 in the Club 21 room at RB Swim & Tennis Club, 16955 Bernardo Oaks Drive. The request for community guidance is part of a city-recommended process as staff form the fiscal year 2014 budget, said board member Peter Tereschuck. Examples of possible projects include new or improved facilities for parks and recreation, streets, recycled water, bridges, transportation, environmental services, fire rescue, public utilities, storm water and building facilities. Residents are being asked to describe the projects they would like, explain the purpose or need, and project urgency. The projects need to have a life expectancy of more than one year.
