The saying goes “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”— so in this case, when in Del Mar, do as the “Del Marians do.” Here are a couple of pointers to help you get a true taste of the local flavor, and tips on some Del Mar gems that are not to be missed while you’re here.

Dog-friendliness is a Del Mar tradition. The city has maintained that status since it was incorporated in 1959 and, for proof, you need look no further than North Beach, affectionately known as “Dog Beach.” This strip of beach north of 29th Street is a hotspot for four-legged beachgoers and dog-lovers alike. Dogs must be leashed during the summer months, but they are allowed with no leash the rest of the year. To access “Dog Beach,” use the paid parking along Coast Highway north of 29th Street. Perched above Del Mar’s Dog Beach is Scripps Bluff Preserve. Though it’s a relatively steep climb, the view is worth every step. Savor the sunset at this lesser-known preserve. The high vantage point on this bluff gives you a 360-degree view of the coastline and the inland lagoons. So, not only can you watch the sun dip down over the Pacific, but you can turn and watch the sky inland change colors, which can be especially spectacular if there happens to be hot air balloons in flight. To access the bluff, use the paid parking at North Beach (aka Dog Beach) along Camino Del Mar. Dog Beach is located at 3006 Sandy Lane, Del Mar, 92014. As you walk onto North Beach, look for a wooden staircase to your right. Follow the staircase up to a trail that leads you to the top of the bluff.

Seagrove Park and the adjacent Powerhouse Park comprise Del Mar’s crown jewel, and after you take in the view there, you’ll see why. The sprawling grassy knolls overlook the beach, making it a popular place to sunbathe or dine al fresco at one of the many picnic tables. To see the full scope of this area, begin at the outer rim of Seagrove Park and work your way down to Powerhouse Park, stopping along the route to gaze at the sea and surfers below. If you walk past the “Tot Lot” play area at Powerhouse Park, you’ll find a small gateway that leads to a dirt path. Follow that trail to a cluster of benches where you can sit and bask in the sun. Tony’s Jacal 621 Valley Ave, Solana Beach, CA 92075 858-755-2274 TonysJacal.com It was immediately after World War II in 1946 that Tony and Catalina Gonzales decided to open a restaurant on the present site. Tony had just returned from military service and Catalina, who had contented herself with staying at home while Tony was away, persuaded him to allow her to open a Mexican restaurant right in his parents’ home. Catalina did the cooking and Tony helped serve. Soon the word about their chiles rellenos, turkey tacos and other tasty food spread throughout the area and even as far north as Los Angeles. The restaurant is open every day but Tuesday, except during race season. Traditional Mexican dishes are prepared with mild or hot seasonings to please the discriminating palate. The menu also includes some American entrees.The Gonzales family is proud of their cuisine and the years of devoted service they have given their customers, many of whom return regularly for the chiles rellenos and other Mexican favorites.

Around Del Mar you’ll find more than a pretty coastline. You’ll also discover sprawling lagoons and wetlands teeming with wildlife. All that natural beauty makes for some of the region’s best hiking. So whether you follow alongside a docent or go solo, these are routes worth lacing up for.

Spectacular hiking trails can be found at the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, 12600 N. Torrey Pines Road, La Jolla, 92037. Sandwiched between Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course on the south and Del Mar on the north, this coastal park offers exquisite ocean

vistas and is home to the nation’s rarest pine tree, Pinus torreyana. Free guided tours are available weekends and holidays at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., beginning at the Visitor Center (The Lodge). If you prefer to explore alone, the trail system offers easy to moderate routes, with

more moderate trails running parallel to the coast at the lower levels of the reserve, and steeper ones that switchback their way down toward the coast. Day-use parking is $10. The park is open from 8 a.m. until sunset daily. torreypine.org.

Soak in some sun and scenery while walking along the San Dieguito River on Riverpath Del Mar. This quarter-mile route is on flatland, making it ideal for a leisurely stroll or picnic on the riverbank. To access the path, go west on Via de la Valle, then south on Jimmy Durante Boulevard, just past the bridge over the San Dieguito River. The trail is along the south shore of the river. Nestled between Solana Beach and Encinitas is the San Elijo Lagoon, one of San Diego County’s largest coastal wetlands. The sprawling 1,000 acres is home to more than 700 species of plants and animals. The trail system offers eight trails, most of which take about 90 minutes to hike. Free naturalist-led walks are held every Saturday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. beginning at the San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center, which is located at 2710 Manchester Avenue, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, 92007. A stone’s throw from the beach on the north side of Del Mar, you’ll find San Dieguito Lagoon. If you’re a birdwatcher or photographer, this ocean inlet is not to be missed. It serves as stopover site for many migratory birds on the Pacific Flyway, and as a nursery for endangered species, including the California Least Tern. To help identify the birds, refer to the chart at the lagoon’s viewing dock. To access the dock, take Jimmy Durante Boulevard to San Dieguito Drive. The viewing area is on your left. To access the lagoon trailhead: Go east on Via de la Valle, turn right on San Andres and park anywhere along San Andres. Access trail at kiosk.
