nless more Ramonans file as candidates in the Nov. 6 election, voters will not be casting ballots for Ramona planning group and water board, and they’ll be choosing two of three contenders for seats on the school board.

Ramonans interested in seeking four-year terms on the school board, water board and planning group have until 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, to file as candidates with the San Diego County Registrar of Voters office. As of Tuesday morning, three people had filed for two seats on the Ramona Unified School District Board—incumbents Dan Lopez and Dawn Perfect and retired educator/businessman John M. Rajcic. Three seats on the fivemember Ramona Municipal Water District are

open: Divisions 1, 3 and 5. Water board directors are elected by division, and only voters within each division’s geographic boundaries may vote. While Bryan Wadlington, Division 3’s representative, has said he plans to seek re-election, he had not filed as of Tuesday morning. George W. Foote, a retired sheriff’s lieutenant, has filed for the Division 5 seat now held by Everett “Red” Hager, who has said he does not plan to seek a third term. No candidates had yet filed for the Division 1 seat

on the water board. Darrell Beck is completing his first term as Division 1 director. At least two candidates are needed in each of the three open water board divisions for there to be an election. As of Tuesday morning, incumbent Richard Tomlinson and behavioral health manager Robin Joy Maxson were the only candidates for the eight seats open on the 15-member Ramona Community Planning Group. Unless at least nine people file, there will be no planning group election.

Alcohol, motorcyles primary factors A vision for the future of our schools in SR-67 fatal accidents, says CHP By KAREN BRAINARD

By ROBERT W. GRAEFF, Ed.D Superintendent of the Ramona Unified School District In preparation for the opening of the new school year just two weeks away, I am repeatedly asked to describe the vision for the Ramona Unified School District and how our local schools hope to continue providing an outstanding education for our local children. The response to that challenge is clear, optimistic, and simple to explain. First, our 600 employees based at 10 school sites serving more than 6,000 students will continue to provide a very competitive education program devoted to promote 21st Century Learning, College and Career Readiness, and extraordinary success in basic skills for all students. Since the inception of statewide API scores in 2001, Ramona Unified has increased student achievement every single year, raising its API from 733 to 820 — including the highest increase over the past two years of any medium or large district in the entire County of San Diego. Over the past 10 years, our schools have earned See VISION FOR RAMONA SCHOOLS on page14

Two California Highway Patrol officers addressed safety concerns on state Route 67 at the Ramona Community Planning Group’s Aug. 2 meeting, noting speed is currently not the primary factor in fatal collisions. Lt. Tommie Cocroft from the El Cajon CHP office said that during the first two quarters of this year, specifically in Ramona, fatal collisions primarily came from motorcycles, driven mainly by East County residents. Since the third quarter began, collisions in the East County have been primarily alcohol-related, he said. See HIGHWAY SAFETY, page 14
