BY STEVE DREYER While the Marines assigned to 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion are well known and respected for their fighting ability, they can also be friendly and accommodating. Thirty Poway community representatives discovered that side of the battalion on Monday when they were hosted aboard Camp Pendleton for a full day of activities where participants learned a little about the Marines, their mission and the equipment they use. Battalion representatives extended their “Poway Day” invitation during an appearance at the Feb. 7 City Council meeting. The invite came one year after Poway Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7907 hosted a welcome home barbecue for dozens of unit members who had returned from their tour in Afghanistan. The renaming was announced Tuesday, but decided by its board of directors last month. The renovated Arbolitos Sports Field should be open for the resumption of sporting events by mid-June, according to the city’s community services director. “The field is beginning to look good, but we still have a bit of time on the maintenance contract and then we will do one last top dressing and give it about a month to set in,” Robin Bettin said. “We will take a core sample to be certain the roots are strong and the field is ready to go.” Bob Hahn, the city’s parks maintenance supervisor, added, “As long as nothing catastrophic occurs over the next couple of months, June is a very realistic target date for an official reopening.” The grass on the playing field was mowed and
