A FRIENDLY RIVALRY

Scott Ackley, branch manager of US Bank in Rancho Bernardo, and Earl Boyll, owner/operator of Poway-based San Diego Pest & Termite, shake hands as they launch their 2016 Rancho Bernardo Honorary Mayor campaigns. The good-natured contest sponsored by the Rancho Bernardo Business Association will have the candidates selling “votes” to their supporters throughout the summer. Votes are $5 each or six for $25 and voters will be entered into prize drawings. There will also be campaign parties. Proceeds will benefit local groups. The campaigns end in mid-October. To buy Ackley’s tickets, call him at 760-216-1803. For Boyll’s, call him at 858-603-3901.

Be forever remembered through Pathway of Pride plaque BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK The deadline is nearing to contribute $1,000 so you can have a plaque installed in Rancho Bernardo’s Pathway of Pride this year. Donations must be received by Monday, Aug. 1 in order to be included in the Aug. 25 unveiling ceremony in Webb Park. To purchase a plaque, contact Dave Brooks at 858-945-1616 or davebrooks@san.rr.com. The pathway, which outlines the sidewalk that winds through the park, is a way to support the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation’s grant program and be honored — or honor an individual, business or group — permanently in the community. Since 1988, the foundation’s grants

program supports projects and organizations that focus on senior services, youth activities, recreation, the arts, educational enhancement, civic enhancement and community protection. They are presented in November at the Rancho Bernardo Thanksgiving Luncheon. The $1,000 donations required for a plaque purchase are tax-deductible because they go to the foundation’s endowment that was created in 1993 and now exceeds $1.4 million. Brooks, the Pathway of Pride chairman, said there are 272 plaques in the pathway and he anticipates at least 10 more will be added this year.

BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK The rapid timeline to start filling Webb Lake with well water has hit a speed bump thanks to a San Diego Gas & Electric bureaucratic procedure that could delay the project up to three months, according to Scott Lawn. Lawn, who came up with and led the Save Webb Lake campaign last fall to raise money to drill a well in Webb Park, said the drilling company hit a "motherload" of water within days of starting work in early June. While they were hoping for water pressure of 35 to 50 gallons per minute, they got 200 gallons per minute after drilling down 405 feet. They predicted water would be reached 400 to 1,200 feet below ground. He said they installed a 12-inch steel pipe and cement casing, and have capped the water until pumping equipment is attached. This week they were to start work on the underground vault next to the well, where equipment to operate it will be concealed. Pipes also have to be run underground to transport water from the well to the nearby lake. This should take about two weeks. The snag, however, is getting SDG&E approval to install an electric meter nearby and run electricity to the site. SDG&E officials met with Lawn and the crew last week and reportedly said an easement study might be required, a process taking up to three months. Lawn said as an alternative they could tap into the park’s current meter near Courtyard by Marriott, but that would require digging a long trench through the park, something those involved would rather not do because of the expense and additional impact on park landscaping. If SDG&E does not expedite the process, he said another alternative is to use a generator for a couple months so the lake can be filled with well water during the upcoming hot months. Lake water is eventually used to irrigate the park’s landscaping. Once operational, he said well maintenance and electric costs will be paid for by the Bernardo Town Center Property Owners Association because it owns the park. The well project is being funded by around $100,000 collected in community and local government contributions.
