BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Hundreds of people gathered at the Rancho Bernardo Library on Monday morning to view the solar eclipse. Those of all ages and from many communities — Rancho Bernardo, Poway and Lakeside were among those mentioned by attendees — stood in front of the library or on its patio to view the event during the “sky party,” one of 26 held at San Diego Public Library branches on Monday. RB Library staff distributed professionally-made solar viewing glasses while supplies lasted, but those lucky enough to receive a free pair to safety view the event were seen sharing their glasses with strangers standing nearby. A wide assortment of other devices were also used to safely view the moon passing in front of the sun. These included pinhole viewers created out of cereal boxes, paper plates and pieces of cardboard. Many held up their cell phones — shielded by a pair of solar viewing glasses — to record the event. John Jaseniuk used a welder’s mask to look up at the sun, while he also used a colander to create multiple images on the ground for his young son, Trace, to see the shadow created by the moon. San Diego to have 100 percent renewable energy by 2035 BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Rancho Bernardans can learn tonight (Thursday) about the City of San Diego possibly taking on the energy purchasing function currently held by San Diego Gas & Electric in order to help the environment for decades to come. A forum featuring energy policy advocates on various sides of the Community Choice Energy discussion will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Ed Brown Center for Active Adults, 18402 W. Bernardo Drive in Rancho Bernardo Community Park. The free event is being co-hosted by the Rancho Bernardo Community Council and Planning Board. After each speaker gives a 10-minute presentation the audience may ask questions, according to forum organizers. The speakers will be Mark Hughes, a mechanical engineer with the Climate Action Campaign; Herman C. Collins, owner/proprietor of the Collins Group, a

strategic planning and government relations consulting firm; and Peder Norby, a sustainability practitioner and consultant who served on the San Diego County Planning Commission and former chairman of the Technical Advisory Committee that drafted San Diego County’s Renewable Energy Master Plan. If adopted, the energy purchasing function would transfer from SDG&E to the city, so the latter can decide which types of energy sources to purchase, including renewables like wind and solar energy. San Diego would remain part of SDG&E’s power grid and customers would still receive their electric bills from SDG&E. According to the city’s website, San Diego is trying to reach 100 percent renewable energy for residents and businesses by 2035 in order “to create a cleaner and healthier San Diego that will benefit (the) community now and for future generations.” The Climate Action SEE ENERGY, A11
