Special Issue Contents EDITOR’S NOTE It might be somewhat unusual to have the second issue of the year be a special edition, but I believe these are special circumstances. Our staff has such a unique opportunity to cover culture right now, as the 2010s will have ended by the distribution of this issue. So much has happened in the past ten years, a time period spanning over half of most high schoolers’s lives. Covering the weirdest, funniest and most tragic and memorable events throughout ten years — in pop culture, technology, world events and even our school — is a huge task, but we approached this issue as a way to provide something fun and nostalgic for our community to read. It’s meant to be a mostly fun, but also accurate record of the past, highlighting the serious moments as well. The design and photography are special and use playful, bold colors to emphasize the undaunted, youthful generation on the rise in an age characterized by memes and social movements. Our staff curated a list for each topic, combining research, critics’s reviews and students’s opinions. As you flip through this issue, we hope you enjoy reliving the top moments of the past ten years.

Today’s technology has changed dramatically from the first models created in the early 2010s. Phones from the start of the decade had the first Facetime and digital keyboard texting; this was also the time whennon-touch screen devices were out and touch screen was in. With the rising dominance of digital platforms and devices, nearly all aspects of daily life have been transformed dramatically. The innovations of this decade continue to make life more convenient and suggest a similar trend for the next decade.

Digital Streaming Became the Norm

The first TV show/movie media service provider — Netflix — started in 1997, but since then other media service providers have been rising, such as Disney Plus, Amazon Video, Vudu and Hulu. These give the option to stream shows/movies through monthly subscriptions in the comfort of homes and even on the go. Some of these providers battle over which movies or shows go on each outlet.

“Disney Plus has all my favorite childhood movies. I think it’s [a] perfect form of education. The younger kids of this generation should know about movies and Disney shows before their time.” Raquel Gutierrez (10)

Enhanced the Way We Listen to Music 6 Airpods AirPods deliver effortless, all-day audio on the go, and AirPods Pro bring Active Noise Cancellation to an in-ear headphone, with a customizable fit. Airpods replaced wire headphones by letting the users connect to them through Bluetooth.

“I honestly like them because of the convenience, not having the wires is an actual blessing. When you’re going to the gym, the wires don’t get caught on you or fall out it’s great.” Franklin Frohock (11)

Lyft was founded June 2012. It was developed as a taxi service but on a mobile app that offers car rides to any location, food delivery and bike rentals. Users can contact their drivers through the app as well.

The esports Boom In the last ten years, the industry of pro-gaming has exploded, becoming a multi billion dollar field. Egames encompass any sport competition in video games, ranging from real-time strategy, athletics and fighting games. Players can compete as individuals or on teams. It has existed since 1972, but developers invested more heavily in the 2010s.

Pinterest Transformed the World of Design

Pinterest first launched in January 2010. This app gives users millions of images that can be used for things like room decor inspirations, ideas to put together outfits, arts and crafts and even memes. Anything users look up will take them to people who have already had ideas on that subject. The app allows people to pick their favorite posts and pin them into specific categories of their choosing. While users can look at others’s ideas, they can also create an account and post their own content. This platform has helped make art and design a more collaborative and widereaching space.

Made Photo Editing Accessible 8 VSCO VSCO initially launched in 2011. The platform/ community allows users to capture photos in the app and edit them, using preset filters and editing tools provided by the app. The users can then post them on their VSCO account for their friends and family to view.

Esports have gained an immense following, with the rise of streaming platforms like Twitch, Mixer and YouTube Gaming. In 2015 ESPN launched extensive coverage of esports, which have become as heavily covered as traditional sports. These developments have lead to 323 million viewers of esports in the year of 2016; this viewership has grown even more in the past few years. In 2017 winners brought a whopping total of $5.2 billion in revenue. With the global games industry projected to be worth a quarter of a trillion dollars by 2023, it’s one of the fastest growing industries in the world. Expected to see a 50% increase over the next three years, esports hold huge potential to become one of the most lucrative industries as the 2020s start. It’s redefining the cultural role of video games and connecting players all over the globe.

Q&A

Mrs. Kathryn Clark, English

From both Print 7 Renowned and the Big Screen Winning over twenty prestigious awards, ‘The Hunger Games’ has become a highly recognizable series from the decade. Following the book series by author Suzanne Collins, the series of films have inspired a wide range of other dystopian films and TV shows.

“I think ‘The Hunger Games’ was so successful because people could possibly see this happening in the world so it comes with that attachment.” Jackson Lopez (11)

Series Finale to End a Greatest Showman’ 8 The Universe 5 ‘The Had Big Top Success Stars such as Zac Efron, Zendaya and Hugh Jackman starred in ‘The Greatest Showman,’ a film retelling the creation of the Barnum and Bailey circus. The film’s soundtrack and choreography have shown to be some of the most renowned aspects.

“‘The Greatest Showman’ is a great movie. All of choreography is great and the actors and actresses did an excellent job in it. It’s an amazing movie to watch.” Seneca Howell (10)

As the final installment of the popular Avengers series, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ quickly rose to the top of the charts after its 2019 release. Endgame successfully brought an end to a universe that has impacted many generations of views. Apart from the film’s other numerous awards, actors Robert Downey Jr. and Josh Brolin recieved awards for their roles as Iron Man and Thanos, respectively. The film has earned Marvel Studios a sizeable amount of money following its release. The film quickly became one of the highest grossing films of all time, earning $2.8 billion at the box office.

“I started the film class about nine years ago because there was a big push for electives based on our subject areas. To make it happen, I had to officially propose it to my department head and the principals and get everyone to sign off on it. Then, I had to write a justification and the school board had to say yes or no.”

What kind of material does the class cover throughout the semester? “Film Literature is a class where I knew a lot about film coming in, but not enough, so I had to educate myself. We read books that go along with some of the films we watch, which broadens how the class views the content. I really try to pick content that no other English teacher would assign or that you normally wouldn’t get in school.”

How has the class progressed since you first started it? “[Some films weren’t] successful, which is okay because I want to give students content that they will remember and like to watch or read. A lot of the class is the same, as it’s always been because it’s been pretty successful. I’m really glad that students have a chance to take a fun elective relating to English.”

Songs containing multiple languages became more mainstream, and differences between countries and cultures began to dissolve. The globalization of music such as K-Pop and multilingual hits has brought a mix of completely different sounds to America, and has made a huge impact on the way we listen to music today.

“Ever since that day I am now more aware of everything with the public. I am aware that some bags could be unchecked, not just at a running event, but also at airports and other things like that. It’s horrible that because of this event I have to be aware of these things.” Mr. Kendal Smith, Science

FASHION

Rainbow Loom, Chokers, Heelys, Scrunchies, Slap Bracelets, Justice Clothes

How Justice Lost their Touch on Teens Justice clothes became popular in 2012, taking over the wardrobes of tens of thousands of young girls’ closets. The store is still popular among many kids across the U.S., though some would describe it as ‘overhyped.’ They are most popular for their clothes; however, their accessories and toys are very intriguing to adolescents.

Fad that Never Faded

“I think Hollister is popular because it’s affordable and looks nice. Every store has it so it’s easy to buy. I wear Hollister 3-4 times a week because it is so comfortable.I started wearing it last May because my brother influenced me.” Jackson Henessy (10)

A Colorful Touch

“My favorite aspect of the Rainbow Loom bracelets is making them. I know a variety of styles such as single loop and fishtail, but the starburst is my favorite. I make friendship bracelets and my boyfriend and I have one together. Rainbow Loom bracelets look good with just about any outfit.” Akasha Gonzalez (10)

How Heelys Rolled Out of Popularity

2014

Invented by sticking a skateboard wheel in a Nike running shoe, Heelys were involved in many students’ childhoods. Heelys were a hybrid of shoe and roller skate. Many students were suspended and banned from wearing Heelys in school in 2013.

Slapped Out of Style

“All of the cool kids had them, so I obviously wanted one. I had this one tie dye bracelet that I had for a few years. I was really proud of it. I have no idea if they will come back because fashion is so different now compared to elementary school.” Carson Jabaay (10)

“I think Heelys were popular then because it was an alternative to skateboards, so it was more accessible for kids and easier to bring everywhere. I don’t think Heelys will make a comeback because there’s not enough of a nostalgia factor for most people and everybody who does remember Heelys are too old to be skating around on them.” Ethan Foster (10)

Where We’ve Been & Where We’re Going Throughout the past decade, trends in fashion have varied in style. Some trends are original, while others have come back into fashion. These fads evoke a nostalgic feeling among teenagers because this decade contained their childhood. Trends may dissapear through the years but the memories associated with them stay. Accessories dominated this decade, and they don’t seem to be going anywhere in the future.

“When I first found out I needed glasses I hated the idea of them. But, I decided to use them as part of a fashion statement not just a visual burden. My glasses contribute to my hippie vibe, they finish up my aesthetic and make me stand out.” Lorena Fonseca (12)

How Chokers Lost Their Grip

“I owned a choker when I was younger, [in] about 5th grade. One of them was rainbow and the other was plain black. The black one had a small BFF matching version that I shared with my American Girl doll. I got rid of it after a while because it was not in style anymore.” Veronica Ruiz-Avila (11)

One Scrunchie, Three Uses

Confident Colors

“I got bored of my hair but I needed it bleached first. I honestly got inspiration from Hannah Montana. She was super confident in what she did and how she looked and I wanted to be as confident with the way I wanted to look. Dyeing my hair made me feel bold and different.” Izabella Ramirez (10)

“I wear scrunchies for their intended use and for fashion. My boyfriend and other boys in general wear scrunchies on their wrists to symbolize that they are with a certain girl. It is similar to a girl wearing their boyfriend’s sweatshirt. I like it because there aren’t many things that guys can wear that are their girlfriend’s. I think it’s cute.” Cameron Freitag (11)

The App that Started it All

“I was definetley a VSCO girl over the summer. I had a trampoline sleepover with my friends and I wore a shell necklace, oversized t-shirts, Birkenstock’s and scrunchies. My spray tan helped the look come together. I also had my hydro flask with me all the time.” Rhyan Noldin (10) Fashion / 15

“I think it’s obviously unsafe for people involved, it affects our learning environment and our safety and how I communicate with people. When I hear it’s a student it scares me, it makes me question who I hang out with and how I treat people. You never know what can happen or what someone is going through.” Danya Abdelsalam (11)

The #Me too movement caught attention when Tarana Burke spoke out about sexual abuse and quickly inspired many Hollywood actresses to speak out as well. The phrase “Me too” encourages those impacted by sexual abuse and assault to share their stories.

Mitt Romney (R)

The 2012 presidential election took place on Nov. 6 between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. Their campaigns focused mainly on employment and The Great Recession (2007-2009). Obama then defeated Romney with the popular vote and the electoral college which gave him a second term and continued his legacy. I think Obama got back in because he led the mission that killed Osama Bin Laden. That helped him in the races.” Andrew Risser (12)

2016 Election Meet the Candidates

“I thought the Me Too Movement was a big deal because it really just showed a change in the culture of today’s society. It showed how the culture is changing in Hollywood.”

Where WhereWe’ve We’veBeen Been & Where We’re Going The school has been moving onto bigger and better things with large renovations to fit the high school students graduating from the local middle schools. The new renovations let the tri-town area students come together as one school. Since the changes students have been able to get closer and build bonds with students outside of their town. With more students being able to fit in the school new opportunities are brought to the table for the years ahead.

3

Maintaining a Safe Learning Environment

The need for safety improvements has greatly increased. To protect students from school shootings, drugs and many other things. They have attempted to increase the safety at the school many times whether it was enforcing every student to wear lanyards or to have students attend various seminars describing the different types of abuse and who to talk to if they or their loved ones have suffered from any forms of abuse. They also have police officers that stay in the school during school hours to keep watch.

4

Breaking the Lanyard Requirement

6

National Vaping Epidemic Reached the School

Although vaping was first introduced in 1963 as a way to stop smoking, it has recently become popular with teenagers. There have been seminars about the dangers of drugs to remind the students that not only is it illegal but that it’s not good for your health.

Mentoring Class Strengthens Peers’s Bonds 7 Peer A peer mentoring class was added into the selection of electives students can take. Peer mentoring is where students help the West Lake program students with their daily tasks. The students form bonds with one another teaching how important working together is as well as how important inculsion for all is. This program has shown the school the importance of being kind and helping others.

“I’ve been doing this for about threefour years. It’s helped me learn to communicate in different ways by using sign language or by using facial expressions. I guess it teaches me, as a person, that even though a lot of people are different, it doesn’t mean that they can’t be included in ‘normal things.’” Elizabeth Haberling (12)
