Draft plan includes four Ramona roads

Scammers playing on the heartstrings of grandparents have struck in Ramona twice in the past two weeks, robbing victims in each case of well over $4,000 apiece, authorities said. The so-called Grandparents Scam involves the perpetrators calling up grandparents and telling them their grandchild is in trouble. They say the grandchild is stuck in Mexico or another destination and needs bail money or other funds to pay for such things as car repairs or accident fines, said Crime Prevention Specialist Barbara Wallace with the sheriff’s Ramona station. Sometimes the crooks

extension, $6.4 million for the Pamo Road Bridge project, and $4.5 million for the Ramona Street extension. TransNet funding from the half-cent sales tax is being used for the San Vicente Road, Dye Road, and Ramona Street expenses while the Pamo Road bridge will be funded through the federal government’s Highway Bridge Program and from County of San Diego funding for road projects. SANDAG’s 17-0 vote, with the representatives from El Cajon and Lemon Grove not present at the time of the voting, releases the draft RTIP for public review. In addition to a 30day public comment period, a public hearing will be scheduled at the Sept. 7 SANDAG Transportation Committee meeting, and the full SANDAG board will review the final RTIP for adoption on Sept. 28. SANDAG approved the previous update, which covered fiscal years 2011 through 2015, in September 2010. The 2012 update will cover fiscal years 2013 through 2017 and will include projects funded by federal, state, local, and private sources. The plan covers major highway, arterial, transit, rail, and non-motorized projects in San Diego County. Phase I of the San Vicente Road project will

Livestock Olympics under way at junior fairgrounds By MAUREEN ROBERTSON While 2012 Summer Olympics fans stay tuned to the international competition, excitement is building closer to home, as the Livestock Olympics get under way in Ramona. The theme of the 41st Annual Ramona Junior Fair coincides with the London contests, but that’s where the similarity ends. Instead of swimmers, runners and gymnasts competing for medals across the Atlantic, 4-H, FFA and Grange participants from throughout San Diego County are in Ramona in hopes of their animals garnering blue or red ribbons—guaranteeing them entry into the auction arena on Saturday, Aug. 4—and perhaps a grand

championship or reserve grand championship. The junior fair started July 28 with the dog show and rabbit/cavy show. The annual horse show was Sunday. Livestock move-in and weigh-in was Tuesday, with sheep, goat, poultry, swine, veal, beef, and dairy cattle shows and showmanships scheduled Wednesday through Friday. The highlight of the week, the livestock auction, will start at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Large and small animal round robins will be Sunday, with move-out and takedown slated for Monday morning. All the activity will be at the Ramona Junior Fairgrounds at 431 Aqua Lane. An See JUNIOR FAIR on page12
