BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Learn more about being prepared for a community emergency during a free event this Saturday in Rancho Bernardo. San Diego Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster, along with RB United, is hosting a 9/11 Project from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9 at Windermere Homes & Estates, 16783 Bernardo Center Drive in Rancho Bernardo. It will include a complimentary lunch donated by Souplantation and opportunity for people to sign-up if they would like to get more involved. Rancho Bernardo resident Terry Norwood, who was recently hired as San Diego VOAD’s resiliency corps fellow, will be there to answer attendees’ questions about preparing their families for emergency situations, such as wildfire or earthquake. She said City Councilman Mark Kersey will also speak at 12:30 p.m. and thank those volunteering with emergency preparation efforts. Attendees will also be given 10 personal preparedness brochures to distribute to their neighbors, Norwood said. SD VOAD — part of the Southern California and national VOAD groups — is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, membership-based organization that builds resiliency in communities nationwide. Norwood said the San Diego group serves as an umbrella organization for various nonprofits and interfaith agencies throughout the region to support their recovery assistance efforts if a disaster hits the county. BY STEVE DREYER A parade and community fair on Saturday will kick off three weekends of Poway Days activities. The 53rd annual Poway Days Parade will start at 9 a.m. Saturday on the south side of Poway Road. An estimated 100-plus entries are expected. Marching bands from Rancho Bernardo and Del Norte high schools will participate, as will those
from Poway, Westview and Mt. Carmel high schools. There will be dozens of school, veterans and civic groups; pageant winners; classic cars and equestrian units. The parade will begin at Pomerado Road and head east to its conclusion on Bowron Road. This year’s theme is “Happiness is Helping Others.” The grand marshal is Phil Harris, founder of Friends &
