BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Residential and commercial burglaries in 4S Ranch have each declined by at least 50 percent this year, but there was an uptick in violent crimes, according to the community’s 2016 crime statistics.

Those stats also show the total number of crimes reported in 4S Ranch during the first half of 2016 compared to 2015 did not change, with 67 crimes reported each year. But there were sharp variations in some types of crimes committed.

According to statistics reported on ARJIS, the Automated Regional Justice Information System, violent crime rose by five incidents, going from three reported from January to June 2015 to eight during the same six months this year. The increase in violent crimes was due to aggravated assaults, which went rose from two to seven

incidents. There was also one reported robbery (none the year prior), but no reported rapes, unlike in 2015 when there was one. Property crimes declined by five incidents, going from 64 in the first half of 2015 to 59 in the first half of 2016. Residential burglaries dropped by SEE CRIME, A12

Interim PUSD superintendent accepts new job BY EMILY SORENSEN Poway Unified School District’s interim superintendent is leaving after less than a week on the job to run the San Diego County Office of Education on a temporary basis. Edward Velasquez was hired in June by the Poway board to replace fired Supt. John Collins. He started on Aug. 1 and was expected to stay on for several months while the district searched for

and hired a permanent replacement. However, the San Diego County Board of Education announced following an Aug. 3 evening meeting it had hired Velasquez as an interim superintendent, replacing Randy Ward, who has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into his compensation; a similar situation that occurred in late April with Collins.

The county board was to meet again on Wednesday, Aug. 10 to work out details regarding Velasquez’s pay and starting date. Velasquez said last week that he applied for the position in late July, after a colleague called him and told him he should apply. He did not identify the colleague. Poway Unified board members were to meet in SEE INTERIM, A12
