Scripps Pier is part of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. While not open to the public, the nearby beach is a great spot for a walk or watching surfers. You can find the pier and beach by going north on Torrey Pines Road. Turn left at La Jolla Shores Drive and left again on El Paseo Grande. Street parking available. Or you can park at nearby Kellogg Park, which is to the south.

of La Jolla’s best-known spots is “The Cove.” On a clear day, you’ll get to The Cove One take in views all the way to Catalina and Dana Point, or you can just relax and watch swimmers get their daily exercise. 10 best views Museum of Contemporary Art For great sunsets or just a meditation break, stop by the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla, 700 Prospect St. While you’re taking in the great exhibits, you can view the Pacific or relax in the meditation garden. Take Girard Avenue west to Kline Street. Turn left to Draper, then right. The museum will be in front of you.

La Valencia Another great spot for sunsets and a nice glass of wine is the La Valencia’s Ocean View Terrace at 1132 Prospect St. Take Girard toward the ocean. Turn right at Prospect. The hotel will be on your left. KENT HORNER

Turn right and then left to stay on Hillside Drive. Turn right at Via Capri and left at Soledad Park Road. There you’ll find 360-degree views, walking trails and the Mount Soledad Veterans Memorial. 10 best views no Salk Institute There’s more striking view in La Jolla than the one framed by the concrete and teak structure of The Salk Institute. Designed by architect Louis Kahn for Dr. Jonas Salk, the research center was designed to marry the creativity of art and science. Stand in the courtyard and watch the sun fall into the sea beyond the reflecting pool. Take Torrey Pines Road north. Turn left at the light onto North Torrey Pines Road and stay left when you reach the intersection at the UCSD campus. Turn left at the light at Torrey Pines Scenic Drive. CATHY JONES

Torrey Pines Golf Course Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course not only offers great golf, but a great spot to watch hang gliders and paragliders soar above the cliffs. Take Torrey Pines Road north. 10 best views Windansea Beach Horner

Photographer Kent says this sunset at Windansea Beach is the best he’s ever seen. It’s where surfing legends were made, so be sure to take your copy of Tom Wofle’s “Pump House Gang” to get the lowdown. Take Girard past Vons to Pearl Street. Turn left at the light at La Jolla Boulevard. Then it’s a right on Nautilus Street and a left at Neptune Place. You’ll know you’ve arrived when you see the shack, first built in the 1940s. KENT HORNER

This rock gave La Jolla’s southern neighborhood its name: Bird Rock. Today, those who go there regularly say erosion is eating away at its characteristic hole. Enjoy the views from the foot of Bird Rock Street. From your spot on Girard, go past Vons and take a right on Pearl Street and a left on La Jolla Boulevard. Go about 1.7 miles — you’ll get to negotiate some roundabouts — and then turn left at Bird Rock Avenue. Go to the end of the street.

beaches & parks hen people think of La Jolla, the scenery along the Pacific Coast often is among their first thoughts. Whether it’s the surfing legends who put Windansea Beach and its reef break on the map in the 1940s or the harbor seals that loll around the Children’s Pool attracting visitors, the beaches and nature are indelibly tied to La Jolla’s image.

This famous beach is known best for being the largest nude beach in the United States. It is also known to surfers as one of the best beach break spots in Southern California. The powerful waves at this spot are due to the underwater canyon located just offshore. However, it can be a dangerous spot, especially for beginners. Located near UC San Diego, this spot is popular with the students and well-known local surfers.

around la jolla Boomer Beach Boomer Beach, located west of La Jolla Cove, is known for being a beach for serious bodysurfing. Boomer has some of the best waves in San Diego County and attracts well-known local bodysurfers. During the summer, it is a great spot for those who like to sunbathe and snorkel.

Children’s Pool (Casa Beach) Created with a donation from La Jolla philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps, who gave money to build a sea wall in 1931 and created a trust to create a swimming beach for children, the beach is now home to a harbor seal rookery. Surrounded by a walkway and various vantage points, it offers a great spot for reflection or viewing the seals. Pupping season for the seals is mid-May to mid-September. Divers also use the beach to enter nearby waters. The beach itself is called Casa Beach. Lifeguards are housed nearby to keep an eye on the pool and adjacent beaches.

around la jolla A seaside grassy setting on La Jolla Cove. Home to summer concerts and occasional films on the green.

La Jolla is famous for worldclass surfing.

Hospitals Beach Located in the middle of a long narrow patch of grass, just south of Wipeout Beach, Hospitals Beach is a great reef for snorkeling and surfing. During low tide, there are great tide pools and great shelling along the coast. The conditions aren’t always ideal; however, when they are, it’s considered to be one of the best dive sites in San Diego. Dramatic underwater ledges are home to hundreds of local lobsters. Located at the south end is the famous surf spot, perfect for all surfers.

La Jolla Caves 1325 Prospect St. In 1902, a tunnel was dug to the Sunny Jim Cave, which was named by “Wizard of Oz” author Frank Baum. Today you can explore the cave by entering through the Cave Store or by sea via kayak. If by water, you’ll find six caves, but be careful of the tides and surf conditions.

La Jolla Cove Located on Coast Boulevard north of Prospect Street, a short walk from the Village commercial area, the Cove is a tiny — but well-known beach tucked between sandstone cliffs. It’s the launching point for many of the swimmers who start their mornings throughout the year with a dip in the Pacific. One of three La Jolla beaches with

lifeguards year-round and located within the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve, it’s also a good spot for diving and snorkeling, as long as surf conditions are calm.

La Jolla Shores La Jolla Shores, at 8200 Camino del Oro, is a mile-long sandy beach. It is home to San Diego’s only oceanfront launch ramp where kayakers can directly access the coastal waters. In summertime, the waves at the Shores are generally calmer than at other area beaches, but rip currents can be strong so keep an eye on the lifeguard tower for up-to-date conditions. Beginnerlevel scuba, surf and kayak classes can be arranged for at nearby shops, and the beach and nearby Kellogg Park are ideal for picnicking. around la jolla Reserve. It has the city’s only oceanfront launching ramp that is used by kayakers and small boats and a popular boardwalk.

Marine Street Beach Marine Street Beach is a popular beach for diving, body surfing and sunbathing. This secluded beach is best at low tide. Picnic areas and public restrooms are not available, and the rough surf is not suitable for children. Parking is limited to neighborhood streets.

San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park This protected offshore area encompasses 6,000 acres. It includes the San Diego Ecological Reserve, a well-known scuba and snorkeling spot that covers the area from La Jolla Cove to about the middle of the beach at La Jolla Shores, and a Marine Life Refuge covering the area around Scripps Pier at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. No fishing is allowed in the reserve.

Shell Beach Located between the Children’s Pool and Boomer Beach, south of the La Jolla Cove, Shell Beach is

a great place for tide pooling and shell collecting, especially for small children. Snorkeling is popular in the beautiful reefs and deep waters. This location is ideal for those who don’t want to share the beach with a big crowd.

Whispering Sands Beach (Horseshoes) Located south of Hospitals Beach, Whispering Sands Beach is known as Horseshoes Beach to local surfers. It is a quiet and secluded spot, accessible only from an unmarked stairwell close to the corner of Coast Boulevard and Prospect Street, or from the end of Marine Street. It has a reputation among locals as a good spot for surfing and bodysurfing.

Windansea Beach This historic beach, at the foot of Neptune Street, extends from north of Palomar Avenue to south of Westbourne Street. It is known as one of the most famous surf spots in Southern California and has a long history with many of surfing’s legends, from Woody Eckstrom, Fred Kenyon and Don Okey, who built the original surf shack in the 1940s, to Chuck Halsey, who founded Windansea Surf Club, and Mike Hynson, who starred in “The Endless

about la jolla What’s in a name? The origin of the name “La Jolla” is controversial among historians, although some believe it was derived from the Spanish “la joya,” meaning “the jewel.” Other interpretations include an Indian term, “woholle,” meaning “hole in the mountains,” an appropriate name considering the porous, rocky structures located along La Jolla’s shoreline and the main entry into the community along what is now La Jolla Parkway. In the 1870s, the name LaJoya appeared in random documents, while in 1928, it was found in land grant and mission records. La Jolla has also been called the Marblehead, the Gloucester, the Newport of the Pacific and the Capri of America. la jolla visitor guide

about la jolla Scripps sisters gave Bishop’s roots The Bishop’s School in La Jolla was founded in 1909 by the Right Rev. Joseph Horsfall Johnson, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, with land and monetary donations by two La Jollan philanthropists — Ellen Browning Scripps and her half-sister, Virginia Scripps. la jolla visitor guide

Ellen Browning Scripps, a teacher, copy editor and journalist, the only one of 10 children in her family to receive a college degree, shared the same sensibilities as Bishop Johnson in the importance of a good education. She was also benevolent in the founding of other landmarks and institutions in La Jolla — the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Ellen Browning Scripps Park.

about la jolla Harry’s still a hangout Harry’s Coffee Shop, in the heart of downtown La Jolla, is one of the oldest eateries in San Diego. It was founded by Harry Rudolph in 1960, who bought the restaurant then called Gene’s, in 1960 when John F. Kennedy was elected president, Heinz ketchup was 22 cents a bottle and gasoline was 30 cents a gallon. It’s now owned by three of Rudolph’s nine children — John, Harry III and Liz Gotfredson. The retro diner decor hasn’t changed much over the last 50 years; they’re still serving hearty, home-style cuisine, and the prices are still pretty reasonable for La Jolla fare. la jolla visitor guide

In December 1995, the main library at UCSD was renamed the Geisel Library in honor of Theodor and Audrey’s generous donations along with their dedication to improving literacy. Audrey Geisel continues to enrich the culture of the San Diego community in many ways, including her partnership with The Old Globe Theatre in the production of her late husband’s “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” a stage extravaganza that delights children of all ages each holiday season.

Understanding ‘spa’ services Confused about what type of spa treatment might work for what ails you? This guide comes from The Salon and Spa Association to explain what’s available.

Massage therapy A masseuse’s techniques generally address the soft tissues for the purposes of palliative and stress management issues. Massage therapy may include techniques such as stroking, kneading, gliding, percussion, friction, vibration, compression, passive or active stretching within the normal anatomical range of movement; effleurage; petrissage or tapotement. Techniques may be applied with or without the aid of lubricants, salt or herbal preparations, hydromassage, thermal massage or a massage stone that mimics or enhances the actions possible by human hands. The purpose of the practice of massage is to enhance the general health and well-being of the recipient. Massage does not include the diagnosis of a specific pathology, the prescription of drugs or controlled substances, spinal manipulation or those acts of physical therapy that are outside the scope of massage therapy.

Bodywork Bodywork is a term used in alternative medicine or complementary medicine to describe any therapeutic, healing or personal development work that involves some form of touching, energetic work or the physical manipulation of a practically oriented physical and somatic understanding of the body. Some examples of bodywork include: deep tissue massage, Alexander Technique, lymph massage, Shiatsu massage, lomi-lomi, acupressure warm stone massage, sports massage, reflexology the Trager Approach, yoga, tai chi and Reiki. As you can see from this list, bodywork is incredibly varied, and the approach in each modality varies radiCOURTESY cally, depending on the style Massage Envy and the training the practitioner has received. in La Jolla la jolla visitor guide

Energy work Practitioners of this range of therapies find blockages or stagnations in the energy field in and around the body and restore its proper circulation and balance, stimulating the body’s innate healing capacity. The practitioner uses subtle touch or holding on specific points to harmonize the flow of energy through the body and to enhance the body’s structural balance. Energy work is effective in promoting the healing of many conditions and promoting well-being on all levels. Some types of energy work are tai chi, EFT, Polarity Therapy and Reiki. about la jolla All about the artists In 1894, Anna Held, wife of composer Max Heinrich, created the Green Dragon Colony of La Jolla, a group of galleries overlooking La Jolla Cove, which provided a sanctuary for famous artists. Held, the former governess to Ulysses S. The history of La Jolla First inhabitants

A

rtifacts have been found throughout La Jolla over the decades, indicating that Kumeyaay Indians settled along the shoreline nearly 10,000 years ago. Archaeologists have found stone utensils and Indian metates. Unfortunately, the remains are small and scattered, leaving historians unclear about the fate of these earliest inhabitants.

Modern settlers The lands of La Jolla became incorporated as part of San Diego in 1850. However, there were no permanent settlers in this section of town until 19 years later when two brothers, Daniel and Samuel Sizer, each bought a plot here. The City of San Diego sold these 80-acre plots for the price of $1.25 per acre. Little did the Sizer brothers know that their plots of land, located between present-day Fay Street and La Jolla Boulevard, would be worth nearly $2 million per acre by the present day. When Frank Botsford arrived in San Diego in 1886, he wrote in his diary, “Magnificent day at La Jolla!” Like the Sizer brothers, Botsford purchased a plot of land and began developing it. With the help of George Heald, who purchased one-quarter interest of the property, Botsford surveyed and subdivided the land. Although Botsford could not find drinkable water in the

In the 1890s, the railroad extended to La Jolla, enabling additional growth. Around this time, real estate developers began to take an interest in the coastal property of La Jolla, constructing resorts to attract visitors from San Diego and the inland region. La Jolla Park Hotel opened its doors in 1893, and cottage-style homes began to appear along Prospect Street and Girard Avenue. It was during this time that La Jolla first became an artist colony and newspaper heiress Ellen Browning Scripps settled here. She was extraordinarily generous with her wealth, and her name

about la jolla Flowery names In the early 1900s, the first homes in La Jolla sold for what was considered exorbitant amounts at the time (as much as $150,000). Instead of having house numbers, they had such names as Wisteria, Vine, Fig Tree and Starpine. Today, the Wisteria Cottage is home to the La Jolla Historical Society. In 2009, Ellen Clark Revelle, widow of UC San Diego founder Roger Revelle and namesake of her great-aunt, Ellen Browning Scripps, and daughter Mary Revelle Paci donated the historic 1904 cottage and its surrounding grounds to the society and the commmunity.

20th Century development La Jolla has grown dramatically from its 350 residents in 1900. When tourism began to make its mark, by the end of World War I, La Jolla grew

to 4,000. During this era, the beach cottage look began to give way to the elegant California Spanish style. As elsewhere in the nation, the 1929 stock market crash devastated local development and only a few houses were built until after World War II. When World War II began, 7,700 people called La Jolla home. After the War,

Staying here was such a deal Los Apartments de Sevilla, renamed La Valencia Hotel, was originally designed as an apartment hotel when it opened its doors in 1926. La Valencia cost its owners, McArthur Gorton and Roy Wiltsie, $200,000 to build, a great financial risk at the time. The apartment/hotel combo offered room rates at $2.50 per person, including maid service, hot and cold water, steam heat, refrigeration and electricity, telephone and laundry service. It underwent a series of structural changes before becoming the world-class hotel it is today.

La Jolla today Remnants of La Jolla’s early settlers are still evident throughout the town, from the names of key institutions to the eclectic form of architecture, which has evolved over the decades. La Jolla is host to world-renowned research institutions, breathtaking beaches, distinguished art galleries and top-notch restaurants. The residents of La Jolla are some of the most actively engaged in all of San Diego, advocating for or against numerous causes that affect their community.
