Dear ladies, Congratulations on getting your first Women’s Planner! I created this planner after fruitless search through shops back in January 2009 for a perfect planner that will be able to follow my busy and hectic single, working mum schedule and remind me on the very important things for women’s health and life quality which I would otherwise forget. In the first year it was published the Women’s Planner sold in record time and we realized that we had a product that was very much needed and appreciated among women. Every year we run a big survey among our shoppers and use their comments to improve next year’s edition. Thank you for choosing the Women’s Planner this year! By carrying out regular breast self-examination (BSE) you take active part in preserving and improving your health. BSE should be a lifelong habit. Examine each breast once a month. The best time for BSE is seven days after the first day of a period, when the breasts are softest and not sensitive. If your periods have stopped, set aside one day a month, always the same day, when you carry out BSE.

STEP 1

To begin with stand in the light in front of a mirror and observe your breasts with arms relaxed. Pay attention to any visible changes, such as changes in the nipples, the size and shape of the breasts. Be particularly cautious if the change occurs in just one breast, because healthy changes on the whole take place symmetrically.

BREAST SELF-EXAMINATION

STEP 4

After your breast examination, move on to the armpit area. Here you will be able to feel the lymph glands, which are normal and natural. Pay attention to any lumps that do not cause discomfort when pressed. When pressed lymph glands create some discomfort and perhaps even pain. If you feel an unusual lump, which you estimate to be more than a centimetre in size, you should visit a physician. In most cases these changes are harmless, but safety is the best policy. Naturally, repeat the examination with the other breast.

STEP 5

After you have examined yourself standing up, lie down on your back. Place one arm behind your head and use the other one to check the opposite breast in the same manner. When you are in a horizontal position the breast becomes wider and flatter, facilitating an easier examination of certain structures. Perform the same examination with the other breast.

STEP 2

Stay in this position, but raise both arms simultaneously in the air. Repeat the movement several times running and pay attention to your nipples. Do they retract evenly? Remember to look for lumps formed on the lower part of the breasts.

STEP 3

Next, raise one arm and place it behind your head, and with the tips of the index finger, middle finger and ring finger of the other hand feel the breast. Important here is to place the tips of at least two, better three, fingers together, so as to increase the area you are feeling. It will help if you mentally divide the breast by two lines, horizontal and vertical, and gradually feel each of the four parts. The more often you examine your breasts, the better you will know their structure and the easier you will recognise any natural, or unnatural, changes.

Pay attention to any breast discharge. It could be the sign of a serious illness. Spontaneous milky discharge from both breasts is a sign of hormonal disturbances. Every few months, check your breasts for any secretion. Gently squeeze the whole breast several times, and if you notice a discharge, consult a physician.
