‘Christmas in the Park’ returns Saturday night

The Poway Swim Center pool at 13094 Civic Center Dive will be closed for annual maintenance from Saturday, Dec. 17 to Sunday, Jan. 8. The Poway Skate Park will be open from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Dec. 17-19, but closed after 4:30 p.m. due to Winterfest activities at Poway Community Park.
The City of Poway and the Old Poway Park Action Committee will be offering the annual “Christmas in the Park” Saturday, Dec. 10. The free event, which runs from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. at 14134 Midland Road in Old Poway Park, includes a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, sweets for sale, ornament making for kids, holiday music sung by carolers and performed by bands, tours of the Poway Historical Society Museum and the Nelson House, and other activities. Former Councilman Bob Emery will light the Christmas tree at 5:20 p.m.,while Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive at 5:30 p.m. on the 1907 Baldwin steam engine, accompanied by western gunfighters. Guests are encouraged to bring an ornament for the Christmas tree. See PARK, Page A13

BY STEVE DREYER It is time for the historic, disease-ravaged Kent Sycamore tree to be cut down, City Council members decided Tuesday night. The tree, believed by experts to be between 150 and 300 years old, has become a safety hazard, the council unanimously agreed. Located at the end of Outlook Road, off Midland Road, it was designated a Heritage Tree by the city in 2001. Although not easily seen by the public today, the tree is prominent in some of the earliest photos taken of Poway. Ownership is shared between the city and a property owner. “It’s the gem of our Heritage Tree Program” declared Dee Fleischman, member of the city’s tree committee until it was disbanded a year ago. Jim Thompson, a city-hired arborist, examined the tree in October and concluded it “has severe rot and has weakening cavities causing high failure portions in all four main trunk link attachments.” While a severe pruning might temporarily
