BY EMILY SORENSEN Poway Unified School District students have scored well over the state and county averages in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress. This statewide assessment replaced the Standardized Testing and Reporting program and is part of the state’s Common Core requirements. The assessments were taken by students in grades three through eight as well as grade 11. This is the second year that the test has been given in California.
While all PUSD schools scored above the state average scores, some schools did better than others. The highest-ranked school, both of elementary schools and overall, was Deer Canyon Elementary School. Students earn one of four scores on the test in both math and English: standards exceeded, standards met, standards nearly met and standards not met. In PUSD, 67 percent of students who took the CAASPP met or exceeded state math standards,
compared to 37 percent statewide. In English, 76 percent of PUSD students met or exceeded state standards, compared to 49 percent statewide. Both of these show small increases from last year, where 65 percent of PUSD students met or exceeded math standards and 73 percent met
or exceeded English standards. PUSD scored much higher than the county average, which was 44 percent of students in San Diego County meeting or exceeding math standards and 56 percent of students meeting or exceeding English standards. While all PUSD schools scored above the state average scores, some schools did better than others. The highest-ranked school, both of elementary schools and overall, was SEE PUSD, A10
More businesses coming to Del Sur Town Center Some open now, most opening in 2017 BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK More businesses have signed leases for the Del Sur Town Center, a shopping mall just west of 4S Ranch anchored by Target. Accessible from Rancho Bernardo and 4S Ranch by traveling along Camino del Sur, the Shea Properties center — when filled — will be a mix of restaurants and specialty shops, along with some well-known national chains. Last week, center officials announced additional retailers coming to the center. They include the fitness franchise Orangetheory Fitness, which offers group personal training workouts broken into intervals of cardiovascular and strength training; Just Run, a specialty boutique that caters to all levels of walkers and runners; and the eco-friendly dry-cleaning company Ogden’s Cleaners. The center already has a Target store, the upscale nail salon CürBar, The Bike Shop (it offers bicycle sales, service and repairs), Del Sur Ranch Dental and the recently-opened Sprouts Farmers Market. “We really wanted to establish Del Sur Town Center as a one-stop shopping, dining and gathering place for the community,” said Kiril McKee, senior vice president of retail leasing at Shea Properties. “From a healthy grocery store to a popular fitness franchise, we’ve listened to the requests of the community and brought in a mix of tenants that offer something for everyone.” Recently center officials announced four additional restaurants that will be joining the recently opened Burger Lounge, which serves American fast-casual, grass-fed burgers, and Starbucks; along with already announced Chick-fil-A (known for its chicken sandwiches), Choice Juicery (an organic, plant-based SEE BUSINESSES, A10

Harpist to perform in Rancho Bernardo Sept. 11 concert part of Brown center’s ‘Sunday Afternoons @ 3’ series
BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Harpist and singer Mair Rathburn will perform a variety of songs and share some history of her instrument during the next “Sunday Afternoons @ 3” installment. The hour-long concert will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11 at the Ed Brown Center for Active Adults, 18402 W. Bernardo Drive in Rancho Bernardo Community Park. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 12 and under. Purchase at the concert or in advance by calling 858-487-9324 or stopping by the center between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays. Rathburn calls her repertoire “eclectic” since it includes classical, folk and contemporary styles of music. “Many people come to my concerts to hear a harp, but also to see one and to ask questions about it,” Rathburn said. “In this concert coming up, I will be talking about the harp, its history and mechanical functions and demonstrating all of that with musical pieces and photos. “The harp is a very ancient instrument and a fascinating one,” she said. “I sing and play, and the pieces will range from traditional Irish harp tunes, classical, jazz and a song or two of my own. The lore of the harp is really entertaining, and I have a question and answer period afterwards so people can satisfy their curiosity
about harps.” The mostly self-taught harpist said she was introduced to harp music early on and fell in love with the history of the harp and the “incredibly haunting Irish melodies.” After starting with the Irish harp, she transitioned to a pedal harp. She plays a 1905 gold Lyon and Healy style 21 and a 2014 mahogany/bronze Lyon and Healy style 23. “The harp is primarily a melodic instrument,” she said. “For a piece to work on a solo harp, it has to have a clear, well-defined melody. ... If I hear a beautiful, clear melody in any style of music, I have to try it on the harp. If it works, it stays in my repertoire. ... I always chose songs that have lyrics that are personally meaningful to me and will not sing something that isn’t.” Rathburn has a bachelor’s degree in music with an emphasis in voice and in addition to being a harpist is often called upon to be a vocalist. She has performed with the San Francisco Civic Chorale, Golden Gate Park Band and was a soloist at Airman Memorial Chapel at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. She was also the lobby lounge harpist at the Four Seasons Resort Aviara in Carlsbad. She has released three CDs, available for purchase through CDBaby.com. Some of her music has also been played on Muzak, XM, JMX, Sirius and EWTN Radio.

Large transportation survey launched this week
Five vying for three Palomar College board seats
The San Diego Association of Governments is inviting approximately 200,000 households in San Diego County to participate in a study to help transportation planners better understand how, when, and why residents travel in the region. The results of the study will be used to help develop infrastructure projects and programs to better meet regional transportation needs. One in five households in the region will be randomly selected to participate in the San Diego Regional Transportation Study. Most participants will be asked to use a smartphone application to answer questions about their daily travel choices, with some respondents completing the study online or by phone. “Good participation by San Diego County residents in this study is vital to our region’s ability to address traffic congestion,” SANDAG Board of Directors Chairman and County Board of Supervisors Chairman Ron Roberts said. “Without accurate and up-to-date data on how residents use the transportation network, we would not be able to develop effective solutions.” Participants will be prompted to answer questions about when and where they travel; whether they drive alone, carpool, vanpool, walk, bike, or use public transit; and how much their travel activity costs (e.g., parking and transit fares).
BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Five candidates are vying for three seats on the Palomar Community College District Governing Board during the Nov. 8 election. There are three open seats. Two incumbents, John Halcon and Nancy Ann Hensch, are each seeking a second four-year term. Both were first elected to the board in 2012. Halcon is an education professor at California State University San Marcos and Hensch is a teacher who has focused on preschool, kindergarten and special education behavior intervention. Oceanside resident Nancy Chadwick, who has served four terms on the board, starting in 2002, is not seeking re-election after being a member for the past 16 years. She served three year-long terms as board president and four as board secretary. There are also three challengers in the race. They are Nina Deerfield, who lists her profession as a teacher, publisher and editor; Rose Marie Dishman, who lists herself as a retired educational executive; and Tim Fillinger, who lists himself as an engineer. Palomar College is a two-year public community college with its main campus located in San Marcos. It has other locations throughout the district that covers much of North County. Palomar officials plan on opening the college’s south education center in Rancho Bernardo in spring 2018. According to the college’s website, Palomar has approximately 30,000 full-time and part-time students working toward their associate’s degree or certificate programs, plus others enrolled in personal enrichment classes.
Traffic congestion has been an ongoing concern of inland North County residents. Participation in the confidential survey is by invitation only. The random selection process will ensure a representative sample of residents with varied demographics and travel behaviors from around the region. Participants whose households complete the study will receive either a $10 or $20 gift card per adult, depending on the method they use to complete the survey. Residents will be invited to participate on a rolling basis, through late October. All of the data is anticipated to be collected by November 2016.
A similar travel study for the San Diego region was completed in 2006. SANDAG typically conducts a study of this magnitude every 10 years. SANDAG is sponsoring Measure A, which would raise the sales tax countywide by a half-cent to fund infrastructure projects, including freeway improvements and better public transit. The ballot measure will go before voters in November and requires two-thirds approval to pass. SANDAG has engaged San Diego Association of Governments. (RSG) to help conduct this study. Flu vaccinations now available locally BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK It’s once again time to roll up your sleeve for the annual flu shot, which health experts recommend for ages 6 months through adults. While the vaccine is no guarantee one will not catch the flu, medical experts say it can help ward off the three most prevalent strains predicted by the Centers for Disease Control for the 2016-17 season and decrease the severity and length of an illness. Doing so is important because sometimes the flu can lead to complications and be fatal, even among those without pre-existing health conditions. Medical clinics and pharmacies throughout the area have started providing the vaccine, which includes strains of Influenza A, B and H1N1. Palomar Health is among those making it easy to get the vaccine. Its low-cost community clinics set up in churches, senior centers and hospitals are for ages 9 through adult. Of its 89 clinics planned, the first local one will be held on Sept. 18 in Poway. Clinics are scheduled through mid-January, though officials advise to get immunized as soon as possible. Since immunity lasts six to 12 months, the vaccine needs to be administered yearly. It takes about two weeks for immunized people to be protected from the flu virus. The new season began on July 1. During the 2015-16 season there were 6,279 confirmed flu cases in the county, with 120 of those infected requiring treatment in the ICU and 68 deaths, according to county health officials. Those who died ranged in age from 9
to 98, officials said. The final two deaths, including that of a 36-year-old, occurred in June. The season peaked in mid-to-late February. In addition to getting the vaccine, health officials say to follow tips like staying home if sick, following good hand and cough hygiene — washing hands frequently and coughing into one’s elbow — and, if possible, keeping one’s distance from those known to be ill. For young children two shots are sometimes needed — especially if never vaccinated against the flu before. Children as young as 6 months can receive the vaccine and a preservative-free version is available for pregnant women through their doctor. Children with asthma must also be vaccinated at a doctor’s office. Palomar Health’s clinics are providing the shot for $20 per person. Medicare is accepted for those who qualify. Those individuals must bring their Medicare and supplemental insurance cards. Payment is due at the clinic, payable by cash or check. The latter must include name and address imprinted by the bank and a photo ID. Receipts are available upon request. Because children younger than 9 often need two doses of influenza vaccine, they cannot be vaccinated at the community clinics. However, Palomar Health’s Expresscare Clinics can give the vaccination to those as young as 2 years. For walk-in locations and hours, go to PalomarHealth.org/expresscare. As for the Palomar Health clinics, the entire list can be viewed at tinyurl.com/PH-flu16.

Naked I-15 runner nabbed by CHP A runner made it three miles down Interstate 15 with no shoes on - or any other clothing - before the California Highway Patrol pulled him over Saturday. Plenty of motorists called 911 about 1:35 p.m. to report the naked man making his way south from about Rancho Bernardo Road in Rancho Bernardo, CHP Officer Mary Bailey said. “He had no shoes on, nothing on,” Bailey said. She said the man might be in his early 30s.
One CHP officer caught up to the man and followed him until a second officer got into position to help stop him. Bailey said their concern was that he might have been under the influence of a drug that would make him violent. But the two officers got him stopped and in custody without a struggle near Carmel Mountain Road by about 1:55 p.m. He was taken to a hospital for a psychological evaluation, Bailey said. - The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Changes in how elections are held?
S
ignificant changes in how voters across the state, including San Diego County, might cast ballots in future elections are included in a bill awaiting Gov. Jerry Brown’s signature. Whether the changes improve or hamper voter participation remains to be seen. Sponsored by Secretary of State Alex Padilla, Senate Bill 450 passed both the Assembly and Senate without significant debate. It calls for counties to be given the option of mailing ballots to every registered voter. Local neighborhood polling places would go away and be replaced by regional voting centers staffed by trained professionals. Voters would have the option of mailing their completed ballot or dropping it off at a regional center. The centers would allow voters to cast ballots up to 10 days ahead of the election anywhere in the county. New voter registrations would be accepted right up to Election Day. If signed by the governor, the new procedures would be used in about 15 counties in 2018 and by all others choosing to do so in 2020. Again, counties will have the option of keeping things the way they are now or switching to the new system. Michael Vu, San Diego County’s registrar of voters, says San Diego will not be among the first counties to switch but should be prepared to do so in 2020. SB 450 seems to be in touch with a growing trend by the state’s voters to make their election choices in the comfort of their own homes rather than waiting in line at the neighborhood polling place. Statewide, 59 percent of the state’s voters went the absentee ballot route in June. The number was even higher in San Diego County – 64 percent. Vu says that under SB 450 the county’s roughly 1,500 precincts would be replaced by about 150 voting centers. For November, about 8,000 poll workers will need to be hired, trained and paid, he said. Using the voting center concept would substantially reduce those costs, he said. The question is, will voters not yet converted to voting by mail participate in the new system? Assuming the governor signs SB 450, it will be interesting to find out.

OUR READERS WRITE Backs housing for vets I applaud Poway City Councilmen Jim Cunningham and John Mullin for their support of the affordable housing for veterans in Poway. I am appalled that so many Powegians spoke out against this housing proposal at the Aug. 16 City Council meeting. I have to wonder if the 22 town homes to be built by Habitat for Humanity were luxury units, if there would have been any complaints at all? We are privileged to live in a community with excellent schools, roads, library, parks and the lowest crime rate in the county. Why can't we share our good fortune with 22 military families? How much traffic could 22 families really add to Poway? Is this about traffic or home values? This is Poway's chance to do something to support low- and moderate-income military families. For those councilmen who are "not there yet," we are watching you. Please don't use our military veterans for your flag waving and empty political promises. Do the right thing and show your actual support for military families by approving this affordable housing. The complainers don't speak for me. I welcome these military families with open arms. Deborah Boyd Poway
City attorney ‘rude’ I have recently attended two Poway City Council meetings. In each of the meetings the city attorney, Morgan L. Foley, was asked a question by, in the first meeting Councilman Barry Leonard, in the second meeting Councilman Dave Grosch. I felt the city attorney was terribly rude and disrespectful toward these council members. I don't know if he is like this to the other council members when they ask questions, but no one deserves to be spoken to as this man spoke to these members. City Council members give up much of their time for little in compensation other than to give to the community. They deserve a civil response to
questions. If Mr. Foley can't be bothered to answer questions civilly, maybe the council should hire an attorney who can. Pamela Skeen Poway
Helpers needed Recently two nimble lady volunteers from the Backyard Produce Project plucked 176 pounds of Valencia oranges off my one mature tree. The oranges will go into several programs which provide food for needy families. On this slightly foggy morning they showed up at 8 a.m. and had the tree stripped in under 45 minutes. A shout out for them helping me to help others. All they ask for is more volunteers, to make free fruit and vegetables available to the needy. You are needed not just to pick fruit, but also to assist in driving. Contact them at www.backyard-produce-project.wikispaces.com or 858-204-9643. Suzanne Emery Poway
Explain this, Amy If, as columnist Amy Roost claimed on Aug. 18, politics aren’t rigged, then why is the following lawsuit being filed? The suit includes six claims: fraud, negligent misrepresentation, deceptive conduct, monetary restitution for donors of Bernie Sanders, the Democratic National Committee breaking its own fiduciary duties and negligence for failing to protect sensitive donor information that was hacked. Attorneys Jared Beck, a Harvard Law graduate, and Elizabeth Beck, a Yale Law School graduate, have previously filed successful lawsuits against Yelp, Unilever, Korea Airlines and fraudulent real estate investors. Beck and Lee noted this lawsuit was a way to give a voice to Sanders supporters who were silenced by the rigging of the primaries for Clinton. Solomon Pinczewski Poway

Traits of our best presidents
R
ecently I read books about the presidencies of John Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. Even though the two were from different political parties and were driven by different political ideologies, it is striking how much they had in common. It is even more striking how those commonalities are lacking in recent presidents and current presidential candidates from both parties. The similarities and differences reminded me of a study I read decades ago that compared Japanese leadership styles to those found in the U.S. The study, described in the 1982 book “The Art of Japanese Management” by Richard Pascale and Anthony Athos, was a quest to discover the key differences that made Japanese companies more successful than American companies during a time when Japan was enjoying dynamic economic growth and the U.S. economy was losing ground. Instead of finding dramatic differences between U.S. companies and Japanese companies in general, however, they discovered something drastically different. The surprise was that top performing companies in both countries had more in common than lower performing
companies. Low performers also had more in common, regardless of country. In other words, leadership traits were more a predictor of success than was nationality! As I studied the Kennedy and Reagan presidencies, the findings of Athos and Pascale pushed to the forefront of my reflections. We’ve clearly had good and bad presidents from both parties, the same as we’ve had good and bad companies in both Japan and the U.S. Therefore, it is not much of leap to think that leadership traits, rather than party, probably differentiate the good from the bad. That part is easy. The harder part is to identify what made the good ones good and the bad ones bad. Having studied leadership for decades, I couldn’t help but speculate about leadership traits that would most likely be associated with effective versus ineffective presidential leadership. Here are the highlights of my musings. The first trait that jumped out at me was vision. Both Kennedy and Reagan inspired people to move toward a vision that encapsulated the best of what America could bring to itself and the world. They communicated their visions well. They
also inspired people to buy into their vision. Yes, they had detractors (leaders in any partisan system will always have detractors), but more people around the world were inspired than pushed back. Most important, their actions were forceful and aligned with their words. They earned credibility — even to their detractors — and built a foundation of trust from which they strengthened America’s legacy and reinforced the values of our founding fathers to our nation while projecting them to the world. The second trait possessed by Kennedy and Reagan is that although both were loyal to their parties, they were loyal to country first. Both made decisions that were not the most popular decisions to their base or key supporters, but right for the country. Although they stood up for the party line, at the end of the debate, they rose above party loyalty and voted for the good of the country. Any list of traits differentiating presidents who excelled and those that flopped would be lengthy. It would be fascinating to have the time to identify and define the full list. But there is one more quality worthy of mention here. Both saw themselves as servants to our nation and to the world, albeit in different ways. Yes, both were astute politicians out of necessity. But both saw political maneuvering as a means to achieving noble end results — not as the end itself. This is a far cry from what exists today. Lyles, a Poway resident, is a management consultant and best-selling author. Reader comments, either online or through letters to the editor, are encouraged.

July 5, 1924 - July 30, 2016 Poway — Mom passed today. Mom was tough, hard, she raised three sons, my brothers and I. To say we were a handful was a bit of an understatement. She persevered, we survived, grew up to be men she could be proud of. Beloved. I have learned that adults raise all the children they encounter, no matter who sired them, no matter their age. That is how one becomes Beloved. one cares about people beyond themselves, Mom was that, Beloved. when she retired from UPS, the people she left were sadden by her retirement, she didn’t actually retire, she volunteered at the local police department. when I brought her to be with me, she volunteered at the hospital. She worked until she no longer could. She cared for the people she raised and worked with until she passed. She set a high bar, we persevere, my brothers and I. Grace. It turns out when one brings their mother to live with their wife, there will be issues. women neither offer nor experience love the way men do. I have learned that observing my mother and my wife. My wife was polite, respectful as she learned to share her world with Mom. In the end she helped to care for her as only a daughter would. That would be my definition of Grace. My wife

owns significantly more than her fare share. Her grandchildren will now be required to meet her through her sons. She’s there, here…within me. But I am sorry for their loss. They will no longer have the opportunity to know her personally. Her life, now complete. Today I’m left with only one question I wish I had had the foresight to ask my mother. How does one gracefully accept the passing of a Loving Mother? and I wonder, is it a lesson that each of us must find an answer to on their own. It will be the last lesson of her life and I am indeed fortunate to have it, to have shared her life as her son. Please sign the guest book online at legacy.com/ obituaries/pomeradonews.

Titans’ Chinn captures Vaquero Stampede title The first cross country race of the season could not have gone any better for Jarett Chinn. The Poway High senior, who has captured back-to-back 800-meter section titles on the track, opened his year with a first-place finish in the junior/senior division I at the Vaquero Stampede on Saturday. He crossed the taper of the 2.15-mile course at Lindo Lakes in Lakeside in 10-minutes, 13-seconds. Chinn’s win combined with two other Titans finishing in the top 10 of the race, helped Poway win the team title with 39 points. Michael Downs (10:29) took fifth, Kyle Kesler (10:32) took sixth and Zach Kraft (10:53) took 11th to lead the way for Poway. Del Norte boys won the junior/senior division II title. Matthew Earney led the Nighthawks with a fourth-place finish, coming in at 10:39. Igor Landa (10:46) took sixth and Jaron Farnham (11:00) finished in ninth place. The Rancho Bernardo boys and girls will open their season with the Bronco Round-up on Sept. 10 at Kit Carson Park.

Nighthawks thrilled to join Palomar League BY TERRY MONAHAN For the first time since it opened in the fall of 2009, Del Norte High will be competing against the other Poway Unified School District volleyball teams in the as a member of the Palomar League. The Nighthawks’ inaugural season will include the district’s other schools Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Mt. Carmel and Westview - as well as Mission Vista. “It’s been a long time coming where we will play Poway and Westview twice during league play,’’ first-year Del Norte coach Ashton O’Halloran, a former player at Mt. Carmel when the Sundevils played in the Palomar League. “They are so excited for this. I might be more nervous than they are. They can’t wait to play against all their friends from travel ball from around the district. “They’ve kind of felt cheated that they have never done that.’’ Del Norte is coming off a fine 22-10 season in 2015 as they prepare for their first year in the Palomar League.Del Norte will open the league season Sept. 28 against Rancho Bernardo.

O’Halloran has more than enough height at the net with seven players 5-foot-10 or taller to throw out there. “I think we have the biggest team in the league this year,’’ O’Halloran said. “This is a great year to join the Palomar because we’re good enough to play in it and win it.’’ Rivers,

Del Norte High girls volleyball coach Ashton O'Halloran is excited to have her program in the Palomar League. Medin, a first-team All-Avocado East League honoree, Clyde, Schuette and Borduan are all seniors. Henderson and Kay are juniors and Yee, a sophomore, will form the nucleus for next year’s effort. Kay and Rivers were second-team all-leaguers last fall.
Poway ■ Coach: Breezy Ambort ■ 2015 record: 10-21 ■ Division: I ■ Key players: L-DS Brennan Sieber, OH-DS Ashley Pyle, OH Sarah Williams, MB Allie Saeger, MB Sadie Hamson. ■ Outlook: Three years removed from back-to-back appearances in the San Diego Section Division I championship match, losing to Torrey Pines and Rancho Buena Vista, the Titans begin the long climb back toward the top after a rocky 2015 season. One thing Ambort has tried to fix this year after graduating four
starters last year is finishing sets strongly instead of surrendering points at the end of matches. “This year we need to be consistent from start to finish,’’ Ambort said. “The girls are willing to do the work. They want to compete better this year.’’ Sieber and Pyle will be counted on the lead the Titans back this year. Williams and Saeger gained valuable experience last year. RB High set for home opener against El Camino MONTE UMSTED
Poway High’s Jarrett Chinn, shown here after winning the section’s 800-meter title last year, is off to a great start for the cross country team.
BY MICHAEL BOWER The opening week of the high school football season resulted in a 3-1 record for local teams. Rancho Bernardo, Poway and Maranatha Christian each picked up season-opening victories. The Broncos hope to keep it going in their home opener Friday night at 7 against El Camino. The last time
Rancho Bernardo was on its home field it celebrated a state championship. The Titans will try to move to 2-0 for the second straight year with a win over Mt. Miguel, while Del Norte looks for its first victory of the year at Fallbrook. Maranatha Christian will seek its second win under first-year coach Kyle Duggin at Calipatria. Here is a quick
glance at this week’s games:
Non-League El Camino (1-0) at No. 5 Rancho Bernardo (1-0), Friday 7 p.m. Last week: El Camino beat Point Loma 21-8; Rancho Bernardo beat Eastlake 38-0. Notes: Both schools opened the season with victories and
are looking to keep it going Friday night. Everybody expected the Broncos offense to explode for a lot of points with nine returning starters, but the defense pitching a shutout in the first game was certainly not expected. ■ 2015 record: 17-10-1 ■ Division: I ■ Key players: MF Isabelle Flud, D Lauren Whitney, D Ari Hooper, F Lauren Leland, F Emily Plummer. ■ Outlook: The new-look Titans return a pair of scorers from last year in Flud, who had 11 goals and three assists, and Leland, who had 10 goals and 10 assists. Whitney, Flud and Hooper were chosen as team captains. “The girls have brought a different mental outlook to the season,’’ Parrish said. “That may be a result of last year. They now know they can compete with anyone.’’
BY TERRY MONAHAN Just two years ago, Poway High limped home with just five victories in the regular season. Last season was completely different for the Titans. After a 5-16-1 season in 2014, Poway rebounded with a 17-10-1 overall record and a 6-4 record in Palomar League, behind only Torrey Pines (24-3, 10-0) and Canyon Crest (19-4, 8-2) under first-year coaches Brittany Parrish and Morgan Re. The Titans ended that ’14 season with four straight losses. “Last year was a huge step up for the girls,’’ Parrish said. “Their focus on the field and their conditioning was vastly improved.’’ Poway, however, graduated nine seniors off last year’s squad.

■ Coach: Katy Sirota ■ 2015 record: 4-15 ■ Division: II ■ Key players: CMF Nina Balen, F Katy Graham, D Breanna Gunderson, MF Julia Stevens, F Laura Doumoux. ■ Outlook: The Broncos must rebuild their defense that was stripped by graduation. That remains the biggest question mark for Sirota, a former player at Serra. Gunderson was a midfielder, but moved back to defense to help fill that void. Balen and Graham have demonstrated strong skills this fall, especially since injuries have already popped up. Stevens handles game pressure well enough to be counted on. Doumoux made the jump from the JV by showing off a new confidence she did display last season. “Besides the defense, I’m really concerned about conditioning,’’ Sirota said. “They all have to be ready to go. The girls cannot get tired. That’s not allowed. A couple of them got tired at the scrimmage and that’s not a good sign.’’ Rancho Bernardo started the season at home Wednesday against Bonita Vista with just one substitute.

Titans’ Adelman conditioned to last

BY MICHAEL BOWER Jared Adelman stays after each Poway High football practice with some of his teammates for optional conditioning. The group runs 10 100-yard sprints, hoping it helps keep them going strong deep into the fourth quarter of games. If last Friday night was any indication, it works. Adelman, a 6-foot, 1-inch, 180-pound running back, carried the ball 45 times for 291 yards in the Titans’ 33-14 victory over defending San Diego Section Division III champion Bonita Vista. He rushed nine times for 55 yards on the opening possession of the game and 13 times for 59 yards on the Titans’ final possession. “I feel pretty sore,” chuckled Adelman on Sunday evening. “Forty-five times is a lot. I certainly didn’t expect it. We just kept calling ‘Power’ over and over again. I loved it and I have to give it up to my offensive line because they just dominated.” Adelman finished with a career-best 291 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. The Titans called “Power Left” or “Power Right” (both running plays that pound off the left and right of the center) a combined 36 times in the game. The young offensive line created a surge on nearly all of them. “We averaged over five yards a carry on that one play,” Poway coach Damian

Jared Adelman, shown here during a game last season, rushed for 291 yards and two TDs on 45 carries Friday night. Gonzalez said. “The incredible thing is not one kid on that offensive line is a returning starter, but Jared did great. He really ran pads over and had great leg drive, so that was outstanding.” And Adelman still had plenty left in the tank, even after the clock struck all zeros. “Usually, I cramp up during the game,” he said. “But I didn’t feel anything at all out there. I felt great. I was not even tired to be honest.” Adelman is used to being on the field for nearly every snap. He starts at cornerback, punt returner

and is the snapper for punts and PATs. Adelman did not play defense on Friday night, because Gonzalez knew he was going to get a lot of carries. Of course, he never pictured it being 45 carries. “Not a chance,” said Gonzalez, noting that his starting quarterback Tristan Hughes was out with a finger injury and that led to more attempts for Adelman. “It just came down to the fact that we thought we had an advantage on a particular play so we kept running it over and over.” Adelman spent the summer conditioning in a speed program called, “Step Academy,” for the first time. At 6-1, he is taller than most running backs, but Gonzalez thinks his frame can be very deceiving to defenses. “He has the power, but he is also extremely fast,” Gonzalez said. “People misjudge his speed and agility. He is pretty darn talented.” Adelman describes his style in a similar way. “I think of myself as an elusive, bulldozing guy,” he said. “I will juke you first, but I will run you over when I have to. FROM FOOTBALL, B1 picked up right where it left off with by allowing just two completed passes. Leo Wagner picked off a pass and Christian Baker recovered a fumble, as Eastlake did not even make it inside the 20-yard line. Fresno State-bound QB Mark Salazar made up for the absence of RB Milan Grice (ankle injury) with a pair of rushing TDs and another through the air. Eight different receivers caught passes for the Broncos in the win ... El Camino was led by a pair of juniors in its victory. RB Chris Brown rushed for 155 yards and two TDs, while QB Jaden Casey completed 10-of-15 passes for 146 yards. WR Wayne Steward had five catches ... Expect a bit more of a test for the Broncos in this one, but with their defense showing they are primed to be elite again they should be able to roll into Week 3 with a 2-0 record. Prediction: Rancho Bernardo 34, El Camino 13 **** Poway (1-0) at Mount Miguel (0-1), Friday 7 p.m. Last week: Poway beat Bonita Vista 33-14; Mount Miguel lost to Chula Vista 35-30. Notes: The Titans are looking to start the season 2-0 for the second straight year, while Mount Miguel hopes to avoid its first 0-2 start since 2004. The Titans, playing without starting QB Tristan Hughes (finger injury), turned plenty of heads around the county last week after its young offensive line led a pounding running attack against the defending section Division III champion Barons. RB Jared Adelman had 291 yards and two touchdowns on a whopping 45 carries. Backup QB Robbie Sullivan tossed three TD passes, as the Titans certainly looked like a

The Matadors had a chance at the end to pull out a victory against Chula Vista, but a fumble at the 30-yard line ended those hopes. Mount Miguel runs a spread offense with talented QB Benny Valadez, who can beat you through the air or on the ground. He had a 72-yard rushing TD last week ... Expect the Titans to pound the ball with plenty of success again in this one, as Mount Miguel was torched on the ground last week. Prediction: Poway 35, Mount Miguel 10 **** Del Norte (0-1) at Fallbrook (0-1), Friday 7 p.m. Last week: Del Norte lost to Carlsbad 28-0; Fallbrook lost to Westview 14-0. Notes: A pair of teams still searching for their first points of the 2016 season will collide in this one. The Nighthawks allowed seven sacks and were intercepted twice by the Lancers in last week’s loss. The defense
allowed QB Isaiah Ramoa to complete 10-of-13 passes for 136 yards and a TD for Carlsbad. Del Norte, who struggled to score points last season, will look to get RB Robby Hauck and WR D’Angelo Gunter going in this one. The Nighthawks played the Warriors in the regular-season finale last year and fell 21-6 ... Fallbrook is playing its first year under coach Bob Burt. The Warriors turned in a strong defensive effort, but the offense sputtered against the Wolverines. Fallbrook saw 45 running plays last week and recovered two fumbles ... Expect this one to be a battle down to the wire, but for the Nighthawks’ defense to stand strong in the end and hold on for a victory. Prediction: Del Norte 14, Fallbrook 7 **** Maranatha Christian (1-0) at Calipatria (0-1), Friday 7 p.m. Last week: Maranatha beat Francis Parker 23-0; Calipatria lost to Escondido Charter 24-6. Notes: The Eagles did not waste any time getting new coach Kyle Duggin his first victory. The former defensive coordinator for Maranatha had to be pleased after the Eagles posted their third shutout dating back to last season. James Palmer recovered a fumble for a TD and Trevor Sheng led the team with 12 tackles. Sheng also paced the offense, rushing for two TDs ... Calipatria gave up three sacks, a blocked punt and lost a fumble in its loss to Escondido Charter. The defense allowed just 153 yards rushing on 41 carries and picked off a pass, but it was not enough to overcome the costly mistakes ... Expect the Eagles to smother Calipatria and light up the scoreboard on offense behind Sheng and the running game. Prediction: Maranatha 42, Calipatria 0
FROM VOLLEYBALL, B1 (1991-93) while playing volleyball for rival Poway when her last name was Milling. She also was an All-CIF basketball player at Poway as well. The only time the Broncos have played in the CIF finals was 1994 when they downed Poway for the title, a year after Hanes, who had two brothers play basketball at Poway as well, went off to UCLA. The strength of the Broncos is outside with Kallen, a junior, and Pierce, a senior. Castillo, also a senior, holds down the middle as the team experiments with running a 5-1 or 6-2 attack on offense. Malone and Bartholomew are 5-3 and 5-6, respectively. Monahan is a freelance writer.

He may love breaking free, but with his extra conditioning, he makes sure his body is ready to pound, pound, pound.

ENTERTAINMENT
Mojalet begins 25th season Sept. 17, 18 BY EMILY SORENSEN Mojalet Dance Collective’s 25th season will begin Sept. 17 and 18 with “Holding on and Finding Ground.” The dance company makes its home at the Vine Theater at the Bernardo Winery, 13330 Paseo del Verano Norte. “This year is a jubilee, it’s really celebratory,” said Faith Jensen-Ismay, artistic director of Mojalet Dance Collective. “Holding On and Finding Ground” will be performed at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18. Tickets are $15 general admission, $10 students and seniors. This evening long work was choreographed by Jensen-Ismay and features Mojalet’s professional company of dancers Lyndsey Gemmell, Andrew Holmes, Alia Ismay, Sadie Ismay, Robby Johnson, Mandy Langen-Kramp, Kathryn McLean and Christina Wurz. The show is making its San Diego debut after being first performed in Switzerland in June 2016, with original live music by Rhythm Talk. It is described as a “personal journey shared with others as each individual tries to find purpose and significance,” according to a press release. In October, Mojalet’s “Enchanted and Endangered” show returns Oct. 14, 15 and 16 at the Lyceum Space Theater, 79 Horton

Sadie and Alia Ismay perform in "Enchanted and Endangered." Plaza. Tickets are $35 general, $25 students and seniors, with a $10 discount of tickets purchased before Sept. 17. This original, contemporary dance performance features aerial work and set design, which are fairly unique to modern dance pieces, said Jensen-Ismay. “We’re working as a company to bring stronger production value in modern dance,” she said. “(Modern dance performances) are often just dance (without sets) and we want to step it up a notch.” “Enchanted and Endangered” is set in an

enchanted forest invaded by campers who are destructive and disrespectful to the creatures living there. They establish relationships and work to reconcile, according to the press release. December brings “Jubilee – 25th Season Celebration Concert,” Dec. 9, 10 and 11 at the Coronado School of the Arts, 555 D Avenue in Coronado. Tickets range from $10 to $20. Mojalet Dance Collective will be partnering with the Coronado School of the Arts to celebrate its silver anniversary and
COSA’s 20th anniversary, with Mojalet premiering “The Mercy Trilogy by Faith Jensen-Ismay: Endure, Compassion and Mercy.” This new work is about humanity, said Jensen-Ismay, and the search everyone goes through in life to find what it means to ensure and have mercy. Mojalet will celebrate its silver anniversary further in February with its “Silver Anniversary Alumni Concert,” Feb. 11 and 12 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, 340 North Escondido Blvd. Tickets range from $15 to $25. This concert will feature several dancers from the dance collective’s beginnings returning to perform. Jensen-Ismay said about a dozen dancers have confirmed that they will return for the concert. The dancers will perform The Mercy Trilogy as well as excerpts from Mojalet works over the past 25 years. Finishing up Mojalet’s 25th season will be its annual fundraiser “Café Mojalet – Silver to Gold,” March 13 at the Poway Community Park auditorium. Tickets are $35 assigned seating, $25 general admission. This fundraiser includes live performances and food and drinks. Mike Shirk a valued member of watecolor society
J
ohn Michael (“Mike”) Shirk new allowed his disability to stop him from being an active painter and invaluable member of The San Diego Watercolor Society. After studying engineering, English literature, marketing and business administration and having a 40-year career as an advertising copywriter, Shirk was diagnosed with a rare, untreatable muscle disease, Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM). After retiring in 1999, he needed to find something he could put his active mind to and SDWS was the fortunate beneficiary of his new interest in painting watercolors. “I enjoy it because it’s a challenge, and a lot harder than I ever imagined,” Shirk once said. “There are a lot of skills and information to learn that I had never appreciated before.” The Poway artist died Aug. 21 at the age of 75. Shirk joined SDWS in 2000 and quickly put his heart and soul into the organization, volunteering for everything from coordinator of paintouts to membership director, international exhibition director and finally president. Always the engineer, he quickly designed a painting platform that was the envy of his fellow plein air artists. By adapting some existing equipment and building other pieces he created something that met all his needs. The basic rig was a field easel, an art bag, a cheap plastic carrying case and a canvas bag that fit over the scooter arm. A work table made out of gatorboard was placed on the scooter arms. He could travel up to several miles from his van and then set up and start painting within minutes. He used his IPad and drawing applications to create his studies for his larger paintings. As membership director, his organizational skills — in his own words, compulsive — led him to develop a database solution for that job since it required keeping track of more than 750 members. “I enjoyed getting up, so to speak, in the morning and seeing true purpose in the way I would spend my day,” Shirk said. In 2005, his wife of 27 years, Beth, an artist in her own right, was diagnosed with a different, yet equally rare and untreatable form of muscular dystrophy. Together they met the challenges of daily living. As he could no longer walk, Shirk traded his first van for a wheelchair van equipped with a ramp so he could drive into the van and safely transport both of them.
Mike Shirk About this time they moved in the Huntington Manor, an assisted living facility in Poway. Beth passed away in 2012. While serving as president of SDWS, Shirk was given the highest honor of being elected “life member.” He was instrumental in the financial planning and logistics for SDWS’ move to its current 4,000-square-foot gallery in the arts district at Liberty Station. All the while Shirk was painting. One of his most successful paintings titled “Distant Memories,” won an award at the San Diego County Fair and was the recipient of the H.K. Holbein Award at the 39th Annual Exhibition of Watercolor West at the Riverside Art Museum. By 2007, his disability was to the point that painting became very difficult so he once again found himself at loose ends. But with the advances in voice recognition technology, he went full steam ahead capitalizing on his love of writing. And thus his blog (www.lifedisabled.com) and website (www.shirkstudios.com) were born. He also wrote a song and sang it in a YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=CRo5By9YvuA). And if that wasn’t enough, in 2014, he published a book that he hoped would serve as a source of companionship for others who are living with a rare disease or disability, “Rolling Back: Through a Life of Disabled.” As stated by one of SDWS’s past presidents, Carol Thomason, “Occasionally on this earthly plain, we encounter someone we know immediately as exceptional. That is Mike Shirk for me. He was my mentor, my encouragement and my good laugh with his great sense of humor.”

can Staffordshire Terrier, is looking for a new best friend. This sweet older boy was found by a Field Services Officer on March 4 in poor condition. His teeth were worn down to the nub, he had red patches of missing fur on his limbs and abdomen, and after further evaluation, his medical team discovered that his body was riddled with BB pellets. Regal loves to spend his days lounging in plush beds with those he loves. His ideal home will be with older, respectful children or adults only, and because he’s such a ladies man, if there are other dogs in the home he would like them to be female. Regal is available for adoption at the San Diego Humane Society’s Oceanside Campus located at 2905 San Luis Rey Road. To learn more about making him part of your family, please call (760) 757-4357.

No Yolking Around
W
hile standing in line at the supermarket, I couldn’t help but notice the shopper ahead of me gingerly placing 10 cartons of eggs on the check-out conveyor belt. The food snoop that I am, I asked him jokingly what he does with all those eggs? He said he buys several dozen because he makes egg white omelets and tosses the yolks for a low cholesterol protein meal. Yikes! That’s a waste of 120 golden nutrient powerhouses that can be incorporated into numerous luscious dishes from sauces and salads to pastas and desserts, along with spa-inspired treatments for the skin and hair. Here’s a primer on the egg yolk to help you get the most out of this wrongly maligned precious food. Go for the Gold: A decade ago, egg yolks were shunned as a source of cholesterol, which would increase plaque in the cardiovascular system, and possibly lead to heart attacks. That mentality gave rise to the popularity of egg white omelets, and the discarding of egg yolks. While moderation is still the guiding dietary principle, (one egg a day recommended for those with elevated cholesterol or heart disease), the yolk has been redeemed in nutritional circles, no longer considered a threat to blood cholesterol levels (particularly compared to trans fatty monsters), and, in fact, hailed as nature’s superfood. Yolks contain a mother lode of nutrients, one of the few foods with a natural store of Vitamin D for bone health, Vitamin K2 (which actually wards off arterial plaque build-up), the richest supply found in deep yellow or orange yolks, choline to keep fatty liver disease and age-related cognitive decline at bay, and biotin to boost hair, skin and nail health. There’s more. Those golden orbs are packed with protein and vitamin A for eye health, B’s for nerve function, antioxidant E, along with blood boosting iron, zinc, copper, magnesium, body-balancing potassium, selenium, calcium, folate for fetal development, and essential fatty acids (Omega-3s and 6s) to ratchet up immune responses, ease creaky joints with their anti-inflammatory properties, and, in fact — help break down cholesterol. Egg on Your Face: A rich store of vitamin A to soothe and heal skin and keep acne at bay, egg yolks are a naturally exhilarating skin mask. Also rife with proteins and fats, the yolk makes a nourishing treatment for stressed and over processed hair for a shiny, healthy mane. Don’t Put all Your Egg Yolks in One Basket: Here are some classic and creative uses for egg yolks that also add a glorious lemony color to these delightful dishes: • Concoct a creamy mayonnaise, silky hollandaise, rich Alfredo sauce, aioli (French garlic oil emulsion), or Caesar dressing to dial up sandwiches, burgers, paninis, fruit and green salads, eggs Benedict, grilled wild caught salmon, roasted potatoes, pastas, or steamed vegetables for breakfasts, lunches,

dinners and snacks. • Make delicate ribbon-like egg noodles such as pappardelle or rustic pasta like makaruni. Add to soups or drizzle with olive oil, garlic and wild mushrooms or heirloom tomatoes and fresh basil. • Whip up eggnog, smoothies and shakes for a creamy, rich texture and protein boost. (If you are leery about raw eggs, use pasteurized or coddled ones). • For just desserts, bake golden pound or sponge cakes, rich butter cream frostings, pie and strudel doughs, snickerdoodle and shortbread cookies, or concoct ice creams, silky mousses, egg custards, crème brulées or Spanish crema catalana, rice and tapioca puddings, along with lemon or orange curds with fresh mixed berries (see recipe). • Finally, the mighty yolks act as a binding agent (for chopped meats, dumplings and assorted pancakes).
Lemon Curd with Fresh Blueberries ■ Ingredients: • 5 large egg yolks • 3/4 cup white cane sugar • Juice and zest from 3 large lemons • 1 stick of sweet cream butter (cut into 4 portions) • 1 pint of fresh blueberries • Fresh mint leaves ■ Method: Heat a saucepan of water on medium, until it simmers. In a glass or metal bowl, whisk together eggs, sugar, juice and zest until it forms a smooth texture. Place bowl over the saucepan without touching the water, and continue to whisk for 10-12 minutes until the mixture is firm. Remove from heat and blend in butter, a chunk at a time until melted. If you prefer a super silky texture, strain the curd through a fine sieve to remove the zest. Chill for several hours. Blend in berries and scoop into Champagne flutes. Garnish with mint leaves and whipped cream. — kitchenshrink@san.rr.com

Say the secret word
O
n his 1950s game show “You Bet Your Life,” Groucho Marx used to reward contestants who guessed the secret word of the day. And though the times have changed somewhat, contestants in today’s business world are also rewarded when they determine their secret word. Consider the Magic Castle in Los Angeles, where the secret word is exclusivity. Behind these walls, patrons are entertained by the finest magicians in the world. Seriously, this isn’t Harry Potter. In the Hollywood Hills sits the equivalent of Broadway for the Merlin set. There you’ll find virtuoso magicians perfecting their craft and their patter and experience prestidigitation sure to confound even the most careful observer. It’s an experience unlike any other. Entry into this private club is by invitation only. Jacket and tie are required and the atmosphere is decidedly upscale. We visited the club Friday night and left there sated by fine food and intelligent conversation. We remain totally confounded about how that lemon got into that empty cup not 12 inches from my nose. Joining the club costs $5,000 and involves jumping through hoops. Despite that, they have a waiting list a mile long. Get that? Their reputation for
rarified air combines with high prices…and more people want to buy their offerings. Then think about Rolls Royce: Handmade, limited quantities, negligible recalls and VERY desirable. Are you seeing a pattern? Now examine your business. Regardless of what you sell, you can benefit from an image of exclusivity. After all, if customers see your offerings as a commodity, you’ll find yourself in a race to the bottom. Price alone will determine whether you make the sale, since people can probably buy what you sell for less down the street. And don’t kid yourself; many customers WILL go down the street to save $2. Or they’ll come to your store with questions before making their purchases online. Sometimes they’ll shop online while in your store. However, if the public recognizes they can’t get your offerings anyplace else, several things happen: · You eliminate competition · You become more desirable · You can raise prices Face it: if you’ve got the only lemonade stand in town on a hot day you’re going to get lots of business, even if you charge extra. Making your business’ secret word “lucrative.” With that said, I wish you a week of profitable marketing. Find the answer to your success at www.askmrmarketing.com.

Street was born and raised in White Bear Lake, Minnesota where he lived with his family, until he joined the Marine Corps in 1999. His sales career began right out of high school at a regional tire and service company. He was quickly promoted to assistant manager and was on the fast track to manager when he decided he wanted to serve at a greater level. In the Marines deployed to Afghanistan
Ryan Street in 2001-2002 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraq in 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Street’s interest in real estate began as a first-time home buyer where he had an awful experience with a less-than-reputable agent. Street knew his passion for discipline, integrity and service above self would be a great fit with his significant existing network in the real estate world. In his first year of his real estate career, Ryan sold 28 homes in North San Diego and southern Riverside couonties. Street lives in North Escondido with his wife Bethany and their three daughters.

Modern Home Systems offers easy programming plans BY DAVID L. CODDON So you think monitoring the security of your home from afar or having your favorite music play throughout the house is beyond your means? Not necessarily, says Danielle Twilegar, marketing manager for Modern Home Systems (formerly La Jolla Home Theater & Automation). “This is no longer a niche market,” according to Twilegar. “It’s starting to apply more to mass market and not just the top 5 percent of San Diego in terms of income.” Modern Home Systems, now owned by Otto Benson, who acquired the company in 2013, is family-owned and operated with 11 employees on staff. None of the work performed in clients’ homes or businesses, whether locally or out of town, is done by subcontractors. The company’s specialties include home automation systems, whole-house music systems, home-theater rooms, operation networking and wiring. “Our biggest specialty is home automation,” said Twilegar. “That entails allowing the homeowner to control everything, from lighting to audio-video. You name it, we can program it. You can control everything from an iPhone or an iPad.” This means convenience for the client.
Modern Home Systems has built home-automation systems from coast-to-coast — including Hawaii. “There are a lot of Smart devices out there,” said Twilegar, “but nothing like our product, where it’s integrated all into one app. You don’t have to toggle between multiple apps to have the fluidity to control things.” Modern Home Systems is an Apple authorized reseller and its employees include Apple technicians. Its chief home automation platform is Savant, which is

Apple based. “We wanted to become Apple specialists so that we can understand the system inside and out, and handle the whole system from a service standpoint,” Twilegar said. “We know people who tend to gear toward Apple seem to be Apple (users) across the board in terms of their devices.” Modern Home Systems, then, gives them
all-in-one control. After home automation systems, home audio is the company’s most popular specialty system. “Who doesn’t love music?” Twilegar asked rhetorically. “With the products that are available we can accommodate both mass-market and real high-end audiophiles.” These clients are not confined to the San Diego area, either. Besides its customers in Los Angeles and San Francisco, Modern Home Systems has undertaken projects in Boston, New York, Florida, and even Hawaii. Closer to home, when La Jolla Home Theater & Automation acquired Modern Home Systems three years ago, its entire client database went with it. Plus, “the transition with the new clients was pretty seamless,” Twilegar recalled. Being a home automation system client usually doesn’t stop with the initial installation project, either. “They (Modern Home Systems’ clients) seem to be lifelong customers once we get them because technology is ever evolving. When new products come out and they want us to install them as well, we have to program the new devices into their homes.” ■ Modern Home Systems is at 7007 Carroll Road, San Diego.
